    The best piece of advice I've ever been given is that you don't, and cannot, rely upon MOTIVATION to finish a project. You rely on DISCIPLINE. You need to form solid habits to make progress every, single, day. Even when you really don't want to, you force yourself to sit down and do ONE thing. Create a single variable, update a configuration, add a TODO card, something. Building this habit, and discipline, is far more important than trying to bottle lighting, or capture motivation. Progress is made one small step at a time, not going leap to leap. Hope this helps someone, it has sure helped me.

      I think motivation isn't a solution to complete anything. It's always discipline. Motivation just gives some moral boost that quickly dies.

    • @DrHippo
      @DrHippo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@parthajeetsarmah4529 "quickly dies" - True, although It's possible to nurture and prolong or even resuscitate motivation by tricking yourself. That requires a journey inwards to understand what drives you so that's unlikely to happen if you just start out. But as you say, relying on motivation alone is not enough.

    Great video, lots of great advice! I definitely recommend starting small and more importantly actually finish!
    There's many things involved in making a game more than just basic gameplay, if you're constantly jumping between prototype to prototype there's a lot you won't learn. So stick with a project and finish it!

    Hey, professional game dev here to say that this advice in this video is actually pretty good. One thing that wasn't well explained is that visual scripting is still coding in tge end of the day, just presented differently. That's why learning code is important, because you'll be doing it in some shape or form in thr end.

    • @jbaidley
      @jbaidley 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, what I was going to say. Visual is easier to pick up at first, mostly because you don't have to understand syntax, but it starts holding you back very quickly.

I think it would also fit the game really well, because the style is also cartoony-type and it's family-friendly nature, so maybe... also love ur vids!

    Honestly good advice. I've been learning Unreal Engine and Blender for 8 months (mostly UE), and I have nothing close to a game. I can do all sorts of things, and lots of things very well, but there was no goal, so there's no game. For me that's fun, but if you want to make a game, planning and understanding scope is definitely a skill you should include.

    I really liked this kind of video. I think the best tip of the video is to start small. It doesn't matter if your first game has bad art, has simple mechanics, or is boring. What matters is that you made a game. Now you can keep making and finishing games that will get slightly bigger and better everytime. So start simple and work your way up.

    I started programming when I was 8 with just the most basic programming language, Scratch. What I would recommend is starting with that just to wrap your head around how computers work and "think", then start making games in unity

  • @AndyRealFish
    @AndyRealFish 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My first game was actually a flappy bird clone (Flappy Bomb...). It really teaches you a lot to finish your first SMALL game. Not to mention the feeling of accomplishment and the motivation it gives to tackle bigger projects. Then I went on to follow a loooong tutorial on YT that teached me how to make a game completely from scratch in Unity. Created a total of 10 games before I am now starting to learn Unreal. My prior knowledge from Unity really helps me understand Unreal quicker.

  • @jak3legacy

    There are tons of free and / or very cheap 3d assets out there that you absolutely can re-material / re-texture in engine (at least in Unreal) to make the assets unique. Esp if you're doing something that's 3d and lofi.

    My single point of failure was sticking to one game, I only wanted to create this one awesome game, and if I completed it I would be set for life, I started this back in 2003, Its still not finished, I doubt it will ever be finished, the importance of making small games and lots of them cannot be overstated, the full cycle, all the loose ends needing to be tidied up to finish a game will give you experience found no where else, put your big ideas on a back burner and prove you can finish ten - yea TEN small games, be them copies or original, whatever before tackling the the big one. and if your big idea flops, you have a ready made portfolio.
    Another point I'd raise is the game engine doesn't matter, because sooner or later you will need to swap to one of the others, its the experience that counts, I suspect porting the ten games you already made to a new engine would be a great start.
    This is the video I needed eighteen years ago. - now go and watch it again!

      i'd be a little dissapointed in you if you're working on a game from 2003 and i doesn't turn out like cyberpunk 2077 or even better! make sure to work hard. you don't have ti finish that game if you're getting bored. But you , for sure, have learned so much from a 18 years journey. You can keep the pace on the current project or start another and this time you gotta set the deadline other wise you're gonna procrastinate and not finish it before a very long time when you already have lost the interest. I recommend game jams since they do the same thing and you can have a chance to know other game developer just like you and make friends or eventually make an indie game studio team to make a god-like game! Good luck my boy, kkeep going and play it smart!

    I mostly agree with this video apart from that you have to start with 2d, you know, I started with 3d and you can just get a crazy amount of free 3d assets so you don't HAVE to learn 3d modeling software like blender, i started out with doing stuff like level design with free megascan assets with ue4 and got interested in rendering and watched The Cherno (very nice guy btw) and it wasn't sp hard to make a tiny game in 3d with a template and adit it to your own likings and learn 3d like that and i love it its not THAT much harder as 2d

    Little suggestion: try to use a little better the youtube chapters of the video. For example you could split it up in the different questions you answered: such as "what engine should I choose?", "how do I learn to code?",... etc. That's because if someone doesn't have any doubt about some of your questions they can skip the question without losing time. Anyway great video!

    I got to give a tip for who is Brazilian - beacuse the language is portuguese - and works with unity, there's a course in udemy, and it's excellent. It's not mine and I'm not an affiliate, I just really love the course.
    The name is: Se torne um desenvolvedor de jogos 2D com o unity

    Pontypants i what to correct you here for a second C++ and C# are the same with literally a view differentness

    Look at that BEARD! 💪 IMO, visual scripting is a good entry/introduction to programming. At its roots, visual scripting is simplified programming. So yes you should learn programming, and to help you along that path, start with visual scripting. 👌

    Ponteypants do think that the walking animation of punch a bunch is a bit slidy so I would recommend is looking for a boxer walk style to animate over. or just recording yourself walk like a boxer to animate over it.

    Take it from someone who studied Games Engineering for 5 years: I enlisted to learn how to make games. I learned how to make games online. At university, I learned a bunch of math and AI and NONE of it is necessary to start making games. Yes, you can get a deeper understanding of how the tech works that you're using, but you can absolutely get by without it.

    • @hstubbs3
      @hstubbs3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Seconded....
      I started programming in the 80s with BASIC on Apple IIe and TI 99/4a ... And moved to C/C++ on DOS and reading like Dr Dobbs magazines when I was a teen in the 90s.. Learned all about raycasting, the DOOM engine, early ... I've seen so many post mortems, how-to's, algorithms, tricks, etc over the years.. I've made starts at making my own games with C++ for DOS, Windows 95, Windows XP... C# / XNA later on.. I even bought and read the textbook on RealTime Collision Detection ...
      You don't need any of that starting out... Just a solid set of tools and good documentation, tutorials, and community to learn from... The rest of it - the AI, the math - you can learn if/when it matters to your current project.
      BTW - if you're pretty handy with the Maths, I am trying to wrap my brain around calculating the impulse imparted by a directed sound wave / blast wave to some object within a given time step.. I figured if I model the wave front as the outer surface of the intersection of a cone and a sphere, where rSphere = d * t , then I should just have to find the volume that surface traces through some object during the time step and multiply that by the pressure of the wave over the surface area of the wave front..
      I'm still a little lost how the vector component of the force is handled for this case - having the magnitude is fine, but how to calculate if the object is pushed back, spun around, etc..
      all that trying to make a rubbie duck quack realistically affect a toy hovercraft...

    I studied C and C++ for years and i prefer to write my own engines when i want to do something specific. But i would still recommend unity for all beginners. Its gud, its not very intimidating and it works. Thats all you want

      I think for people who aren't very into code but want to learn and also get an easy-to-use engine, Godot is probably the best choice. It's custom coding language (GDScript) is very easy to learn, and it's so easy to read compared to most languages that it's almost like pseudo-code, not to mention the interface of the engine is very easy to understand and get used to compared to most other engines I've used.
