  • I get asked almost weekly to try out the Fujifilm X-E1, and I finally did! Thanks to Kevin for loaning me the camera and giving me the chance. Super cool camera. Amazing shutter sound. Logical controls. Great image quality straight from the camera. It was an awesome experience using it, and I can see why people really get into these cameras.

    For me it feels like cameras has peaked at 2010-2012 for an average user. After that it's just some minor incremental updates each year, like faster shooting speed, faster AF, higher megapixels etc... but the quality of each photo came from those newer cameras still the same as those in 2010 like this XE1.

    “Should you buy X-E1?” … Are you kidding?! YES, you should! The X-Trans sensor Gen1 CAN NOT BE beat! The colours produced by this decade old camera are incredible. I have TWO of these cameras :) Got them for $280 and $200 CAD respectively - so cheap! 😁

    Just a warning to others as this is a lovely video and some nice shots in there.
    I got sucked into the sensor hype for these "older" x mount Fujis (the much venerated XE2-S, of which I thankfully got a good deal on I was able to recoup when I resold ) and was just constantly frustrated. Yes the colours are nice (but what modern camera isn’t) but only when the wildly fluctuating white balance and subpar dynamic range didn’t try it’s best to ruin every other shot - particularly in low light or paired with vintage lenses it was a miserable experience.
    By contrast, I never had the same issue with an X-S10 and the same lenses I also owned at the time which is far less romantically described but produced much better results for me.

      Very interesting to hear your opinion, as I have the Sexy One and the XS-10, and am currently looking to get a XT1 for the second generation X-Trans sensor. I agree with you that the image quality of the XS-10 is objevctivley better, it's also faster, and has a lot of nice extras, but I think you might be missing the point of the Sexy One. If you ever shot film, you will understand the limitations that you mentioned above as mere kinks that you have to learn to shoot around. I have slowly grown into understanding the camera to the point that I can use it now in ways that work in my favor, and which allow me to take pictures with texture and life that is impossible to accomplish with the XS-10. Like Miles Davies said "Sometimes it's the notes you don't play." I like the XS-10 very much, and will probably get better at shooting with it over time. But the relationship I have with the Sexy One is different. It's personal.

I have owned several Fuji cameras, and now down to two, my XE-1, and XT-1. Both bought brand new, after about a year into production. One just needs to know how to shoot with the ‘Sexy One.’ Plain and simple.

      As Alex says, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but yours seems a bit off base to me, with regards to the XE-1. No, it’s not the fastest, newest, highest resolution 16K shooting machine.
      🙄 If used by someone that will take the time to learn how it works and what it can do and not do, it can produce some of the finest shots around.

    • @cameronrramos
      @cameronrramos 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@georgedavall9449 Yep it certainly is very capable and I’m sure folk have taken some great shots with them but for me the shortcomings (especially when paired with vintage lenses) was too much to overcome.
      Was mostly providing a different experience and a warning to others not to get gear lust over these (my opinion!) over hyped, older fuji sensors and bodies. For me it had potential to be a massive waste of money if I hadn’t been able to resell it for what I originally paid.

    Beautiful images, and excellent opinion from a users perspective. I've adapted my own Auto 110 lenses to my XT3 recently and found much the same thing- I love how they render. So much so, that I've been researching smaller cameras like the XE1 to create more of pocketable "on the go" setup.

    I have both the X-M1 & X-E1 for the original sensor, they are so cheap I thought it was a bit of a no brainer to have and keep them for the future as they become harder to find. I like to go out with 2 cameras a 24MP like the XPro2 or XE3 for speed and features plus one of the originals for the different look maybe with a vintage lens. X-E2 is my favourite older model.

    Lovely video and sample images. After road testing Fujifilm's system with the X-20 as my daily carry I quickly acquired an X-E1 as my first real digital Fujifilm with removable lenses, which came with the "kit" lens and the magical 35mm f/1.4. I've been hooked ever since, acquiring the X100S, X-T2, X-T3 and X-S10 along with various lenses. I use the X-T3 and X-S10 professionally for video work as the company has come a long way for hybrid shooters. But when I just want to grab a camera to wander around, or when I'm on holiday, I choose my X-E1 for that special something that its sensor offers.
    Little did I know when I first got the X-E1 that it would be considered a classic digital camera and become much prized (and appreciate in price) a decade later.

    Hey, happy to see you dwelve into the Fuji world !
    If you're searching for the best/weirdest sensors in Fuji cameras, I definitely suggest that you look at the original X100 from 2011, and the X10 from about the same era. It's not an X-Trans sensor like the later X100 cameras and other X mount cameras yet, but the colors are really different and the image quality is surprisingly good for a sensor this old.
    Also, since we're talking about old stuff, let's go a little older : Fujifilm S5 Pro, basically a Nikon D200 with a sensor swap. 10MP Super CCD sensor that not only has incredible colors, but also has a surprisingly high dynamic range for its age (it's still not close to modern standards, but it's way better than APS-C sensor were able to do at that time). Also it's super cheap for what it is.
    Talking about the X-E1 specifically, I like the fact that the camera is cheap and the colors are wonderful, but there was a few issues that I had with it that makes its successor just so much more worth it in my opinion. First, there is some film simulations missing that I've grown to love from later cameras, like Classic Chrome. Not the biggest issue mind you. My only real gripe is the fact that the focus peaking with manual lenses is white only. Meaning that if you're shooting during a bright sunny day, you're screwed cause you can't see what's in focus and what isn't. On that front, the X-E2 added colors to the peaking, like red, blue and yellow so that's one issue fixed.
    I WOULD like to recommend the X-E2, as it is basically the same camera just with teh X-Trans II instead of the X-Trans I (the difference between those two sensors is really marginal, the only notable difference that I've been able to spot was the fact that the X-Trans II has a slightly warmer tone, but I actually like that. Otherwise it has lower noise levels, better autofocus, and of course all the new film sims and features that the 2nd gen processor brings). But there is another X-Trans II camera that is around the same price (at least in my country) as the X-E2 and offers a LOT more features : The flagship of the time, the X-T1. Notable improvements over the X-E2 are : UHS-II card slot that is separated from the battery compartment, so you can burst with fast card without an issue. HUGE OLED EVF that is on par with modern EVF despite being from 2014, the EVF that made me forget DSLR OVFs for a while. Tilty screen. Better ergonomics (presence of an ISO dial, more buttons etc). Weather sealing (the camera is actually very rugged despite the small size)
    I've had many Fuji camera over the years (currently using an X-T2 as my main camera) but the X-T1 is for me the best camera in its pricepoint, by a long shot, I highly recommend you give it a try.

    • @snappiness
      @snappiness  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Both of those cameras really intrigue me - especially the X10 which has retained a lot of value (must be a reason!).
      Fujifilm's S Pro's have been in my watch alerts for a while. I definitely plan on picking one up eventually and trying it out. I have a special place in my heart for DSLRs :D
      That sound like huge upgrades for the X-E2 - the focus peaking I thought was actually quite good, and as I shot the camera the whole time with manual glass I relied on it heavily. The colors would be an upgrade there though. Everything else you're mentioning sounds great - and only for a marginal price increase on the used market.
      Thanks for the advice!

    • @matthieuzglurg6015
      @matthieuzglurg6015 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@snappiness the reason the X10 kept so much of its value is quite simple : The lens ! The lens on that camera is a jewel (something I can't really say about the X100's lens)

    If you can find an EF mount focal reducer, it is the perfect investment to pair with the X-E1. The EF among film cameras have one of the shortest flange distance a which can be adapted to a plethora of film lenses including PK, OM, and F meanwhile maintaining the FOV of 135mm film cameras.
    Another route to go, is adapting PEN-F film prime lenses, as they are the perfect match for APS sensors.

    Having just grabbed one as my first try at Fuji bodies, I see why people consider it the entry point! Within minutes I was getting fantastic JPGs SOOC. Barely touch them back on the workstation, which is the entire reason I wanted to get one.
    What really surprised me though is how perfect it feels in the hand. I have an a7Rii and A7c. I love them both and while I have to tell them to get out of the way a bit, they're amazing cameras. But the Fuji... It felt like picking up a piece of history. Sony is big tech in a camera form, the Fuji is absolutely a photography tool with a tech back end. You know a body is a good fit when you find yourself just wandering over to pick it up for no reason ha. Just like "dang, I love this little guy" 😂

      I've had mine since 2015 and out of camera JPEGs were the reason why I sold of my Canon gear and stuck with it for all these years - I simply didn't care about the bells and whistles, this little thing was doing everything I wanted. I got the 18-55 and 55-200, both amazing lenses, and the 27mm, which I barely used since it's not really my style. Other than that, I use an old Canon FD 50mm with an extension tube for vintage look and macro, and I'm doing just fine.

      @ I ended up having to return mine due to dead pixels that KEH missed. Luckily they make returns easy and I got to use it for a few months before sending it back. Great little camera, though. I really enjoyed it while I had it.
      I ended up getting a really really good deal on a first generation Lecia Q, though, so I never went back to the Fuji. The Leica does JPG straight out of camera really well too, but it comes attached to that brilliant Summilux 28/1.7 lens.
      I'm definitely going to pick up another X-E1 eventually too, though. I ride bikes/scooters around NYC and its the only camera I've ever used that you can totally dangle off your wrist going 25 mph in traffic ha.

    I used couple of Fuji the last one was the XE-2, I bought it mainly to try out the X-Trans sensor and it was very good, compared with my Pentax K3 the Fuji performed better especially in low light high ISO, and AF is fast, but I eventually gave up on Fuji for one reason, it was the handling. I found the Fuji was too light and front heavy due to lack of a usable grip and the "plasticky" build, even the top of the line including the media format model didn't quite match the Pentax. I felt physically tired using the Fuji, and the menu design was very slow and confusing to use, I heard XE-3 improved on that but I would not try again, and decided to stick with Pentax. Btw I don't like the fly-by-wire design of the lenses, I want positive and solid feedback Fuji doesn't have.

      @@snappiness The X-M1 was Fuji's toe into the consumer camera pool. Build quality isn't stellar, though mine has worked fine from new. It came with a 16-50 XC lens, kinda plasticky like the body, but decent image quality. I like in built flash on a compact camera, which the X-M1 has and the X-Pro1 lacks, and the tilt screen is useful. The lack of viewfinder, less so. They were never big sellers, and Fuji sold the kit off cheaply in the end, I paid £184 new, inc. lens. Being a former Pentaxian and now converted Fujierian, I have to agree with your last statement. The camera that tore me away from Pentax was the X-E2, which I still use as my everyday camera to this day. It is the same body as the X-E2, but has more film profiles (which are beautiful on the XTrans 2 sensor) and better auto autofocus. I haven't found a camera that beats the X-E2 in terms of 'feel' when you're using it. I do miss the large grip on my old, but still used K100D though! Fantastic camera to this day in the right lighting.

    I've never regretted selling the X-Pro1 and moving to the X-E1. The optical VF of the X-Pro1 did nothing for me. The Fuji lenses are indeed very good but, alas, Fuji AF I've found to be less good. Most of the time the AF is adequate, even if a bit slow, but on all the Fuji cameras I've owned, they could miss focus occasionally - which is annoying!

    I have the X-E3. Use it with vintage glass only. It has a good feel in the hand, but I think the x-trans III sensor is not good for vintage glasses generally. Because of the pixel density or sensor stack thickness (or both) some very fine and sharp vintage lenses look awful on it with ghosting, aberrations and blurry mess with the fine details (while the same lenses are suprisingly sharp on my A7S). It is is like not even the same lens, night and day difference (I am surprised that you don't really talk about this issue. I don't think I ever want to shoot manual glass on high megapixel smaller that full frame sensor from now on) Also the sensor has good iso performance but at the expense that basically looses nice colors at around iso 4000 and above even in the raw files. I would rather have more noise to retain more color information than have it removed. DXO ai denoise is stunning with removing noise, would rather use that for the purpose.
    It might be the case that the xtrans I and II are better with vintage lenses, that is why I am contemplating of trading my x-e3 for an X-T1 the only sensible option for me. (I hate the small evf on my x-e3).
    I really get the feel that a fuji gives you, but I personally think that the film simulations are over-hyped. Only Astia seems to be acceptable for me when it comes to skin tones, the rest never pleases me, I think lightroom has much better built in presets for any camera.
    So hopefully I can borrow an x-t1 for someone to see if I would want one.

    • @snappiness
      @snappiness  ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe it's just because the xtrans 1 was 16mp, so the pixel density is much lower? I do get that though. I use a lot of vintage glass on my 10mp APSC Pentax K10D, or in my FF k-1, but haven't really been fond of it on my higher megapixel APSC cameras. I never really made that connection before and I'm not sure if it's that or not. But interesting.
      In any case I was fond of these vintage lenses on the XE1. No complaints there.

      @@snappinessThat's kind of what I figured, but I'd seen a lot of people talk about the "filmic" look of the sensor or how it more closely resembles CCDs than the later sensors, so I figured you'd be the guy to ask. I think it's probably people's happiness with the camera and images expressing itself, more than it's actually reflected in image quality. I do agree that the XE1 is a great entry point into the system though since they can be easily had for around $300

    I sold my XE1 gladly. But those Pentax 110 lenses work better than Fujifilm lenses, which are too sharp, sterile looking and lack 3D pop. I found the XE1 to have alien feel in the ergonomics because I'm a Pentaxian. It really reminded me of a Nikon DSLR I owned once with most of the push buttons down the left side which is uncomfortable. I think there shouldn't be any buttons down the left side, even on my Pentaxes. Like review button and garbage can button on the left is annoying.
    So the button layout isn't good on the XE1, and one rear dial and no front dial was not good enough. I didn't mind the EVF which everyone 10 years ago complained about causing nausea, which isn't true, they were just averse to mirrorless cameras, that is until the autofocus became superior to dslr. The Q button was okay.
    In the hand it did not feel substantial and felt like I was going to drop it as I dropped another Fuji camera I sold earlier. You must do the strap wrap around the wrist trick on any early Fuji camera, they just want to fall out of your hands, as they're so light and slippery with virtually no grip. It is the wrong design and a bad design to not have a decent hand grip on an interchangeable lens camera. The Pentax K-S1 I own has a similar feeling on the grip which I should address, and a few times I felt I was going to drop it. Todays Fujis with IBIS are substantially larger than Pentax bodies with IBIS that can do Astrotracer and pixel shift, so I do not see where Fuji is going with its oversized designs. Perhaps the XT-1 was their best camera size - not too small and not too big.
    But forget Fuji, their lenses are too clinical and sterile, its a garbage system IMO. I'm sticking with Pentax for the 3D pop lenses with ambience, plus all the old vintage lenses to play with. Sure you can adapt it to mirrorless, but it feels fraudulent to me to put a Pentax lens on a Fuji or Sony camera. Like taking Subaru WRX wheels and putting them on an old Toyota Celica because it has 5x100 studs. Or putting Mitsubishi Evo wheels on a Nissan with the same stud pattern. I never liked it when the Canon dslr guys were buying old Pentax lenses and using the PK to EF adapter and hording plus driving up the prices of Pentax vintage lenses. Makes want to mod lenses.
