I remember one rainy night I watched Nostalgia many a years ago, and at the end, I was so overwhelmed by emotion, that I had to leave the house, I walked in the rain for hours, not knowing where, it is as if I have discovered something inside me, hidden away. Tarkovsky; one of the few directors who ever reached perfection.
I'm all tears every time I see this. It's a dream, a dream, a childhood dream with the fear and the cold warmness of the world. He's a pre historical coke jurassica man. Tarkovski.
I have always found this sequence in the film deeply haunting and moving somehow. My mother brought some prints back from Russia that show a young boy in front of a rural home with his dog in the snow...it made me think of this scene.
To me the meaning of the fusion of these two scenarios represents a communion, Sergei is nostalgic of Russia throughout the film, but at the end when he's compelled to take the candle three times back and forth in the pool, seen as perhaps a transference of hope, he becomes inextricably tied to Italy; the songs at the beggining of the film also suggests this, a Russian(?) woman's chant fuses with the Requiem by Verdi.
@contigo121 very dramatic scene. This is what can never come true. Your HOME (where we were spiritually born, and spiritually germinated throughout years and years with our relatives that by the time might've died or some of them) has moved to another country where you think your life would be better. But having lived there for some time you started missing your motherland but still can't move back - so the only thing you're dreaming about day and night is your home here which is impossible.
@RonAlmeida it was done in real time.you see it in a documentary about Tarkovsky.Thats why this is maybe the greatest special effect in cinema history.Brilliant
Olga Sergeeva: "Oh Kumushki" Oh, my girlfriends, be sweet; be sweet and love each other, be sweet and love each other, Love me too. You will go to the green garden, take me with you. You will pick flowers, Pick some for me too. You will weave garlands, take me with you. You will go to the Donau, take me with you. You will offer your wreaths to the river, offer mine too. Your wreaths will float on the water, but mine will sink to the bottom. Your boyfriends came back from the war! Mine didn't return.
Proshai, Radost' Farewell, happiness, my very life, I hear you are leaving me. It seems that I must part with you, And never to see you again. CHORUS Dark the night is; Oh, how I long for sleep! Well I know the reason why You and only you, my dear, Come to me in every moment And taunt my mind, that knows no peace.
@cuallito Excellent comment! How did the man manage such a shot ? Did he use Just two still shots to animate the movement or did he really shoot it in real time? See what todays technology could do in the right hands than in the hands of idiots who have most of the the access to it.
check out the tarot card THE MOON, and contemplate not only the visual correspondence (wich is completly the same) but try to find some material on the significance of the card. It matches the film PERFECTLY. HE'S A FUCKING BRUJO!!! LONG LIVE TARKOVSKY!!!!

Can anyone please tell me [for sure] the title (and lyrics, if possible) of the folk song starting in 1:00+?
Olga Sergeeva: "Oh Kumushki"

Mine didn't return.
Proshai, Radost'
Farewell, happiness, my very life,
I hear you are leaving me.
It seems that I must part with you,
And never to see you again.
CHORUS
Dark the night is;
Oh, how I long for sleep!
Well I know the reason why
