One of the best dance scenes from a movie ever. 3 exquisite dancers who look as though they are totally enjoying themselves and believe what they are singing about. Just perfection. America in West Side Story is the other perfect dance scene.

I came here because the great Chita Rivera passed away last week, and this is largest role she ever had in a movie (which is totally ridiculous). What a great talent she was. All three of them. I could watch this video on a continual loop for two hours, and not get tired of it. 🙌

I just can’t get over how brilliant Shirley MacLaine is in this number (and indeed, the whole film). She more than holds her own
alongside the other two and gives it that something extra ; “star quality”.All lovers of musicals must watch this.Thank you.

    • @larrydirtybird
      @larrydirtybird 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

She started out as a dancer on Broadway. She was the understudy for Carol Haney and took over the role, in the Bob Fosse choreographed musical, The Pajama Game. That role was the most dance-heavy role in the musical. So when I watch this movie, I see Shirley MacLaine going back to her roots. ❤

Off course it's an homage to Jerome Robbins' work on West Side Story. Fosse respected many of his peers and especially the work of Jerome Robbins, who at the time pioneered the idea of choreographer turned director and film maker.

In the original Broadway version of America three girls do the number, like this - no boys. But adding them was the best thing they could have done. Jerome Robbins was an all round genius, but for on stage excitement Fosse could match him. Robbins was a class act, and who else could do West Side Story, then dazzle you with something as diverse as The King and I, then ballet - but on the stage, Bob could get your pulse racing like nobody else.

The way Bob Fosse (in his film directing debut) staged this number is phenomenal: He basically shows all three girls' dreams through Charity's eyes- all she wants to do is join in their song, even if she isn't ready to do anything. But thank God he used three real dancers: a Broadway veteran (Rivera), an up-and-comer from "Charity's" London company (Kelly), and for the lead, a somewhat tall ballerina-turned Fosse understudy- who wound up doing more non-musical films than musical ones...ironic, no?? A wonderfully rambunctious-but-sexy number- sprinkles of West Side Story's "America," to be sure. The iconic leap at 4:05- right before the "phooey-" is the frame they always used to advertise the film on network television. (Yes, it was televised back in the day- in fact on NBC's Saturday Night movie, LOL!!)

    • @jochenstossberg5427
      @jochenstossberg5427 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree. But the rude fact is that Verdon was at her best in Can-Can, back in 1955 - before Sweet Charity on Broadway which was 1966. And well before she met Bob Fosse. I saw her and Chita Rivera in Chicago and they barely danced at all. They were both over 50. Lots of mythology around Gwen. Basically very few people under 80 would have seen her in anything, right? Her big career with Fosse came when she was past her dancing peak, frankly. All we have id clips and the Damn Yankees film. Not much is it?

@@reneedaughter No she didn't. But having said that Shirley Mac Laine was a very average dancer too. Gwen Verdon was the one who helped her the most for this film. As for Fosse - yes, there are definite 'cribs'/allusions to 'America' here both in setting an choreography (note the 'guitar playing' gesture - Chakiris and his dance mates do this exact move in 'WSS') - but that was Fosse...he was constantly breaking the fourth wall, intermixing cultural allusions and tropes, nodding to Rivera - the original 'Anita', etc., etc. Note the use of the surtitles in 'the Rich Man's Frug' and Robert Surtees' brilliantly dense, lurid and often highly theatrical lighting/cinematography [a key light comes up on the three at the end of this number as if they are on a stage]...all is artifice with Fosse, stage mechanics...but what artifice! What mechanics!

There's gotta be something better than this,
There's gotta be something better to do.
And when I find me something better to do,
I'm gonna get up, I'm gonna get out
I'm gonna get up, get out and do it!
There's gotta be some respectable trade,
There's gotta be something easy to learn.
And if I find me something I halfwit can learn,
I'm gonna get up, I'm gonna get out
I'm gonna get up, get out and learn it!
All these jokers, how I hate them
With their groping, grabbing, clutching, clinching,
    Strangling, handling, bumbling, pinching
There's gotta be some life cleaner than this,
There's gotta be some good reason to live.
And when I find me some kind of life I can live,
I'm gonna get up, I'm gonna get out,
I'm gonna get up, get out and live it!
    Right!
    Nickie:
I got it! I got it!
    I'm gonna be a receptionist
In one of those glass office buildings
Nine to five, I'm gonna have my own typewriter,
And water cooling and office parties...
    Ooooh, and coffee breaks...wow!
Then I sit on my desk on the forty-first floor
In my copy of a copy of a copy of Dior!
    I'll receive VIP tycoons
And I'll point to a chair
I'll say: honey, what you're waiting?
How would you like to put it down over there?
    All:
    Yeah!
There's gotta be something better than this,
There's gotta be something better to do,
And when I find me something better to do.
I'm gonna get up, I'm gonna get out
I'm gonna get up, get out and do it!
    Helene:
    Me too...Me too!
I'm gonna get a year to go right to the top
I'm gonna be a hat chat girl
At one of the East Side, high class restaurants
You know, a tray of cigarettes,
Costing 66 cents a pack and keep the change?
And all those hats coming in
    Dirbies, humbirds...
Ooooh! And that cute little checked number
With that skinny brim and a feather
    Take your hat, sir!
    Take your coat, sir!
    Take your vest, sir!
    Take your pants!
    Take your socks, sir!
    Take your shoes, sir!
I can hold them while you dance
    Take your eyes, sir!
    Take your ears, sir!
Take and see if you are free
    How about it after hours
I'll take you and you'll take me!
    Charity:
Me too...I'm gonna get out too!
    Nickie:
But, baby, what would you do?
    Charity:
I don't know...Just get me out of here and I'll figure out later!
There's gotta be some life cleaner than this
There's gotta be some good reason to live
    All:
And when I find me some kind of life I can live
    I'm gonna get up...
    I'm gonna get out...
La la la la la la ...
    How wow how wow
And when I find me some kind of life I can live
    I'm gonna get up...
    I'm gonna get up...
I'm gonna get up, get out and live it!

I’m not gonna spend the next 40 years of MY life in the fandango ball room
I am not going to become the worlds first little old grey haired taxi dancer
