Thanks for showing us these flaws on this S650 DH. As a current 2019 S550 GT owner, from this, looks like these early batch production units still have the same general sort of surface and finishing QC issues as the entirety of the S550 program. One thing, the driver rear quarter panel edge that has the paint cracked off the corner - that is due to a drip or run. Since the bumper fitment is tight and precise (which itself is a good thing), when assembly of the bumper happened, it cracked the run/drip off. The passenger rear quarter panel wheel well edge, where the debris was noted - that is an appalling example of larger debris not getting filtered out before painting occurred. Either it was in the paint itself, or it was already on the body. Scratches on the RR quarter glass, that is sloppy-a** removal of the factory stickers and adhesive, by dealer during PDI - looks like someone used too sharp a blade or something.
One thing Ford did at the Flat Rock, MI, plant where these are assembled, they invested heavily just prior to the S550 program, in the body shop area - it has ostrich feather rollers, that the body in white (BIW) rolls through, supposedly to remove any remaining surface contaminants, just prior to painting. It's clear that none of this is working very well.
Expectations should definitely be managed when it comes to surface QC expectations from any of the domestic OEs. As a Mustang, the plastic panel gaps and slightly exposed clips are somewhat of a non-issue. But *MAJOR* paint, dust and debris issues on painted metal surfaces is a big factor, which can lead to corrosion. Even from factory, at all OEs, can't expect perfection - tiny super isolated dust nibs are normal. However, large ones are not. My own S550, in black, bought new off the showroom, had quite a few here and there, but I didn't let it bother me, and the hassle of asking the dealer repaint, with the risk of them ruining something else on the car while in their possession wasn't worth it. However, with the prices being asked for vehicles lately, including this Dark Horse example, approaching $100k depending on equipment, right away, people become - rightly so - much more critical of the much more blatantly egregious issues noted in this vid.

    • @ClickbaitMotorsports
      @ClickbaitMotorsports 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

The problem is that the S650 is more expensive, uglier, slower and heavier than the S550. These imperfections become a bigger deal at this point. Unacceptable.

My brand new 2017 GT350 had so many paint issues. I had to have almost the whole car repainted. Thankfully Ford covered it all but it was not amazing having a brand new shelby that has been almost fully repaint. I worked as a paint engineer in the summer, typically you get that when it’s sprayed really wet and heavy (usually to meet orange peel targets and achieve color match). Paint suppliers can heavily influence the need to paint heavy. As far as the air bubble could’ve been caused by water on the raw plastic, which didnt get dried or blown off correctly.

One thing to remember, it's the manufacturer at fault here (not the dealers, as much as everyone wants to blame them). There's a certain standard in the auto manufacturing industry that allows for certain defect types/sizes on certain panels of a car/ truck. Pretty much, the lower on the vehicle the defect is, the higher the tolerance to ship it. The same goes for gaps on panels and trim pieces. Those blisters/boils and chipped though, should've been caught at the EOL (end of line) section of the factory to be repaired before shipping. Hopefully the customer can take it to the dealer and relay this back to the manufacturer. My source, I used to work at the "paint hospital" of a major car manufacturer. All I did was "paint repair " on defects such as these or larger and fix em to factory finish/standard.

One of them was you could see the headlight mounting points where the bumper meets under the headlight. I also saw some peeling paint in the areas that you showcased. If I were going to buy one of these cars I would wait until they get their act together. I’m very picky as well. I believe, my opinion, that small deflector in front of the rear wheel opening (at 18:00) is there for one or both of these reasons: 1. governmental regulation requires a shield if the tire is outside of the bodywork,' 2. it could be there for aerodynamics to send the airstream away from the wheel opening.

    • @hotshtsr20

Aero. Tire/wheel acts as a pump and by kicking the air out around it, you give that air somewhere to go without disrupting airflow as much.

I love watching your videos to learn but I agree with the disease part, I watch this one reluctantly because I don't want to learn how to spot these things and then never be able to un-see them lol, but agree that some seem to really pop out only in LED lights under specific circumstances (in our case we have a city lighting post outside or home that at night lights up, it's useful after washing cars for me to see what I missed).
But still I want to learn, even if in my case it's just caring for our boring daily drivers (a minivan and a crossover) because that means they'll look new/great years down the road. Heck I still remember one time I was pulled over for ehm, speed reasons, and the cop stroke up some slight investigative (but still genuine) conversation about how my 08 car still looked so shiny some 8 years later. My goal is that in 3 years my wife's minivan will still have all those piano black/gloss black surfaces mostly scratch free while newer cars will already look swirled and faded, and with a black on white car, that makes the white paint really pop.

The money I saved on these protection assuming 4-5 cars most people would buy in that time frame equates to brand new car for free.

I bought a brand new '18 Explorer for my wife. 30k miles goes by and the front hood edge looks like corrosion under the paint. It was bubbling up. I took it to a dealership that delt with a well-known local body shop. The service manager took pics of the edge and told me he'd contact Ford.
Months went by, and he finally called me and said Ford agreed to fix the issue. But he said it would be covered under the normal warranty, not the corrosion warranty they claim to have.
When I scheduled for the body shop to have it, I was told I had to pay for the rental and get reimbursed. When I found out how much a rental was for the same model explorer, it was a quarter what they said they'd pay for the rental. Rental was supposedly covered under my warranty. Long story short, Ford finally agreed to pay the rental charge. I believe it helped that the dealer I used actually rented cars out, so it was a dealer renting it to me.
After the repair was done, I submitted for reimbursement. The charges were on my credit card because they required a card for payment for the rental. Ford then sent me a breakdown on cost. The taxes were omitted, and it stated they do not reimburse taxes. Something no one mentioned till now. So over $150 not being reimbursed. Then they sent me a debit card with the refund on it.
The only problem with that is that I could not apply the card to my credit card to pay it off. No cash advance, no gas pumps. It could only be used for retail sales. Such bs. They said that's how they always issue reimbursement. I ended up swiping the card with my square, and lost another 50something for fees. It's so ridiculous that they require a credit card to rent, but you can't pay that off. So what was supposed to be a free warranty item ended up still costing me money.
I was happy with the paint shop and they did an excellent job repairing the hood.
Not knowing the reimbursement process is what made me irritated. Why would you force someone to pay for a rental, then make it where they can't pay that off? And to top that off, before I was reimbursed, they had me submit a 2nd time the credit card receipt for proof of payment of the rental car.
They know you're not allowed to pay a card with a card and to not allow cash advance is just ridiculous.

    Interesting Vid!
The paint peeling in all of the wheel-well corners is a bit odd...almost like too much paint followed by too quick of a cure? A painter would know.
I'm am a huge Ford fan but some of their work lately is quite concerning. Not to mention what the CEO is doing to the company, but we wont go there.
Last year I was looking to get an F-250 and they had a Velocity Blue one sitting on the lot. The more I looked at it, the paint didn't look right.
The sheen was off, and the orange peel didn't seem consistent. I continued to poke around (like you do) and bingo, I found overspray on the door handles!
I don't know why both sides had been reshot. Maybe it got key'd? I don't know. But seeing your vid, and others that have surfaced about quality issues, I am very suspect of Ford these days.

After owning a 2020 Mustang GT premium with every option imaginable.. I'll never own another ford again. The thing was junk from the get go...
    1) There were micro dents all over it. (I purchased it new with 3 miles on it) There were pin sized dents on the A-pillar hood, etc. Not sure how they got there but I didn't notice until I got home (1 mile drive home) the dealership was less than helpful. I had to pay out of pocket to get the pin size dents removed. (the paint in general "magnetic grey" wasn't great, had to be extensivly paint corrected and again, micro dents removed before I could get a xPel wrap put on it)
    2) the backup camera didn't work from day 1 and took 6 months for them to replace it. I was told to "look backwards".
    3) It developed the BBQ tick 3 months after I purchased it at 1.5k miles. It would just tick and tick loudly.. basically it sounded like your car does after you drive it and shut it off and you hear the metal ticking as it cools down, except this happens when the car is running. Obviously not a great thing to hear. I took it to Ford they said "it's normal". Yeah, it's normal to make a clink, clink sound randomly.. obviously doesn't sound right and is almost embarassing a new car sounds like that.
    4) the 6 speed manual transmission from China.. yeah, that thing SUCKED.. I guess I'm spoiled from my Corvettes that have a Tremec, but come on.. that thing was horrible... enough said there.
I could go on with the quality issues but who has the time? I sold the damn thing 1 year after owning it and couldn't get rid of it fast enough.

@@ChicagoAutoPros I didn't. I assume they happened at the factory or when it was shipped. Because I saw the car on the lot (in the showroom to be specific) it was always under really favorable lighting where the flakes in the paint really hid the dents. Once I got it home and again my house was just 1 mile away just took a couple mins to get home.. I noticed a small pin head style dent without scratches in the a-pillar. Then another one on the driver's door in the same size and style. Then when I went to get the paint xPel wrapped, they did what you did and went around and found a bunch more dents all over the car. They had to do Paintless dent removal to get them fixed as much as possible before they wrapped it. I had to eat the cost because the dealership claimed they're not responsible. The car had 4 miles on it when I complained to them.. to no avail.
