    I just went through and read the comments, I think part of the problem is our deck collecting is a social outlet, we see others get them and like them and want to have that connection with our youtube tarot friends...there are times when I watch a video and shuffle the deck I see on the video while watching...fun to have the deck someone on social media is working with and see what similar or dissimilar connections/readings/enjoyment - happen. So it's pretty social, and even though many of us are very hermit-like, we are after all...human. Also, some of it is the excitement of wanting, waiting, and getting...and has little to do with the having. So we see a deck, it looks pretty, want it because out "friend" has one, feel the excitement of it's coming in the mail! and then we unwrap, shuffle through it, and never touch it again. I am a collector of many things. My family thinks my collections are a bit unreasonable, but I like the things. For a while I sold some of them...but it's fun to learn about a thing, like say: vintage china. Then search for it, find it for cheap and acquire a full service for six. Now, I have many decks that I love, some that I use rarely, and I recently put mine all in a system of drawers that are behind cabinet doors (I think my landlord built it for vhs tapes) I am aggravated when I have to uncover and dig out the decks, but it doesn't make me want to get rid of them...I don't need to have everything cleared out...I want to have my things...like a dragon sitting on a mountain of treasure I guess...so I have just been a bit more discerning about what I adopt. I will say, there have been a few things I sold when I had my etsy shop going...that I wish I had back. They are pretty rare, and I don't see them around (very pricey vintage rhinestone jewelry) so that is how I proceed with the whole deck collecting thing. Maybe stay off social media for a month..see if it makes a difference. The decks you are getting rid of...don't seem that irreplaceable...love your bags.

      I didn't think about as being a social outlet, but I think you are so right! Focusing on a depth year has been helping me to be mindful about any new decks I'm bringing in. 🙂 Thank you for watching. ❤️

    I finally culled my first haul of 12 decks a month ago when I had 70+ Tarot decks. Now, I'm down to 40+ decks and still in the process of culling more!
    Once you start and develop an internal dialogue and find out the "why" you collect Tarot decks, it gets easier! I realized I've been yearning to become intimate again with learning Tarot, instead of looking for the next pretty deck. My mental focus had to shift as well as my heart and soul.
    For me, I have been very strict and picky with decks I buy from now on. For example, I want to buy decks that are VERY close to the Waite-Smith tradition, classic popular decks, and decks with art that are close to "Marvel/DC" comics. This is what brings me joy. Also, I must watch videos of these decks and spend a week discerning and meditating if I need the deck instead of pressing the "buy" button on the website as an impulse. I must NEED it, not just want it.
    When I realized this, it was so easy for me to cull away! I felt better knowing my decks were going to be rehomed. The stress of having too many vibeless decks went away, and I started to appreciate the decks that were left behind. The consumerism of Tarot decks is a very difficult "Devil card" to release the chains from...

      I have found the same and now culling just feels like a natural part of my practice every few months. Moving along some decks to make room for new experiences.

    Just to clarify... the Marie Kondo “does it spark joy” question is not about rationalizing if you “like it,” it’s about looking and holding the item and recognizing how your body and heart instantly react. If you grab your favorite deck of all time - it’s that instant “YES” feeling. If you practice her method than every deck you keep should have that- no hesitation, no in-your-head-rationalizing... Just that instant fizzy feeling of something you adore. The immediate smile it gives you, the leap of the heart in joy! Not the rationalizing mind of “oh this is really pretty and I meant to use it one day...” That kind of thinking is essentially a mental trap. Most of the things “I mean to use this one day” never end up getting used and Kondo talks more about that and how to approach sentimental items etc. I definitely recommended reading Kondo’s whole book if you haven’t. She explains it and the art (and relief) of decluttering much better than I.
    In the fall I took a bunch of decks to my local metaphysical shop and they assessed them for store credit. I was nervous about it because I did love many of them once and wanted them to have good homes ... well the next day I came in to pick up my store credit the lady told me every one of my decks had already found new homes! One buyer especially had fallen in love with an indie deck I had. Hearing these stories, I can’t tell you how happy this made me. Because otherwise they were just collecting dust with me. If you think of it with that perspective it really helps.
    Thanks for sharing your experience.

      Thank you for the information, I haven't actually read the book just seen videos and such about it. I will look into the book! Although I have no problem get rid of anything else in my home, just my decks. But like you, when I deck that I am not working with finds a new loving home, that does fill me with joy. Since this video I have sold, traded and gifted a few others and it's so nice to see them go on to be used and loved. 🙂 Thank you for sharing your insights and for watching! ❤️

      Boho Tarot yes I absolutely recommend the book because 1) it really did change my life for the better (though I’m not perfect at it and i def do make some allowances) 2) it’s very misrepresented online by people who haven’t read it. When I discovered Marie Kondo I loved her spark joy. It really dies help you choose your items. Get ne, I forgot her system. Oh yes, thus us what I need to do. If they ALL spark joy, I guess they'll stay. ❤😊👍But yes, I think it's about NOT using logic brained thinking, it's purely about your heart and emotion.

    Thank you for this. I’m looking at culling my collection too. My problem is the same: lack of space in my 900 sq.ft. house. I can only keep so many in my studio, and the rest are boxed up in the basement. I like the idea of asking the deck if it wants to stay or go, but I think I’ll use my pendulum instead of cards. There are only 3 possible answers, yes, no, or maybe.

    Oh girl, the struggle is REAL and the problem I've had is that I rehomed decks that I had back in the 90's and just ended up missing them for one reason or another and RE-acquired them. Just today I realized I really miss having The Wild Unknown in my Tarot collection - traded it last year. I think there are just some decks that shaped my practice and, even if I don't reach for them a lot, I just find that they're still a part of my journey and I treasure the role they have had to play and may play again. Most of the time, the decks I end up selling or trading are hard nopes for one reason or another. The in-betweens, as you said, are MUCH harder!!

    • @DawnMichelleTarot
      @DawnMichelleTarot  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally know how that goes! I've had the wild unknown for years, I've even made videos about how it's not for me, and then this year, it started working for me! There are some I'm still on the fence about, they are sitting in yet another box lol. 🙂 Thank you for watching. ❤️

    Ahh the paradox of choice... As a newcomer to tarot, I thought I only needed one deck but then I started buying a few different ones and realised they all contributed something different to my learning. However, there are some I knew just didn't work for me. I realised that I was more happy knowing they would go somewhere they could be used and loved in a way I couldn't. One of the things my grandma once told me about money but I think can be applied in this instance is this: the more you have, the more you should share or give so you don't get bloated and your good fortune may turn to stagnant energy. 2020 is the year you release all this good stuff into the universe! Good luck! You can do this!!

    • @DawnMichelleTarot

    This was interesting to hear about your struggles with "too many" decks. It took me a while to solve my issues with over 500 decks (i'm not a collector but a user). My solution was to separate each deck from their original boxes/packaging and put the decks into indexed larger boxes (poker card storage boxes work) with the LWB/book's stored separately too ... takes a lot less space but not so visually appealing. In brief, numbering them made them easier/faster to access ... if only to "stare at" and/or to use. Of course, the obvious bit is that more than one deck is not necessary but a blessing i am grateful to have after many many years with just a RWS(yellow box). Not ready for the "culling" yet.🤔 Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Enjoy!☮️

    I think its important to have high standards for decks, especially my oracle decks. At this point in my journey, I am very critical of a deck before I decide to keep it. I have to love all the artwork AND the guidebook. I used to keep it if its just"ok," but with so many decks available, I want the ENTIRE product I am purchasing to be top quality, art, card stock, guidebook, energy, etc. I am also very careful as what I watch on YT. Watching too many videos contribute to consumerism over quality. At least for me.

    Oh my gosh, I was laughing and smiling and nodding and agreeing with you! My solution was to put the ones I definitely don't want to keep in an easy access box and only put a few up for sale/swap at a time. I give myself time and permission to visit the others in the box and allow myself to change my mind. If I'm ambivalent about a deck, it stays. I keep a few popular decks on hand for swapping if a deck comes up on the trading sites that I want.

    I can relate with this issue I'm not a collector but the way I was accumulating decks it seemed like I was collecting. That's when I just put the brakes on buying and started to go through all the decks, which ones are the ones I gravitate to which ones I use for readings and which ones I have a strong emotional connection with then the decks that didn't make those lists I said bye to and did it quickly. How I see it is that it's not fair to that deck not to be used and now someone is using and loving it and maybe where its truly meant to be. Also, I was running out of room to and I refuse to buy a cabinet to "collect" more decks. Thanks for sharing "The Struggle" yes it's real ;)

I am already starting to consider buying intentionally as my problem is feeling like I do not have enough time to dedicate to learning each deck intimately if I just keep buying. I decided to write down the top 5 decks that I want to purchase for the year and will try my best to stick to that! LOL!! Tarot is a very personal practice and I can totally resonate with the feeling of each deck representing a piece of your soul - I feel the same way about mine. Thanks for sharing your journey xxx

    Loved this video and have felt that struggle. I keep a list of what I have and look at it periodically thinking all the while, "Is there a deck I don't want anymore/need/can gift away?" And for some reason or other, I want to keep them all. LOL I have gifted away 4 decks to people who didn't have any, so I feel good about that little bit lol
    I have about 120 decks since I started my journey in early 2017. More Oracle than Tarot by about 10 decks. I try and resist the urge to buy, and instead choose to get to know the decks better that I already have. For some reason, I know the decks that I'm not connecting with now, will make their connection later when I need them, so that's my rational for not getting rid of ones I'm currently not using lol ;-) Thanks for sharing your thoughts/struggles and it was nice to "see" you! From the comments I can see this was very relatable!! 😅I think as some mentioned we all struggle with wanting to belong and have the new deck but also have fun and not drown in our stuff. Everyone needs their own balance. I liked how you showed it’s not always an easy process. Right now I am finding it very hard to get lower that 70, which for some is low and for others is way high! I have been reading tarot for most of my life (grew up in a family of readers) and I think I didn't own more than 20 decks at any given point. And listening to your struggle really makes me feel grateful for my lack of connection to most of them. I usually dislike the art, because I find it tacky a lot of the time and then I don't want to look at them or I simply feel no connection to them. So I will buy decks but then I'll give them away after a while and I only keep the ones I use. And out of the 18 that I have at the moment, I think I could leave them all behind and maybe hold on to just 3 - Aquarian, CBD Marseille and Pagan Otherworlds. All others can go, I wouldn't feel like I'm loosing anything essential.

      I'm slowly down a ton as well, for a variety of reasons, but the big one is passing on decks I just don't connect with (no matter how cool they are!) 🙂 Thank you for watching. ❤️

    I really enjoyed this video! It’s such a good video to show your vulnerability and the problem” of having too many decks. I am another person who owns over 200 Decks and I go through this fat pattern all the time so I can really relate to this video. My problem is storage also and not having a place where they are conveniently available is one reason I am not using a lot of the decks I have. So I’m always watching deck storage videos to see if I can find anything that can help but I feel sometimes terribly burdened which is a weird way of describing how I feel, by having all these decks. Just the thought of sorting them out and putting them up for sale sounds daunting to me and more than I can really handle. The truth is, like you these are my friends, Counselors, and sometimes feel like family members So it is impossible to part with them because they all have a different reason and a different time to be in my life. Thank you for your videos I enjoy them so much And even if you don’t think so, you have a great way of being on camera yourself.

      Thank you so much, I am so glad that you enjoyed the video. I've realized that part of it is that I love exploring decks, so I'm always getting new ones to experience. It doesn't mean they always work out for me, but I love the adventure of discovering and getting to know a new deck. A few friends of mine have a rule: one deck in means one deck out, I might try that so I can still experience different decks but keep my collection manageable for me. 🙂 Thank you for watching. ❤️

    love this vid...sophie's choice....I have had over 400 decks at one time and I felt a sense of anxiety about having so many....so much money spent and space needed to house..I have the same personality about if I don't use it I have no problem to get rid of things..then I moved and had a limited space designated for decks and I just went through them with an" I love or don't mentality"...the don'ts went into a box ...there were some that I was unsure and I opened them up and shuffle through and went with a feeling that I got from them ......i actually found it easy to do. I now have 138 decks and I LOVE....LOVE them all and have probably wished I only kept maybe one or two. I feel so much better now.

      I also found that when I decide they were no longer of interest to me the quicker I was able to move it on the easier it was to live with my decision.....I found if they hung around it was to easy to change my mind only to decide a month later that I really did not want it

      @DawnMichelleTarot  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe that's part of my problem, letting them hang around too long! I feel pretty good about the ones I'm letting go of now, but I suspect there are a few more that will be find new homes eventually. 🙂 Thank you for watching. ❤️

    Your house is on fire 🔥 You’ve only had enough time to wake up your husband, grab the kids, and any pets... which box would you grab?
    Donate the rest, give them for free to your fans, or open an online bidding/sale.
    Keep what means the MOST. Everything means something, some more than others, but make a commitment to what means the MOST and let go what is weighing you down.

    New Subber here... appreciate this topic. I actually just donated eight decks to Jen at Mama Squirrel's charity auction. It was easier than I thought, and made me happy to see others enjoy them for a good cause. My collection is less than 25 (but I have a couple on pre order). It is as if the flood of tarot deck choices gave us all a choice of over eating at a banquet. We are gluttonous feasters with a rabid appetite, but the servings keep coming, and coming... Perhaps a lot of is is FOMO for us. The other day I did a 'test drive' of my decks and found even more I felt I could pass on to others. I have a couple that I got just for the art work I adored, and made a collage of my favorite cards in a shadow box for the wall just to display them. Now, a 200 size is different. You are very brave ;)

      Ooh donating them for charity, that's a fantastic idea! I'll have to look into that. I think there are probably more that will end up being rehomed as I still have some I haven't worked with yet, but I feel better about this new direction. 🙂 Thank you for watching and for subscribing to my channel. ❤️

    Fascinating to hear about your process! I like doing "exit interviews" with my decks but one of the questions is about whether the deck has a strong feeling about staying or going and I don't find that super useful either. They rarely actually give me much there. I have ~100 decks and I've been packing for a move where I only get what I can carry in suitcases and boy, there's a lot of stuff I'm giving up in favor of tarot :-P When *buying* decks, I do find it helpful to look at my wishlist spreadsheet and be like "self, there are 300 decks here, you don't WANT 300 decks, so if you have to limit yourself, what's staying?" The grouping in baskets is also interesting. I don't do season-specific decks, but I do find myself spending more time with certain decks for a month or so, so I'm inspired in my new place to consider something like a "right now shelf" or table where I can rotate out decks every month and take a look at my big tarot shelves (definitely gonna be buying a bookcase for tarot since I need all new furniture anyway...) to see what's calling me.

    • @DawnMichelleTarot
      @DawnMichelleTarot  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a kind of "right now" shelf too. It has two baskets, one with my go-to favorites (like my Llewellyn) and the other is the decks I'm working with for the month. 🙂 Thank you for watching and sharing your process! ❤️

    I have about 150 decks....im sort of facing the same problem....I have a very small room...I got rid of the original large boxes which helped...but....but....still too many...but unless I move again the only ones im willing to get rid of is the ones I really really definitely don't like...otherwise I will cram them in somewhere.. lol....we're all addicts..!

    • @DawnMichelleTarot
      @DawnMichelleTarot  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that's something we all struggle with (not just in Tarot, but in life.) I personally think of decks like books, there are some that I get and work with for a while and then move on, there are some that I try that don't work out for me and then there are those that become treasured parts of my practice. There's a natural flow to my practice and my decks reflect and support that. We each just have to find what that looks like for us and where we are comfortable with it. I hope that helps! 🙂 Thank you for watching! ❤️

    My collection is MUCH smaller but I related hard with your video. I read in a style book once the idea of taking all your clothes in your closet and facing the hanger in the same direction on the closet rack. When you use a certain piece of clothing to switch the direction the hanger faces. That way, after a while, you can visually see which pieces of clothing still call to you and you still regularly use. Is there a way to do something similar with tarot decks? 🤔 maybe putting a piece of ribbon that sticks out of the tarot pouch you make as a way of flagging that's it been used? Then, after about a year, you can see which decks you actively used even seasonally. Just a thought. Good luck!

    It is interesting to hear your process. It does sound as if you want to reduce your collection at all costs but at the same time you are not really ready to do so, maybe this is also why it takes so long. My collection is not very big, just about 100 decks. I usually get emotionally attached only to some decks, others I let go of without thinking too much. But I really do go with the flow. If I decide to let go of decks but then sense resistance, I change direction since I know it's not the right time. I usually go through my Sheet and mark them as well as put price tag on the side. Shortly after I put them online for sale. I had last year a small rule for financial reasons that if I want a new deck, an old one must go. :)
    The Wayhome tarot has two creators but only one of them, Autumn Whitehurst, is the artist. She drew all cards but idea behind the cards was a collaborative work from the beginning. But I get there is difference between the cards, that doesn't however bother me much. I find the Temperance as depiction (and a few others) card much more problematic.

      I love the idea of one deck in, one deck out. I'll have to keep that in mind. I love my decks but I don't want to be overwhelmed and suffocated by them. And I want to be able to actually use them. I'm hoping I'm more ready to continue to reduce as time goes on. 🙂 Thank you for watching. ❤️

    Why can't you give em to your future self? Stick them in the attic or somewhere. You never know how your taste changes through the years. I am keeping all of my decks for the fact that I will be able to pull em out for my daughter to go through them. Having the opportunity to hold and go through a deck is much nicer than looking at it on the internet. Tiny homes have been very creative in using wasted space you need ideas.
    I wish you luck on this journey!

      I do have several put away for just this thing! I love the idea of calling it a future self box! I have about 20 or so in a box in the closet that I'm hanging on to for just this reason. You are so right about changing tastes, mine have changed alot of the years!! I need to remember that as I'm moving through decks. 🙂 Thank you for watching. ❤️

    Have you asked the guides if they have anything left to teach you, or if they want to stay? And I know you know this, but sometimes intuition is tricky. For me Cups and Wands are simply a yes, unless I feel there's more to the message. Swords and Pentacles are my no suits.

      you could look for card game trolleys, I do know of backpacks with little (adjustable) boxes for all those packs of cards. Google: piratelab 'black card carrying messenger bag' for inspiration.
      You can also look for trolleys for (camera) lenses. they often work with the same adjustable system.

    How about blessing other people with Decks that you love but want to get rid of. Like if you have people that you know that are interested in reading, look at what you have and think which one will this person resonate with.
