My current take is that if you’re generally satisfied and fulfilled, aging will be less scary and undesirable. But if you’re generally unsatisfied with your life for any reason, you feel like aging is slowly taking away your opportunity to change that.

I agree! I love aging. My body doesn’t so much. But I feel more myself, more comfortable, more patient, wiser, less concerned with what others think. And as a middle aged woman I am no longer an interesting commodity, so I get to be invisible and not feel targeted by men on the prowl and that’s AWESOME!

And now you know how 80% of us regular guys felt in our teens, 20s, 30s, 40s, and even 50s. Not that I'm complaining too much, but I do find it funny when women get to that point and still don't realize that that is the everyday lived experience of the vast majority of men. Aging is inevitable , so if we don't want it to suck, the key is to start now with taking care of ourselves. Stop smoking, start walking and lifting weights and eat more vegetables. And stay in touch with your friends.
As a 46 year old woman going through menopause most of the time I do not give a f. I do still care about some things. I workout to not become my elderly mom.
Very timely. Turned 36 this year, I grew up with my grandparents and one of them passed away last year. I'm visiting them right now, and seeing my grandma grow older and more frail every month is a bit painful, but it's still comforting to be reminded that in the meantime, there are some good things to look forward to :)

I’m so old I remember living overseas not only with poor cell phone service, but no cell phone at all. Sure, they were out, but it wasn’t something the everyday person had. And they were basically the same size as your home phone. Which meant they didn’t fit into your pants pocket, even if you wore extremely baggy pants.
I'm so old, I remember telephones made out of wood and whatever that indestructible plastic was, hanging on the wall in the kitchen, and if you needed to make a call, you had to a) pick up the receiver and hold it to your ear to see if any of the party line was on (they usually were), b) bust in and say "operator, I've got an emergency and need Doc Benson out here at the Snodgrass place," or c) ask the party to hold on so you can make an urgent call. So there. I also remember the first mobile phones that were actually shaped like a telephone receiver, were they were physically connected to the transceiver in the trunk - and took up a lot of room in that trunk.

As a 50yo fellow beard-wearer, I approve of everything said in this video. Though to be honest, I have never given a f about lawn care, much to the disappointment of my neighbors, certainly. I miss being bored, don't remember the last time i experienced true boredom. There's so much to do all the time and there's so much that I want to do but don't.
Hey there, 43 also. I am finally feeling the pleasant calmer winding down vibe. Had a bunch of childhood emotions boil up to be felt last year and needed to start using breathwork to chill out. Now I just accept that I need to do breathwork every day and practice acceptance and gratitude or I become a cynical asshole. I use an HRV pattern with a slightly longer exhale for parasympathetic boost, 5\1.5\7\1.5. Really works to chill me out and feel more positively about life and the world and working patiently towards goals. I spent a lot of years complaining about everything, seeing so much from a negative perspective. I don't have some grandiose plan to change the world, but maybe I can make things better in small ways simply by not spewing my bad vibes into the mix. Perhaps even producing some regenerative healing vibes here and there with gardening and bushcraft and helping others.
I'm not sure when I stopped trying to fix the world. But it sure is nice now to give up trying. I agree with that part about letting people think they are right. As long as it doesn't directly affect something I care about, such as my income or outgo.
About the being comfortable not arguing. I've found that arguing is just an evolution of our ancient physical combat. It's attempting to change someone by force, in which both have evolved through generations to build defenses to those attacks. Sure it works, but the benefits are ever decreasing, now it's like a 1% gain for 100% risk. I've found it's much better to educate. Most of the time you won't change a person with just one discussion. But you've planted the seed. And that doesn't always make you right either. You may be wrong. But it's the other person's duty to find evidence to the contrary. If you're wrong they will find contradictory evidence. If not, they won't. If everybody starts doing this, and rejecting bad info, we'd get to the truth quicker than through verbal combat. =================== A personal example of this is in the past people used to argue with me about how US prisons are terrible, focusing on repeat offenders to keep the system going which includes slave labor. We would both argue. Until I watched a video of a warden of the Norwegian Halden prison explaining logically, without snark remarks how their prison system is set up logically to reduce crime and rehabilitate offenders so the general public remains safer. Completely changed my worldview than any online argument could. ============================= And that also leads into shame. Shame is not useful, guilt is. But we often confuse the two as the same and often shame people thinking we're just making them feel guilt. Shame makes a person withdraw. The opposite of what you want. Guilt makes a person reflect.

You used examples of envy, not jealousy. Homer Simpson using his wise old age explained it like this: "I'm not jealous. I'm envious. Jealousy is when you worry someone will take what you have. Envy is wanting what someone else has. What I feel is envy." Great video though! Keep up the good work! I'm envious of your work ethic, talent and creativity.
So there is a documented thing that overall life happiness dips for many people in their 40s, but then the good news is that it bounces back again in your 50s! I don't remember why the researchers thought that was, but I'm assuming it has to do with a changing social life (e.g. having kids or deciding not to have kids), getting used to getting older, and reckoning with some of your past choices
For me, no one's born perfect. Most of what Wheezy described is not about getting old, it's part of (some of us) learning to improve. In my eyes, getting old is just bad. Lets admit it. Your body declines, your mind declines. Your loved ones decline and pass away. It's important to acknowledge that getting old is just bad in order to properly understand how important it is to live to as full of an extend as possible while you're younger. Both your legs work well? Do nature hikes or challenge your running skills. Your mind's sharp? Join a debate team, pick up stand up comedy or whatever.. Build good memories for years you're unfit and unable. You don't want to get there with unfulfilled dreams and regrets.
One of the reasons I like you, Weezy, is that we are exactly the same age. Well....we're both 43 right now. One of the things I appreciate about getting old is that I increasingly feel part of an exclusive club of people the same age as me. This club has life experiences the align more closely to mine. We all experiences the rise of the internet at roughly the same age. Most of us probably know what Top Trumps (in the uk, at least) are, we are familiar with the same adverts that were on tv when we were kids - basically we have the same cultural touchstones. I didn't feel that connection to this group in my twenties and thirties, but now I'm increasingly aware of it, and it pleases me.
I am coming up on 40 pretty fast now, and the F---s are definitely not coming with me. I'm all about sunscreen and veggies now (which basically means past-me would think I've been body snatched) just entering settling into not needing to correct people caring if they give me dirty looks. 10/10.
knowing stuff is great ! talking to someone and they mention snowboarding - i can do that now we can chat ! (i learnt at 25 years old) , someone talks about wedding photography i used to do that as a job when i was 20 ! someone talks about rockclimbing i know about that now i joined a climbing gym at 21 years old , 3d modelling / CAD I love it as a hobby , clinical trials? I was in one ... I am only 30 but the amount of random stuff i know make life more fun. i thought i knew everything at 18 . Do stuff and being old is great . Also feeling like I have more to offer the world than being a "good looking young girl "is great . I never had a horse in that race anyway but i felt like it was the only thing people cared about from 13-25 years old . Also years feel really short . which has upsides . Someone tells you it will take 3 year to do something ? meh no biggie . 18 year old me could not commit to stuff a week ahead ....

I do not lament getting older. Many of my friends were denied the opportunity, I respect each day with that in mind. And on a lighter note, I lived hard in my youth and now I’m all about being fitter, healthier and stronger. I turn 49 in three days. I’m wearing old clothes I put away in my early 20’s. I quit drinking and weight just dropped and I feel pretty great. Actually, I don’t think I’ve felt this good in decades to be honest. My aches and pains have gone away mysteriously. Could be diet, could be exercise, could be weight loss, or a combination of all of them, but I ain’t complaining. Neither is the missus 😂
Im 33, so not quite at the "my back hurts" age just yet.. But, having spend most of my life in an office chair, it was starting to catch up with me a year or so ago, hip pain, starting to see weight gain and such... Decided to take care of myself a lil more and it was honestly super easy once I figured out how. It's amazing how actually using your body can fix a lot of ones' small issues.

i think you confuse jealousy and envy. Envy is when you want what someone else has, but jealousy is when you're worried someone's trying to take what you have.
I'm 32 (not old by any means) and the best thing about it is not having to worry about turning 30 anymore😂 people make such a big deal about it. But I'm financially better off, my mental health is better, and I'm more sure of myself at 32 than I was at 22. I don't stress as much about work. I don't get harassed as much by creepy men as the street. Getting older is so freeing!
I'm not ok getting older. I'm always bored, I'd like to be surprised. I'd like to be allowed to make mistakes instead of being expected to know everything. I'm tired of not GAF. I want to feel like something is worthwhile

Everyone has been telling me thaty back will hurt by 27, 29, 30, 32, etc. It's still kicking and no problems. Thank god my genetics are helping with the exercise. Rock climbing is an A+. Going to ride this train as long as I can. It's either that or I have no low level pain. I've never had a headache. Thank you mom and dad haha.

As a 50yo fellow beard-wearer, I approve of everything said in this video. Though to be honest, I have never given a f about lawn care, much to the disappointment of my neighbors, certainly. (But I don't give a f about that either.) And as my father-in-law is fond of saying: getting older is better than the alternative.

Hey there, 43 also. I am finally feeling the pleasant calmer winding down vibe. Had a bunch of childhood emotions boil up to be felt last year and needed to start using breathwork to chill out. Now I just accept that I need to do breathwork every day and practice acceptance and gratitude or I become a cynical asshole.
I use an HRV pattern with a slightly longer exhale for parasympathetic boost, 5\1.5\7\1.5. Really works to chill me out and feel more positively about life and the world and working patiently towards goals.
I spent a lot of years complaining about everything, seeing so much from a negative perspective. I don't have some grandiose plan to change the world, but maybe I can make things better in small ways simply by not spewing my bad vibes into the mix. Perhaps even producing some regenerative healing vibes here and there with gardening and bushcraft and helping others.
I'm not sure when I stopped trying to fix the world.
But it sure is nice now to give up trying.
I agree with that part about letting people think they are right. As long as it doesn't directly affect something I care about, such as my income or outgo.

About the being comfortable not arguing. I've found that arguing is just an evolution of our ancient physical combat.
It's attempting to change someone by force, in which both have evolved through generations to build defenses to those attacks. Sure it works, but the benefits are ever decreasing, now it's like a 1% gain for 100% risk.
I've found it's much better to educate. Most of the time you won't change a person with just one discussion. But you've planted the seed.
And that doesn't always make you right either. You may be wrong. But it's the other person's duty to find evidence to the contrary. If you're wrong they will find contradictory evidence. If not, they won't.
If everybody starts doing this, and rejecting bad info, we'd get to the truth quicker than through verbal combat.

A personal example of this is in the past people used to argue with me about how US prisons are terrible, focusing on repeat offenders to keep the system going which includes slave labor. We would both argue.
Until I watched a video of a warden of the Norwegian Halden prison explaining logically, without snark remarks how their prison system is set up logically to reduce crime and rehabilitate offenders so the general public remains safer.
Completely changed my worldview than any online argument could.

So there is a documented thing that overall life happiness dips for many people in their 40s, but then the good news is that it bounces back again in your 50s! I don't remember why the researchers thought that was, but I'm assuming it has to do with a changing social life (e.g. having kids or deciding not to have kids), getting used to getting older, and reckoning with some of your past choices
No giving a f*** about stuff is a great part of getting old if not the best. Boredom is a great thing.
For me, no one's born perfect. Most of what Wheezy described is not about getting old, it's part of (some of us) learning to improve. In my eyes, getting old is just bad. Lets admit it. Your body declines, your mind declines. Your loved ones decline and pass away. It's important to acknowledge that getting old is just bad in order to properly understand how important it is to live to as full of an extend as possible while you're younger. Both your legs work well? Do nature hikes or challenge your running skills. Your mind's sharp? Join a debate team, pick up stand up comedy or whatever.. Build good memories for years you're unfit and unable. You don't want to get there with unfulfilled dreams and regrets.

One of the reasons I like you, Weezy, is that we are exactly the same age. Well....we're both 43 right now. One of the things I appreciate about getting old is that I increasingly feel part of an exclusive club of people the same age as me. This club has life experiences the align more closely to mine.
We all experiences the rise of the internet at roughly the same age. Most of us probably know what Top Trumps (in the uk, at least) are, we are familiar with the same adverts that were on tv when we were kids - basically we have the same cultural touchstones.
I didn't feel that connection to this group in my twenties and thirties, but now I'm increasingly aware of it, and it pleases me.

46 years old, started a new career 7 years ago, but still don't use a credit card with rewards. Actually, mine has rewards but I don't understand what I get.
I do not lament getting older. Many of my friends were denied the opportunity, I respect each day with that in mind.
And on a lighter note, I lived hard in my youth and now I’m all about being fitter, healthier and stronger. I turn 49 in three days. I’m wearing old clothes I put away in my early 20’s. I quit drinking and weight just dropped and I feel pretty great. Actually, I don’t think I’ve felt this good in decades to be honest. My aches and pains have gone away mysteriously. Could be diet, could be exercise, could be weight loss, or a combination of all of them, but I ain’t complaining. Neither is the missus 😂
Im 33, so not quite at the "my back hurts" age just yet.. But, having spend most of my life in an office chair, it was starting to catch up with me a year or so ago, hip pain, starting to see weight gain and such... Decided to take care of myself a lil more and it was honestly super easy once I figured out how. It's amazing how actually using your body can fix a lot of ones' small issues.

i think you confuse jealousy and envy. Envy is when you want what someone else has, but jealousy is when you're worried someone's trying to take what you have.
I'm 32 (not old by any means) and the best thing about it is not having to worry about turning 30 anymore😂 people make such a big deal about it. But I'm financially better off, my mental health is better, and I'm more sure of myself at 32 than I was at 22. I don't stress as much about work. I don't get harassed as much by creepy men as the street. Getting older is so freeing!

Everyone has been telling me thaty back will hurt by 27, 29, 30, 32, etc. It's still kicking and no problems. Thank god my genetics are helping with the exercise. Rock climbing is an A+. Going to ride this train as long as I can. It's either that or I have no low level pain. I've never had a headache. Thank you mom and dad haha.
