This announcement alone MADE THE ENTIRE DIRECT (in my opinion). This really does feel like a golden year for gaming in general, BUT THIS? This has been a wish LONG in the making.
Someone finally accessed the Star Road and made my wish for this remake come true, 27 years later. Gonna be crying happy tears playing this game, guaranteed.
I didn't play this growing up, but I have very strong and fond memories of Paper Mario and the Thousand-Year Door, so seeing people get hyped up makes me excited for them- hope that fans (old and new) enjoy this remake when it comes out!
I'm really excited for new players to try this game because it is great. It is a not-too-hard RPG with a decent story, charming and memorable characters, funny dialogue, great music, and fun battle system. It is also very unique for a Mario game. Originally co developed by then Squaresoft, now Square Enix, and Nintendo, it was the first Mario RPG game ever to be made and the only one by Square known for their Final Fantasy games. Like FF, Mario RPG is a true RPG but not nearly as daunting of complicated as any FF game. It is very light and charming and getting the timings right to do extra damage during battles becomes addicting. Also is impressive as it showed Square could also be very competent at good level design and fun platforming mixed with RPG turn based battles, something they had never really done before. So the game was groundbreaking in a lot of ways and I believe it stands the test of time and has aged very well. Now with this remake it will age even better and I'm excited for new people to get to try it out and discover what I mean.
You have to go in it with the right mindset. A lot of people who play SMRPG after first playing other major RPGs (TYD included) just tend to think that SMRPG is a "baby's first RPG" with weird humor. This isn't just due to recent comments, this is a common response that was seen over these past 20 years. When people first play this, they have to throw out all other ideas from other RPGs they've played. They have to treat it as its own unique world, own unique renditions of the Mario characters, own unique battle system (this is hard for Paper Mario / Mario & Luigi fans to dissociate... because PM's and M&L's battle systems were 100% inspired from SMRPG), with its own pace in difficulty (people who say it's easy never finished the game, and most certainly didn't face the secret boss). Go in there with expectations/comparisons, and you'll never get absorbed into the world and its characters. There's a reason this is a lot of people's favorite RPG despite playing newer RPGs with intense combat systems and heart-wrenching stories: because they had the pleasure of getting absorbed into its world and living out that adventure. Whereas nowadays, people have a hard time absorbing themselves into worlds without the right stimuli. Basically, you gotta be a kid again to have the most fun with this game. Don't take yourself/everything around you so seriously. And unlike most other games where you gotta' have that mindset to enjoy them: this game will reward you and will stay with you because of it.
I still cannot believe this is real and its happening. 27 years we waited. 27 YEARS.... Hoping that maybe, just maybe, Geno would get into Smash Brothers and renew hype for a game long forgotten in much the way Marth and Roy had reignited Fire Emblem in the West. Hoping that he would be in some game, some way, to bring back love and attention to a treasure of the 90s that had been quickly overshadowed by Mario 64... And now we get this, out of no where, and it's beautiful. Just like how I remembered it as a kid, all those years ago on the SNES... Beautiful as the day we lost it. 2023 is the best year for video games. Hands down. 😭
My EXACT reaction to this news. Omg, literally one of my most FAVORITE video game EVER. Its an incredible mario game, rpg, seriously; a masterpiece. I hope this now confirms that we’ll finally get a true sequel to Super Mario RPG now that this game has become a reality!!!!
Super Mario RPG is the introduction to RPGs for a whole generation, for me is one of the best game of all times, this remake was hard to believe because square and Nintendo may have disputes with the copyright, this is a dream come true
My childhood punching me in the face , and it feels so gawd damn GOOD!. I'm so happy. I fell in love with this game so many years ago and it's finally back!!!
Nice to meet you. I am Japanese. I always enjoy your full force reactions, and at the same time, I understand! I feel the best sympathy for you. At the end you repeatedly shout, "What is this year!" is the true feeling that I, and I am sure many other Japanese game fans, have been having since the announcement of ac6 for GOTY. *Many people of my generation are astonished by STAR OCEAN SECOND. I should say that this year's game industry is crazy, or should I say that the festival exploded after the Corona disaster, and I am worried that I will destroy my body by playing too much just this year, lol. I will continue to support you from Japan. Thank you very much. *Sorry if this is an unintelligible translation.
27 years. For 27 years I've wanted a sequel or another game in the series. For years we'd heard rumors about a sequel, or a remaster, or a remake. Each time we'd get our hopes up and nothing would happen. Gino got announced as an assist trophy in Smash and we thought, maybe, just maybe we'll get something soon. But as time went on, nothing happened. Until today. After 27 long years, Super Mario RPG is back. And we can look at everyone who ever doubted us, said we were crazy or that it would never happen and say with a loud voice in unison... YOU'RE GOD DAMN RIGHT IT IS!
It's finally happening! The graphics look genuinely good while keeping with the original style. Now I just need golden Sun to get this kind of treatment.
I've been watching every reaction stream of this and yours is the first one that mentioned Yaridovich by name...so glad my level of nerd is covered! Your rule!!!
My cousin had never seen me freak out like when I saw this reaction. This is in my opinion 1 of the top 3 greatest Mario games of all time!! They remaking my childhood!!! November cant come soon enough!!
The absolute fucking madmen actually did it. Our boy Geno is finally coming home! (It’s probably not a stretch to assume you’ll be streaming this day one)
I didn't know how you would react to this one KB, but it is so nice to see how much you liked the Super Mario RPG game, i got only some first stages, since the cartridge was rented, but now i will be able to play it complete with a graphics overhaul. This is one i was not expecting at all, thought i would never see anything new for this one.

Bro the Axem Rangers were always annoying for me 27 years ago and today probably still going to be annoying
the worst case scenario in the remake of Super Mario RPG is can be remove Curlax boss fight and his epic FF4 Boss Time.
I very much doubt they're removing Culex or the theme. Culex is SE's property, and Yoko is back to do the music.
