I understand your points about the earlier material, but the new record is like they perfected the balance of their best elements with top notch production.
Song titles are insane I think I can match maybe 5 hot mully songs to their titles at gunpoint. The second the song starts, I know every word, but if you ask me the title, who knows? Sometimes, I even confuse a title with the completely wrong song.
Breakdown of the video: >Starts the video with: "We're done hating, we like liking things!" >Proceeds to cross arms, shake his head, and do nearly everything physically possible to indicate he isn't open to something "new" >Spends the first five minutes of the video countering every single thing she says with full-on negativity and dismissals >Repeatedly says H.M. needs to just decide to stick with/be post-hardcore and stay in that box >But listens to the first song and sarcastically says it might be better if he could understand half of what Tades is saying >Complains about having to learn the lyrics to get the full impact of a song (?????) >But is wearing an MCR shirt and talking about Fall Out Boy >Says the random weird guitar riffs (midwest emo type) take him out of the song >But complains that the guitar riffs in Green Squirrel are too repetitive and needed to be more interesting and varied >Says musicians should just stay in a safe box and being experimental/going outside that box is a bad thing >But immediately goes on to complain that Green Squirrel is too cookie cutter >Repeatedly dunks on the song names >But is wearing the shirt of a band with song names like "You know what they do to guys like us in prison" and "It's not a fashion statement, it's a deathwish", and praising Action/Adventure (who is indeed amazing) who has songs like "Frozone, true king in the north"
"Stay in the box" is the worst musical take I've ever heard, my dude. No hate. It's just wild that a human being would ever unironically say that about music.
Nah I think I explain it pretty well. Creativity can be sparked by working within a box or set of rules and sometimes when you have too many options and possibilities you end up creating something that feels overproduced and jumbled. Coldplay did a doc or something years and years ago where they wrote down rules for songwriting on one of their records and only broke those rules on rare occasions. Every artist writes their music differently. But to say you can only write “outside the box to create good art” or something like that isn’t true.
and I smoke is one of my absolute favorites... I was praying that they would play it when i saw them last year and they fkn did !!! I just stood there and enjoyed life for the first half of the song
I love Hot Mulligan. I've been a fan for years. Even attended a basement show in Grand Rapids. Just a bunch of us crammed into a tiny basement, screaming our fucking heart's out. Core memory right there.
They released a song about dealing with a family member with dementia (Smahccked My Head Awf) just a few months after my mom's diagnosis. I needed that song so bad and I still listen to it weekly just to help me deal with things. Hot Mulligan can do whatever they want, and that song will forever mean something to me. Also I bumped into Tades at Excellency Music Fest in Bay City, MI in August 2023 and he was very awkward. But I did shake his hand.
First listen to the pod. They open the show with “we don’t want to hate” and he proceeds to hate on hot mulligan immediately lol. It was like watching the end of Seven
Never heard of them until sad summer 2 years ago, and I was blown away since then I've seen them 4 times. Of all bands they're easily the #1 hot new one.
Take the time to learn the lyrics, I promise it’s worth it. They are my all time favorite band and I try to share their music with anyone willing to listen
I was this guy 2 weeks ago. I always heard their name, i just did not really vibe with the vocal style really and nver really intentionally checked them out, but idk I gave *Equips Sunglasses* a chance more than once and the chorus is what pulled me in. And if i like a chorus, I can get myself to like the verses and thus the song. Then that opens me up to more of their stuff, I just need to listen to it more often. And now I would say I'm a fan.
Strangest assessment of a great band. Basically saying everything that makes them great isn't great. I remember in the 90's, my parents would say, "I can't understand what they're saying!" to the music I'd listen to.
Im a massive hot mulligan fan but i don't think they are as diffrent as people are making them out to be I think they feel like an evolved dan era Real Friends
I think what makes them great, is they use all these different elements we've heard before, but it feels fresh because they're just so goddamn good at it. I hear a lot of bands in them. And a lot of the stuff they use from those bands don't even use them anymore. I'd argue Tades sounds more like 2004 Bert McCracken than modern day Bert McCracken. And fuck, I've missed that.
Coming from it as a 2000s pop/skate punk kid that never really got into the emo side of things the Why Would I Watch album really clicked then I see a song drop called The End of Eric Sparrow and the Death of Him and I see that and Im like "Yeah. Fuck Eric Sparrow. Lol" and the music video hit way too fucking close to home reminding me of shit I thought I got over 15 years ago. Weird bonding point with one of my neices, keeps trying to get me into more Emobands
Honestly I had similar takes on hot mulligan when I first heard them but then I watched their live performance from the basement or something like that. The first song they do is a cover of bleed American by Jimmy eat world and I was totally blown away with how damn good it was. I then continued to watch that whole performance and now I'm a huge hot mulligan fan.
Huge Hot Mulligan fan. I like the way she describes their sound. Guttural is a great way to put it. Are you guys only on TH-cam or do you have a podcast version too?
1:40 Am I the only one who heard this sentence and thought, “‘Things of That Nature’ must be the name of a fourth wave emo band I haven’t heard of yet” 😂
Yeah, I said I didn’t really get it or enjoy it, which is the same as gatekeeping, and the reason they’re not headlining tours and fests is entirely on this opinion.
That box analogy is just so fucking weird. I’m not saying that if a band just wants to keep in their lane is wrong or bad, but having all of the possibilities that being outside of the box does create way better music. Obviously you have to learn how to use those possibilities, but you learn that by making mistakes and progressing from them. So yeah, weird take, but I can understand his point and why he makes it.
Song choice up until Good Ol' Mr. Rags wasn't great. Especially if you are trying to get someone to like the band. I would've just told him to listen to Honest and Cunning from start to finish. That EP slaps hard as shit.
You said that you don't understand lyrics... But you're American I guess, at least English is your mother tongue. Imagine that you're French and wanna learn these!!! Plus, you also mention HM shows... Imagine that Hot Mulligan got only one (1) show in your country. (No, couldn't make it, it was too far away and on a week day). Nice video anyway, nice playlist!! 🚙🚙
Coming from the other side of not being a huge hot mulligan fan…. To me it’s always sounded like they took the vocals from one band and laid it over a completely different band and it just always made my brain itch and not in a good way. It was like they threw them all into the recording studio and said “everybody solo”… they have grown on me but after seeing them live twice I still just can’t get into the groove with em
It’s 100% not because of their performance. Tades sounds EXACTLY live like he does on the album, which is INSANE with his vocal strain singing
I fucking love Hot Mulligan
I understand your points about the earlier material, but the new record is like they perfected the balance of their best elements with top notch production.
Don't try to put them in a box, they literally invented their own

>Complains about having to learn the lyrics to get the full impact of a song (?????)
>But is wearing an MCR shirt and talking about Fall Out Boy
>Says the random weird guitar riffs (midwest emo type) take him out of the song
>But complains that the guitar riffs in Green Squirrel are too repetitive and needed to be more interesting and varied
>Says musicians should just stay in a safe box and being experimental/going outside that box is a bad thing
>But immediately goes on to complain that Green Squirrel is too cookie cutter
>Repeatedly dunks on the song names
>But is wearing the shirt of a band with song names like "You know what they do to guys like us in prison" and "It's not a fashion statement, it's a deathwish", and praising Action/Adventure (who is indeed amazing) who has songs like "Frozone, true king in the north"
Posting my Ws thank you.
But the super american version do feel cookie cutter lmao
“We’re done hating” proceeds to hate throughout the whole video 😂

@@EmoSocialClubsure that’s fair for the person creating, but it’s a weird critique for something as the listener.
@@EmoSocialClubthe explanation did you no favours lol
@@EmoSocialClubi see the problem. You just compared H M to Coldplay.
My guy just doesnt like screaming, thats all it is lmao
and I smoke is one of my absolute favorites... I was praying that they would play it when i saw them last year and they fkn did !!! I just stood there and enjoyed life for the first half of the song
it was the first hot mully song that really stood out to me and pushed me into the rest of the bands stuff, love it so much
yeah its easily one of their strongest songs, so well written and that chorus is DISGUSTINGLY catchy
Actually green squirrel in pretty bad shape is originally from you'll be fine
I love Hot Mulligan. I've been a fan for years. Even attended a basement show in Grand Rapids. Just a bunch of us crammed into a tiny basement, screaming our fucking heart's out. Core memory right there.
That does sound incredible ngl

“It’s Ok Small Mistake, you should’ve known that you can’t bother me It’s Ok”
Keep giving them a shot! Genuinely cannot understand wearing a Thank You For The Venom shirt yet disliking these vocals. Embrace the hybrid!
I freaking love this band. They give me Hot Rod Circuit/Get-Up Kids married Taking Back Sunday.
Also, the guitar in "And I Smoke" sounds so much like "Helicopter" by Bloc Party. Glad I'm not the only one to hear that.
First listen to the pod.

i hope this channel never gets recommended to me again
New to the channel so I dont know what you covered but please explore the discography of belmont!
Hot Mulligan rules.
Green squirrel in pretty bad shape is on you’ll be fine ? I’m confused why she said it was just a single
Yeah me too 😭 the version with super American isn't on it tho
And the one she played wasn't even a collab with hot mulligan it was cover 😭
And I Smoke got him 😂 to be fair it’s an absolute bop
I was raised on REM and Pearl Jam… so looking into lyrics is kind of a given.
I really like both of your personalities! Excited to see what else y'all got going on!
Appreciate it!

Basically hot Mulligan it's basically the modern version of motion City soundtrack
I could swore green squirrel came out as a just them version before the coolant version down to him here.
"Bleh" - Lyric of all metal bands
Huge Hot Mulligan fan. I like the way she describes their sound. Guttural is a great way to put it. Are you guys only on TH-cam or do you have a podcast version too?
We do have a pod version! On all the platforms, you can check emosocialclub.com for the links
Dary was the song that did it for me. After I heard that song everything else hit different. I love HM
1:40 Am I the only one who heard this sentence and thought, “‘Things of That Nature’ must be the name of a fourth wave emo band I haven’t heard of yet” 😂
You’ve just manifested this.
I dont why everyone thinks Opportunities is an album 😭😭
Hot mulligan is today's best pop punk band. They are INCREDIBLE
New to me that they are a pop punk band
in hot mulligan's defence, i think they did much better in terms of being able to understand the lyrics with their new single. Sticklers of Brian.
Warning, boring gate keeper ahead!
Yeah, I said I didn’t really get it or enjoy it, which is the same as gatekeeping, and the reason they’re not headlining tours and fests is entirely on this opinion.

So yeah, weird take, but I can understand his point and why he makes it.
I feel like if you understand my point then it’s not that weird.
Also guttural is the perfect word
Song choice up until Good Ol' Mr. Rags wasn't great. Especially if you are trying to get someone to like the band. I would've just told him to listen to Honest and Cunning from start to finish. That EP slaps hard as shit.
This dude is annoying.
Subscribe anyway
I agree
Boy had a soft life and should be thankful he doesn’t resonate with hot mulligan. Not sure how they ended up on an emo podcast.
Pilot is such a great album. I Hate Hot Gooey Disk & *whispers* Thank You are my anchors. Do Ben Quad next
Motion City soundtrack. Hm is an anazing band.
They have Get Up Kids vibes
You said that you don't understand lyrics... But you're American I guess, at least English is your mother tongue. Imagine that you're French and wanna learn these!!! Bro pop punk music?! Pop punk is simple chord progressions, their riffs are a lot more complicated than pop punk. Lord come on.

I love the idea of this podcast
I replied to tyler with 3 blue cars goat :)
