"I don't know what kind of music you're into, but you're about to be into this." is exactly how I describe GGST music to people about to hear it for the first time.
Just pause the video to write that bar for bar
"Do you want to set this up for me at all or do you want me to just jump in blind?"
"No, because I don't really know how to set it up for you"
HC's theme is ear torture though
I like progressive music but that was a bit too much for me. :D
Nah man Drift is a banger
I love that Childern of the Omnissiah is a recurrent piece in this series of yours!
It's so unique.
It shows that masterpieces canbe found even in smaller titles.
Even in death i serve the omnissiah
All must hear of the mysteries of the Omnissiah! Blessed be the day when the Omnissiah enters the wider human noosphere!
Frances is a delight. Please bring her back for more in the future. Her takes have been very refreshing and open.
She really studies, ponders on and enjoys the listening experience. It’s a pleasure to hear her thoughts on it all :)
Drift is such a ride.
One of my favorite videos on youtube is a "listening to my unorganized __ playlist" meme but every different song is just a different part of Drift, and it's *so* on point
love Marco getting asked "do you want to set this up for me at all?" and the response of "I don't even know how I would"
22:30 "I dunno what kind of music you're into, but you're about to be into this" I have no idea why this made me bust out laughing so hard 🤣The sheer confidence in that statement and power it exudes are so tangible. Good thing Drift totally backed it up. Another great guest video I genuinely can't get enough of these, and Frances is absolutely delightful. Would love to see her on the channel again!!
Oneirophobia is a great song in its own right, but experiencing the music shift during the DPS phase was another experience entirely.
I was a little sad the big choir part didn't come coz that would have surely blown her mind away. But tbf Bungie should include that in the official track
With regards to the conversation at 8:00 or so about 'lining up' the audio, oddly enough, one of the positive things about being in control of your character is that you subconsciously line your attacks up with the music, so sometimes everything matches the beat because you _made_ it match the beat, but you don't even realise you are doing it, that's what rhythm does to people.
The biggest thing I respect about Daisuke Ishiwatari (Guilty Gear) is that he isn't afraid to stick to one genre for a song or break boundaries and create whatever the hell he wants, and it just works. Dude pumps out bangers.
"powerful nonchalance" is probably the best description of Happy Chaos ive heard
One of the coolest moments of general sound design in the same kind of “badass moment” as Daredevil is during the Ice Worm fight in Armored Core 6. When you lower its shields, theres an ally who is charging a large railgun to incapacitate the worm. Once its fully charged all of the sound cuts out and he delivers a badass one liner over the radio before it hits the worm in a crescendo of sound. One of the best moments Ive felt playing recently
Damn that’s cool
"I won't miss."
"Watch out for friendly fire!"
“All or nothing…”
AC6 has some incredible sound design. The OST is cool, but it's more of an ambiance than anything else. Very much harkens to 80s dark sci-fi/cyberpunk. The mech and techno sound effects throughout the game are just so satisfying and cool-sounding. I love when sounds like those are used as a tool to draw you further into the world and the lore. AC6 does that beautifully, it creates an entire vibe that when combined with the dreary yet grandiose sci-fi visuals, just sweeps you away.
Man these guest videos are great; hearing you discuss the merits of the intricacies of the music always makes feel so motivated to go make something myself. Thanks Marco!
Aw!!!!!
The thing she said about about timing is so true. I started paying attention to the boss themes in elden ring after watching a couple of these videos, and the way they loop the score to accommodate to drawn-out fights, ease in and out of sections depending on the gameplay elements (2nd phase, death screen, 'victory acheived/enemy felled screen) is just so awesome, and I had never noticed it before. Even when looking for it I can barely notice transitions and stuff
ah yes Happy Chaos and Drift, very apt that Marco couldn't even preface what they were about to listen to LOL
Drift is definitely something that grows on you the more you listen to it
Agreed. I really hated it at first, but now I'm jammin.
thats the entire ggst ost, drift and circle have to be the best examples of that though
First listen: On what kind of acids where the band on to make this?
Third listen: *DO YOU HEAR IT, THE PULSES OF THE LIVING?!*
Another fantastic introduction to VG music! Also, I recently got to experience a live performance of "The Duviri Paradox" operatic suite at TennoCon 2023. It was a truly memorable experience.
Oh man that’s SO cool
Nier felt like the most enchanting music from how many would just be quiet and let themselves drowned into the flow of what the music has to tell.
Amazing.
I'm a bit surprised he chose gestalt over 1.22 for shadowlord since 1.22 has clearer orchestration, instrumentation, is overall more complex and also has more impressive choir work.
Its always interesting when some ya see someone new introduced to video games aspects. It reali is a refresh reminder of the things we tend to take for granted, and what connections we automatically make when we know a franchise to when we dont.
It's always baffling when people have never played a video game. I understand of course it's just.. unbelievable
Marco, this series has been great, but this was hands down the best one so far.
Aw good im glad you liked it!!!
Having Nier will do that
@@mr.stuffdoer8483 while the nier soundtrack is incredible and Shadowlord is probably my favourite of its tracks, it was more about the guest's approach to the music and how she read into the story telling of each track. I would love to see another video with her as the guest again.
The moment I saw NieR being mentioned I knew this video would be good.
One of the things I really liked about your approach to this one was how you followed her commentary up with a piece that related to what she said. She talked about organs after the Warhammer song and about its association with deities and churches, so you pivoted to show her a nuanced piece that shows just how nuanced the organ can get in its usage. That's peak meatball right there!
Happy Chaos (and Drift) are actually pretty easy to explain - "when the violent storm is over the blue sky is more beautiful" and that's basically his whole character. He creates conflict because he likes the contrast between suffering and joy, and just in general likes a good story and hates a status quo. In Strive he helps the main antagonist become a threat to all of reality then turns around and honestly tells the protagonists he hopes they win.
He's a decadent nihilist wizard that just wants a really good season of TV to watch, whatever the cost
Drift is always one of the more surprising parts of Guilty Gear Strive, but now honestly I want to know what some opera people's opinions on The Gravity will be.
Granblue Fantasy Versus is a fighting game, yeah, but is specifically a spin-off! I do recommend the main game's tracks a lot too.
Putting that aside, I don't really comment but have been a great fan of this whole series of yours and look forward to more!
that dive for the daredevil drop was S E X Y
This series of bringing people from your past as a singer is so unique and amazing. I don't recall other channel doing something similar.
I would actually love if you could bring some of them back but together and see what they think of songs they've heard previously in your channel.
Always a super interesting video Marco!
I love Ascension from FF16 man, its so good. The English lyrics remind me of OST's composed by Shiro Sagisu.
One Hundred Percent, this has been my favorite series to watch. I absolutely live for the musical breakdowns and the different perspectives coming from all of these wonderful artist!
I see NieR
I press Like
I'm a simple man
I can relate
So much Nier to come
Me fr
@@MarcoMeatballPlease! Always looking for NieR specifically. Can you recommend anything similar stylistically?
that point she makes with the music having to follow the player is exactly what octopath traveler pre boss fight themes do. A short looping music track with a lot of tension and at any point, by player discretion, it'll seemlessly transition to the boss theme. Very satisfying and very hype
I see nier, I see FFX16.
This is gonna be fun!
There's a wonderful essay on YT called "How Octopath Traveler Hypes its Boss Battles". Talks about the technology developments to enable the operatic moments driven by the player which is exactly what Frances mentioned as her interest early in the video.
Oneirophobia has a different version you only hear in raid and that's my favorite version of it. When you enter the damage phase the woman comes in and it's so good
Amazing as always. Love seeing others Reactions. All the Destiny 1&2 raid music hits a special place in my heart, and it's always a joy to see other react to how truly talented that music team is.
Loved Frances takes here, definitely one of my favorite guests so far! On the subject of Dynamic Music for stuff like battle themes in games, I think it would be really interesting to see one of your guests get to see how the tracks in DMC5 change when the style meter progresses from D where its basically background music, all the way to SSS and the vocals kick in and the volume is turned up to 11.
Children of the Omission is an amazing piece! May I recommend checking out "Rejects Unite" which is another Darktide soundtrack that dropped in one of their updates earlier this year that wasn't part of the initial OST release.
God i love rift and each someone react to it it's just "what is going on?"
that discussion about lohengrin (percival's theme music from gbvs) is very interesting and quite fitting for his early introduction
Marco must have a hard time figuring out how to do these videos because we love every one of the guests and are constantly like "Bring them back for more!"
i fcking LOVED IT!!! I NEED MORE ... oneirophobia .... Ascension and Shadow lord made me so hype up to see you react to it...
Aw!
shadowlord brings me to tears every single time i'm listening to it
such a good track, full of so much sadness and melancholy
every time guilty gear is here i get so excited
I would love... Love, love, love for Frances to hear the new FF coming out, it does exactly that with it's music, where the music dynamically changes and flows seamless to and from battle, it's an absolutely wild thing to hear.
I'm a simple person. I see Drift for GGST and I press the like.
i was NOT expecting lohengrin here! ive liked the gbvs ost a lot, glad you included it!
The idea of games seen as modern operas SO makes me wish Marco would take a look at the way music plays in ultimate raids in FFXIV or in fights like refulgence savage where the music starts along with a phase, allowing the combat design and the musical composition some interplay. I haven't done ultimates so I can't quite speak to how it feels in them, but refulgence in particular has amazing pacing to the music, parts of the song sound so triumphant, but you only get to hear them if you survive some of the nastier mechanics, that sort of thing. It's great to see and hear it all in motion.
“There is no truth in flesh, only betrayal. There is no strength in flesh, only weakness. There is no constancy in flesh, only decay. There is no certainty in flesh but death.” - Credo Omnissiah.
I think it'd be cool if you showed them songs in their specialties, like I think it was Kathy who was a pianist in her resume, so show her Gwyns theme and the thunder version of Funeral of Flowers. Of course keep up the variety of songs tho I just think it'd be neat in case you got any specialists on
On the subject of music reacting to sword strikes, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker immediately comes to mind. As for music evolving depending on progression, the Mount Wario theme from Mario Kart 8 is a very good example
There is just something that children of the omnissiah makes you feel when working on real heavy machinery while listening to it, it almost feels like the machine becomes alive and breathes, its almost like falling into a trance
21:09 I'm honestly amazed that you both bring up Vivaldi's "Winter" here and don't segway into watching the HSR Kafka trailer. xD
Filmed way before 🤣
Based
Nezarec and Safi? You really pulled out some bangers for this video
Drift is a such a banger pick
I absolutely love hearing a Steve Reich name drop! I respect his music a lot and have spent much time listening to his work (and artists in the vein of Philip Glass and John Adams). Obviously, you will reference the big European classical composers and especially those musical influences from the operatic tradition, but I appreciate drawing ties to the neo-classical and more modern-contemporary music traditions found in the last 100 years or so, cause (I feel) game OST’s make more sense in the modern context. Maybe that’s oversimplified or obvious, maybe it’s the mojito talking haha, but I appreciate hearing those newer composers break into the conversation. Always love these videos with your guests!
As someone who was huge into destiny and played pvp, pve and also did some raids ive experienced a lot of the music and i have to say that it is some of the most beautiful and immersive music ive ever heard in games. I can easily get lost in and really feel like i am actually in and a part of that video game world. More than anything else ive played.
Love this series ❤
It feels GREAT when your attacks line up to the movement, they are not always 1:1 sometimes its just happenstance, Othertimes its usually tied to the bosses HP(When they cross a certain Level it triggers the next phase which also triggers a progression in the orechesta) and this feels great when it was Your big attack or combo that set it off.
with the discussion around 8:40, i have some input:
videogames these days often have somewhat reactive music, with transition pieces (eg. for a theme that loops to transition to a nighttime version), filters (weather effects, that also make subtle changes to the way the BGM works) and sometimes even the entire "song" is just a ton of little pieces that get strung together, adding and removing notes or instruments (the new Doom games do this for example, where the music reflects your actions, without being too ont eh nose about it being reactive.
BOTW's battle theme for example has a percussion sound that gets played in the theme (so not a diagetic sound) when you hit an enemy. but instead of it being the second you hit, its played at the next moment it can be to still match the music.
these systems are incredibly complex (to my business programmer brain) it is amazing when done well, because you enter a flow state where you doing well, makes the music react to you and cheers you on.
I don't think anybody said this yet (sifted through comments and didn't see any or maybe I'm blind) but in regards to the reactive music conversation in the Safi'jiva section, there is a part that you can hear at 4:39 when the music gets muffled a bit, and that is when the monster flies into the air and charges up a huge attack and drops a small fire droplet that explodes and covers the entire battlefield in the blue flames (happens at 4:19). It's not the hunter doing a cool attack to the music but the monster instead!
wow. shes amazing! Bring her back
Safi'jiiva gameplay => hammer bro.
Everything is well in the world.
ME SEEING DRIFT IN THE QUEUE LMAO LETS GO KING
i genuinely love those videos, i suppose they're not 2 hours long to respect the time of the people you bring on but i wish they were
They actually are 🤣 just not here on this channel
@@MarcoMeatball lmao imma check those vods 👀
Wao, didn't expect a Granblue song to appear :0
Might I humbly (and shamelessly) recommend one of my favorites, Dark Silver Wings, theme of Proto-Bahamut HL from Granblue Fantasy(the mobile game)? There's 2 versions tho, the original and the Stella Magna arrangement version. Would recommend both of them for a listen, the original is a little more orchestra-y though.
Would like to see them talk about the music from Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey!
Since this is the last video you released in this series, all I wanted to say is that I would like Scaramouche's live song (Polumnia Omnia) to appear in the next one. And if it's not in the next one, it doesn't matter, it can be in the next one of that same video.
Btw good video! ♥♥
As much as I love the Daredevil moment, I dont think it works that well without the rest of the song.
The entire song leading up to it is one big buildup of tension, as is the mission it plays in.
The situation keeps deteriorating, the tension keeps building, until suddenly those shields, and the song, drop as hope finally shows itself to end the fight.
Daredevils drop is amazing but its the whole song building up to it that completes it.
Oh wow this was 50 minutes? I actually couldn't tell. The music and commentary were peak
🥰
Hello, it’s very interesting to see your analyzes of video game music from the point of view of musicians and singers. I recommend listening to various musical themes from the game Allods Online, there are some extremely interesting melodies there. (Personally, I like Khadagan's March, Main Theme and Astral prelude).
Unfortunately, the game is quite old and there aren’t really any colorful videos for it, except maybe fan art, but the music itself, I think, is worth it.
I really hope you show some of these people some legend of Spyro music some time, it'd be nice if more people got to appreciate how brilliant most of it is.
the song 'rise up dead man' from hunt showdown, there's also a version with singing by the original the port sulphur band
or you should look into the half life 1 and 2 soundtracks
lastly the simcity 4 soundtrack has some extremely unique music that you will simply not hear anywhere else
Great vid! Would've loved to hear what she would have said about the variety in Arknights music haha
Got some bangers in this one.
PS: I'm reminded of just how melodramatic JP music is when you play a global mix like this.
Idk if I asked for it already but the annihilation theme from remnant 2 is an amazing piece and I would like to see your reaction to it
one thing that ive really noticed with video games and a lot of the very recent ties and I suppose references towards operatic/orchestral music is that, in an opera its reciting to you a story thats both auditory and visually. This is my hot take, Video games like ff16 are like my modern version of an opera. The world building and story arcs along side character development happening orally through context on screen and lore happening in the game I want to say Culminates all together into just the complete picture. Video games are just my media of an opera experience
I kind of want you to cover some of the music from Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner as I remember the music being excellent.
The BOOMING subbass in Children of Omnissiah is something I never truly experienced until I bought a proper subwoofer.
Where was the clip from the daredevil/arsernal bird moment from?
Every time someone on the other end of these videos talks about the action in game affecting the music, I want them so see a playthrough of Ape Out and get their reaction.
God, i can feel that daredevil moment.
Literally every Guilty Gear song: We might not make sense but dang we sound amazing.
oh i wasn't expecting a granblue fantasy song, the mobile game has many amazing songs .. hopefully you can react to those
I am curious about a reaction to Shara Ishvalda from Monster Hunter World. It's so diferent from normal, that I want to see if they can feel that disturbance and "interverence" that it does.
The Far Cry 5 OST is one that would be great to react to. Not come across anyone that has done any videos on them. Dan Romer did an amazing job on the OST
I hope you do more Granblue Fantasy Versus music. 😎😎😎
how do you pick music for your guests to listen to? are there special considerations you have to make regarding their background or do you approach it more with just like a favorites list?
A little bit of everything tbh
@@MarcoMeatball banger selections for all the people you invited man, i just felt like all the songs you gave them really gave them a lot of material to work with and a lot to say and its awesome whenever you do videos like this and see their perspectives go into it. the representation you do is some of the coolest things ive ever seen on the platform man forreal
i really appreciate that. as always.
@@tipsfedora3714
If you ever happen to continue this series, please add "This is what you are" to the list
36:00 I love how you can see that she's expecting the song to end there _so_ much, and then BAM 36:09
It's the same reaction I had
Omg 😂
“This is great jogging music” she says AS I STARTED JOGGING TO THIS MUSIC!!!
Love your videos Marco, gonna ask something stupid since you say you don't like that game but what do you think of the Myriad Celestia Trailer: The Jepella Rebellion Scene 47 (its a Kafka again) cheers
Lacrimosa! So cool!
29:00 They both do and don’t at the same time, as without context of the character, this is a chaotic torrent of lyrics that oddly enough becomes rather coherent once you know his character.
What about monster hunter frontier? Dont Touch Anything, or time trial theme from super mario galaxy? Shadow of War? I feel like a lot of other diverse music was missed out on and the next game music youre going to recommend are persona 5 or skullgirls.
"no because i dont really know how to set it up for you" YEP
"This is what Nezarec looks like, he's pretty terrifying." *shows picture of a rotisserie chicken*
I would like to say look into music from Nikke: Goddess of victory, and Huniepop 2 (especially Royal Suite) Sets romantic mood for the game
I'm curious what both you and the guests you bring onto your channel think of VGM that isn't necessarily meant to describe a character or story but set a tone. For instance, Blue Archive has a LOT of amazing music, but very little of it is character or story centric. Most of the songs are meant to convey the tone of the setting or moment, which I think is interesting and important in its own right. But I'd be interested to know what you think, Marco.
She is so cool.
you always make great suggestions but i keep waiting for dragon quest music to appear
Ideas for the next video:
“A Despair Filled Farewell” - Shadow of the Colossus
“Leaving Earth” - Mass Effect 3
“Apotheosis” - Journey
“Main Theme” - The Last of Us
“Hikari, Orchestral version” - Kingdom Hearts
“Soviet March” - Red Alert 3
“Battle with a True Hero” - Undertale
“One of a Kind” - Bayonetta
“Liberation of Gracemeria” - Ace Combat 6
Ah yes, Safijiva, the gentle simple sailor...
