I'm not sure where, but I read a post saying that Pipp's wings are unique and she's the only one that has them. The rest of Pegasi, however, have wings similar to those that Zipp Storm has.
I think that maybe she didn't have wings to begin with so her parents made wings for her since she's pegusus royalty and having a non-pegusus would be enbarrasing.
So if this is the case, i would love that. The dynamic between a sibling who can't be sporty due to a limitation, and a sibling who is sporty, is something like for stories. My mind instantly goes to the main character of goonies and his older brother
It looks like her primary feathers were clipped/plucked/didn’t grow in. She also seems to have elliptical wings, instead of the passive/active soaring wings most other pegasi have. I wonder if she was born with missing feathers or maybe her wings were damaged. The secondary feathers are clearly there, given the more solid shadows...
I like the idea that they are artificial, especially since if you look inside the wings. Some parts look as if they have feathers and some parts look as if they don't. Almost as if she might have had an accident or something when she was small, that made her unable to fly. Plus if she did have an accident and her sister was around at the time. They could also be another reason why her sister is protective over her. She doesn't want to see anything else bad happen to her sister again.
Who knows? Maybe she had wings like her sister, got seriously injured and so her wings were healed using flower petals? Making them still solid for flying but more transparent? Or she one sister could be adopted? Hence the difference in wings?

A part of me feels upon closer look, Pips feathers aren't really cloudy looking, her feathers are just "more poofy" then her sister's. I remember seeing chickens at this open zoon once of various colorations and feather shapes, and noticed there are these fancier looking chickens that are white but their tail feathers are SUPER poofy, you can barely make out that they are in fact feathers, where as other chicken's tails were a lot more solid and rugged in shape. I suspect that Pipp's wings are just fluffier and not as well groomed or solid as Zipp's, probably due to the fact that Zipp being the more stoic of the two, is a lot more active in the air then her sister Pipp. Considering Pipp was on a cellphone just doddling away through apps, and Zipp was making what looked like a "hero's landing" after flying so much, tells me that Zipp is defiently a no nonsense busy pony where as Pipp doesn't likely have a care in the world. A sort of head in the clouds type of character, but harmless enough. So it would make sense for her wings to be kinda flowy and puffy free and not as well overly groomed, unlike Zipp who likely keeps her feathers sleak to enable her flying poltential. Theories though, all theories but that's mine ^^
if we wanted to toss out logic then this would make sense i own some of the fancier breeds and they can’t fly at least only for about a second or two which would change a lot of what we see from pipp she gets her flying magic back in the end and flys fine not saying it couldn’t be true but just a thought we already know logic is often ignored by the animators
I agree Doc, ever since i saw Pipp's wings in the new promo it made me think that her wings might end up becoming an important part of Pipp's development as a character, like maybe there will be moments in the G5 series where Pipp will have to learn how to get along without using her wings and what not.
I personally think it could be due to age. Baby bird wings have that similar look, and they develop proper feathers as they grow. It's possible that maybe her wings are growing slower than normal though... sorta like how the CMC got their Cutie Marks later than most fillies.
If we look at the stills of Pip with her wings out, we can see the odd shape they take under said clouds. So, we could be looking at a Scootaloo situation here in that she was born like this. Another sityation that comes to mind is that her wings were made like this, likely through an injury. This could be Zip's fault, through negligence or showing some hesitation that she'd see as weakness. So, she molds herself into a protector of her sister and becomes aloof both out of guilt and not wanting to be in that same positiin again. Could be interesting to see a kid's show tackle debilitating injuries and the various aftereffects that follow.
Her wings are shaped roundish like a rose petal, but if u look close enough, you'll realize that she's missing feathers so maybe she got into an accident and they had to patch her wings with clouds to fill the missing feathers so she could continue to fly
Maybe alot of pegasi has different kinds of wings shape. Kinda like as humans, we have different types of body shape. Maybe its a representation of that we have different features, not everyone has to be the same. Also Pipp and Zipp's wings represent their personalities very well. We can see with Zipp's wings that she flies alot and flies faster, and for Pipp, maybe she doesn't fly alot, thats why she has softer looking wings. Zipp is kinda like Rainbow Dash while Pipp is kinda like Fluttershy. This is what i think^^
I think you’re mistaken comparing her to Fluttershy, I expect she is actually the one that interacts more with their subjects. I picture her as being active on social media and outwardly bouncy and friendly. I think Zipp is more introverted, preferring to work on her skills alone. Zipp is like a combination of dash and Fluttershy. Big ego but mostly just wants to be left alone. Pipp is a little more like pinkie pie, maybe with a dash of Rarity.

Maybe thats why Zipp's wings is more like angular or hard or steady looking?? And Pipp's is more soft, it kinda shows how often or not often they fly. Seems to me Zipp does flying exercises and Pipp is just sometimes on the ground sometimes in the air kinda way. They kinda have hard-soft personality, kinda like the representation of their wings.
I also wonder if they will affect flight. A larger wing span increases lift which makes you able to hover more easily, fly higher, fly further and carry more weight. A shorter wing span allows for faster acceleration, a higher top speed and better agility.
Keep in mind mind we haven't seen other unicorns yet. We don't know if all their horns are different from their coat or not. Also note that the hooves are a different color, so we can't outright say for sure that horns can't be a different color too.
My first thought when I first saw her wings was that maybe it was like the feathers on baby birds, how they’re all fluffy and soft and then as they get older they lose the soft fluffy feathers. My theory is that it’s the same with Pipp. I think that maybe she’s still young and hasn’t yet grown out of her soft fluffy feathers.
That’s what I originally thought too. But in the movie when they were interviewing that young filly after it was found out that pipp couldn’t fly, that filly was visibly smaller and younger than pipp and her wings are the normal sleek feathered ones

I like the idea of giving them more diversity in wing structure. Making it so the ponies dont look the same. Her wings are short and round. Zip has long slender wings. Some nice model diversity, just like real people.
Oh, I was definitely struck by the difference in wing-structure between Pipp and Zipp. Their wings don't even look like they belong to the same kind of Pony. It would make more sense if there was something unique about Pipp's wings.
Hmm....looking closely at the "cloudy" part of Pipp's wing, you can see some feathers in there, but there's a large gap in said feathers. Almost looks like an extreme case of clipped wings. Considering this, I still think that the _overall_ shape differences between Pipp and Zipp's wings are mostly down to simple character individuality, BUT on top of that Pipp also has some sort of issue with her feathers that the "cloud" is fixing--be it a temporary case of feathers being pulled out (but will grow back), a permanent scar where she once got an injury that _won't_ allow the natural feathers to grow back, or perhaps she was just born with a condition that affects feather growth or something. Certainly interesting to consider...
I know this probably isn’t gonna happen but if she does something like bite, pick or fidget with her wings would mean a lot to me personally. Or maybe young pegasi have down feathers! That’d be so cute
i always thought, if scotaloo did special strangth training for her wings, she could fly similarly like bulk byseps. since his wings are close to the same size as her's, but he can still fly.
I'd say maybe less like clouds and more like the soft fluffy down of a baby birds' wings. It could affect her flying, but she was flying *just fine* when her and her sister got the magic back in their wings. I think they wanted her to look more angelic in appearance as it adds to her preppy idol look and soft/smooth singing voice.
I just noticed: Look closely at Pipp's wings in the animation! You can notice, that her left wing (the one closer to us) seems to have a large chunk of it missing, and her other wing looks fine! It could be, that the puffiness of the wings is used to compensate for the lack of feathers, so she can fly. There's also the fact, that her wings are a lot smaller than Zipp's! Could it be she has the same wing condition as Scootaloo?

I might have a theory about her wings, this is just something I thought off the top of my head. Maybe Pipp's wings are underdeveloped because her feathers still fluffy and Zipp's wings are fully developed explaining why their feathers look different from each other.
If you look closely at her wings, seeing them through the light, her wings seems to be clipped! Which means she cannot fly- well unless the feathers grow back but i dunno if thats how pegasus wings work so uh. Anyways, I think the reason she has clouds on her wings is to help her fly since she is disabled. I think it’s quite creative and also gives more use for clouds in this universe
I just read a fan fiction showing that Pipp was born with a deformity, her mom & Zipp's wings are all sleek, sharp & thick. Pipp is soft & fluffy and her feathers have light passing through. Once the rainbow magic faded out, she might have trouble flying as a result of her soft wing feathers. Haven did try to get doctors to solve her daughter's wings, but unable to.
That's a cool idea! Whether it's true or not, I find myself more excited by G5 the more I think about it! There are so many cool ideas to explore here!
I think it has something to do with their age difference, their mother said to zipp, "you will get to wear this crown one day. " or something like that, zipp is pipp's older sister. so it would make sense that pipp's wings look different from her mother's or sister's. adding to that, most birds have fluffier wings (like pipp) when they are just learning to fly. this would make sense because pipp is the younger sister, but because the royal family was using wires to fake it, pipp could "fly" with out having to actual learn how to. but I like your idea too, that would make sense as well.
I was thinking it's might be because she's younger than Zipp that's my theory or the animator's want to make every Pegasus have different wings or even she's adopted because their last names aren't the same or the parents have different wings and that could be the reason but I'm just guessing
To me,especially after watching the movies and with my weirdly intimate knowledge of Birds(specifically pigeons),it would seem that her wings are more like....down feathers,softer,fluffier feathers that are kind of translucent and usually *never* used to fly,you see them a lot on baby birds. I believe that Pipp *does* have down feathers,not feathers fully capable of flight and gliding,much like the feathers her older sister Zipp has(which is why Zipp seems to be able to ‘fake fly’ doing some kind of highly trained parkour with her wings),because magic is a factor once it is returned to all creatures,though,Pipp can still fly,even with down feathers. Maybe not as well or was fast,but she can still fly because of the magic that was returned to her. It may be some genetic mutation caused perhaps by a lack of magic to help her properly develop,that caused her to keep the down feathers instead of look them as she gets older. Just a thought,though
In that clip of her flying while using her phone, you can kind of almost see a outline of what I think would be her natural wings under whatever material the artificial or prosthetic wings are made of. And they do indeed look rather stunted and most likely too small for her to fly naturally. But then again in other shots they look almost downy, like the feathers of a very young bird. Perhaps we're going to see in more detail what it looks like when a pegasus is coming of age and their wings grow to match their body size, including growing out bigger feathers? Maybe Pipp is much younger than Zip. Although it'd be hard to tell since they look to be about the same age and size.
I feel like it will be really cool if Pip Petals was disabled in someway in her wings. Since Pip is royalty it would be important for her to measure up to her sister. I think it would be a cool way of having a disabled character without making it a real life disability.
Equestria has lots it’s magic in G5, but there was something in the G4 series when that happened (Cozy Glow tried to drain it), and I believe the pegasi lost the ability to fly. Maybe they put clouds in their wings because clouds may not need magic to float?
if you look into the wings the tips look more transparent then the base maybe their like the wing socks you see in rainbow road trip but their more so of clouds to finish off the feathers to allow her flight
Under her fluffy "wings" you can sorta see oddly shaped wings which she may have damaged as a filly, which explains why Zipp is kinda overprotective of her. Her song Glowin Up kinda hints at her wings being different if you listen to the lyrics closely. I like the idea a lot.
Yeah if you look at her wings you can actually see the difference between the feathers, not to mention the fact that the bone connected to the wings looks relatively small.
With the gif at 2:58 and how the light passes through it, to me it looks like she has the lower part of her wing but not the higher part. I think she's had some sort of injury, and the cloud has been fastened to her wing in some way as a prosthetic. If im right I think that'd be really neat in terms of storytelling and character development!
It could just be design choice. Pipp seems kind of fluffy in both personality and appearance. Her wings could be a reflection of that. The other pony (forgot their name) seems very streamlined and to the point. The other pony also seem super athletic and to the point
Maybe Pipp is young enough that her adult feathers haven't grown in yet so her feathers are still downy. That is something that g4 animation would have had a hard time showing.
Scootalo's story was already a pretty big disability metaphor, so having a main character with medical help would actually be a great stop further for that
I would say my current favorite theories that they are prosthetics, that she is the first pegasus in a long time that has an actual connection to the cloud; thus ensuring she will be the pony to help reestablish a bridge of some sort to places like Cloudsdale, or that she is in a sense the G5 equivalent of flutter ponies and thus has a different ability from her older sister.
I think Pipp might be a genius inventor. She’s the only one who has a cell phone so she can be the one who made that cell phone. She might have made those wings for herself. Maybe she was born with very weak wings and mage wings for herself to be more of a Pegasus. We don’t know if her cloud wings are fragile or not maybe it’s the opposite her wings might be very strong but she might’ve made them look like clouds so that they look cuter she looks cute herself so it can be a possibility. Or maybe her wings are very strong but she herself doesn’t like to use them or show them of much so maybe that’s why made them look like clouds. And if she’s a genius inventor and a Princess or from Royalty trying to live up to the Royal Status, we don’t know about Zipp and Pipp’s parents so they can very Royal and care so much about their “Perfect Reputation” “Perfect Reputation” like caring so much about how their kids behave in front of others trying to make them “Fancy Princesses” like Princesses that never argue Princesses that are very fancy, having very fancy tea parties etc. but in reality Zipp and Pipp have different dreams and different ideas to live their life for Pipp that might be being an inventor and for Pipp that might be being a Night, a Fighter, a Defender of their kingdom, of The Pegasus Kind. And if Zipp and Pipp have different dreams than what their parents imagined they might keep their hobbies, abilities and for Pipp inventions a secret. And when Zipp and Pipp’s parents sooner or later find out they might try to accept their kids or punish them for not being “Perfect Princesses” Overall I think that Zipp and Pipp have A LOT of potential
It could be flight development. Pip seems to just hover and don't do any heavy high-speed flight. In birds, different shaped wings are developed for different styles of flight. The wings of a peregrine falcon are a different shape from a crane's. It could be age-related as well and pip still has some chick-down feathers.
Honestly, I like the Idea of Pipp's wings being some sort of Artofishal(can't Spell) cloud wings. Because there are kids out there who have false limbs, Pipp having the same issuses makes a Relatble Chatcer and Role Model for anyone who has simular problams. Personly though, I think Pipp has/had some sort of Sickness or Birth Defect that caused her to lose/born with out her flight feathers. Because If you look closely you can kinda see Pipp's wing bones hidden in the clouds.
If you look at the picture that has Izzy and Sunny next to two guards while,Izzy has a ball on her horn, you can see that one of the guards’ wings are like Pipp’s.
I personally think that Pipp’s wings are like that because she is a younger Pegasus. If you look at some baby birds you’ll notice that they have baby fuzz for feathers,and when the birds molt they have much more solid looking feathers. So I’m thinking that it’s the same with Pegasi, she might just have yet to molt into her adult feathers.
i have a slightly dark theme to do with maybe why having the artificial wings. maybe in childhood, something happened that meant that pipp was somehow involved with one of the other races of ponies, and during this maybe got injured and had to have some of the wing replaced, or maybe they were clipped or something and when rescued, the other pegasi decided due to the relation to royalty that they had to help fix the wings, it would give room for a look at differing themes and issues that we face both with animals in the real world and with humans, i know that due to the darkness of this theory that it is excessively unlikely but its a journey that could be used to give a lot of character development with trust issues, personal growth and even a look at maybe someone else who was in the same predicament who was not helped like pipp was which may lead them to despise others and form a group going against all of the races, which could lead to a situation where all three races have to rely on each other to get through (like the past that was shown in g4)
Well in my opinion is every character has their own unique looks and even though I do raise a lot of birds in my life some species of birds have fluffy wings and other species of birds have just regular wings but also it could be Age as well pip is younger then zip.
In the animation, it *does* kinda look like she has small wings that are encased in something sheer and fluffy, but like others have said, it could just be a nothingburger.
Due to discussing something else pony related with a friend (specifically said friend's head canon about bat ponies), we got on the topic of how the pony races got to the point of Sunny and co's generation being so isolated they haven't seen anything other than their own kind and from this sprung a theory. Despite being raised among the Pegasi, Pipp ISN'T a Pegasus; instead she's either A) an EXTREME throwback who was born an Earth Pony or B) an orphan Earth Pony who was found by the ponies who raised her. In either case, instead of discarding her like they were "supposed to", the couple were too attached to/smitten with (depending on which option was used) her to do so and instead pretended she was a Pegasus born without wings (which would be presented as a rare disorder that nevertheless is documented), getting her prosthetics to help sell the story. Of course, this might be a little too dark and/or problematic (since it could be read as invalidating the disabled, especially if done poorly) but if handled correctly, it could work and would be interesting since it could be used to explore the idea of being "handicapped/disabled" simply because everyone around you insists you are (similar to how the idea that people on the autism spectrum are considered naïve and gullible because many of them spend their lives being GASLIT by everyone around them; you know, stuff like "don't be ridiculous; there's nothing wrong with [food]" or "those lights don't bother anyone else; you're just being difficult" and anything else that invalidates their concerns and needs).
I think her wings may have been either deformed when born or she was in an accident because her wings look damaged if you look at them.. they are half missing so I assume the clouds were made part of her wings so she could fly again. :>
Maybe something happened to her when she was younger. Her right wing looks different from her left wing like her left wing is missing more parts than her right
while i don't think it'll happen (while the wings look softer they look to me like softer, bendier feathers, not cloads) i would love it if they did something like that. mlp has been great at disability representation, doing to so well and so casually that apparently a lot of people didn't even notice, and i really hope they'll continue with it. could also be a really interesting character ark. where Scootaloo learned to accept she was great just the way she was what you suggest for Pipp could create a story not just centred around a disability but also disability aids. the annoyance of requiring them every day of your life, the weaknesses they possess compared to the natural thing and how they make you stand out. g4 was great at having characters that had disability aids that people handled respectfully (aka not differently)(Stellar Eclipse in trade ya, kerfuffle in rainbow roadtrip), but if it's one of the main characters it can be given more focus, which could be great.
It's a very interesting thought, but I always thought that the writers are expanding their thoughts that each pegasus have different wings. I'm not sure, but I really like your theory about the artificial wings.
Here is my possible plot for the movie: Sunny and Izzy tries to bring back the magic of friendship to Equestria. Their journey take them to the Pegasi land, where Zipp (shown as the more aggresive one and royal guard material) capture these two and accuse them of trespassing. Then, Zipp bring Sunny and Izzy to her sister, Pipp. Then Pipp (shown as the softer and princess material) see the good intention of Sunny and Izzy and tell Zipp to release them. Pipp immediately befriend Sunny and Izzy, while Zipp still doesn't trust Sunny and Izzy. Zipp then come to a debate between she and Pipp about how they should treat Sunny and Izzy, whether as friends or foes. I can just keep going on about this plot, because, tbh, its a cliche at this point.
If that’s the case, then that would actually explain why she has an iPhone: it’s probably the device that would act as the remote to turning on her artificial wings, allowing her to fly. Either that or her phone just calls back to the reason why friendship and magic are basically dead and is unrelated to her wings. I’d be surprised if the former turned out to be true because you don’t get enough scenarios like that in fiction, period, and it’d be refreshing to see someone like that as part of the main cast of characters
In g4, the princesses had bigger wings than the Pegasus. However, if you look at the picture with Sunny, Izzy and the two guards, you can see that the guards have the same wings as Pipp. So the real question is, why is Zipp’s wings different to Pipp’s?
To me it looks more like down not fake wings. So like maybe she's just out of foal-hood where as her sister is older? Though prosthetic wings would be really cool and some cool diversity. If they were made of clouds, I feel like that wouldn't be possible without magic, but the movie could surprise me.
My thought was if you look at her wings at 3:03 the first part looks like normal wings but then looks more like clouds. My thought was maybe she got in an accident that tore her wings hence them looking a little like normal wings then experimental or alicorn magic allowed her to continue flying with a sort of cloud like substance instead of feathers. As in mlp Rareity gets wings however they were butterfly not feathered so maybe the same thing happened here
Perhaps it’s not a condition. Maybe the two of them are different species of Pegasi. Equestria is no stranger to variations on its core pony types (bat ponies, crystal ponies, eastern unicorns, and maybe even the Kirin are all examples of this). Maybe the long span of time between g4 and g5 lead to more pony variants. Perhaps the cloud like wings of Pip allow her to more effectively manipulate clouds and control the weather. I know some people might think that the weather manipulation of Pegasi is a magical ability and would therefore not exist in this new magic-less version of Equestria, but this is incorrect. The weather manipulation of Pegasi isn’t entirely considered a magical ability. In the season 8 finale of FIM, Rainbow Dash flies up and grabs a medium sized cloud to hang over the heads of the mane six as the journey to Tarderus. This is well after the established point were all unicorn magic had disappeared, so it must be an ability that isn’t entirely dependent on magic. Plus, the pony pulling the strings of that finale’s magic disappearance was Cozy Glow, who is a Pegasus herself. I highly doubt that the self absorbed Cozy Glow would have tried enacting a plan that would have hampered or impaired her own natural abilities, so it’s reasonable to assume that Pegasi weather control wouldn’t have disappeared as a result of her plan. I guess it’s also worth saying that Tirek’s draining ability seemed to do a lot more to his victims then simply take away their magic, but it is still said that the Pegasi would no longer be able to control the weather, so make of that what you will. Anyways, I am theorizing that these two sisters belong to two different Pegasi types. The ones with cloudy wings specialize in controlling the weather, and the ones with more typical looking wings specialize in being exceptional fliers and warriors (so basically the core aspects of the old Pegasus tribe from the ancient history of g4 split into two separate variants). As for the sisters themselves, perhaps they are not full sisters. Maybe both of them share one parent who is the ruler/leader of the Pegasi (like if they both share a queen mother) but the ruler had children with two different spouses and they ended up being half siblings (like if they both had different dads). Alternatively, maybe one of them was adopted into the royal family instead of being born into it. There are a lot of angles that one could take in writing a relationship like this. Also, can we talk about Zip for a second? I don’t know what it is about her, but I got the initial impression that she wasn’t too fond of her sister. Maybe this could explain why. Perhaps Zip looks down on Pip for being a part of the alternate and (in her mind) inferior type of Pegasi. Having the two sisters of the Pegasi royal family being of two differing species of Pegasi and not getting along as a result sounds incredibly interesting to me, and I would love to see something like this end up happening. However, I must admit that Dr. Wolf’s theory about the artificial wings also sounds pretty interesting and I would love to see a story like that too. At this point, I just really want to find out what the characters and new generation will actually be like. I can’t believe we still have to wait another five months before g5 comes out! SOMEBODY INVENT TIME TRAVEL ALREADY SO WE DON’T HAVE TO WAIT ANYMORE!
it's possible that as my little pony evolved, the wings changed throughout time. it's possible that they are artificial and I'm pretty sure there was already artificial stuff in G4 because in canterlot lots of unicorns had bigger horns than others.
Maybe the clouds in her wings help her float in place with little effort having to be put into flapping. The whole "clouds in the wings" thing feels kind of off though. Doesn't manipulation of weather/clouds count as magic in Equestria when there ISN'T supposed to be magic? Or maybe her wings are just a bit more fluffier cause she's royalty. Either way she's still cute.
Probably her wings didn't grow, like Scootaloo, but since they seem to have a better technology they are able to make the "unfinished" wings as long as a fully grown wings would be
I don't know if it's just me but if you look closely it looks like one of her wings is clipped in a way like something happened to her as a kid. I don't know if it's true or not but that's what it looks like to me.
What if Pipp just has different wings? What if her sister Zipp is more like what we know pegasi to be, strong and quick of wing, and Pipp is more of a 'graceful' flyer, slower but pinpoint control? As long as it seems to be since G4 maybe this type of wing grew from the supposed weak flyers of the past into what we see Pipp's wings to be now?
While iffy about this G5 but I like this as well and honestly I like to believe Pipp is either born with defect or my idea that some here have come up with, she was gravely injured and so they healed her so she can fly.
Thing about Pip, she's the younger twin. We also know, she's kind of their mom's favorite. I'm guessing she almost didn't survive the birth after Zipp was born, and these are a token of that. OR, her mom clips her wings, since she has a pretty strong hold on her as a helicopter parent? Or, Pip clipped her own wings as a "beauty" venture, to make them more fluffy and lovable for her fans. Not the first time I have heard about this theory. It's kinda interesting since that would mean unlike Scootaloo, Pipp has the luxury of being able to get new wings thanks to technological progress (even if that didn't stop Scoots from having a mostly comfortable adult life).

It looks like her primary feathers were clipped/plucked/didn’t grow in. She also seems to have elliptical wings, instead of the passive/active soaring wings most other pegasi have. I like the idea that they are artificial, especially since if you look inside the wings. Some parts look as if they have feathers and some parts look as if they don't. Almost as if she might have had an accident or something when she was small, that made her unable to fly.
Plus if she did have an accident and her sister was around at the time. They could also be another reason why her sister is protective over her. She doesn't want to see anything else bad happen to her sister again.
Who knows? Maybe she had wings like her sister, got seriously injured and so her wings were healed using flower petals? Making them still solid for flying but more transparent? Or she one sister could be adopted? Hence the difference in wings?

A part of me feels upon closer look, Pips feathers aren't really cloudy looking, her feathers are just "more poofy" then her sister's. I remember seeing chickens at this open zoon once of various colorations and feather shapes, and noticed there are these fancier looking chickens that are white but their tail feathers are SUPER poofy, you can barely make out that they are in fact feathers, where as other chicken's tails were a lot more solid and rugged in shape. I suspect that Pipp's wings are just fluffier and not as well groomed or solid as Zipp's, probably due to the fact that Zipp being the more stoic of the two, is a lot more active in the air then her sister Pipp. Considering Pipp was on a cellphone just doddling away through apps, and Zipp was making what looked like a "hero's landing" after flying so much, tells me that Zipp is defiently a no nonsense busy pony where as Pipp doesn't likely have a care in the world. A sort of head in the clouds type of character, but harmless enough. So it would make sense for her wings to be kinda flowy and puffy free and not as well overly groomed, unlike Zipp who likely keeps her feathers sleak to enable her flying poltential. Theories though, all theories but that's mine ^^

if we wanted to toss out logic then this would make sense i own some of the fancier breeds and they can’t fly at least only for about a second or two which would change a lot of what we see from pipp she gets her flying magic back in the end and flys fine not saying it couldn’t be true but just a thought we already know logic is often ignored by the animators

I personally think it could be due to age. Baby bird wings have that similar look, and they develop proper feathers as they grow. It's possible that maybe her wings are growing slower than normal though... sorta like how the CMC got their Cutie Marks later than most fillies.

If we look at the stills of Pip with her wings out, we can see the odd shape they take under said clouds. So, we could be looking at a Scootaloo situation here in that she was born like this. Another sityation that comes to mind is that her wings were made like this, likely through an injury. This could be Zip's fault, through negligence or showing some hesitation that she'd see as weakness. So, she molds herself into a protector of her sister and becomes aloof both out of guilt and not wanting to be in that same positiin again.
Could be interesting to see a kid's show tackle debilitating injuries and the various aftereffects that follow.

Maybe alot of pegasi has different kinds of wings shape. Kinda like as humans, we have different types of body shape. Maybe its a representation of that we have different features, not everyone has to be the same. Also Pipp and Zipp's wings represent their personalities very well. We can see with Zipp's wings that she flies alot and flies faster, and for Pipp, maybe she doesn't fly alot, thats why she has softer looking wings. Zipp is kinda like Rainbow Dash while Pipp is kinda like Fluttershy.

I think you’re mistaken comparing her to Fluttershy, I expect she is actually the one that interacts more with their subjects. I picture her as being active on social media and outwardly bouncy and friendly. I think Zipp is more introverted, preferring to work on her skills alone. Zipp is like a combination of dash and Fluttershy. Big ego but mostly just wants to be left alone. Pipp is a little more like pinkie pie, maybe with a dash of Rarity.

I also wonder if they will affect flight. A larger wing span increases lift which makes you able to hover more easily, fly higher, fly further and carry more weight. A shorter wing span allows for faster acceleration, a higher top speed and better agility.

Also note that the hooves are a different color, so we can't outright say for sure that horns can't be a different color too.
I am pretty sure that the horn was just for a scene in which Izzy disguises the group to let them into the unicorn kingdom undetected.
My first thought when I first saw her wings was that maybe it was like the feathers on baby birds, how they’re all fluffy and soft and then as they get older they lose the soft fluffy feathers. My theory is that it’s the same with Pipp. I think that maybe she’s still young and hasn’t yet grown out of her soft fluffy feathers.

I like the idea of giving them more diversity in wing structure. Making it so the ponies dont look the same. Her wings are short and round. Zip has long slender wings. Some nice model diversity, just like real people.
Oh, I was definitely struck by the difference in wing-structure between Pipp and Zipp. Their wings don't even look like they belong to the same kind of Pony. It would make more sense if there was something unique about Pipp's wings.
Hmm....looking closely at the "cloudy" part of Pipp's wing, you can see some feathers in there, but there's a large gap in said feathers. Almost looks like an extreme case of clipped wings.
Considering this, I still think that the _overall_ shape differences between Pipp and Zipp's wings are mostly down to simple character individuality, BUT on top of that Pipp also has some sort of issue with her feathers that the "cloud" is fixing--be it a temporary case of feathers being pulled out (but will grow back), a permanent scar where she once got an injury that _won't_ allow the natural feathers to grow back, or perhaps she was just born with a condition that affects feather growth or something. Certainly interesting to consider...
I know this probably isn’t gonna happen but if she does something like bite, pick or fidget with her wings would mean a lot to me personally.

I'd say maybe less like clouds and more like the soft fluffy down of a baby birds' wings. It could affect her flying, but she was flying *just fine* when her and her sister got the magic back in their wings.
I think they wanted her to look more angelic in appearance as it adds to her preppy idol look and soft/smooth singing voice.
I just noticed: Look closely at Pipp's wings in the animation! You can notice, that her left wing (the one closer to us) seems to have a large chunk of it missing, and her other wing looks fine!
It could be, that the puffiness of the wings is used to compensate for the lack of feathers, so she can fly. There's also the fact, that her wings are a lot smaller than Zipp's! Could it be she has the same wing condition as Scootaloo?

I might have a theory about her wings, this is just something I thought off the top of my head. Maybe Pipp's wings are underdeveloped because her feathers still fluffy and Zipp's wings are fully developed explaining why their feathers look different from each other.

If you look closely at her wings, seeing them through the light, her wings seems to be clipped! Which means she cannot fly- well unless the feathers grow back but i dunno if thats how pegasus wings work so uh.
Anyways, I think the reason she has clouds on her wings is to help her fly since she is disabled.

I just read a fan fiction showing that Pipp was born with a deformity, her mom & Zipp's wings are all sleek, sharp & thick. Pipp is soft & fluffy and her feathers have light passing through. Once the rainbow magic faded out, she might have trouble flying as a result of her soft wing feathers. Haven did try to get doctors to solve her daughter's wings, but unable to.

I think it has something to do with their age difference, their mother said to zipp, "you will get to wear this crown one day. " or something like that, zipp is pipp's older sister. so it would make sense that pipp's wings look different from her mother's or sister's. adding to that, most birds have fluffier wings (like pipp) when they are just learning to fly. this would make sense because pipp is the younger sister, but because the royal family was using wires to fake it, pipp could "fly" with out having to actual learn how to. but I like your idea too, that would make sense as well.
I was thinking it's might be because she's younger than Zipp that's my theory or the animator's want to make every Pegasus have different wings or even she's adopted because their last names aren't the same or the parents have different wings and that could be the reason but I'm just guessing

To me,especially after watching the movies and with my weirdly intimate knowledge of Birds(specifically pigeons),it would seem that her wings are more like....down feathers,softer,fluffier feathers that are kind of translucent and usually *never* used to fly,you see them a lot on baby birds.
I believe that Pipp *does* have down feathers,not feathers fully capable of flight and gliding,much like the feathers her older sister Zipp has(which is why Zipp seems to be able to ‘fake fly’ doing some kind of highly trained parkour with her wings),because magic is a factor once it is returned to all creatures,though,Pipp can still fly,even with down feathers. Maybe not as well or was fast,but she can still fly because of the magic that was returned to her.
It may be some genetic mutation caused perhaps by a lack of magic to help her properly develop,that caused her to keep the down feathers instead of look them as she gets older. Just a thought,though

In that clip of her flying while using her phone, you can kind of almost see a outline of what I think would be her natural wings under whatever material the artificial or prosthetic wings are made of. And they do indeed look rather stunted and most likely too small for her to fly naturally. But then again in other shots they look almost downy, like the feathers of a very young bird. Perhaps we're going to see in more detail what it looks like when a pegasus is coming of age and their wings grow to match their body size, including growing out bigger feathers? Maybe Pipp is much younger than Zip. Although it'd be hard to tell since they look to be about the same age and size.
I feel like it will be really cool if Pip Petals was disabled in someway in her wings. Since Pip is royalty it would be important for her to measure up to her sister. I think it would be a cool way of having a disabled character without making it a real life disability.
Equestria has lots it’s magic in G5, but there was something in the G4 series when that happened (Cozy Glow tried to drain it), and I believe the pegasi lost the ability to fly. Maybe they put clouds in their wings because clouds may not need magic to float?

With the gif at 2:58 and how the light passes through it, to me it looks like she has the lower part of her wing but not the higher part. I think she's had some sort of injury, and the cloud has been fastened to her wing in some way as a prosthetic. If im right I think that'd be really neat in terms of storytelling and character development!
It could just be design choice. Pipp seems kind of fluffy in both personality and appearance. Her wings could be a reflection of that. The other pony (forgot their name) seems very streamlined and to the point. The other pony also seem super athletic and to the point

I would say my current favorite theories that they are prosthetics, that she is the first pegasus in a long time that has an actual connection to the cloud; thus ensuring she will be the pony to help reestablish a bridge of some sort to places like Cloudsdale, or that she is in a sense the G5 equivalent of flutter ponies and thus has a different ability from her older sister.
I think Pipp might be a genius inventor. She’s the only one who has a cell phone so she can be the one who made that cell phone. She might have made those wings for herself. Maybe she was born with very weak wings and mage wings for herself to be more of a Pegasus. We don’t know if her cloud wings are fragile or not maybe it’s the opposite her wings might be very strong but she might’ve made them look like clouds so that they look cuter she looks cute herself so it can be a possibility. Or maybe her wings are very strong but she herself doesn’t like to use them or show them of much so maybe that’s why made them look like clouds. And if she’s a genius inventor and a Princess or from Royalty trying to live up to the Royal Status, we don’t know about Zipp and Pipp’s parents so they can very Royal and care so much about their “Perfect Reputation” “Perfect Reputation” like caring so much about how their kids behave in front of others trying to make them “Fancy Princesses” like Princesses that never argue Princesses that are very fancy, having very fancy tea parties etc. but in reality Zipp and Pipp have different dreams and different ideas to live their life for Pipp that might be being an inventor and for Pipp that might be being a Night, a Fighter, a Defender of their kingdom, of The Pegasus Kind. And if Zipp and Pipp have different dreams than what their parents imagined they might keep their hobbies, abilities and for Pipp inventions a secret. And when Zipp and Pipp’s parents sooner or later find out they might try to accept their kids or punish them for not being “Perfect Princesses”
Overall I think that Zipp and Pipp have A LOT of potential

It could be flight development. Pip seems to just hover and don't do any heavy high-speed flight. In birds, different shaped wings are developed for different styles of flight. The wings of a peregrine falcon are a different shape from a crane's. It could be age-related as well and pip still has some chick-down feathers.
If they found a way to help every pegasus to fly that'd be pretty cool, her wings are cute either way though ^^
Honestly, I like the Idea of Pipp's wings being some sort of Artofishal(can't Spell) cloud wings. Because there are kids out there who have false limbs, Pipp having the same issuses makes a Relatble Chatcer and Role Model for anyone who has simular problams. Personly though, I think Pipp has/had some sort of Sickness or Birth Defect that caused her to lose/born with out her flight feathers. Because If you look closely you can kinda see Pipp's wing bones hidden in the clouds.
It's also possible she might have got her feathers clipped somehow. Or has some sort of anxiety that causes her to pull them out

I personally think that Pipp’s wings are like that because she is a younger Pegasus. If you look at some baby birds you’ll notice that they have baby fuzz for feathers,and when the birds molt they have much more solid looking feathers. So I’m thinking that it’s the same with Pegasi, she might just have yet to molt into her adult feathers.

i have a slightly dark theme to do with maybe why having the artificial wings. maybe in childhood, something happened that meant that pipp was somehow involved with one of the other races of ponies, and during this maybe got injured and had to have some of the wing replaced, or maybe they were clipped or something and when rescued, the other pegasi decided due to the relation to royalty that they had to help fix the wings, it would give room for a look at differing themes and issues that we face both with animals in the real world and with humans, i know that due to the darkness of this theory that it is excessively unlikely but its a journey that could be used to give a lot of character development with trust issues, personal growth and even a look at maybe someone else who was in the same predicament who was not helped like pipp was which may lead them to despise others and form a group going against all of the races, which could lead to a situation where all three races have to rely on each other to get through (like the past that was shown in g4)

Well in my opinion is every character has their own unique looks and even though I do raise a lot of birds in my life some species of birds have fluffy wings and other species of birds have just regular wings but also it could be Age as well pip is younger then zip.
In the animation, it *does* kinda look like she has small wings that are encased in something sheer and fluffy, but like others have said, it could just be a nothingburger.

Yeah..
Due to discussing something else pony related with a friend (specifically said friend's head canon about bat ponies), we got on the topic of how the pony races got to the point of Sunny and co's generation being so isolated they haven't seen anything other than their own kind and from this sprung a theory. Despite being raised among the Pegasi, Pipp ISN'T a Pegasus; instead she's either A) an EXTREME throwback who was born an Earth Pony or B) an orphan Earth Pony who was found by the ponies who raised her. In either case, instead of discarding her like they were "supposed to", the couple were too attached to/smitten with (depending on which option was used) her to do so and instead pretended she was a Pegasus born without wings (which would be presented as a rare disorder that nevertheless is documented), getting her prosthetics to help sell the story.
Of course, this might be a little too dark and/or problematic (since it could be read as invalidating the disabled, especially if done poorly) but if handled correctly, it could work and would be interesting since it could be used to explore the idea of being "handicapped/disabled" simply because everyone around you insists you are (similar to how the idea that people on the autism spectrum are considered naïve and gullible because many of them spend their lives being GASLIT by everyone around them; you know, stuff like "don't be ridiculous; there's nothing wrong with [food]" or "those lights don't bother anyone else; you're just being difficult" and anything else that invalidates their concerns and needs).
One thing people seem to forget is the absence of magic. So artificial wings become much more tricky in concept.

while i don't think it'll happen (while the wings look softer they look to me like softer, bendier feathers, not cloads) i would love it if they did something like that. mlp has been great at disability representation, doing to so well and so casually that apparently a lot of people didn't even notice, and i really hope they'll continue with it.
could also be a really interesting character ark. where Scootaloo learned to accept she was great just the way she was what you suggest for Pipp could create a story not just centred around a disability but also disability aids. the annoyance of requiring them every day of your life, the weaknesses they possess compared to the natural thing and how they make you stand out. g4 was great at having characters that had disability aids that people handled respectfully (aka not differently)(Stellar Eclipse in trade ya, kerfuffle in rainbow roadtrip), but if it's one of the main characters it can be given more focus, which could be great.
It's a very interesting thought, but I always thought that the writers are expanding their thoughts that each pegasus have different wings. I'm not sure, but I really like your theory about the artificial wings.
for my thought is she's slightly molted her feather and her adult feathers have not grown in yet
Here is my possible plot for the movie: Sunny and Izzy tries to bring back the magic of friendship to Equestria. Their journey take them to the Pegasi land, where Zipp (shown as the more aggresive one and royal guard material) capture these two and accuse them of trespassing. Then, Zipp bring Sunny and Izzy to her sister, Pipp. Then Pipp (shown as the softer and princess material) see the good intention of Sunny and Izzy and tell Zipp to release them. Pipp immediately befriend Sunny and Izzy, while Zipp still doesn't trust Sunny and Izzy. Zipp then come to a debate between she and Pipp about how they should treat Sunny and Izzy, whether as friends or foes.
I can just keep going on about this plot, because, tbh, its a cliche at this point.
Do you think the pegasi has the "Gem"? It said in the sypnosis that there is a gem heist. What do you think it does?
If that’s the case, then that would actually explain why she has an iPhone: it’s probably the device that would act as the remote to turning on her artificial wings, allowing her to fly. Either that or her phone just calls back to the reason why friendship and magic are basically dead and is unrelated to her wings.
I’d be surprised if the former turned out to be true because you don’t get enough scenarios like that in fiction, period, and it’d be refreshing to see someone like that as part of the main cast of characters
In g4, the princesses had bigger wings than the Pegasus. However, if you look at the picture with Sunny, Izzy and the two guards, you can see that the guards have the same wings as Pipp. So the real question is,
why is Zipp’s wings different to Pipp’s?
Cloud type wings, look at pipps hooves, they too look a bit fluffy
To me it looks more like down not fake wings. So like maybe she's just out of foal-hood where as her sister is older? Though prosthetic wings would be really cool and some cool diversity. If they were made of clouds, I feel like that wouldn't be possible without magic, but the movie could surprise me.
I like to think that when Pipp was born, her wings were weaker and smaller, and that’s why they look like that.
My thought was if you look at her wings at 3:03 the first part looks like normal wings but then looks more like clouds. My thought was maybe she got in an accident that tore her wings hence them looking a little like normal wings then experimental or alicorn magic allowed her to continue flying with a sort of cloud like substance instead of feathers. As in mlp Rareity gets wings however they were butterfly not feathered so maybe the same thing happened here
Perhaps it’s not a condition. Maybe the two of them are different species of Pegasi. Equestria is no stranger to variations on its core pony types (bat ponies, crystal ponies, eastern unicorns, and maybe even the Kirin are all examples of this). Maybe the long span of time between g4 and g5 lead to more pony variants. Perhaps the cloud like wings of Pip allow her to more effectively manipulate clouds and control the weather. I know some people might think that the weather manipulation of Pegasi is a magical ability and would therefore not exist in this new magic-less version of Equestria, but this is incorrect. The weather manipulation of Pegasi isn’t entirely considered a magical ability. In the season 8 finale of FIM, Rainbow Dash flies up and grabs a medium sized cloud to hang over the heads of the mane six as the journey to Tarderus. This is well after the established point were all unicorn magic had disappeared, so it must be an ability that isn’t entirely dependent on magic. Plus, the pony pulling the strings of that finale’s magic disappearance was Cozy Glow, who is a Pegasus herself. I highly doubt that the self absorbed Cozy Glow would have tried enacting a plan that would have hampered or impaired her own natural abilities, so it’s reasonable to assume that Pegasi weather control wouldn’t have disappeared as a result of her plan. I guess it’s also worth saying that Tirek’s draining ability seemed to do a lot more to his victims then simply take away their magic, but it is still said that the Pegasi would no longer be able to control the weather, so make of that what you will. Anyways, I am theorizing that these two sisters belong to two different Pegasi types. The ones with cloudy wings specialize in controlling the weather, and the ones with more typical looking wings specialize in being exceptional fliers and warriors (so basically the core aspects of the old Pegasus tribe from the ancient history of g4 split into two separate variants). As for the sisters themselves, perhaps they are not full sisters. Maybe both of them share one parent who is the ruler/leader of the Pegasi (like if they both share a queen mother) but the ruler had children with two different spouses and they ended up being half siblings (like if they both had different dads). Alternatively, maybe one of them was adopted into the royal family instead of being born into it. There are a lot of angles that one could take in writing a relationship like this. Also, can we talk about Zip for a second? I don’t know what it is about her, but I got the initial impression that she wasn’t too fond of her sister. Maybe this could explain why. Perhaps Zip looks down on Pip for being a part of the alternate and (in her mind) inferior type of Pegasi. Having the two sisters of the Pegasi royal family being of two differing species of Pegasi and not getting along as a result sounds incredibly interesting to me, and I would love to see something like this end up happening. However, I must admit that Dr. Wolf’s theory about the artificial wings also sounds pretty interesting and I would love to see a story like that too. At this point, I just really want to find out what the characters and new generation will actually be like. I can’t believe we still have to wait another five months before g5 comes out! SOMEBODY INVENT TIME TRAVEL ALREADY SO WE DON’T HAVE TO WAIT ANYMORE!

it's possible that as my little pony evolved, the wings changed throughout time. it's possible that they are artificial and I'm pretty sure there was already artificial stuff in G4 because in canterlot lots of unicorns had bigger horns than others.

Maybe the clouds in her wings help her float in place with little effort having to be put into flapping. The whole "clouds in the wings" thing feels kind of off though. Doesn't manipulation of weather/clouds count as magic in Equestria when there ISN'T supposed to be magic?
Or maybe her wings are just a bit more fluffier cause she's royalty. Either way she's still cute.
Probably her wings didn't grow, like Scootaloo, but since they seem to have a better technology they are able to make the "unfinished" wings as long as a fully grown wings would be

I don't know if it's just me but if you look closely it looks like one of her wings is clipped in a way like something happened to her as a kid. I don't know if it's true or not but that's what it looks like to me.
What if Pipp just has different wings? What if her sister Zipp is more like what we know pegasi to be, strong and quick of wing, and Pipp is more of a 'graceful' flyer, slower but pinpoint control? As long as it seems to be since G4 maybe this type of wing grew from the supposed weak flyers of the past into what we see Pipp's wings to be now?

Pip has translucent feathers that are back lit by the sun. They will look cloud like, but yeah, it's the lighting...
While iffy about this G5 but I like this as well and honestly I like to believe Pipp is either born with defect or my idea that some here have come up with, she was gravely injured and so they healed her so she can fly.
Thing about Pip, she's the younger twin. We also know, she's kind of their mom's favorite. I'm guessing she almost didn't survive the birth after Zipp was born, and these are a token of that. OR, her mom clips her wings, since she has a pretty strong hold on her as a helicopter parent? Or, Pip clipped her own wings as a "beauty" venture, to make them more fluffy and lovable for her fans. Like how some superstars starve themselves to fit into commercials and movies, this is her way of fitting into the throng, being plagued by major self doubt (as we heard in parts of her song).

The creators said it was the fit the feather boas of the 1920’s style she has.
Not the first time I have heard about this theory. It's kinda interesting since that would mean unlike Scootaloo, Pipp has the luxury of being able to get new wings thanks to technological progress (even if that didn't stop Scoots from having a mostly comfortable adult life).
Honestly, I rather like the semi-realistic soft look over the hard wings.
