Oh my gosh. I'm a crocheter trying to teach myself to knit. I have watched about a dozen of these cast-on videos and was starting to think I would NEVER learn how to do it. Thank you so much for a clear, simple way to cast on Maybe I'll be a knitter yet!
Very good demonstration! I learned to knit 60 years ago! lol We were taught this method by saying a little rhyme. "In through the bunny hole, round the wee tree, out through the bunny hole and off goes she."
I just can't tell you how much this video has helped me. This is exactly what I needed and have been unable to find until now. You've save me from swearing like a sailor again.
Thank you for slowing it down to a real beginner's level! I am 46, with another diagnosis with cancer and lots of time of thinking....I have wanted to try this for some time now. A good friend at my church has been showing me but she did the casting on and I wanted to try a project on my own....thank you!
By golly gee...I've got it!!! You may have thought this was too slow when making this video but this is PERFECT for me. Thank you for "dumbing it down"
I cried, due to frustration, took a break, came back; I have 12 stitches casted! whew. Could not have done it without you! Grateful to find your channel.
Just came over from another video that had me throwing my needles away in frustration. This is actually understandable, even if I am still super-clumsy (I still can't handle both needles and the yarn without one slipping). Thanks!
Best video ever, thank you so much. I have watched so many videos, after watching this one I have finally got it. You are the best. So simple, you are a great teacher.
This video was so perfect! Thank you! I have watched family members do it, other videos but this is by far the best! A finally did my first row of 31 as that's how many I needed and I'm so proud and so thankful, once again thanks!
Welcome to the knitting community. I'm so glad my video helped you get started. Please keep watching and learning and please like me on my facebook page too.
Hi Judy! I knit/crochet on and off so I always need a refresher course when I start a new project. I tend to try out different tutorial videos but I find myself always coming back to yours. Hope they stay here forever. :) And thank you!!!
Judy, My mother is terminally ill. I am constantly trying to find things for her to do to keep her spirits up. She used to do the most extraordinary knitting projects. She agreed to try knitting again but was having trouble remembering how to cast on. I do lots of different types of crafts but never learned how to knit so I couldn't help her. Last night I found your video and successfully casted on the first 43 stiches. She was thrilled. So there you go, your video helped to give my mother another reason to live. Thank you very, very much.
You can do it. It just takes practice. I recommend walking away from it when you get frustrated, then come back to it later. At some point it will just click.
I tried with metal needles and it didn't work for me, I'm very stubborn when it comes to stuff and I have to do it until its correct and looking the way its suppose to. I decided to buy bamboo needles since everyone says they are easier to use and doesn't slide as much as the metal.
thank you sooooo much. an hour later i finally found someone to teach me to cast on. ive been crocheting for a year and a half now. i want to learn to knit so this is my 1st lesson ;)
This is the first time I've attempted to knit since my grandma passed away; growing up she would always cast on for me. Thank you so much for your patience and calm instructions. I will definitely be checking out your other videos.
I am in a similar situation, my nan taught me how to knit, crochet and sew when I was 6, however she would always cast on and cast off for me, she sadly passed away when I was 12, I still kept knitting and would get help from her sister, my great aunty who sadly passed away late last year, then when I was abit older I felt ready to learn how to cast on but then I suffered a traumatic brain injury and never learnt, this video is exactly the way my nan cast on and even on occasions would try to show me and teach me, I just felt it too confusing for some reason, today marks the day she passed away and first time in almost 10 years since my first tbi I feel ready to pick up knitting again, I hope you have managed to learn how to cast on and start knitting again, I'm sure your grandma will be so proud of you for picking up knitting again and learning to cast on
@@tvaholicsquidney - Oh my goodness, this actually made me tear up. Firstly, I am so very sorry for the loss of both your grandmother and great aunt. One of my favorite great aunts (my grandmothers sister-in-law) passed away maybe 8 years ago and I was utterly devastated by it. I also have trauma-related cognitive issues so found knitting both very soothing, but also very frustrating because I would forget whether I was doing the knit or purl stitch halfway through a row. My first attempt at a scarf is a little wonky, but I'm going to embroider a bit on it and use it as a wall hanging tapestry. Your kindness has motivated me to start again, so thank you so much for that. I hope you're having the best day you can, friend.
@@evrichardson6995 Hi Ev, thank you for your kind words, I'm sorry about the loss of your great aunt, I hope you are remembering the good times you two had together. I just thought I'd check in to see how you have got on, I'm going to be honest I sort of forgot and only remembered yesterday when I saw my bag of wool I'd got and the new knitting needles I'd got from my local knitting shop, these new ones are the ones I'd used for years and I'd learnt on the metal ones and using bamboo didn't feel the same so am going to try and do some knitting tomorrow and hope for the best with the new metal knitting needles I'd got (I got two pairs and when they knocked together I just was transported back to when I was a young child sat next to my nan knitting away hearing the sound of the metal knitting needles hitting each other, it made me smile), I'm going to try and crochet a blanket as well however not going to put too much on my shoulders and just start off relatively slow by knitting a scarf in the griffindor colours of harry potter, I understand about the frustrating about forgetting which type of stitch you are on, I hope you manage a way around this, my nan used to have the knitting pattern (written and bought) and would put something (that didn't roll) on said pattern and would move it down everytime she went to the next stitch/row, this way she wouldn't forget which line/stitch she was doing at that time, it also helped when she was mid way through and had to go sort tea/dinner out, hope this helps yourself out, I'd use either a ruler or maybe a safety pin if you have any and that way you put the safety pin over said line, when you finish move it down so you can see inside the safety pin which line/row/stitch you are currently on, hope you are well and staying safe, take care, siobhan.
@@tvaholicsquidney Hi Siobhan, thank you so much for checking up on me. It was my grandma's birthday the end of October and that was really rough; I don't feel ready to be without her, and yet it has somehow already been almost three years? I had a really big cry and it helped me feel a bit lighter. The Gryffindor scarf sounds like a great project, and I will definitely look into getting knitting patterns with the safety pin! How are you holding up? Are there any other sounds that make you think of your nan or your great aunt? Take good care, Ev.
I think you are a lovely lady for taking YOUR time to try and teach people how to knit. All the haters and people saying nasty things should shut their mouths and be respectful enough to realise that maybe THEY are just too "Simple" to "get it." Keep up the lovely work :)
I have no idea why people would downvote this video. It's one way of casting on, and frankly it's a very simple and easy way for beginners to learn. If it doesn't work for you, or you don't care for it, move on. Downvoting is unnecessary, isn't it? Much love to you Judy!
I watched about 15 - 20 tutorials and there were several ways on how to create the slip knot and cast on. This was by far the best one as easiest one to learn on how to do it. I like cross stitching and thought I would try knitting. I’m a 47 year old man and am bored with this Coronavirus homebound period. Thanks for your time and video!
Thank you for your video. I was taught to knit in home economics class in 1979 and had forgotten how to cast on. I was surprised to learn there are several techniques to cast on. After a watching a dizzying array of videos, thank goodness, your instruction matched the way I was originally taught.
Excellent tutorial. I haven't knitted in 64 years (went the crochet route). Now that I'm older, I wanted to knit again and your video was just what I needed. Thank you. On to the knit stitch.
I am a new knitter and I really like this video! I watched it once before trying it and paused it while I am learning. I like how you show how to hold the yarn and needles. Now on to learn the knit stitch!! Thank you!!
Using my husband's PC, but just wanted to say that this video is excellent! I've been knitting for years, self taught and hate casting on. Watching this video, very precise, has helped me to see where I was making my mistake. One note, when you say pull the need to the front, note that the need comes under the loop you've created. That's where I used to mess up and my first loop was always twisted, But you have helped immensely!
My grandma recently passed away and she was one heck of a knitter. She could do anything, and super fast. I knitted a lot as a child because YARN is amazing and I really wanna pick it up again as a memory of her :) this totally jogged my memory on how to cast on , thx
Thanks so much for this Judy, it really makes sense to me. I am a returning knitter and didn't want to keep asking friends to help me get started. Now I've seen your video, I feel confident to try it for myself.
I just found your video and I wanted to thank you. I taught myself to knit 30 yrs. ago but got so frustrated with the cast on method the book taught me, with the 2 long strands, I gave up. I could never figure out how much to leave on the tail end to cast on the amount of stitches I needed. Now I'm back and trying to learn new methods. I'm so glad I found your's.
Thank you for this video! My 7 year-old son, who learned to finger knit about a year ago, has been wanting to learn how to knit with needles. After watching several other videos with no success, this video was finally the ticket! Thank you for taking the time to teach knitting!
I have known how to crochet for years. I wanted to learn how to knit too. Most of the books and the patterns talked about casting on so many but wouldn't explain it. This is a wonderful video for beginners!!!!
I took a formal knitting class about a week ago but could not retain everything enough to continue at home. With your helpful instructional videos I did not give up. I especially like your slow version of casting on. Thank you.
I;m so glad to know my videos have halped you. Please keep watching and learning. Subscribe to my youtube channel to see all the videos when they are posted every tuesdayl Happy knitting.
I just can't thank you enough! I learned to knit years and years ago when I was in Girl Scouts (Brownies, actually!) and I made a simple scarf, earned my badge, then never knitted again, shamefully. Now that I'm older, I've been wanting to take up knitting as a hobby, but I couldn't remember how to cast on. This is *just* how I learned to do it all those years ago. I knew it as soon as I saw your demonstration. Thank you very, very much!
Thank you so much for this! Used to knit with my grandmother and she always cast on for me, so when I came to doing it myself I was stumped! Really helpful video, has helped me get back into knitting 😊
I have been trying for days to learn how to cast on. Yesterday I had an older woman tell me that I should just give it up. I didn’t; this morning with Judy’s slow method I have no problem and I finished casting on now I just have to figure out what else to do. It’s a great tutorial
I'm a teacher and I use this method. It's great and this video was excellent as it allowed students a return reference point to hel themselves. Not complicated and beautifully explained. Thanks so much :D!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I was on the verge of giving up, after going through so many videos and 'how-to' tutorials. But I got it now! Thanks to you! :) You are by far the best tutorial, in terms of ease and simplicity.
This is very similar to how I learned to knit many years ago. I am starting to get back into it. All those lovely knits in the series Outlander are making me want to knit a cozy cowl. Great video. Speed was perfect.
i am back judy i watched your videos a few years ago during a knitting phas. well it is time to knit again so i remembered how clear your video was. thank you
Hi Judy. Just wanted to say thanks very much. I learnt the basics years ago with a grandparent and I recently picked up a pair of needles for the first time in a very long time. I couldn't work out where I was going wrong but after watching a couple of your videos and starting from scratch I've got the hang of it in just a few minutes!
✔️👍👏😃I am so happy that I found this video! I bought a book off of a well-known website that caters to women in their 20s on up. I was given a code to take a free how to class that they host on their website. I chose the knitting one. I swear I must've watched the casting off part 10 times and I could not understand what the heck she was talking about or even doing! So I decided to Google casting off and I just picked your video first because it said that it was the slow version. I watch the video one time without doing anything and then a second time with my yarn and needles ready to go. As I am typing this I have already done about 25 stitches! I'm a leftie. Thought it would complicate matters but it didn't. Thank you so much !
you are an amazing teacher. thank you and all the negative ppl obviously dont know how to follow instrustions. REALLY!!!! ITs so simple and easy, keep the videos coming ur great
Wow, thank you! I have recently picked up knitting (even joined a knitting club at work) but I'm extremely bad at knots and how to navigate my needle. I have read so many tutorials but nothing beats a video that explains the step very slowly. Also, the way you transfer the knot from the right to the left needle is perfect! I have read tutorials that require you to take out the needle, and start again, which is a little bit hard for me because my yarn gets frayed... :) Thanks again for the extremely patient video :D
Thanks Judy! I just started knitting today for the first time and you've made it really easy to follow along. Cannot wait to see what creations I can knit!
I've been crocheting about six years, and I'm trying to learn how to knit. I like the look of knit better but it was always intimidating. My grandmother taught me the basics many many years ago, but I forgot everything. I got this on my third try, we'll see how I go! Thank very much.
You are always my go-to for this cast on you are awesome I love your voice it's so smooth and calming thank you for all your tips and tricks you're very much appreciated
Oh my goodness, THANK YOU for this video! Your instructions for how to transfer the new loop back to the left needle are what finally just made casting on click for me. I'm very excited right now!

Now that I'm older, I've been wanting to take up knitting as a hobby, but I couldn't remember how to cast on. This is *just* how I learned to do it all those years ago. I knew it as soon as I saw your demonstration. Thank you very, very much!
Watched multiple videos until I found this one and got it right away, well done.
Yaaay. After 40 years and a very frustrated grandmother and mother trying to teach me . ..I have actually managed to cast on! Thank you so much.
Well, patience pays off. Have fun knitting now. Please subscribe and like my facebook page. New video today.
Why, thank you, Judy! What a treat. You are giving the best gift of all-knowledge. Teachers are the real superheros. Where's your cape?
You won't believe how many videos I watched tonight trying to cast on! You speak my language! Thank you!
Perfect for me! I've never done any knitting before and this was a great pace without having to rewind because of all the repetition.
Thank you for the lovely comment. Glad to hear from you.
Thank you so much! I was frustrated all day until I found this video! Now I am enjoying this!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
Thank you! Thank you! This is how my grandmother taught me to cast on. Its been 30 years since I've tried to cast on. This was very well explained.
REALLY!!!! ITs so simple and easy, keep the videos coming ur great
thanks for your videos Judy, the easiest to understand. Finally, I found someone to teach me!
Thanks again for the extremely patient video :D
Thank you...very easy to follow. I have crocheted for years, but I want to learn to knit and this video makes casting on very easy to understand.
Thanks Judy! I just started knitting today for the first time and you've made it really easy to follow along. Cannot wait to see what creations I can knit!

Thank you. Now I have the confidence to get started with my simple little project. I haven't knitted since I was a child.
I've been crocheting about six years, and I'm trying to learn how to knit. I like the look of knit better but it was always intimidating. My grandmother taught me the basics many many years ago, but I forgot everything. I got this on my third try, we'll see how I go! Thank very much.
Congratulations and welcome to the knitting community, Please keep watching, subscribe and like me on facebook. Happy knitting!
Finally! Someone who gets the kind of demonstration I need! Thank you SO much!
You are always my go-to for this cast on you are awesome I love your voice it's so smooth and calming thank you for all your tips and tricks you're very much appreciated
Thank you for the lovely comment.. I hope you're having fun knitting. New video today.
Best video ever for learning the cast on. THANKS Bunches, Judy.
This video is by far the best and I use it every year when I start knitting. Thank you.
Thank you. I'm glad my video helps you.
Oh my goodness, THANK YOU for this video! Your instructions for how to transfer the new loop back to the left needle are what finally just made casting on click for me. I'm very excited right now!
