Hi John-Paul. Great video. I really enjoyed listening to this and the struggles and, perhaps, opportunities of working with people with different values and world views. I can see how it is easy to get caught up with wishing the client would see something as you see it, if you think they would suffer less as a result of that belief, but of course who are we to impose that. I wrote about empathy on my blog as I found it difficult to really understand properly. I found this quote by Carl Rogers “Empathy is the listener's effort to hear the other person deeply, accurately, and non-judgmentally. Empathy involves skilful reflective listening that clarifies and amplifies the person’s own experiencing and meaning, without imposing the listener’s own material.” Carl Rogers Easy to say, hard to do . Really enjoying this channel
Thanks Richard, really appreciate what you say. Yes, such an interesting subject as empathy is so important for the relationship. Roger’s makes it very clear about not imposing anything, very person-centred of course, so how does that sit with the fact I think we’ll all be making value judgments as humans. Important to think about. As I say, thanks for what you say about the video and for adding these comments. Hopefully we get to speak again soon 😊
