Prius only looks good on the outside (perhaps, which is very subjective), when it comes to practical use, price, interior design and dashboard, Kia Niro is the winner hands down.
I'm gonna have to disagree with you here. That side profile makes to car appear low slung and almost Lamborghini Huracan-like. It took some Italian design queues which is usually a good thing in my opinion. The Kia looks like a early 20teens super aggressive, excessive lines, sharp cuts nonsense that plagued the previous Prius model's designs for so long
The Prius looks really nice! The Kia isn't too bad but the vertical tail lights reminds me of the Focus hatchback from, oh, 25 years ago. Toyota on this one 👍. Thanks for video Sketch.
Ironically that’s a big selling point for me on the Niro - the tail lights aren’t a light bar. If I’m driving behind one at night, I know exactly what it is
This would have been my third Prius as of 2010 and 2016, both still in family, however as much as I like the body design I dislike the dash design so much I bought a 24 Kia Niro….53 mpg average and just over one inch more ground clearance. I hope they redo that dash in coming years…..especially the raised gauges in front of driver…
The comparison alone is an insult. How can you compare a Toyota to a Kia? In 10 years that Kia is going to be scrap metal, and the Toyota will be just fine.
I have come to learn over the past few years most people don't like the hatchback look. Idk why. Most like the impractical look of a sedan. I have heard them call weird and dorky looking. I think that's why the Civic Hatch has the look it does. I see them everywhere. Most common hatchback I personally see and probably the biggest seller. Honda knew the sloped rear appeals to a more sedan loving market. Crossovers are their own thing and seem to break the same reasoning. So my argument doesn't make much sense when you think about them.
7:30 the wierd roofline makes the whole car. It would look more like an econobox with a regular roofline. The shape makes it look expensive and special, like a car that costs twice as much.
The Kia looks a bit outdated and too SUV-ish for my taste. The graphic features will probably age not very gracefully. I m nicely surprised by the new Prius. Clean design, great graphics, especially in the front...and I love the roofline...very elegant and with a good dynamic flow. So, team Prius 100%
Based on styling alone definitely the Prius! I see what you’re saying about the roofline but I’m glad they did it that way. Also I disagree about the rear end, I think it looks perfect just as it is. The Kia is very good looking as well and there is nothing wrong with it (except maybe for the 2 spoke wheel), but the Prius is just gorgeous. This gives me high hopes for the new Camry, I hope they won’t disappoint me.
Damn the Niro is ugly! I appreciate Kia’s transformation just as much as anyone else, but the Niro, with its messy and random body lines, the rear of the EV6, and the Sportage are just not good looking. On the other hand, the Prius is very clean and organic, and looks expensive🔥
I'll be buying a Niro. I like the Toyota better but the fact is I am the type that refuses to pay above MSRP, and I can get a Niro PHEV at MSRP whereas I can not find any Toyota dealerships willing to sell a Prime for less that $7995 additional mark-up. When Toyota gets their dealerships and distribution back under control, I'd love to buy from them, but until that day comes, Ill buy from the Koreans.
I'm Team Niro. Even CR says the A-pillars on the Prius creates a blind spot because it's sloped too low. I'm in the market now for a 2024 Niro PHEV version (SX Touring). Great video!!!
fun fact: c-pillar in kia soul is actually an air vent. Air enters right behind rear doors, through the c- pillar and exits between rear lights and trunk window. Now more you know
Your roofline edit completely ruins the Prius, sorry. Toyota roofline is extremely low from a functional perspective . . . but the visual effect is stunning, sleek, clean, elegant. That said, the Niro in photos looks kind of convoluted. In person it's much better, sharper, than I expected. Volvo kind of vibe. I give Niro an 8, Prius a 10.
I'm sorry but moving the roof line forward on the Prius is uglier than sin. Looks way better with the roof line they went with. Car design rules be damned looks way sexier with their chosen design
I don’t like Toyotas and I’ve been a fan of the Koreans for a while. However, between the new Prius and Niro, the Prius would be my choice. I do like the Niro interior more, but the rest of the Prius outweighs it.
The Prius is way cool, but the Niro is way more practical. Especially for seniors, getting in and out of both the front and back seats. I bought a Niro PHEV and love it!!
Looks like you compared the Kia Niro EV to the Prius hybrid. The display is more digital, and a conventional gear shift in the kia hybrid vs the rotary in the Kia EV, and hp is significantly different between the two hybrids. Would need to compare the driving experience also. We have the 2024 Toyota Prius hybrid limited and love it. Thanks for posting!
I wouldn't be surprised that being the real reason cause generally the concept shapes don't translate into production. Also imo the roofline isn't something i see as a rulebook definition of concern....a spacious interior will suffice for the odd roofline. He was going a bit much on that.
Not too sure about Kia hybrid cars… I think Prius is a better choice of hybrid car due to its rep… I rather give Kia time to perfect their hybrid before even consider buying one
I like them both Also I feel like people who would hate the Niro are probably the same people who say, "ALL CROSOSVER ARE BLAND AND BORING AND LOOK THE SAME" It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it certainly isn't boring to look at. I think I would go for the Prius because I have always liked them. Not the last gen really, but this looks amazing. I would be scared of long term ownership because of the battery however. Toyotas make good hybrids but eventually it will crap out and be a ton to replace.
I'll pick Prius just because it has established a good reputation for longterm reliability. It is not uncommon that some Priuses can reach 500k miles. kia is actually catching up really fast, but it still needs time to prove to the customers that their cars are equally as reliable as Toyota
Thank you for using red cars (anything but black, gray, or white). For a fairer comparison, you should've used the optional wheels on the Niro. The license plate mount on the Prius ruins the sleek face.
I have to disagree, the Prius roof line looks better as is. Moving the height of the roof forward makes the car more traditional and less special. I prefer it to be more sleek and sporty. What would be nice if it had flush glass with the B and C pillars like a Tesla. Though I assume it would make the car more expensive.
Kia Niro, without any doubt! All the way! Niro offers a much better driving experience, due to the DSG gearbox. Also, the dash board is nice at Niro... At Prius it looks like you bought a tabled and glued it over the dashboard!!!
And don't get me wrong, the Prius isn't any better but at least it hides it. That Niro looks so proud that it has such bad rear visibility that it has two tone paint on it.
My dilemma is that the new Prius looks slick, and has the Toyota name and reliability but no vents or charger for the back seat passenger. However the highest trims (limited) gets you that classy glass roof and sun roof feature. Niro seems to be more spacious and has vents and chargers for the back seat passengers, however even at the highest trim, no sun roof. Also Kia doesn’t have the style. 😵💫 first world problems I know … tough to pick for me. It seems a lightly used niro is far cheaper than a used Prius as well.
Prius all the way! Important to note that the purpose of the roofline is to make the car more aerodynamic and improve in mpg. The Niro to ME looks a bit… boring… like like I’ve seen that design way too much before or like any other small SUV. The Prius feels like a head turner.
The Prius has an ugly flat, projecting license plate mounting point on the front fascia that's molded in. (Not shown on your photos.) You're stuck with it whether you need it or not.
Niro - don’t think turn signals down on the rear bumper or even lower on some cars is a good idea. Prius - don’t like that weird info screen behind the steering wheel under the big slanted windshield, wondering if driver can actually read it while driving under direct sunlight above.
We have the 2024 Prius Hybrid and no problems with the display at all sunlight or obstruction. But, you can't drive with your hand at 12 o'clock, that would obstruct your view of the display.
On the Niro you have at least 1 tiger nose: on all variants, it's the windshield where the roof- and hoodlines eat a little into it, and on the EV variant there is the grille as well.
For me, the Prius front end is almost there, but not quite. It's almost a straight line from the front nose to the top of the A-pillar. Good for aerodynamics but it's not a sports car and it takes way from utility and headspace... It's not bad. Maybe redo this and compare it to a Kia EV6 EV. That's probably a closer comparison as both are "not traditional" (whereas the Kia Niro might be considered a more traditional SUV).
Who would have guessed that there would ever be a design discussion between a Kia and a Prius. The design does something to you and that's already a big win for me. Imagine Toyota would have taken it a bit further on this design. Bit more like the concept. That would really make my day but the evolution from the previous generation to this has to be applauded.
New prius looks to me similar to the mazda 3 hatchback. Love the clean lines on both designs even though I'm not a huge fan of either brand. The front lights of the prius spoil it for me.
Prius looks so much better than before...but I now understand why it simply looked odd with the roofline... Makes complete sense and I like your photoshopped version so much more than the production version. Agree with the saggy tail end as well. I think the new Niro looks nicely balanced and I thought you might mention the 2-tone from the Audi R8 'blade'. Anyways, great review as always.
