I have only twice, in 50 years of cat ownership, had to bathe a cat. The first time was when a cat managed to get into our disused chimney (now blocked off) and emerged covered in soot. The second time was when a new kitten, on his first supervised visit to the garden, contrived to jump into the pond over a foot-high fence and got covered with pondweed. No subsequent cats have ever needed it.

My wife is a veterinarian and says the cats should not be bathed very often. Please don't start doing this as a regular thing. They are perfectly capable of bathing themselves. If you bathe them too often it can lead to skin problems.
You should at least bathe them enough so they can get used to it, senior cats can't clean themselves easily as a younger cat so your cat will thank you later and that's why it's important to at least get them used to bathing
another one: lay a towel on the floor of the bathtub/shower for them to stand on, make sure its rough enough they have traction, but not to the point it can hurt their pads.

ive never bathed my cat before because she didnt need it, as she licks herself clean every day. she takes her time and chooses a specific time each day (normally at 6pm or so, while we eat dinner) and at 5-6am when we are just about to wake up. she was clean and soft everyday so we never had to bathe her for 2 years
Thats great but you should still bath her. Although cats lick themselves and make themselves clean, it isn't enough to clean fleas, germs, or bacteria that could settle on their skin/fur. And try special cat foods (I forgot what it was called) to prevent hairballs from forming in their stomach!

My cat will be 14 in May, and I've owned him for 13 years. I have never given him a full bath - never had to*. He grooms himself throughout the day, and my daughter and I frequently brush him with a boar-bristle brush to help get rid of loose fur and any fuzz or similar that he might pick up on his patrols around the house. His fur is supple, soft, and shiny, and he has a warm and pleasant smell.
