At 6:11 in the video is the best advice for any guitar player or musician for that matter. I repeat this to every musician that asks. I can't count the times I have been in the exact situation of having to perform and learn a song at the same time and make it look like I have been doing it for years. My advice, play with others a lot, put yourself in uncomfortable situations that require you to think on your feet and most importantly stay attentive to what is going on around you and the musicians you are playing with. Be valuable. Find your space and allow others theirs. It is incredibly liberating to be able to take on a challenge like that and pull through. They aren't all winners but they are all learning experiences. Does that mean don't practice? heck no! You hit that stage more prepared than anyone else and then expect the unexpected and play in the moment.

Funny thing I was early for work so I stopped at a pawn shop to see if there was any cool pedals. I always check out the guitars and the magic happened with a Ibenez s model looking thing. Looking at the back side then around to the front it was a green Schecter . It was love at first sight. Later remembered Phil reviewed one like it . Then sold it to a pawn shop. Hmm mm could it be.?

I think rehearsing/playing live with other musicians is extremely important for guitarists.
Having a musical conversation with other players.
You can practice by yourself all you want, but it won’t prepare you for how to play along with the drummer speeding up or the singer going into a chorus early, & just being flexible enough to adjust in real time, because even if they are “wrong”, to the audience, they’re right!

Phil, I have a friend who collects guitars two at a time.
He will buy a, "high end," guitar, priced between $1000 and $6000 (yes, a wide spread, but we are both fans of many different instruments and different builders), then soon after will buy a very similar guitar (same shape, both vintage or modern styled, etc.), trying to keep the price below $500.
He will play both day and night for weeks, as much as possible, and then he will come to my shop, notebook in hand, and we will try various modifications, from minor changes all the way to,"you're kidding me, right?" to see what we can do to make the lower priced instrument sound, and / or feel, as close as possible to the higher priced instrument.
Sometimes we get very, very close to that sound, other times it seems like an exercise in futility.
Often, we are surprised what changes to the instrument bring about the changes in the instruments tone, or attack and/or transient, or the sustain , or what harmonic overtones are enhanced or suppressed, and it shows up on a spectrum analyzer when you hear it, definitely, but not every single time.
Then when we swap out components, or make sometimes major modifications to the body, or the neck, or the fretboard, just how drastically some changes affect the feel and playability of the instruments, in addition to the changes in the dynamic characteristics .
Sometimes, changes surprise us by having less impact on the feel or playability of an instrument then we were expecting prior to making those changes. Often having expectations of a significant difference, based on things we had done with previous instruments, and then beating completely surprised by the resultant changes being much less significant than we had expected, or, and these are great surprises, when the resultant changes in feel calm playability, although the tonal, dynamic, enharmonic changes just being very different from what we would have predicted, based on what we have done in similar situations, with similar instruments possibly years ago.
Occasionally my friend will surprised me by showing up with a bass guitar, and some of the most dramatic and unexpected change have been when we modified inexpensive Bass intending to come close to a high-end Bass weather vintage or modern.
Enjoying the video of sunflower field, but it's time for me to go back to the shop and make some exotic sawdust LOL and chips of brass and stainless steel

I've bought used guitars twice online. Both were excellent instruments. I have bought one new Charvel online. Also excellent. The problem with buying used gear online from individuals is that most people haven't a clue as to how to safely pack an item for shipment. I have received things that survived the journey only through the grace of God. Also, I hate when a buyer asks me why I am selling whatever I am selling. The most stupid question ever asked. Does it matter? Will it impact whether you purchase the item or not? If it has an issue and the seller hasn't already disclosed it they're not going to do so at that point. I try to think up creative answers like "I found out that the previous owner was a serial killer and I'd prefer not to own it".

  • @valuedhumanoid6574
    @valuedhumanoid6574 5 ปีที่แล้ว

On the used gear thing, I use Craigslist a lot. When I ask to meet in person, their responses will dictate how we proceed, if at all. I always insist on meeting in a public place, such as a McDonalds, Hardees, etc. and inside. Second, I tell them I will be bringing a screwdriver, a magnifying glass and flashlight. I will be removing covers, checking serial numbers, dates, pickups, etc. If they tell me no, then I cancel the meet all together. If they can't stand up to a little scrutiny, they're hiding something. Either it's not all original, it's a Chibson, it's not got the correct tubes, you get the idea. Now, it doesn't mean I am not still interested in the item, it just means we're not going to agree on the price. If you say original, it had better be original. None of this "well, the neck pickup crapped out so I replaced it with an aftermarket". It may be better than the original, but the price is coming way down. Many times when tell them the second one about the screwdriver, that will usually stop it from happening.

Hey Phil, super stoked about the conversation between you and Gibson. I am hopeful it's a step to bridge the gap between all controversies lately. I'm going to comment on the Gibson guitar destruction: if it were me and I believed I made an inferior product I'd destroy the product to. Remember the name Gibson should mean 100% quality. If those guitars were given to a school you know eventually they would get out to the public. Gibson doesn't want that. I'd fire the public relations person for allowing that video to be publicized. Anyway, I truly believe your the guy for us to bridge that gap with Gibson. Absolutely love your channel...I really hope companies like Gibson are paying attention.

I can't play a song from beginning to end to save my life. I want to be the rhythm guitarist, that really is most of the song you listen to anyway. Those of you who don't know him, Jason Neubauer, of that 80's hair band, out of Niagra Falls area, now this guy can play songs like nobody else. He is like a karaoke machine for guitar. I just hope to play guitar on stage one day before I die, and just have fun being part of the band!! Just play the meat and potatoes and the desert will come later as time gets under your belt.Lets Play!!

To Timothy Allen, I was late today, had stuff to get done. I own the Squier Jaguar SS PJ bass. I love it, though I am no expert. I think you should save the cash since you're a home player. If you were a gigging musician, I would still go with the Squier. You can beat on it for theatrical purposes and know you're not gonna be out of a ton of money. Mine came in pristine condition, it was even in tune. I guess that's just Sweetwater though. It's extremely well finished, the neck is very comfortable and the rosewood fret board is easily the nicest looking fretboard I own, including my Gibson SGHP. It's tight grained wood and has a beautiful marbling to it. On all of my other guitars, they seem very much more porous. I've played the American built Fender version at 2 different Guitar Centers and they were really nice, but I really don't see the need to spend another grand as this one is so nicely built. Maybe I got lucky, who knows as I didn't go to Sweetwater to play it and it's possible that Guitar Center gets less than the top of the line Fenders, I couldn't say. But I really do love this Squier. I think I paid $200 for it last year. Btw, my best built Epiphone came from Indonesia, the same place where this Squier came from, they seem miles above the Chinese built guitars and basses in quality.

I saw this comment isn't just ain't that you but just to the general or the incentive you was in general. I'm going to give one example and there are others and I'm going to use PRS guitars. Videos Paul cutting next off of guitars. Why do you think he's doing that. And he's not the only one in this company that is tasked with doing these things. He does not have to keep the quality control of his guitar to a point that she approves of. He does not sell seconds, stocks, or give away these types of guitars to charities or people that say hey it's destroying a guitar I'll take it anyway. Those guitar could be repurposed just as well as Gibson can. Or any other company that does this. The difference is Gibson has been in the news non-stop over it bankruptcy and financial problems, it's lawsuits, and anything else you can think of that would look negative to them. this is the difference Gibson is a huge company when they have problems that they could cause it's in a lot larger amounts and it's just an assumption. those firebird access who are the most hated Gibson ever made. They also had problems with the guitar themselves structurally why would they want to take the chance of those guitars in those numbers getting somehow repurpose or put back on the used market with their name on it and having all that other crap dumped on them once again. No company wants to put a seconds or be ready to get tar out and have given it for charity or giving it to a person or whatever that case maybe and then have them flood the market on the used I should say flood to use markets with their inferior product. And Gibson I think needs to worry about that more than any other company because they've had problems with their fault control. I guess I'd been the one in a million person that has own sweet Gibson of which all of them are amazing guitar sand needed no fixing whether it was due to the finish or the mechanics of it or the world or anything like that my kids are all just beautiful and I love them. Apparently it's you can tell I am a Gibson person. They're my favorite guitar. As a kid I wanted to Gibson more than anything. It took me decades to be able to afford my Firebirds and I have not been let down by it. That's my two cents till I'm a subscriber I love you videos I love what you do so don't take this as a An attack on you please. I'd like to also and this with please excuse any typos misspelled words definitely lack of punctuation I'm not a bad diaper and believe it or not I'm not even a literate was all my friends like to say I am LOL I'm just a really legally blind using Speech-to-Text what she does and says what it wants to. Yours truly, Bob the blind bedroom guitarist

My old analog Nady True Diversity had a small capacitator soldered into the guitar plug. Like Nady beeing too carefull.
Because of this it had not enough Power in the signal, so l changed the plug and left the capacitator out of it. Now it is fine for passive and active basses.
If ever an instrument will come with the output signal too hot, there is a little knob on the back side of the reciever to turn down the output signal of the reciever.
A wireless unit should give you about the same signal strength as you have with a 9 ft cable.

Your point on not using expensive guitars at punk rock shows is most prudent - I had to fill in for a friend's Blink-182 tribute band back in January and all my other guitars save for my ESP Custom Shop SRC-6 were in getting work done, so I ended up using an $8,000 AUD axe for a blink covers set and I was so worried about potentially destroying the guitar that I could barely enjoy myself on stage. Never again.
