  • Hi! Here's the final part of our oldest, coldest start yet! This field-find Plymouth Road King hasn't been driven in over 50 years, so let's crank it up and try to take Stella for a ride...

    This is what I'd call a decent Wednesday night. Watching a coldwarmotors "Will it Run?" video and eating ketchup flavored chips, and drinking a beer. I really like it when you get these old beasties running again. Oh and seeing Stella of course. Cheers from Maine. *:-)*

      Southern Mechanics My thoughts exactly, until I tasted them . We need to get ketchup chips here in the States! They're really quite tasty.
      Lays keeps testing out really wrong flavored chips recently, so why not ketchup? Biscuits and gravy potato chips??? Really?? Those are an affront to anyone who actually eats biscuits and gravy. (like myself!)

I remember having a same era limo that Bruce Brogden had and we used it for a Band equipment hauler... So cool with its semi automatic...Our band was the Grimm Reaper ( Sam and Dave music) the other band , that shared the Plymouth Limo was "The Grass Company" cousin Jim and Kim Mitchell at the helm . Yes that's the "Go for a Soda " Kim Thanks for the coolness and Great vidsAlberta Dave

    Friend's father gave me a 1941 Plymouth 4 dr sedan in 1962. My friend was always in trouble so he gifted it to me. Pretty good car. Not a lot of power, had a few issues. I could pull the generator (6 volt) and clean the commutator in about 15 minutes. Had to change the king pins. That was a challenge, Added a leaf spring on each side to jack the rear end up. Little did I know I would be driving a 3/4 Ton truck in Vietnam with essentially the same flat head six. Not much power. Lost the brakes on the 3/4 ton heading down the Mang Yang Pass on QL19 June 1968. Painted my 1941 Baltic Blue (It had been tan). Paint spray drifted onto my aunts brand new 1962 Chev Nova. Had to compound it out.
    I was 16 years old. The good ole days. Cars were simple and easy to work on. Much more reliable today however. Thanks for the memory.

  • @peterhinsf

    One of the agents (I think his name is Justin?) asked when the industry went to 12-volt systems. As he so often does, Scott answered very well by saying that most of the industry switched over in the 1956 model year. Another commenter here gave additional info about Chevrolet and Ford. I spend lots and lots of work time reading old car brochures instead of doing my actual job, so ... at last! ... here's a chance for me to offer some of that completely non-income producing info! Yay!! :-)
    The two biggest reasons for the switch from 6-volt to 12-volt systems was (1) higher system capacity for more electrical accessories, and (2) more powerful ignition systems. That latter reason was especially important for the new high-compression V8 engines that were coming on the market; 6-volt systems often didn't provide enough oomph to keep these engines from misfiring, especially at high speeds and/or when the plugs started getting fouled.
    The first to go 12-volt in 1953 were the GM B-body Oldsmobile 88 series (but not the Buick Special) and C-bodies (Olds 98, Buick Super and Roadmaster, and Cadillac Series 62). Both Oldsmobile and Cadillac introduced high-compression V8s in 1949; Buick introduced theirs in 1953, so the need for stronger ignition systems was there. In fact, the 1953 Oldsmobile brochure takes up a whole page rhapsodizing about the modern wonder of 12-volt motoring. (The 1953 Buick Special still had the old Buick straight-8 engine, so it remained 6-volt; in 1954, GM redesigned the B- and C-body lines, and the new Special finally got the V8 engine, so it also got the 12-volt system. Buick also re-introduced the B-bodied Century for 1954.)
    Also in 1954, the Chrysler Imperial (the last year when it was not ignorant to say "Chrysler Imperial"!!) 8-passenger limo went 12-volt, perhaps as a way for Chrysler to "dip its toe in" first before committing to 12-volt systems across the product line, something they sometimes had a habit of doing.
    For 1955, the brand-new GM A-bodies (Chevrolet and Pontiac) both introduced new high-compression V8s, and both went 12-volt. Everyone else (all Ford Motor Company products, the remaining Chrysler line, American Motors, and Packard in its ACTUAL final year) switched to 12-volt systems for the 1956 model year. And with that, vacuum windshield wipers and hydraulic "power" windows could now be banished forever.

    I love how Tom gets the latest word every time!! Working some more magic on the old forgotten cars of a previous generation I see. I enjoy seeing a car from the 40's in her unmolested state being celebrated for being just as she is. It takes a very cultured and experienced car guy to chase after these old girls, not to mention the skills needed to revive them. Keep doing what you do Scott. You and the agents are a rare breed in today's world, and in my opinion have made the most interesting and entertaining channel on TH-cam. There was an episode on "happy days" from the 70s in which Richie Cunningham (Ron Howard) buys an old car very similar to that 41 Plymouth. One of his pals derisively referred to it as a "steamship" (not the kind of car that a high school kid would like to have during the 50s).

    It's always awesome when I turn on you tube and see that Coldwarmotors has put up another video! That 41 looks like a lot of fun! Think I'll go back and watch a few more " will it run?" episodes. Cheers!

    You did it again buddy, great to see that old Plymouth cruising around on it's own!! If I could put in a request, please do a cold start challenge with this girl next winter. Cheers from Massachusetts!

    Your videos are great. Just the way I remember mechanics. Thanks for keeping it real - and of course for not just sub-framing it and dropping in a Vortec engine, etc. These old cars are a lot of fun to see running.

    This was some of your best work. This and the 52 Ford would have been great cars back when I was sixteen. I would have loved to see you spruce one of those old girls up, give her a single stage paint job after patching holes and pounding out the worst dents. Fix her up a little better than a teenager might have done in 1965 but nothing fancy. Maybe replace that flathead six with a slant six and a four speed. Tune up the chassis, put on some decent radials. Make it a daily driver that that any high schooler would be proud to own.

    Looking forward to the swell mohair interior you'l eventually sew up.
    Plymouth is just right- a worthy second daily.
    A vehicle like that would do well as a dirt-road runner down here in the desert- maybe add a leaf all around, new set of bias snows, new shocks and away you go.
    Also, glad I'm not the only one that shuffles one 6-volt battery between vehicles.

    Hi Scott and Stella, I subscribed fairly recently and have been spending a few days catching up on your back catalogue of videos, I think what you and your friends are doing is fantastic preserving your country's motoring heritage and having fun at the same time. I'm not Sure if many Rover p4's got exported to Canada but if you can find one and add it to your collection I don't think you would be disappointed. keep up the great work and tell Stella I said hi.

      @coldwarmotors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks for the note and for checking it out; always a treat to hear from anyone who likes this kind of thing. I would happily add a P4, 5 or 6 to the fleet here, but they are rare in Canada, for sure. My sister would like a P5, so we are keeping our eyes open for a good one... such nice cars! All the best from me and Stel...

    that's amazing. When it's moving again under it's own power for the firs ttime in ages, do you ever think about the people for whom it was just unremarkable everyday transportation? The idea that this moving space held other before who lived in a wholly different world, well it would probably occupy my mind with imagined echoes of who they must have been, where they must have went, what must have been on their minds as they made their way from point A to point B...

    The 72 Fury was referred to as "the old staff car" in an older segment. I assumed that there were many 420 fact finding missions with various agents associated with that fine machine. It's the only car with the necessary trunk for 6 foot water pipes (for legal herbs and tobacco only, mind you). You have an amazing way way of making want cars I never had any interest in owning . Well done and thanks

    • @coldwarmotors
      @coldwarmotors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right! Yeah, I forgot that you can see the 72 in the background here... I love that thing, but it's gotten too rough for daily duty, and now that the Frazer is operational I've assigned it Staff Car status, haha! Thanks for the kind words and for watching this stuff! Cheers from me and Stella and the Agents...
