Can you explain how that happened? I checked wiki and didn’t understand how he was able to shoot eraser and what chaos and dataminer have to do with it.
Dataminer turns items on pedestals into glitched items. Glitched items cause extremely random effects to happen that range greatly. I had one that made me endlessly fart when I picked up keys and bombs. The glitched item Carl had was causing him to randomly throw a bunch of erasers which permanently delete enemies they touch from the run
i love how many transformations he has gotten in the time he has played the game, but only noticed the guppy transformation, all others get the blind treatment.

But maybe let's not take every devil deal when health is a rare resource with your character... Or at least don't take an active for a heart when you already have a great active item. Necronomicon was just a downgrade for one heart of cost
To be fair it's basically just a resprite. He hasn't been great at noticing things visually, perhaps due to mental overload. The only functional difference It Lives has is very minor, regarding the enemies it spawns. But those aren't really a major part of the fight anyway aside from the Eyes at the start, which are the same as before.

From what I remember, in hollow knight the primal aspid never gave carl much of an issue, yet in isaac, the triple shot enemies are the ultimate threat
I can not wait for the moment he unlocks the Tainteds. Hes gonna get his mind blown. He thinks Lilith and Bethany have interesting mechanics, but Tainteds are next level :D Some of them is like playing a completely different game entirely.

Carl, the key to blue baby when you're new to the game is to be conservative with your health. In that first run, you gave up more than ten spirit hearts going into curse rooms and buying devil deals, and even more if you add in the hits you took in optional challenge rooms. This is a phase we all go through learning the game - once you start to get comfortable and figure some things out, most people get way too free with giving away health before they come around to a solid risk vs reward strategy. You can get away with that on a character who has red hearts, but it'll kill you on those that don't. I think if you avoid the devil deals, curse rooms, and challenge rooms for now, you'll find blue baby much easier and you'll get that win you're looking for. Edit: You also might want to consider not doing every room for every floor with him - once you've hit your item room, shop, and maybe secret rooms, most of what's left is just consumables. If you take more damage doing those rooms than you earn back from them, you're better off skipping them and heading to the next floor. Also, I'm REALLY enjoying this series, and I'm trying to help, not criticize. Hope you keep playing and get that BB win! 2nd edit: Should have watched the whole video before commenting. Nice win and that's a GREAT unlock.
You can get a bit risky if youre good at the game and just not get hit on like the first 3-4 floors. If you know all the synergies and exploits most runs can escalate really quickly, especially with devil deals. But i agree in his case its probably better to go for angel rooms for now, even though hes missing most of the broken Angel Item unlocks. Also the poop is underrated. Its extremely useful on Blue Baby because of the flies. If you get Petrified Poop trinket its even better. And lets not forget that you can build bridges with Poop and a bomb, just like with rocks.
That second bloat fight was outright malicious. The rocks blocked you from shooting it from the sides and it quickly moved up towards the top of the room. The Bloat is always bad, but rarely is it THAT bad.
Wow I hope Carl rewatches the Vod of that blue baby run, especially the womb floor specifically. (Spoiler below) Getting a glitched item with dataminer that gave eraser tears is insane and it's a shame Carl wasn't in a good place to appreciate it!

@daft8090 Technique is 100% required, but it will only get you so far without knowledge. TL requires you to know the one item that raises your win rate from 0.1% to maybe 20% Spoilers: Glowing Hourglass let's you take up to 3 hits per floor

Seen, and played, plenty of winning runs without it (fairly decent winrate too, I'm not as good as some people but 0.1% is an extreme underestimate). There are plenty of other ways for TL to gain survivability, and one of the biggest is simply speed in recognizing a room and knowing how to deal with it safely. You could reasonably call that either game knowledge or mechanical skill, which is part of what I was getting at in my joke: one person could say "it's mostly skill," another could say "it's mostly knowledge," a third could say "it's mostly luck" and all of them would be correct.
@Skatche I know I have all the marks for TL except D, just because I don't want to have rush to H and be weaker. I've had so many runs where the P just didn't spawn. D telefragging really requires some broken run though

I'm normally all on board for Carl's learning and seeing his ways of doing things, but I was so upset that he never used Sulfur again while it was already active
non spoiler semantic stuff: for whatever reason isaac does this thing where some in-universe terms are different than what the game calls them internally and what the community calls them. the only one carl has encountered so far is how pickup quotes refer to pickups (hearts, bombs, keys, etc.) as items, like with book of sin, but those are just called pickups both by the community and internally. there are a couple more prominent examples of this later that are spoilers
To answer your question about knowledge vs ability to play the game at the beginning. I'd say 75% knowledge 25% skill. You could defenitly get better at playing but once you know enough anyone can absolutely destroy this game
Man I think it’s gotten to the point where you should be asking more questions to chat. The problem isn’t just that you have gotten the same item multiple times but don’t know how they work but rather you have gotten multiple items in the past that you just don’t remember getting.
Its definitely because i have thousands of hours played with it hammered into my brain but Dr. Carl not bombing the rocks with the X urks me everytime. Sometimes he zooms by it, totally understandable. Sometimes he sits in the room for a good 30s, he is carl blind for a reason.
IMO, it’s both knowledge and skill. The game is designed so it’s completely possible to do an entire run without taking a single hit. It’s very hard, but by knowing the enemy attacks well enough and having good enough reaction time everything is theoretically avoidable. But there is an incredible amount of depth in this game then what initially meets the eye, and “pro” isaac players understand the mechanics to do certain things that a beginner would have 0 idea even existed in the game
While it is in theory possible to do a non-hit run, lets be honest here Hush and Delirium can be very luck based :D It took me several broken runs on The Lost and tainted Lost to beat them.
It mildly annoys me when chat talks a little too candidly about the items Carl sees or picks up. A lot of those discussions and reactions would be better had in the spoiler Discord, but obviously sometimes people can't help themselves and going into the discord is an extra layer of friction for most people. People are also probably more likely to do it, especially just joining in, if there isn't someone regularly reminding them not to. (Just part of streaming, really) Not much to do about it really, just makes me want to tell people not to, as it could give sort of spoilery hints as to the quality or effects of items. Which takes away from the experience of learning those things yourself!

Making the effect gated behind the challenge would at least let new players learn about the concept of those items before they get them and old players can just rush the challenge to unlock it.
Carl you have inspired me to try this game out! I love rogue likes but this game never appealed to me. Even though I am obviosuly a little spoiled on secrets, seeing you have such a positive and learning attitude has inspired me to try and figure out the remaining secrets for myself.
As someone who has true 100% this game twice (and every isaac game/expansion since the first one), a dealthless 100% run requires both incredible skill AND deep game knowledge. Without both it wouldn't be possible.
1:20:42 If you're interested, Isaac actually has an official card game! It's called "Binding of Isaac: Four Souls", it's a bit rough to learn, but after the learning curve it's a pretty fun game! And of course, it's full of references to the game. (Which means, if you do want to try it, probably wait until you've explored the game more, I'd say until all endings. :p) You can buy the base game at all times (missing some kickstarter exclusives), or play the table with all cards on Tabletop Simulator. But a little birdie told me there may be a kickstarter at some point rereleasing all the exclusive card goodies, I can probably give a heads up when that happens. :)
Also to explain it a little: The game can be co-op or versus, up to 4 players. The goal, given the title, is to collect four souls, typically from defeating bosses. You start with a random charater, each with a unique item, and can use a hand of loot cards (gotten each turn and from defeating monsters) to play useful effects, and also gain or buy items to upgrade your character. There's a set of enemies you can see and attack, or you can go for a random one from the top of the monster deck, which can also contain random events to play out. There's also rooms and extra rules and challenges to spice up the game a bit, the game's pretty packed with variety! And also absolutely evil design at times, wouldn't expect anything less from Edmund.
I think the difference between Carl and veterans is 80% not getting hit and 20% knowledge, I suggest min-maxing more aggressively and every floor, particularly when it comes to red heart management and timing your soul protection pick ups. Minor hint for min-maxing: Devil beggars annoyingly will never pay out the first 5 times in hard mode, but very rapidly from the 6th onward.
i disagree its really like 33% skill issue 66% knowledge like if you filled his brain with knowledge he wouldnt put himseld in bad spots, and would win more. but hes blind so hes testing shit out and it backfires alot
Im a veteran and 100%ed isaac twice so far and im skill wise not exceptionally better than Carl. In my opinion knowledge is the absolute key in this game. You can so easily break entire runs if you know what youre doing. There are so many item interactions and exploits that can just spirale out of control real fast. You just need to know them and plan ahead a bit. It starts with small things like always going Downpour 2 for a guaranteed extra item and ends with stuff like trinket rotation for minmaxing and exploiting the D20 on pickups.

Carl you did incredibly good on the first run! Even while being sick you made great dodges and stuff, dataminer made something pretty crazy but I don't wanna spoil, and bloat with 2 hearts is pretty unfair sometimes even for "experienced" players

The amount of secrets, unlocks, characters and items in general make this a very difficult game to fully unlock on your own. I would think a win deserves some information, whether that's a random page from the wiki or a viewing a specific item from the wiki that you picked up on the run. Then it wouldn't feel like chat gave you info, nor would it give you everything you used, but could add an important aspect to unlocking more information to the game without revealing everything and overwhelming you.
To your opening question: maybe 80% knowledge 20% technical skill. Most of your technical skill is lacking when items significantly change up gameplay. But you still struggle with remembering what items do and a lot of other little things that aren't immediately obvious. You might consider keeping a personal spreadsheet of items you've run into and identified, assuming you want to stay away from the wiki for a while longer.
i might be a bit late to the quantum computing discussion, but i'd like to add we do have lots of uses cases for quantum computing, they could be used to understand protein unfolding, to break current internet cyptography, to develop a quantum-secure cryptograph system, would be massive for AI too quantum computing is not just computers but faster, they'd be to our (classical) computers what our computers were to calculators. huge tech jump but the main issue atm is that quantum computers need to run at temperatures near 0 Kelvin. temperature is essentially quantum particles messing around, and that makes computations instable and impossible. we need the particles to be as still as possible, so that we can control them to do math for us so until we find cheaper/better ways to acchieve low temps, or discover a way to do quantum computing without this requirement (such as using pressure), quantum computing is inviable
can I be honest guys? Bloat is a really easy boss. You just stand above it. And, yes, it ALWAYS will shoot the laser when you’re below it or to the sides. So just walk in and out of those zones while it’s about to finish another animation, and it will shoot the lasers after you’ve already walked out of that space, giving you time to safely damage it more. The worst part of the boss is just the floating eyes because they can put a wrench in what you do sometimes. That’s about it though.
My time with blue baby was a lot better when I stopped taking devil deals with blue baby, though I got 100% in isaac before blue babys devil deals got cheaper. Though to this day I would probably still skip devil deals. I cannot tell my reason though :smile:
depends. Angel rooms are much better now since Repentance. Way more good items in there like the stairway or immaculate heart. But before that Devil Deals were almost always just straight up better if you didnt unlock the broken Angel Room items yet like Godhead. Just way more DMG up items, Brimstone, Guppy items for the transformation, etc.

Sisters Vis were SO crazy they could easily ruin your whole run, but then they got nerfed SO badly that now they're one of the easiest bosses, especially for those who have mastered killing them when they were op

A bit unrelated to the game iteslf, but seeing people complain in the chat about ads - Carl, check if the twtich ads/sub exploit works for you financially. Tldr is that (if you have them available) you sign the most atrocious ad bounty (x amount of ads per y hours of streaming) and use that money to buy a sub for every viewer you have so that in reality noone has to watch ads and you may be still in the positive from the bounty money (considering you still get back a cut of sub money spent). Of course doesnt make sense to do it if you end up in the negative, but you can math it out and see if it makes sense for yor channel

for whatever reason isaac does this thing where some in-universe terms are different than what the game calls them internally and what the community calls them. the only one carl has encountered so far is how pickup quotes refer to pickups (hearts, bombs, keys, etc.) as items, like with book of sin, but those are just called pickups both by the community and internally. there are a couple more prominent examples of this later that are spoilers
To answer your question about knowledge vs ability to play the game at the beginning. I'd say 75% knowledge 25% skill. You could defenitly get better at playing but once you know enough anyone can absolutely destroy this game
Man I think it’s gotten to the point where you should be asking more questions to chat. The problem isn’t just that you have gotten the same item multiple times but don’t know how they work but rather you have gotten multiple items in the past that you just don’t remember getting.

Its definitely because i have thousands of hours played with it hammered into my brain but Dr. Carl not bombing the rocks with the X urks me everytime. Sometimes he zooms by it, totally understandable. Sometimes he sits in the room for a good 30s, he is carl blind for a reason.
IMO, it’s both knowledge and skill. The game is designed so it’s completely possible to do an entire run without taking a single hit. It’s very hard, but by knowing the enemy attacks well enough and having good enough reaction time everything is theoretically avoidable. But there is an incredible amount of depth in this game then what initially meets the eye, and “pro” isaac players understand the mechanics to do certain things that a beginner would have 0 idea even existed in the game

While it is in theory possible to do a non-hit run, lets be honest here Hush and Delirium can be very luck based :D It took me several broken runs on The Lost and tainted Lost to beat them.

It mildly annoys me when chat talks a little too candidly about the items Carl sees or picks up.
A lot of those discussions and reactions would be better had in the spoiler Discord,
but obviously sometimes people can't help themselves and going into the discord is an extra layer of friction for most people.
People are also probably more likely to do it, especially just joining in,
if there isn't someone regularly reminding them not to. (Just part of streaming, really)
Not much to do about it really, just makes me want to tell people not to,
as it could give sort of spoilery hints as to the quality or effects of items.
Which takes away from the experience of learning those things yourself!

Making the effect gated behind the challenge would at least let new players learn about the concept of those items before they get them and old players can just rush the challenge to unlock it.

Carl you have inspired me to try this game out! I love rogue likes but this game never appealed to me. Even though I am obviosuly a little spoiled on secrets, seeing you have such a positive and learning attitude has inspired me to try and figure out the remaining secrets for myself.
As someone who has true 100% this game twice (and every isaac game/expansion since the first one), a dealthless 100% run requires both incredible skill AND deep game knowledge. Without both it wouldn't be possible.

It's called "Binding of Isaac: Four Souls", it's a bit rough to learn, but after the learning curve it's a pretty fun game! And of course, it's full of references to the game. (Which means, if you do want to try it, probably wait until you've explored the game more, I'd say until all endings. :p)
You can buy the base game at all times (missing some kickstarter exclusives), or play the table with all cards on Tabletop Simulator.
But a little birdie told me there may be a kickstarter at some point rereleasing all the exclusive card goodies, I can probably give a heads up when that happens. :)
Also to explain it a little:
The game can be co-op or versus, up to 4 players.
The goal, given the title, is to collect four souls, typically from defeating bosses.
You start with a random charater, each with a unique item, and can use a hand of loot cards (gotten each turn and from defeating monsters) to play useful effects, and also gain or buy items to upgrade your character.
There's a set of enemies you can see and attack, or you can go for a random one from the top of the monster deck, which can also contain random events to play out.
There's also rooms and extra rules and challenges to spice up the game a bit, the game's pretty packed with variety! And also absolutely evil design at times, wouldn't expect anything less from Edmund.
This is why i brought up boardgames in chat. I own the first and 2nd edition.

I think the difference between Carl and veterans is 80% not getting hit and 20% knowledge, I suggest min-maxing more aggressively and every floor, particularly when it comes to red heart management and timing your soul protection pick ups.
Minor hint for min-maxing:
Devil beggars annoyingly will never pay out the first 5 times in hard mode, but very rapidly from the 6th onward.
i disagree its really like 33% skill issue 66% knowledge like if you filled his brain with knowledge he wouldnt put himseld in bad spots, and would win more. but hes blind so hes testing shit out and it backfires alot
Im a veteran and 100%ed isaac twice so far and im skill wise not exceptionally better than Carl. In my opinion knowledge is the absolute key in this game. You can so easily break entire runs if you know what youre doing. There are so many item interactions and exploits that can just spirale out of control real fast. You just need to know them and plan ahead a bit. It starts with small things like always going Downpour 2 for a guaranteed extra item and ends with stuff like trinket rotation for minmaxing and exploiting the D20 on pickups.
Poor unloved Lodestone. Carl dissed it hard, but it put in WORK in that Ultra Greed fight.

The amount of secrets, unlocks, characters and items in general make this a very difficult game to fully unlock on your own.
I would think a win deserves some information, whether that's a random page from the wiki or a viewing a specific item from the wiki that you picked up on the run.
Then it wouldn't feel like chat gave you info, nor would it give you everything you used, but could add an important aspect to unlocking more information to the game without revealing everything and overwhelming you.
To your opening question: maybe 80% knowledge 20% technical skill. Most of your technical skill is lacking when items significantly change up gameplay. But you still struggle with remembering what items do and a lot of other little things that aren't immediately obvious.
You might consider keeping a personal spreadsheet of items you've run into and identified, assuming you want to stay away from the wiki for a while longer.

i might be a bit late to the quantum computing discussion, but i'd like to add
we do have lots of uses cases for quantum computing, they could be used to understand protein unfolding, to break current internet cyptography, to develop a quantum-secure cryptograph system, would be massive for AI too
quantum computing is not just computers but faster, they'd be to our (classical) computers what our computers were to calculators. huge tech jump
but the main issue atm is that quantum computers need to run at temperatures near 0 Kelvin. temperature is essentially quantum particles messing around, and that makes computations instable and impossible. we need the particles to be as still as possible, so that we can control them to do math for us
so until we find cheaper/better ways to acchieve low temps, or discover a way to do quantum computing without this requirement (such as using pressure), quantum computing is inviable
can I be honest guys? Bloat is a really easy boss. You just stand above it.
And, yes, it ALWAYS will shoot the laser when you’re below it or to the sides. So just walk in and out of those zones while it’s about to finish another animation, and it will shoot the lasers after you’ve already walked out of that space, giving you time to safely damage it more. The worst part of the boss is just the floating eyes because they can put a wrench in what you do sometimes. That’s about it though.

My time with blue baby was a lot better when I stopped taking devil deals with blue baby, though I got 100% in isaac before blue babys devil deals got cheaper. Though to this day I would probably still skip devil deals. I cannot tell my reason though :smile:
depends. Angel rooms are much better now since Repentance. Way more good items in there like the stairway or immaculate heart. But before that Devil Deals were almost always just straight up better if you didnt unlock the broken Angel Room items yet like Godhead. Just way more DMG up items, Brimstone, Guppy items for the transformation, etc.

Bloat used to be a lot, lot worse. But not nearly as bad as Sisters Vis were at one point. Sisters Vis were SO crazy they could easily ruin your whole run, but then they got nerfed SO badly that now they're one of the easiest bosses, especially for those who have mastered killing them when they were op

A bit unrelated to the game iteslf, but seeing people complain in the chat about ads - Carl, check if the twtich ads/sub exploit works for you financially. Tldr is that (if you have them available) you sign the most atrocious ad bounty (x amount of ads per y hours of streaming) and use that money to buy a sub for every viewer you have so that in reality noone has to watch ads and you may be still in the positive from the bounty money (considering you still get back a cut of sub money spent). Of course doesnt make sense to do it if you end up in the negative, but you can math it out and see if it makes sense for yor channel
