- Both the 2022 Kia EV6 and the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 start at around $40k.
Both ride on the same modular platform and can be equipped with the same 77.4-kWh battery pack and both offer Level 3 DC fast-charging.
The Kia EV6’s sleeker design over the Ioniq 5 gives it a bit of an advantage in range at 310 miles for the Kia versus 303 for the more retro Ioniq 5.

Def Ioniq 5, just because it's edgy and original, hatchback proportions, retro -inspired design , and doesn't look like a typical bean shaped EV
I mean, car reviewers compared the Ioniq 5 to the Lancia Delta Integrale so that's a big win for Hyundai
Both look like concept cars. Ultimately, my preferences lead me to wanting the EV6 more than the ioniq 5. That being said, I think I could argue the ioniq 5 has the better design.
The EV6 looks great imo. I'm surprised that people don't like it that much.

Seeing it in real life, it looks cooler than the ioniq 5. But the ioniq 5 still looks amazing, just somehow less eye catching.
There are two philosophies; I better like my EV6 as it reflects Great European Cars, such as Lancia or Peugeot RCZ you might not know . But also some Jaguar E-Type, just sexy curvy car with a round but. After all that mess of SUV-Boxes that is really refreshing. Tesla just went on with a modern Jaguar-Design, which is Fine but Not really innovative and different. Hyundai Group went for an old and at the same time newly interpreted design Language which makes EV attraktive and different. Back to the future in some way, such as Ioniq 6 also. This is definitely for individualists and not the indifferent Masses. Like an Artwork from Klee, Kandinsky or Poliakoff, it must not please everybody and the price makes the Rest.
The front end of the hyundai looks like a european 8th gen honda civic hatchback
PLEASE convert Hyundai IONIQ 5 into a sedan, I'm really curious of how it might look like if the IONIQ 6 had IONIQ 5 styling.

I mostly prefer the muscular organic style of the Kia EV6 GT over the boxy Hyundai ioniq 5 but I believe they both look very attractive design wise.
They took inspiration from the Hyundai Pony instead of the VW Golf. It was shown in one of the sketches you showed
The console in the Ioniq 5 is shaped this way because its second part can slide back, which allows rear passengers to have a small table and the front occupant to get in the vehicle from any side they want.
Ioniq 5 definitely looks better. Minimalism really works here. Kia on the contrary is pole apart, to me it's not a futuristic design but the messed that could have been avoided.
Not going to lie, when I saw for the first time the white Ioniq5 I thought "Damn, thats how a future car looks like"

The design of the ionic amazes immediately but in the long run. instead the Kia after seeing it live you fall in love with it and it doesn't tire you with the passage of time.

Ioniq 5 would be my choice, its weird in a good way, Interior wise the integration of the screens in that silver frame makes it look tidier, however I think its the a/c vents design and surroundings , that makes it look like a washing machine. Hyundai tries to stand apart from the now defined EV shapes, while Kia is playing safe with what they did, but both have better designs and enjoying the playfulness you can get from electric platforms.
The ioniq 5 interior killed it for me. Looks cheap and doesn't match the car. Ioniq 5 exterior and EV6 interior would be my choice also

Hats off to Hyundai and Kia for giving us such different designs on the same platform. I'm torn between the two as I like different things about both.
The EV6 looked awkward to me when I 1st saw it in pics. I think maybe it takes time to get uses to but to me it's the more futuristic and premium looking inside.
The Ioniq 5 screen inside is very product design going against the black bezel like the latest iMac. It always makes me think it could have been a car in the original Robocop films in a gd way. I wish the designers of the new Delorean had seen it and realised you can lean more into the retro futurism .
Both of them have their distinctive, unique style, love it.
For most of your comparison videos I know what car you will pick before even clicking the thumbnail but man for these 2 I gotta admit I am not sure at all what will you go for.
But personally I'd choose the IONIQ 5, because of its totally different and crazy styling and proportions, I mean who doesn't want pixel lightning on their car.
Great comparison, I love the deep dive into the designs. One other thing I was thinking of was the posture between the two profiles (e.g. @6:10). The Ioniq 5 seems to be crouching forward, and the EV6 leaning back. Makes me think of the posture of someone riding a sport bike vs a Harley.
The best way to describe these is:
Ioniq 5 - Blade Runner
EV6 - Blade Runner 2049

As a Design enjoyer, I like the Ioniq 5 more, it's just so unique, but as a Car and Car Design enjoyer, I like the EV6 more, it has very non-classic proportions and very simple yet very futuristic graphics, and no, I do not want any EV to look like a standard ICE car and proportions, I want it to look different, that's the entire point on EV design to me, look non ICE but not like the EQS Blob
Having test driven both cars, I totally agree with your conclusion. EV6 GT Line seats are great too btw.
We're buying an EV6 GT Line S AWD in black. So yummy in real life! V2L feature on both cars is great too.

Both are amazing cars to look at and drive - the two best looking EVs by a mainstream manufacturer imo (and this includes even the Teslas). Really exciting stuff coming out from Hyundai / Kia / Genesis. Keep up the amazing work!
That last statement is most people's wishes I bet including mine. The I5 looks futuristic on the outside but not so much on the inside imo.
Both are great looking cars but with its own unique flavour and it would be hard for me to choose one over the other (the slight edge going to the Ionic 5).
The Genesis GV60 is also built on the same platform but is priced much higher and would be nice to include this in this comparison, though I’m not a fan of the bulbous exterior styling of the GV60, but its more luxurious and elegant interior is definitely the one to have.
BTW, the Ionic 5 looks to be heavily influenced by the Lancia Delta from the 1980s (not so much a VW) which was never sold in North America, which was a hot hatch at the time.
As a kid, I always longed for the 73 Opel GT, I think my EV6 WIND is the closest I'm going to get :)

Ironically, even though it's the more modern of the two, the EV6 interior reminds me of the dash/interior of the 1984 Mitsubishi Starion I once owned. I can appreciate Ioniq 5 interior, but I'm not a fan of the plastic silver bits everywhere.
I love both exteriors, ....the Ioniq 5 has a bold retro future look, and the EV6 has almost a French boldness, like it could easily be a Renault or Citroen design.
I wish the EV6 interior came in the Ioniq 5, that would be my first choice, but since it doesn't, my nod goes to the EV6.

We made the opposite decision, preferred the sleeker exterior of the EV6.
I have to agree with you.
Both need to fix their brake light issue with regen braking. It’s a serious safety issue. The other manufacturers have. I’m waiting till a recall or voluntary fix before I buy.

The EV6 is so ugly IRL. I call this kind of EVs tanks because they are devoid of any classic car proportions. I don't like it at all. The Ioniq 5 is still oversized for a hatchback but it could definitely be a classic hatchback if you scaled it down by 5-10% or so.

This video is OLD!! Needs to be updated since iONIQ 5 N has been announced and it will have more power (600+) than the EV6 GT!
On the street the Kia looks way better than the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Somehow, the Ioniq 5 lacks in absolute presence on the street and I think it has to do with the choice of colours available. The colours don’t do justice to the design.

Strange how the ioniq 5 transports you to the golf. For me its definitely a through back to the Lancia Delta. In terms of exterior design I prefer the Hyundai, no doubts about it. Interior though... Kia.
The EV6 "dynamic" Design just doesn't work. It has such incredibly ugly proportions that graphics and lines don't work.

The EV6 is one of the strangest, and by argument, ugliest EVs to come out recently in my opinion. The proportions and design choices are very strange and all in all it's not very Kia at all. And in comparison to the Ioniq 5, it stands no chance.

Not a fan of either design really. The Kia exterior has lost it's impact 6 months in and the Hyundai is an abomination in my opinion
