Iommi actually had to tune his guitar lower. On his last day at the metal sheeting factory, he accidentally chopped off two fingertips on his right hand (Tony's left-handed) with a press. He fabricated some plastic tips from bottle-tops, but it was still too painful to play with regular string tension, so he tuned his guitar lower to make the tension less. It's what became the trademark guitar sound of Black Sabbath. Low, humming and menacing.
In April of 1974 I made the trip from San Diego to Ontario Motor Speedway in Riverside County. A few other 100K did as well. California Jam 1 was the West Coast Woodstock I remember it being referred to as. Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Rare Earth and the Eagles were just a few of the bands that performed, I don't feel that I can leave out Earth Wind and Fire as well. I got to see Black Sabbath shortly after in a San Diego show shortly after. Sabbath had a few mantras that I would vibe my life with lol
Cool that you've reacted to 5 out of the first 6 Sabbath albums!!! If you want a song from their 3rd album AND if you want to stick to the same "theme" as this song try "Sweet Leaf"!!! Of course, "Into The Void" and "Children of the Grave" are MUST DO's!!!!
When they wrote this song (1972) they had a $75,000 budget just for coke. They would get it flown in by private plane. Geezer Butler wrote the lyrics and admitted that the drug was the band's worst enemy.
This was the Never Say Die tour the last one with Ozzy. This was my first concert saw them in Cleveland in '78 Van Halen opened. It was unbelievably loud my ears were ringing for the next couple of days.
@robertserafin-uc3qn i saw van halen open for ted nugent in D.C. and they blew nugent off the stage. When I saw them open for black sabbath, a few weeks later Sabbath put on a great show. I'd say it was about even.
@gingercarner8733 Jagger was never a big drug taker or drinker and has looked himself for many years. Ron Wood is a different story, though ,him and Keith are a mystery to medical science 😁
I thought Toni de tuned his guitar mainly because of losing his fingertips and it hurt to play. As far as I know, that's how they got their sound. Still love it. Oh yea, they have another song talking about Vietnam vets coming back hooked on heroin, "Hand of Doom" which continues into "Rat Salad". You talk about a musical experience, this is it. Thanks again for the great reaction.
Something you haven't noticed is that Tony Iommi is wearing some plastic tips on his fretting fingers. At the age of 17 he lost the tips of his middle & ring fingers in an industrial accident at a sheet metal factory. He had to make the guitar strings slacker to make it easier on the fingers. This kind of downtuning created the heavy sound that started a genre.
I might have mentioned that in a previous video or asked a question about it. Amazing he persisted and found a way to become one of the best. Thanks again for this one and happy birtday!
Great choice 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 Maybe try Changes off the same album. Ozzy and his daughter, Kelly did a version of it a few years ago. A few other people have also done covers of it. A mellow song by BS standards
Sorry everbody here..Black Sabbath was a little too out there for me, but I do and always will appreciate their talent. Drugs were a big thing for many bands, as well as alcohol. I grew up with more easy listening music and some psychedelic. That's just where this 70 y.o.'s head is at. Great reaction to Ozzy and the band, Saeed. Thank you. Much love to you and your family ❤️ 🫂
🎉 Black Sabbath was always a little too HEAVY for me. That being said, Steppenwolf did a FANTASTIC song called “Snowblind Friend” (1970). They also did “The Pusher,” (1968) which was a Hoyt Axton cover (famous Country & Western singer/songwriter/guitarist/actor from the 60’s). What you need to know is: BOTH Steppenwolf songs got a LOT of airtime on the radio; Black Sabbath did not. “The Pusher” and “Snowblind Friend” are Classics that you NEEED to hear. The lyrics will touch you, my friend.
@@SaeedReacts. Lots of killer songs from Steppenwolf. The vocalist John Kay (Joachim Fritz Krauledat) was born in Tilsit in East Prussia, which is now Sovetsk in Russia, in 1944. At one his mother took him and fled as the Russian tanks rolled closer (his father had been killed a month before his birth). They ended up stranded in the Soviet controlled sector of Germany, but in 1949 were helped across the border to Hamburg. If they had been seen they would have been shot. In 1958 the family moved to Toronto. The song "Renegade" details that journey. I reckon you'd enjoyed that telling.
@@SaeedReacts. I have it on my iPod classic. Got it from Napster years ago 😂. It’s a full studio recording of the cover. I’m sure it was on an import single or something like that. I have all their studio albums, which I actually bought, and it’s not on any of those.

They were so bad-ass! "Sweet Leaf" would be the natural followup to this one!

Thanks for that recommendation! Definitely want to explore more.
You are killing it with my two favorite bands. Sabbath and SKYNYRD. Keep up the great work 👍
Awesome music! In 10 minutes another Black Sabbath reaction will be posted.

Damn! Glad i never had that much money 😅🤣

The last one with Ozzy in the 70's.
Bill Ward 🤘
Gotta check out Dirty Women from this same concert. Tony goes nuts!
I saw this tour, 1978 with Van Halen as the opening band. Never Say Die tour.
@@neillenet291 > I read that Van Halen blew Sabbath off stage , Eddie Van Halen was that Good

Notice that Iommi was center stage.
In this case, the studio version is far superior.
I would not say it is far superior, it is just different. This version is heavier.
The lyrics to this are amazing.
100%
Now watch Black Sabbath With Ronnie James Dio RIP Children of the Sea at Radio city Hall in NY . Ozzy and Dio have their own unique styles thanks
Definitely want to check out songs with him as well. Have heard great things.
STYX SNOWBIND.
got this dvd great show
Ozzy, Dio, Ian Gillan and Tony Martin each brought something different to Sabbath in their own right
Tony Iommi cut off some of his fingertips at work (age 17). in order to play guitar further he had to use thinner strings and turn the tension lower
Damn! Glad he persisted!
JAGGER, RICHARDS, OZZY...A small handful of others have defied the odds and give the rest of us a bit of hope for longevity...😂😂😂
If they never had lived this lifestyle they were probably going to be 200 years old 🤣
@gingercarner8733 Jagger was never a big drug taker or drinker and has looked himself for many years. Ron Wood is a different story, though ,him and Keith are a mystery to medical science 😁
Supernaught
Ozzy was fired by their drummer , Bill Ward. They weren't selling records like the earlier 70's They blamed Ozzy but it was all of them

Must check those out at some point. Thanks for watching!
Black Sabbath 1968-eternity🤘
That one is on my list.
Of course they can perform on it it's an upper it gets you going cocaine was known in the industry as Capricorn records favorite drug
It can have opposite effects as well. Ofcourse i only know this by hearsay

Ozzy is definitely struggling here with the guitars tuned to E standard instead of C sharp. I think the newer songs were tuned to a higher key.

Must check it out. I think i know the chorus. Eminem used it in his song Going through Changes.
@@SaeedReacts. I think he did 👍🏻👍🏻
What to listen to next for Sabbath? All of it ;)
😄

@@SaeedReacts. “The Pusher” was used in the movie “Easy Rider,” but I like “Snowblind Friend” better…it’s more heartfelt.

When you are doing a gang of coke and you sing a song about it you are making magic. 😂
😄😄😄😄
System of a Down do an excellent cover of this song, if you can find it.

More like 1976-77
Thanks for letting me know!
