For the last several years, Dale and I have gone on countless offroad and overland adventures in this 2001 Mercedes-Benz ML320 that we bought for $500. Dale fixed the burnt ABS motor, shoved some F150 shocks and hockey pucks underneath, slapped on some offroad tires and turned this ML SUV into an incredible overlander and Gambler 500 rig. However, with Dale's purchase of the new Diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee, it was time for the ML to retire.
These are surprisingly good off-road, have low-range gearing, and are decently reliable. They are really inexpensive as well, just a couple of thousand dollars can find you one of these trucks, or if you are lucky, the ML55 AMG variant. If you're looking for an SUV that has solid capability, interesting features, and will be different than everything else you see on the trails, consider these!
