- Motorsport was put on hiatus this year by worldwide lockdowns but competitive sim racing esports, taking place in highly realistic racing games, has stepped in to fill the gap. Outside Xbox's motor racing superfan Mike Channell has lucked into participating in some top-level multiplayer competition and wants you to see all the best bits. Here are the seven coolest things about becoming a sim racing esports 'pro'.
As a participant in the ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge in support of Unicef, Mike competed on the PC sim rFactor 2, which is a painstakingly realistic racing simulator. He also appeared in Challenge Heineken Legends on F1 2019, which is the official Formula One game.

I know it's not a real "sim" but I used to play Cruisin' Exotica a lot and wow... the precision I could manage after playing a course repeatedly vs when I hadn't played recently was incredible. But also the level of precision I managed on my best efforts didn't FEEL that different, but the track times said otherwise. Accidentally nudging a car at the start instead of a clean pass? You'd think it'd be a few seconds, but in reality the delay meant I had to work harder to pass the other drivers later, which slowed me down even more.
More so when I developed the muscle memory to actually pass properly when the AIs were acting crazy.
I dont care too much about racing and cars, but just seeing Mikes enthusiasm and passion for the subject and getting to do these races made me smile.
So Jane's been on an astronaut training course. Mike's done (virtual) Formula E. When's Andy's cowboy adventure in the wilds of Wyoming?

As a little girl I adored F1 but genuinely believed the closest I could possibly get was becoming a pit doll. It didn't even occur to me until I was older that I could be a driver. It's amazing what representation can do.

I think he meant along the lines of he would have watched this video or enjoyed it as much if Mike wasn't talking about it or showed how much he genuinely loved the experience.
^yeah that's exactly what I meant. If anyone else posted a video about a racing sim I'd probably skip over it but seeing Mike's genuine enthusiasm for the genre is very entertaining to me. I'm not about to start playing them though.
There's just something sublimely nice about getting to see Mike experience some of his dreams be made virtual reality
one of the things that i think mike is particularly good at is explaining things that can be quite technical or complex in a really clear and competent way - where you get to feel like an insider (and not talked down to at all) and also walk away a bit mire knowledgeable. this video sits right in that sweet spot!
I love this style of video. It's great to hear the presenters talk about their interests, I've noticed that's when they come alive.
Don't be embarrassed about being last, repping Porsche or jaguar in a real formula e race is an awesome achievement.

I actually really like this style of video with Mike, I don't care about racing at all but this was really enjoyable

It’s not all good though, the winners have had to clean up so much champagne they’ve still felt compelled to spray all over their living room
It's been great to see Mike Popping up in the various virtual races I've watched. As a huge fan of both Oxbox and motor racing it just makes me happy to see Mike doing all this great racing stuff.

also, it's a selected few out of thousand that get to drive those cars and the same applies to the sim community, so even him getting 15 seconds slower, still fast enough to make people head spin.

I’m one of those OX fans that loves motorsport and this video was really cool to see. I’m the same as you, I’d like to be a sim racer but I’m not quite quick enough. But it was good to see you racing and the gains you made over a short time are definitely admirable, you should be proud of the progress against some pretty top competition! Great video Mike :)

I'd watch an OX stream of mike sim racing for sure. maybe talking through his strategy and movements with a cohost who's minding the chat, etc?
I've had to catch up with so many videos because I've been working in a frontline NHS role for the duration of the pandemic, this made me so happy to watch, I'm so glad it was such a great experience. People achieving their dreams, you love to see it.

We’ve seen Andy and Luke’s Disney park adventures, Jane’s astronaut training (which, being honest, was the best thing that came from Andromeda’s release), and now Mike’s E-Sim racing experience.
This is great Mike. Really enjoyed it.
We need more content like this, not just racing from Mike (Though i'd love that so freaking much) content where they can just enthuse about something they're really passionate about.
I've wondered sometimes if they would ever consider starting another Xtra TH-cam channel that isn't about games, but the various passions/hobbies they each have.
I'd love to see videos of Jane and Andy enthusiastic about fitness training, maybe sharing tips on the subject too.

So freaking cool that Mike gets to play with the big boys with none of the "what the hell you playing at?" rhetoric. Just total acceptance; the way it should be.
I 100% understand the being in awe of someone at the top of the game in something so precise and requiring so much consistency as an air rifle shooter when you get to compete alongside top level shooters I think it’s the same feeling
It's been so exciting to see Mike participate in these races. Mike's enthusiasm for this stuff is so contagious.
I've been in turn 3 of the 500 every year since 2000, Dario is very loved in Indy. Kind of a weird pocket of racing culture in Indiana, lots of back road dirt tracks and drag strips that are easy to miss if your just passing through. An old farm house with a gravel driveway, basketball hoop above the garage and a midget car half visible under a tarp is a sight of my childhood I'll never forget.

I'm no fan of motorsport but hearing about your fanboy love of this sort of thing is a pure joy. It's clear your child-like desire to be a racer allows your propensity for video games qualifies you to challenge the best of the business. I'm sooooo happy for you! :D

I'm all for Formula E, it's cool to see what's possible as a purely electric vehicle. Missed my opportunity to see it for real in Montreal 2016, the tickets were too rich for my blood.
Honestly, I have no idea on IRL cars. I can't even play car games because it causes me nausea/vertigo (same with first-person games).
BUT I have watched all of Mike's car game videos; this one, the one whit "cars don't work that way", the one where he got the new rig, etc.
It is just because it is delightful to see how happy and enthusiastic he is on getting to make that video. :-)
This is great content, Mike seems truly in his element here. More motorsports content here would be the icing on the cake for me from this lovely channel.

I would’ve shown up for the races but had no idea about. I use TH-cam way more than any social media app and the channel didn’t put out a notice for most of them. I remember first hearing about the races on Show Of The Week.

I've honestly never been a huge car or racing fan but the amount of passion and love that Mike has for the subjects makes me want to become one.
I have no interest in cars and racing myself, but watching Mike speaking so passionately about it is interesting and enjoyable. He speaks about cars like I talk about K-ON.
I have been waiting for a video like this ever since Mike's - "Cars don't work that way you guys." More of Mike and cars please.
To expand on what Mike was saying as a tip for anyone interested in getting into simracing: Don't just do hotlapping and get frustrated if you can't match the fastest drivers. The important thing isn't setting a specific lap time once but being able to do it consistently lap after lap after lap, always look at your average not your fastest time, and you will gain places when all the hotlappers go over the limit and put their cars in the wall in the race.
I'm not really a fan of sim racing, but I'm a BIG fan of Mike. I'm so happy for him, and I loved watching him passionately talking about it!
TBH I could not care less about racing but i adore seeing Mike gush about racing (and Jane about space.)
This was absolutely dope - I always appreciate Mike's vids for making both a genre of games (racing sims & driving games in general) as well as the real life sport itself so accessible & interesting. This sort of thing would never be my jam usually, but he's so charmingly nerdy about it all that I always find these vids so compelling.

Never been into motor racing, but watching Mike race with his sheer knowledge and pleasure is an absolute joy
So jealous of you, I like to view myself as a reasonably quick sim-racer but obviously don't have the connections to be invited to this sort of thing. It's great that TH-camrs and content creators are invited though, so you can share all of your awesome experiences with us! Taking on the iRacing 24 hours of Le Mans in a couple of weeks so that's my next big challenge.

What a brilliant Video. I love seeing People sharing their passion for something in such a way it completely draws you in. I'm not a Car Person at all (I reversed a Car once) but I've been glued watching Mike during His Sim Racing.
Mike, you are an inspiration. Love seeing the car stuff you create, and hearing that you were in some of the sim racing during lockdown, I couldn't wait to see the inevitable video. So my day is now spoken for, time to go digging for those races you were in.

Simona De Silvestro was one of my fave V8 Supercar drivers, she left at the end of last year to become a one of Porsche's Formula E factory drivers. Also, many years ago, she was the test driver for Sauber's F1 team!

That is so cool, that as a hardcore racing fan you got to share a virtual track with some of your heroes. With the world so screwed up with all this COVID-19 business, content like this, honest-to-God feel-good stories, is exactly what everyone needs. Can I just draw additional attention to the fact that the concepts of talent and enjoyment are and should be completely separate. I'm so glad Mike touched on that subject here!
Too often modern society is too focussed on results alone, while honestly enjoyment should be the nr1 goal.
Are you amazingly talented in something you don't particularly enjoy? It's perfectly fine to quit and you don't "owe" anyone anything, it is not "a waste" if you do quit.
Are you average or even completely rubbish at something you love doing? You go for it! And don't ever let anyone get you down!
(This is in no way a commentary on Mike's performance here, I don't even know enough of e-racing to know what is good/adept/etc, but he mentioned this concept briefly in this video and it's something that is NOT mentioned enough)
This must be so cool to be a part of. I love sim racers but I'm nowhere near good enough to get within even 10 laps of these pros. Fantastic watching your enthusiasm for this, Mike!
It was an excellent, fun and enthusiastic video Mike made about Forza 4 that convinced me to take the plunge and buy an Xbox One S when I'd been strictly a lifelong playstation console owner.

Mike i never comment but i want to share my love this time because you, and jane and andy, absolutely deserve it for all you do.. you, and also oxtra of course, are always a smart and heartful probe in the gaming industry and a toughtful bunch of people interested in what happens in the world and keen in involving people in what you think is important in the society! i may be not the loudest fan but i surely am an extremely apreciating one! keep on rocking.
To be brutally honest racing sims have never been my thing, I'm a Burnout lover and I don't watch F1 or anything but I watched this video in its entirety and learned loads. Great to hear about you doing something that you are so passionate about and even I know how big a deal racing with Coulthard is.
Also learning about Formula E was great as well.
