Well for me, "gaming on the go", did mean trading Pokemon with random kids 5 to 7 years younger then myself in the DS era. But I have since learned that I can't do that anymore as I am now a creepy old man. 😣
So now, "Gaming on the go", means moving from a recliner (that is slightly too close to the TV to fully recline, but far enough away that i dont get eye strain.) all the way over 7 to 10 feet to my much more comfortable bed complete with a backrest and in the winter lots of blankets to stay warm. Still I have thought about getting one of those hospital TV cranes to be able to swivel my TV around to play Switch on the TV, while in bed... But with all the other bad and lazy things that come with that kind of life style choice, moving a few feet to my bed is the best option in the long run.

"Games he didn't want to play but did want to know that he could if he wanted to..."
As an owner of every major console and portable released since 2005 (1995 if you don't count the original Xbox and the Sega Saturn), I felt that.

Me too. But since you're compulsive, look up "MiSTer FPGA" and you could expand that collection to include cycle-accurate versions of every console up through 1995 as well. Imagine how many thousands more games you know you could play.... "if you wanted to". ;)

This is the condition of "Gamer Saturation". It doesn't matter if "New Games" are being made and released, they all fall into the same genres we've played for thousands of hours before, every game mechanic put into every "New Game" is the same mechanic we've played in old games. Sure, like Music there is "theoretically" an almost infinite number of combinations of notes that can be played, and likewise endless ideas that can be made into games, but we all know 99.999...% of those combinations are unappealing.

Then played about nothing and moved on to old games that you can't get on Steam anymore and then mod them (like Test Drive unlimited 1 and 2) and Gog games. Played that for a few minutes and then i finaly tried some indie games i never want to play on the big screen. Loving it :)

"Downloading 50GB of Elder Ring just to start it, look at it and then never play it"
Your boyfriend and I are living the same life.
I will say though - one of the unsung heroes of the Steam Deck is Valve's new big picture UI and the way that the controller mapping is now done. I've completely mapped a few games that had completely PC-centric controls like Battlebit Remastered and they play so well after you memorize the controls you have set up for it. Secondly, the layout of the Deck is absolutely perfect for PC games. I myself cannot wait for the day that Valve makes a Steam controller 2 so that I can use it on my desktop PC, especially if Steam OS 3 is ever released. The desktop version of Steam OS 3 will be a game changer for a lot of gamers who don't feel like dealing with Windows and all of the stupid telemetry garbage Microsoft pushes nowadays.
The biggest benefit of the Deck imho is that I can play anywhere in my house without being tied to my desk. It's a lifesaver and the only reason I've been able to really game at all while watching my child. Otherwise, there's no way I could game while watching him, since there's nothing in my office but an empty floor and crap he can get into.

People saying "they don't get out enough" to use handhelds?
Maybe y'all are doing it wrong?
With the portability I use mine at my G.f house (when I don't bring my PS5, & when it's left there for a few days I use the SteamDeck at home), other options can be at work (sometimes I have an hour down time), another option is visiting family when you know you'll be there for 1, 2 days and they don't have any entertainment, another option is doing errands that you'll need to wait for like mechanic, hospital visit, etc..
So it does have its uses, however one thing I never do is play games on my phone! I don't want to oversaturate my gaming appetite with junk food before the main course.

In terms of "library" my Switch is not far behind compared to the amount of games i own on Steam. Both platforms have great games and i simply don't have the time to play them all.
What i really love about my Switch is that i'm able to play fully detached from every other device i own in various ways. My preferred way of playing with my Switch is in a tablet holder with detached Joy Con (which is essentially the most comfortable way to play i have experienced in over 25 years of gaming).
Funny enough i don't use my Switch as a "classic" handheld at all and play docked very rarely.
Yes, the Switch is now over five years old and the Steam Deck is a much more recent product (in terms of tech) but i think the performance is fine more often than not and even games like Doom Eternal are fun to play on Switch.

Bought one kinda expecting your usecase (can I? yes would I? no...). But that device grew on me marvelously for one thing. I have little time to play and almost no time to like "sit for 4 hours and immerse myself in the game". This device has instant sleep/wakeup mode. Now it's possible to play big titles 10 minutes at a time from anywhere and when I actually get to my normal PC, I get to resume it.
Imagine being stuck on a boss in hollow knight and trying it again, and again... every time for just 2-3 tries in between other activities.
So yeah, for me, it created a bunch of time that I wouldn't be gaming before and I'm now, whilst still enjoying high quality games (currently playing dirt 2, one stage at a time).

      @davepraz153 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@KillSwitch80 it’s… “good” but not perfect, it’s actually pretty impractical. The main issues are:
      - Very limited storage (I got the 512 GB, and I’m using a 1 TB microsd card, and still… I just can install about 20 AAA games.
      - Bad battery life. It discharges very quickly even if you are not playing anything.
      - Gets pretty hot, even if you are not playing anything.
      - Too heavy. I can’t play for more than an hour before my arms gets tired.
      - No official dock yet.
      - I can’t comfortably play with someone else (local multiplayer).
I would revisit the Steam Deck once they releases the dock so I can hopefully add an external drive to it, and connect it to my TV. Until then, it found a place in a corner of my desk.
Right now, I ended up using my XBOX, GeForce Now, and my PC for AAA games, and my Nintendo Switch for everything else.
In summary, I would say that the Steam Deck is not a complete product yet. It’s cool, but it’s design flaws makes it unusable for the real life. It’s so expensive, heavy, fragile, and it’s battery life and storage are so short that many people would not use it on the go in a regular basis, and they will most likely use their console/PC rather than the Deck while they are at home.
I recommend you to wait for a new revision/redesign, or even for a new generation of it to get it.

My brother has a big beefy PC and got a steam deck, but like that, doesn't play it that much because his PC is in his bedroom. I ordered one after trying his because my 6 year old laptop's gaming graphics died, I miss gaming and it is on its last legs for any sort of functionality - it might make it to October when I'm due to receive the steam deck. I know I will be on mine incessantly because I will have nothing else to play games on. I am on a low income and saving so I'll be able to afford it. That is probably the best part about it, all the capabilities of a great PC but at a lower cost. I will be getting a steam dock as well when it releases.
