I get this feeling in my body like someone's hugging me and it honestly makes me want to cry. I'm sitting in my car right now holding back tears as I type this and just felt like I needed to show my appreciation for this track. A perfect embodiment of the chaos in my head.
In retrospect: Sunbather is one of the greatest black metal albums of all time. Completely changed the face of black metal upon arrival. It caused fear and doubt in the elitists. It questioned the foundation of black metal and the essence of it. Sunbather demands respect while also telling all the black metal world "yes we just defiled your expectations and norms" It's presentation was perfect: a bunch of hipsters who could tremolo and blast beat the hell out of your solo project, and they didn't care if you hated their sappy lines and Pink album cover. Is this too produced and professional for "trve" black metal standards? Obviously. Sunbather had a lot more work put in than a bedroom demo. But what it brought to the table was valuable and not corporate. Just passion
For 9 minutes that person you love is with you again...this song makes me relive all of college and reminds me of a friend whose not with us anymore...it's a beautiful song
I used to listen to classic Norwegian black metal as a teen (Emperor, Satyricon, Gehenna, Limbonic Art were some of my favs) but now, 12 yars laters, i re-discover this extreme metal that has become something entirely different and beautiful in its own right. Suprised that extreme metal artists have discovered post-rock like Mogwai, GY!BE, Sigur Ros, Explosions in The Sky and some Shoegaze creating this lushness of sound. If you like this, try Altar of Plagues and Year of No Light as well.
Listen to "Burzum", if you want even more powerful songs that take you to a different plane of existence. I recommend the records "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss" and "Filosofem".
This never gets old. It's got the kind of melody and emotional force behind it that'll bring you to tears every time. It's like I'm in this wash of notes that picks you apart, exposes your raw feelings and leaves nothing but joy and a tinge of bitter-sweet melancholy. It's beautiful.
I only JUST discovered this band thanks to my friend. I really don't understand why people care what genera this is so much. All that matters to me is that this is good music. That's all that should matter. I find people who purposely try to find the negative in everything good rather depressing.
NucaCola It's just that the black metal scene is one of the most close minded, purist categories within metal fandom (and that's saying a lot). So it's pretty much impossible to have music like this without a ton of people bitching about it.
***** That's not really what he's talking about, though. Certainly black metal has an element of hipsterdom to it (which is no doubt why hipsters were attracted to it in the first place, you never see Pitchfork talking about death metal), just that you should be weary of anyone trying to pass this off as more pure black metal. The band themselves acknowledge that they're in a much different place musically. No one's making a value judgment (even if he is acting like kind of an autist), just saying that this is where the distaste is coming from. Some people don't like that metal of any sort is gentrified or corporatized, and there's nothing wrong with that at all.
WayToTheGrave I don't think I've ever seen anyone pass this off as pure Black Metal, it's obviously quite different from bands like Burzum, Emperor, etc. I've only ever seen people call it Blackgaze. At the end of the day, I don't really care if there is posers in the scene, it's a massive waste of time trying to deter them, so I might as well focus on enjoying the music and sharing it with likeminded people. Besides, once something new and hip comes along they'll just jump onto that instead, leaving the true fans to enjoy the music.
I've always had a tough time trying to keep up with Screams an Growls in metal. But, I think Deafheaven did it to a higher extent with the vocal distortion. It was an artistic move. The screams of this song, is meant to be illiterate to hear, at least I suppose so. But its purely the SOUND of it; the screams themselves are an instrument. It sets a mood, I don't feel agony or self pity at all during this track. If anything. I feel at peace. And the fact that it sounds absolutely GORGEOUS live at Kings (Raleigh, NC). The crowd made the song just THAT much more immersing. This song is a masterpiece in my opinion. But then again, almost all atmospheric metal is masterful, esp; DSBM, Atmospheric Black Metal, Atmospheric Folk Metal (to set some examples) And that moment of silence.... Such an extremely powerful moment... I loved this song from beginning to en- actually... I wish this song was longer.... wow...
BillyxRansom Just checked this song because of this: thehardtimes.net/2015/01/14/deafheaven-bassist-falls-asleep-onstage/ Sleeping music. Confirmed. You are a real troll. Confirmed.
***** The next thing Clark remembers is Deafheaven guitarist Kerry McCoy kicking him in the ass and yelling “this isn’t fucking funny” while the band attempted to finish the song. “I was tired, too, but I would never fall asleep on stage,” said McCoy. “This isn’t a fucking joke. Everyone was laughing. It’s not a joke. It’s not fucking funny. We’re creating a new genre.”
Not so sound corny or anything but the first time I heard this song it was like somebody had made my soul into music. I have never resonated with a song more in my entire life.
@@samfunk6848 Must be bohemian rhapsody (even if the song is overly overhyped since the movie). John Lennon's Imagine comes to mind. Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. Three little birds by Bob Marley is really good but do not top my list. Yesterday by Beatles maybe. Those are some songs I really consider to be the best songs ever written.
I think this is wonderful. There are so many new Post Black Metal artists on the rise and these guys definitely stand out among the masses. This song has been an amazing journey. Many thanks to the uploader!
The calm of higher magnitude : Typically one would asociate the word calm with piano, river's flowing water or rain, it has countless representations, countless countless, yet mine would be a calmness of higher magnitude, one with so much noise it turns back into silence, too many colors eventually fading into whitness, aweird kind of calmness. It is enjoyable.
This whole album is a masterpiece. Defiant pink portrait for a dark scene. This song in particular, it's like an explosion of wrath and rage that ends in sadness. The next song, matches perfectly.
I don't normally listen to metal but damn this one is a strange one. I'm new into this "blackgaze" genre and I didnt know that you could mix shoegaze (I'm always a shoegaze fan) with metal. This feels experimental and I also like that too as I'm also a fan of experimental music. I have to say, I like this song :) seems like I will be listening to more blackgaze
Maybe i’m overanalyzing but with the “I’m dying, i want to dream” lyrics i always imagine like a robot and a human having a conversation, while the human is dying The robot wants to be human to experience dreaming and even the bad parts like death
This is my first attempt at listening to a band whose singer sounds like this. I'm really struggling when I try to follow the lyrics in sync with the song... U.u I'm still not used to this vocal style. But I definitely like this album. Give me a couple of weeks and I'll probably love it.
Try out Pulled Apart By Horses. They have the similar more upbeat approach to hardcore and you can actually understand them. I also really like Dance! Gavin Dance!'s Happiness.
@@spitgorge2021 After all these years, I kind of agree with that now. Anyway, now this album is one of my favorites, I've seen them live and I can say that I love this band. ^_^
I don't think I've ever heard a song more frustrated sounding than this. I love it. It feels like needing to release all your negative emotions through music.
Not really a metal fan, but, GOOD LORD, this song is one of the most potently emotional experiences I've had listening to music. It's completely and absolutely devastating.
One of the best ways to tell if people are open minded is whether they think they are or not. Most people that claim to be are ultimately anything but.
This song kinda uplifting kinda sad. From the quiet part to the end is all about soulfulness!! Chord progressions are the main key there. A modest but more than pretty nice achievement on harmony in "metal" (?) OR *entry whatever genre you want here*
Hindered by sober restlessness Submitting to the amber crutch The theme in my aching prose Fantasizing the sight of Manhattan That pour of a bitter red being that escapes a thin frame The rebirth of mutual love The slipping on gloves to lay tenderly I'm dying Is it blissful? It's like a dream I want to dream
I don't know a thing about screamo. But I know, to me, this sounds absolutely like black metal. Lyrics should not define genres. And more importantly this is a masterpiece. Thanks Deafheaven and Mr. Fantano!
At first I could not understand what he was saying then I read it and ever since then I’ve felt a deep and melancholic sadness everytime I get to the part of “I’m dying, is it blissful?”
This band carries so many elements I love. Just sitting doing literally nothing but listening to this song takes you away on so many levels. Breaking down the song in my head to hear every instrument is mesmerizing. Obsessed with this album. This song in particular the vocals remind me of early Converge. Fucking love it
UntilTheAftermath I mean, it's Blackgaze, so it's a completely different sound. They aren't even the first to do it, so I'm not sure what the big deal is.
Anon Ymous Blackgaze? Shut the fuck up, please. God damn. Shoe gaze is a fucking joke of a genre and now we have to hear about some bullshit called "blackgaze"? Fuck off.
xDEMONIZEDx when did shoegaze become a "fucking joke" of a genre? do you know why it's even called that? what other name would you give it? why wouldn't THAT be a "fucking joke"? please answer each in 5-paragraph essay form.
Lol. When I saw these guys live last week I couldn't help thinking "Happy Black Metal?!" I dig it. It's rare to hear such a major-esque blackened sound.
If you hate this because its not black metal, or call this hipster metal then learn to think for yourself insteaf of taking on other people's opinions to feel included in their group.
Or it is their opinion. Most people do think for themselves, just because they don't like this style of music doesn't make them mindless drones XD people are entitled to other opinions
Your contradicting yourself. This has nothing to do with self loathing and FUCKING SLITTING MY WRIST! If anything, the ONLY feeling that I'm receiving from this album is happiness, joy, rest and peace. Emo music is literally the exact OPPOSITE of that.
For anyone who'd like the lyrics: Hindered by sober restlessness Submitting to the amber crutch The theme in my aching prose Fantasizing the sight of Manhattan That pour of a bitter red being that escapes a thin frame The rebirth of mutual love The slipping on gloves to lay tenderly I'm dying Is it blissful? Makes me think Smashing Pumpkins with angst.
Lol, because Smashing Pumpkins didn't have angst
No, they had heroin.
Lance Hillis
Not cool
@Mikkel Jussila Pitchfork sucks dude
@@TeknophagistMusic Corgan never did heroin
When I first heard this song I thought "finally a post rock band that has found a way to make more people cry." I did.
This is post rock?
@@cateatinrat78 Yes
@@elrohir0 this is blackgaze, a mix between post rock and black metal
it is whatever what it is. just a fuckin good music.
It breaks my heart every fucking time. But I also want to dream at the same time. Well done, Deafheaven.
***** Lol wut. Did you even read his comment, I mean what the fuck.
CasualPoster What the fuck even, TBDM has nothing to do with black metal
Is anyone familiar with rainshine? It's when the sun is out and there are blue skies but it's also raining. That's the feeling this song gives me.
I wish this song was longer.... wow...
Every time I think about her this what plays in my head
This song is my aesthetic.
this song is my asshole
Listened until the 1:24 mark, paused it, went to buy the album, came back.
One of the greatest songs of all time.
This is obviously post blackened shoeskramz
Yep
It's also good. Better than pure bm by literally miles because pure bm is boring and the vocals are mostly shit.
BillyxRansom Just checked this song because of this: thehardtimes.net/2015/01/14/deafheaven-bassist-falls-asleep-onstage/
Sleeping music. Confirmed.
You are a real troll. Confirmed.
Eduardo Carvalho LULZ!!!!!!!!!!!
Same here and I've listen to a lot of different kind of music genres. Best song I have ever heard.
@@RedDoom33 any close seconds for songs?
@@samfunk6848 Must be bohemian rhapsody (even if the song is overly overhyped since the movie). John Lennon's Imagine comes to mind. Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. Three little birds by Bob Marley is really good but do not top my list. Yesterday by Beatles maybe. Those are some songs I really consider to be the best songs ever written.
Bohemian Rhapsody is close number 2 but the rest of them is not even close to those.
@@RedDoom33 love it. Good taste my friend.
This is the most mesmerising thing I have ever heard.
That riff at 1:33 is ripping my damn heart out
Marge Simpson brought me here
me too
explain pls
MurdocTheBassist there's a Simpsons meme with lyrics from this song
I actually thought this was a joke about the singer's voice before reading the comment about meme.
Äly hahahaha that could work too
I think this is wonderful. There are so many new Post Black Metal artists on the rise and these guys definitely stand out among the masses. This song has been an amazing journey. Many thanks to the uploader!
Ive been into metal since I was 11. and now listen to a few new bands once in a while. This is actually pretty good
It actually reminds me of old school bm for some strange reason
The calm of higher magnitude :
Typically one would asociate the word calm with piano, river's flowing water or rain, it has countless representations, countless countless, yet mine would be a calmness of higher magnitude, one with so much noise it turns back into silence, too many colors eventually fading into whitness, aweird kind of calmness.
Deftones kind of did it with alternative metal
Summer nostalgia Black Metal. ❤️
Maybe i’m overanalyzing but with the “I’m dying, i want to dream” lyrics i always imagine like a robot and a human having a conversation, while the human is dying
The robot wants to be human to experience dreaming and even the bad parts like death
Honestly one of the greatest songs ever written
Agree
easily
It sounds like a person whos mind is constantly at war with itself. I've never heard this band or song before, but i think it's beautiful
This is my first attempt at listening to a band whose singer sounds like this. I'm really struggling when I try to follow the lyrics in sync with the song... U.u
I'm still not used to this vocal style. But I definitely like this album. Give me a couple of weeks and I'll probably love it.
That's what happened with me just give it time, I hated metal before this album now I even listen to grindcore lol
Try out Pulled Apart By Horses. They have the similar more upbeat approach to hardcore and you can actually understand them. I also really like Dance! Gavin Dance!'s Happiness.
this album isn't necessarily meant to have the lyrics be understood, the vocals are more like another instrument laid on top of the track
Thanks sewerslvt
Not really a metal fan, but, GOOD LORD, this song is one of the most potently emotional experiences I've had listening to music. It's completely and absolutely devastating.
look into deathspell omega and listen to the song "abscission". you will be a metal fan.
5:51 - FUCKING chills!!!!
I love to listen to this music laid on the roof of my house at night. Looking at the stars, it makes me miss people that I lost. My mom, my brother...
It sounds so passionate
I haven't listened to this band much at all but they sound really good live I must say. I was impressed by their performance in Vegas.
At psycho festival? That concert was actually pretty weak because of the beach stage but deafheaven has one of the best live shows in metal ATM
Amazing album, Post-Black Metal
One of the best ways to tell if people are open minded is whether they think they are or not. Most people that claim to be are ultimately anything but.
I want to dream.
It took me a long time to get here, but I'm glad I finally did.
it warms my heart to know the N64 went on to bigger and better things.
audio quality is fucked to the max on this upload wtf why does this have 700k views
its meant to be on purpose
This song kinda uplifting kinda sad. From the quiet part to the end is all about soulfulness!! Chord progressions are the main key there. A modest but more than pretty nice achievement on harmony in "metal" (?) OR *entry whatever genre you want here*
This is the audio equivalent of being bacteria on a speeding bullet to heaven. So fucking good.
Some how it gives me that end of afternoon feelings
Hindered by sober restlessness
Submitting to the amber crutch
The theme in my aching prose
Fantasizing the sight of Manhattan
That pour of a bitter red being that escapes a thin frame
The rebirth of mutual love
The slipping on gloves to lay tenderly
I'm dying
Is it blissful?
It's like a dream
I want to dream
Shoegaze metal is here!!! Wow
Shoegaze Metal has existed since the early 2000s.
It’s called blackgaze
blackened shoecore
This isn’t even remotely close to sounding like Shoegaze
uhmmmm excuse me it's post blackened poopoist anarco-punk shoecock pop-rock
There's basically no other song that makes me feel this good.
Music to listen to while you're being crucified.
wow edgelord here
This band carries so many elements I love. Just sitting doing literally nothing but listening to this song takes you away on so many levels. Breaking down the song in my head to hear every instrument is mesmerizing. Obsessed with this album. This song in particular the vocals remind me of early Converge. Fucking love it
I don't listen to death metal at all, and i really liked this album.
I'm sure this is why everyone who listens to black metal hates these guys.
Fuck off.
xDEMONIZEDx what the fuck is wrong with shoegaze? i take looking sad at my delay pedals and playing basic chord progressions very seriously
xDEMONIZEDx
when did shoegaze become a "fucking joke" of a genre?
do you know why it's even called that?
what other name would you give it?
why wouldn't THAT be a "fucking joke"?
please answer each in 5-paragraph essay form.
Olehghgh Ustimenko hahahahahahaha i laughed so hard at this
This song feels like chasing my dreams. I listen to it everyday in hopes I can one day achieve fulfillment.
I came here from Adult Swim's "Off the Air - Death". Fucking beautiful man.
So many good memories with this song.
That fucking ending, holy shit.
My dad stole one of my AirPods while listening to this. Umm. How’s your day going?
well, first time listening to and this band is awesome O_O
0=o
LOL @ metalheads when indiekidz start liking their music so they pretend they have disowned particular bands
Average Dream fan vs. Average Dream House enjoyer.
Lovin' this band.
the second part of this song gives me life
This is easily one of my favorite albums ever, one I rarely will call a masterpiece
Amazing. Beautiful. And simply epic.
finally, something relatively new in metal
This track just changed my mind... \m/
Ur mind over what , u mean that this band is awesome i agree if so
I can't think of any reason why such a great album is so hated other than because it's cool to hate it.
Tomas Ferreira music is subjective, no matter how great the album is, there's always people that wont like it
This is an OK album, I'm enjoying it thus far but as far as I'm concerned I still throw this under "emo garbage."
Your contradicting yourself. This has nothing to do with self loathing and FUCKING SLITTING MY WRIST! If anything, the ONLY feeling that I'm receiving from this album is happiness, joy, rest and peace. Emo music is literally the exact OPPOSITE of that.
For anyone who'd like the lyrics:
Hindered by sober restlessness
Submitting to the amber crutch
The theme in my aching prose
Fantasizing the sight of Manhattan
That pour of a bitter red being that escapes a thin frame
The rebirth of mutual love
The slipping on gloves to lay tenderly
I'm dying
Is it blissful?
It's like a dream
I want to dream
Amazing melodies, and the voice is just perfect for this song!
This feels like bathing in a warm rain of flowers while everything around is just ruins as the world is ending.
