I'm almost certain the lines here were all recorded by each person individually without listening to each other. IIRC, some lines, like the Barry Grenade Launcher line were recorded without even knowing full details of the game, in this case what the weapon was, hence the extremely generic "Powerful Weapon". It's probably why conversations don't flow. Also note that the pregnant pauses in the original ps1 are because they are individually loading lines to play. These pauses don't exist on PC.
I always see people stating that the name Resident Evil is about fighting evil in a residence. I used to think the same when the first game came out.. but after it became a franchise and there was no residences anymore but the name remained I went back to the title and found a different interpretation that may or may no be intentional. For me Resident Evil has nothing to do with the mansion... but with the virus itself. A virus is a resident that lives inside an organism.. After doing a quick research I found some scientific articles that do refer to viruses or parasites as residents and the victims as hosts. It all makes sense now.. Resident Evil is an evil resident that resides inside a host.. this concept fits all entries of the series.. viruses, las plagas, etc.
Interesting theory. Sounds like the missing link between the original Japanese title "Bio-Hazard" and the English title "Resident Evil". A bio-hazard caused by an evil virus resident in its hosts.

Now, you might think that that would explain the reason why the soundtrack was so weird, but the actual reason behind it is even weirder. Because it turned out Mamoru Samuragochi was FAKING his partial deafness and in reality hired a ghost writer named Takashi Niigaki to compose the soundtrack instead

The thing I find most impressive about Barry Burton is that, despite being in an advanced state of dementia and perpetually confused at all times ("WHAT IS THIS?"), he's still such a badass. I've never been so impressed with an Alzheimer's patient.

In my opinion Barry's worst line was "This hall is dangerous." because it's actually one of the few rooms without any monsters. As a kid I thougt I simply didn't understand what he meant by that, haha.

I do think Resident Evil as franchise itself really is the foundation of how games are now. Resident Evil 1-4 gave birth to how survival horror should be, how action games should be, and how third person shooter should be. Without RE 1 - 4 there will be no Devil May Cry, Dead Space, Silent Hill, Uncharted, The Last Of Us, and many more games.

Great retrospective, this game brings back so many good memories. To me, the best version of the classic RE 1 is RE DS, I love all the little extras they added, like the awesome knife mode or silly details like being able to poke Jill's butt with the stylus.
Your voice is so beautiful and soothing. I could listen it forever. One teeny nitpick though: there's actually two different "Director's Cut" versions of RE1; the one called just that, with original OST and all intact, and the "Director's Cut: Dual Shock Edition", which is the one with the notorious new music and other issues. Yeah, all these re-releases can get very confusing. Unfortunate to us, the version of RE1 in the PSN Store is exactly that DC:DSE version, even though its title says just "Director's Cut".
I'd also like to pop in and say that the PC release of Resident Evil 1 is actually pretty decent if you can get it running on a modern system (preferably with a CRT as well). It has the least censorship in the cutscenes out of any US version...though for some reason the JP Saturn version is the one with the most gore. The saturn release also a very underrated version, featuring new enemies (albeit they are mostly reskins) and it has some sort of "battle mode" that I've never tried. The graphical changes are great but it just ends up looking slightly lower in color-depth compared to PS1. Anyway, just some tidbits on what the "good ports of original resi" might be.
I only bought the GameCube for the remake of resident evil back in 2002. It’s crazy to think that the remaster of the remake looks phenomenal. The RE remake has aged incredibly well.
I bought a dreamcast just to play code veronica cos it was "dreamcast exclusive" only for it to come out on ps2 later lol then I bought a gamecube cos of the resident evil remake

I think you should mention few things: Sweet Home was inspired by other well know classic Maniac Mansion. Biohazard ment to be a 1st person shooter but later changed to what we know know after Fugiwata saw and played Alone in the Dark. Vanilla version of RE1 is also known for one other thing, same as RE2 it does NOT have auto aim despite Biohazrad (jp ver) had that. Reason behind that was that in Japan you CAN'T rent a games, but in the US you can, and Capcom was afraid they will loose money because game was quite short and ppl who will rent it wont buy it after one playthrought. So they removed autoaim and even make game overall harder (harder enemies, less ammo). To this day I consider RE1 Vanilla to be THE hardest RE game in the series, I can say that >3h Chris in RE1 is harder then Chris Hard on Invisible enemies in RE Remake.
There is no link between Sweet Home and Maniac Mansion. Sweet Home was based on the J-horror movie also called Sweet Home. True that it was originally planned to be first-person perspective, but not a first-person shooter. It was planned to be a first-person horror remake of Sweet Home, like what RE7 became. But the PS1 hardware wasn't powerful enough to pull off fully 3D, first-person view with decent graphics. And then after discovering Alone in the Dark, they realized pre-rendered backdrops would be more suitable for the PS1.
Resident Evil is a franchise that has been solid for 22 years. There was not a single bad game in the main entries. Sure, there were hits and misses, and some people don't like the action-based Resi games, but they are all damn good and fun to play. Yes, even 6). And yeah, the Remake is the Resi King) It was so good that, about 10 years ago, I when I didn't have a Gamecube or Wii,I used an emulator to play it. And, despite numerous glitches and FPS drops (20 was considered a blessing), I couldn't stop playing it. Great video, looking forward to the rest of the series)
@Ur Waifu is Shit The Gamecube Remake begs to differ, along with Zero. And Resi 3 can be pretty tough if you're too trigger-happy in the beginning. So no, the only action RE games among the classics are Resi 2 and CV.
@Ur Waifu is Shit Action touch and full action games are different. The first Resi had plenty of these "action touches" as well, but it does not make it an action game like 4,5,6. And I've said that I'm talking about classic RE, before 4.
@Ur Waifu is Shit Fair enough, but I still think that if there is an emphasis on exploration and item managemen, you can't really tag a game as action. The ability to blast away at zombies was a reward for conserving ammo in the beginning and for your meticulous search for supplies. Try blasting away in the Remake on Hard, for example, and you'll be out of ammo in no time. Same goes for Resi 3. Try to create too many handgun bullets, and you won't be able to take down Drain Demons and Hunters. My point is, if you play it smart in the beginning, you'll be able to let off your steam by killing monsters. It's kinda like "Survival Horror" in the beginning and "Action Horror" halfway through. I guess we know these games too good, so they've become too easy for people like you and me)
Man, 6 is legitimately really cool and unique and I love a few things about its movement system; just give it a few tweaks and it would be very, very cool. The concept of this heavily interwoven story was very cool and pretty well executed. There are random issues that are pretty bad like questionable boss design with Simmons but as a game, it was really cool.
Eh no, resident evil 6 was a complete disgusting failure. Resident evil 5 only managed to scrape by because it was a genuinely fun game to play with a friend, Resident Evil 4 was the perfect inbetween for horror and action but still had a little goofy attitude about it. The older series aren't by any means perfect but they did shine more in certain aspects like, not being directly told what to do so you're required to explore to find out what's going on and how to advance the story, also because of the lack of control you had with the controls (lol) it only intensified the horror. Now when it comes to Resident evil 2 remake, it's just perfect it combines the horror of the originals with the newer (better imo) controls.
I have found memories of this game as a kid. But my favorite was my dad decided to try it out, first time I seen him play video games, and the first zombie that attacked Kenneth. we told him to just run from it. He says "I run from nobody". this game will always be a classic
Oh... my God. I never knew you could wait for Barry to return. In games it seems that these kind of sequences are not really choice based, I always saw it as "It will take too long for him to find another rope, move along on your own." type of thing. Dang, that's actually really cool!
So after Resident Evil 2 Remake, I hope Capcom remakes the original Dino Crisis and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Maybe remake Code Veronica and Resident Evil 4 too. Looks like they may be testing the waters to bring back Omnimusha next year too. Though it is a bit disappointing it's just a rerelease of the 1st game and not the entire trilogy or a full remake.
Genome Soldat I dont really think an RE4 Remake is necessary. It's already on modern consoles and the game is good enough how it already is. RE3 and CVX is worth remaking. Resident Evil 3 Nemesis because people who never got to play it will be able to play a polished version with better voice acting. Resident Evil Code Veronica X because the same thing, but also because they will have a chance to make Steve Burnside actually *LIKEABLE*
RE4 was made for GameCube, PS2, and originally a very terrible PC port. I think it getting a RE2 Remake in the RE7 engine would be awesome. Sure RE4 is on current consoles and pc, but it's not a full remake.
I'm still relatively new to Resident Evil as a series. I had played the original game as a kid at a friend's house, but didn't give the series a serious go until recently. I'm currently making my way through the original RE3 and TH-cam recommended me your channel once again. This time, I decided to click it and hear you out. I could tell you were smiling through most of the video and that you're really passionate about what you talk about. I love that George Romero vibe that the game has, we already know that Romero's filmography was important when creating this game (and Shinji managed to give it his personality). In "Diary of The Dead 2007" at the end the characters go to a Mansion and Romero uses the Security Cameras for the plans and give it that "Documentary" style and feels like a reference to RE, the Mansion, The Fixed Cameras, The Zombies ... all very Resident Evil but it is still a Romero movie. Use the Translator since my English is very good for understanding what listening or reading consists of, but I am very bad at speaking or writing it (since I can't find how to use the words😅).

And ehhh... Chris's scenario being "harder" depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Are you trying to beat the game as fast as possible, saving willy nilly? Then yes, Jill's scenario is easier. Are you trying to do what I did the first time I played the game and actually SURVIVE, playing the game with continuity? Then you get a lot farther with Chris. Everything takes longer, but he just has so much crucial extra health, not to mention I have heard he critical hits with most guns and knives more often, which seemed to be true in my experience. In Chris's scenario I lived all the way until I emerged from the basement and was ambushed by two hunters in the hallway in the awkward zone where I sort of had too much health to waste a healing item but not enough to survive. When I played through the second time but with Jill, I died in the first encounter with Yawn. Full health too. I think Chris can take two bites before he needs to heal, Jill only took one and I got surprised that second time around and got swallowed up.
Cool vid! I couldn't help but notice 3 mistakes though. You said there are 6 endings per character, but that's in the Remake, in the original game, there are only 4: -only player character survives, 2nd tyrant fight does not take place and mansion does not explode -player character + Chris/Jill survive, 2nd tyrant fight does not take place and mansion does not explode -player character + Barry/Rebecca survive, 2nd tyrant fight takes place and mansion explodes -player character and both Barry/Rebecca and Chris/Jill survive, 2nd tyrant fight takes place and mansion explodes In the Remake, there are two additional endings, because the main side-character (Barry for Jill and Rebecca for Chris) can get killed during the second tyrant fight, which is not possible in the original, as you always fight the tyrant alone. The second mistake is that small keys do not actually open doors but small cabinets that contain ammo or (in one case) ink ribbons, so they're all optional. The key that Chris uses to open the doors that Jill unlocks with her lockpick is the sword key, which is only found in his scenario. All of this was changed in the remake: in it, small keys (which are now called old keys) actually are used to open doors, there are no longer locked cabinets, and the sword key appears in both Chris's and Jill's scenarios. The third and final mistake is that the remade soundtrack is not featured in the Director's Cut, but in the Director's Cut Dual Shock Version, which is a separate, third version of the game.

When I was a kid I was playing the original 96’ Resident Evil with an unlimited health cheat on (I’m not even sure how, I was 10 and I think my friend owned the game on pc) and I basically got sandwiched between the zombies at 3:46, one would bite me and soon as he let go the other was biting me, Jill wouldn’t push either one far enough back to give me space to escape, i let it go on for about 10 minutes to get a laugh and show my brother, then I just gave up and reloaded the game. Also I love your comment about the Tyrant “going down without a fight” in the first tussle, as the only reason I was able to defeat him was another glitch, I never had any ammo left when I would get to the end, one grenade round, couple handgun shots and my knife, after depleting my ammo the Tyrant would usually just chase me around until he killed me, until one attempt the Tyrant got stuck on Wesker’s dead body, literally stuck, couldn’t move, like he was frozen, so I just ran up and easily knifed him to death, I couldn’t believe it, that was my first time ever actually beating the game.

Resident Evil 1 will always hold a special place in my heart - it was the source of the first nightmare I ever had in my life. I watched the scene in the beginning where you run into the first zombie of the game and see it eating some gray matter and could not stop shaking the rest of the day. Great stuff!
Your insights are so full of passion that I wanted to replay the first chapter. I recently replayed 2, 3 and Code Veronica on the Dreamcast, I do it every few years, together with Dino Crisis but I haven't touched the first one since I was a child. Long story short, I'm doing it right now on a Sega Saturn that I bought in 2009 along with Resident Evil when I was working in London for Square Enix. I must say that I'm happy of this choice, it's nice to go back where it all began. My interest in the series began to wane with RE 4 to die definitively with RE 5 but thanks to the remakes it returned. I can't wait for the Code Veronica one to come out, not only to play it but also to watch your video about it. Greetings from Italy!
Just found your channel while I’m neck deep into my love of Resident Evil. I was a late bloomer getting into the series, only starting a few years ago for streams, and I’ve immediately fallen in love with the series. The creator of survival horror is still the best franchise of said genre today, now that REmake 2 will be out in 4 months, it will most likely retain it’s almost royal like status
I can't believe I made it to this channel so late. I remember when this game came out and we rented the disc in this place called "blockbuster". LOL. I do think Resident Evil as franchise itself really is the foundation of how games are now. Resident Evil 1-4 gave birth to how survival horror should be, how action games should be, and how third person shooter should be. Without RE 1 - 4 there will be no Devil May Cry, Dead Space, Silent Hill, Uncharted, The Last Of Us, and many more games.

Great retrospective, this game brings back so many good memories. To me, the best version of the classic RE 1 is RE DS, I love all the little extras they added, like the awesome knife mode or silly details like being able to poke Jill's butt with the stylus.

One teeny nitpick though: there's actually two different "Director's Cut" versions of RE1; the one called just that, with original OST and all intact, and the "Director's Cut: Dual Shock Edition", which is the one with the notorious new music and other issues.
Yeah, all these re-releases can get very confusing. Unfortunate to us, the version of RE1 in the PSN Store is exactly that DC:DSE version, even though its title says just "Director's Cut".
Came here to make the same silly correction, but cheers for the extra information about the PSN version.
I'd also like to pop in and say that the PC release of Resident Evil 1 is actually pretty decent if you can get it running on a modern system (preferably with a CRT as well). It has the least censorship in the cutscenes out of any US version...though for some reason the JP Saturn version is the one with the most gore. The saturn release also a very underrated version, featuring new enemies (albeit they are mostly reskins) and it has some sort of "battle mode" that I've never tried. The graphical changes are great but it just ends up looking slightly lower in color-depth compared to PS1. Anyway, just some tidbits on what the "good ports of original resi" might be.

I think you should mention few things:
Sweet Home was inspired by other well know classic Maniac Mansion.
Biohazard ment to be a 1st person shooter but later changed to what we know know after Fugiwata saw and played Alone in the Dark.
Vanilla version of RE1 is also known for one other thing, same as RE2 it does NOT have auto aim despite Biohazrad (jp ver) had that. Reason behind that was that in Japan you CAN'T rent a games, but in the US you can, and Capcom was afraid they will loose money because game was quite short and ppl who will rent it wont buy it after one playthrought. So they removed autoaim and even make game overall harder (harder enemies, less ammo). To this day I consider RE1 Vanilla to be THE hardest RE game in the series, I can say that >3h Chris in RE1 is harder then Chris Hard on Invisible enemies in RE Remake.
There is no link between Sweet Home and Maniac Mansion. Sweet Home was based on the J-horror movie also called Sweet Home.
True that it was originally planned to be first-person perspective, but not a first-person shooter. It was planned to be a first-person horror remake of Sweet Home, like what RE7 became. But the PS1 hardware wasn't powerful enough to pull off fully 3D, first-person view with decent graphics. And then after discovering Alone in the Dark, they realized pre-rendered backdrops would be more suitable for the PS1.

Resident Evil is a franchise that has been solid for 22 years. There was not a single bad game in the main entries. Sure, there were hits and misses, and some people don't like the action-based Resi games, but they are all damn good and fun to play. Yes, even 6).
And yeah, the Remake is the Resi King) It was so good that, about 10 years ago, I when I didn't have a Gamecube or Wii,I used an emulator to play it. And, despite numerous glitches and FPS drops (20 was considered a blessing), I couldn't stop playing it. Great video, looking forward to the rest of the series)
@Ur Waifu is Shit The Gamecube Remake begs to differ, along with Zero. And Resi 3 can be pretty tough if you're too trigger-happy in the beginning. So no, the only action RE games among the classics are Resi 2 and CV.
@Ur Waifu is Shit Action touch and full action games are different. The first Resi had plenty of these "action touches" as well, but it does not make it an action game like 4,5,6. And I've said that I'm talking about classic RE, before 4.
@Ur Waifu is Shit Fair enough, but I still think that if there is an emphasis on exploration and item managemen, you can't really tag a game as action. The ability to blast away at zombies was a reward for conserving ammo in the beginning and for your meticulous search for supplies. Try blasting away in the Remake on Hard, for example, and you'll be out of ammo in no time. Same goes for Resi 3. Try to create too many handgun bullets, and you won't be able to take down Drain Demons and Hunters. My point is, if you play it smart in the beginning, you'll be able to let off your steam by killing monsters. It's kinda like "Survival Horror" in the beginning and "Action Horror" halfway through.
I guess we know these games too good, so they've become too easy for people like you and me)
Man, 6 is legitimately really cool and unique and I love a few things about its movement system; just give it a few tweaks and it would be very, very cool.
The concept of this heavily interwoven story was very cool and pretty well executed. There are random issues that are pretty bad like questionable boss design with Simmons but as a game, it was really cool.
Eh no, resident evil 6 was a complete disgusting failure. Resident evil 5 only managed to scrape by because it was a genuinely fun game to play with a friend, Resident Evil 4 was the perfect inbetween for horror and action but still had a little goofy attitude about it. The older series aren't by any means perfect but they did shine more in certain aspects like, not being directly told what to do so you're required to explore to find out what's going on and how to advance the story, also because of the lack of control you had with the controls (lol) it only intensified the horror. Now when it comes to Resident evil 2 remake, it's just perfect it combines the horror of the originals with the newer (better imo) controls.

So after Resident Evil 2 Remake, I hope Capcom remakes the original Dino Crisis and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Maybe remake Code Veronica and Resident Evil 4 too.
Looks like they may be testing the waters to bring back Omnimusha next year too. Though it is a bit disappointing it's just a rerelease of the 1st game and not the entire trilogy or a full remake.
Genome Soldat I dont really think an RE4 Remake is necessary. It's already on modern consoles and the game is good enough how it already is. RE3 and CVX is worth remaking. Resident Evil 3 Nemesis because people who never got to play it will be able to play a polished version with better voice acting. Resident Evil Code Veronica X because the same thing, but also because they will have a chance to make Steve Burnside actually *LIKEABLE*
RE4 was made for GameCube, PS2, and originally a very terrible PC port. I think it getting a RE2 Remake in the RE7 engine would be awesome.

I'm still relatively new to Resident Evil as a series. I had played the original game as a kid at a friend's house, but didn't give the series a serious go until recently. I'm currently making my way through the original RE3 and TH-cam recommended me your channel once again. This time, I decided to click it and hear you out. I could tell you were smiling through most of the video and that you're really passionate about what you talk about. I love that George Romero vibe that the game has, we already know that Romero's filmography was important when creating this game (and Shinji managed to give it his personality). In "Diary of The Dead 2007" at the end the characters go to a Mansion and Romero uses the Security Cameras for the plans and give it that "Documentary" style and feels like a reference to RE, the Mansion, The Fixed Cameras, The Zombies ... all very Resident Evil but it is still a Romero movie.
Use the Translator since my English is very good for understanding what listening or reading consists of, but I am very bad at speaking or writing it (since I can't find how to use the words😅).

ok but actually "...chris? :/ ... stahp it... :(" is my favorite wesker thing to exsist ever. this shit is comedy gold, you cant make this up intentionally if you tried! so fuckin good... Im legit wheezing rn and ive seen it so many times before. lmao
And ehhh... Chris's scenario being "harder" depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Are you trying to beat the game as fast as possible, saving willy nilly? Then yes, Jill's scenario is easier. Are you trying to do what I did the first time I played the game and actually SURVIVE, playing the game with continuity? Then you get a lot farther with Chris. Everything takes longer, but he just has so much crucial extra health, not to mention I have heard he critical hits with most guns and knives more often, which seemed to be true in my experience.
In Chris's scenario I lived all the way until I emerged from the basement and was ambushed by two hunters in the hallway in the awkward zone where I sort of had too much health to waste a healing item but not enough to survive.
When I played through the second time but with Jill, I died in the first encounter with Yawn. Full health too. I think Chris can take two bites before he needs to heal, Jill only took one and I got surprised that second time around and got swallowed up.
Cool vid! I couldn't help but notice 3 mistakes though. You said there are 6 endings per character, but that's in the Remake, in the original game, there are only 4:
-only player character survives, 2nd tyrant fight does not take place and mansion does not explode
-player character + Chris/Jill survive, 2nd tyrant fight does not take place and mansion does not explode
-player character + Barry/Rebecca survive, 2nd tyrant fight takes place and mansion explodes
-player character and both Barry/Rebecca and Chris/Jill survive, 2nd tyrant fight takes place and mansion explodes
In the Remake, there are two additional endings, because the main side-character (Barry for Jill and Rebecca for Chris) can get killed during the second tyrant fight, which is not possible in the original, as you always fight the tyrant alone.
The second mistake is that small keys do not actually open doors but small cabinets that contain ammo or (in one case) ink ribbons, so they're all optional. The key that Chris uses to open the doors that Jill unlocks with her lockpick is the sword key, which is only found in his scenario. All of this was changed in the remake: in it, small keys (which are now called old keys) actually are used to open doors, there are no longer locked cabinets, and the sword key appears in both Chris's and Jill's scenarios.
The third and final mistake is that the remade soundtrack is not featured in the Director's Cut, but in the Director's Cut Dual Shock Version, which is a separate, third version of the game.

The look on Jill's face when Chris and Wesker where playing the trumpets for the Kitchen theme was hilarious and I can't blame her for that as well.
"What is this?" (Barry walking into mansion) is a line I wish I could use with my family. But none of them are even familiar with these games. So, I just have to throw Star Wars and Star Trek lines around instead.
When I was a kid I was playing the original 96’ Resident Evil with an unlimited health cheat on (I’m not even sure how, I was 10 and I think my friend owned the game on pc) and I basically got sandwiched between the zombies at 3:46, one would bite me and soon as he let go the other was biting me, Jill wouldn’t push either one far enough back to give me space to escape, i let it go on for about 10 minutes to get a laugh and show my brother, then I just gave up and reloaded the game.
Also I love your comment about the Tyrant “going down without a fight” in the first tussle, as the only reason I was able to defeat him was another glitch, I never had any ammo left when I would get to the end, one grenade round, couple handgun shots and my knife, after depleting my ammo the Tyrant would usually just chase me around until he killed me, until one attempt the Tyrant got stuck on Wesker’s dead body, literally stuck, couldn’t move, like he was frozen, so I just ran up and easily knifed him to death, I couldn’t believe it, that was my first time ever actually beating the game.

Resident Evil 1 will always hold a special place in my heart - it was the source of the first nightmare I ever had in my life. I watched the scene in the beginning where you run into the first zombie of the game and see it eating some gray matter and could not stop shaking the rest of the day. Great stuff!

Your insights are so full of passion that I wanted to replay the first chapter. I recently replayed 2, 3 and Code Veronica on the Dreamcast, I do it every few years, together with Dino Crisis but I haven't touched the first one since I was a child. Long story short, I'm doing it right now on a Sega Saturn that I bought in 2009 along with Resident Evil when I was working in London for Square Enix. I must say that I'm happy of this choice, it's nice to go back where it all began. My interest in the series began to wane with RE 4 to die definitively with RE 5 but thanks to the remakes it returned. I can't wait for the Code Veronica one to come out, not only to play it but also to watch your video about it. Greetings from Italy!

I was a late bloomer getting into the series, only starting a few years ago for streams, and I’ve immediately fallen in love with the series.
