    As I watched the video, I was amazed by the craftsmanship that it took to take this from a pile of raw materials to a fine bow. But then I read the comments, people questioning value, criticizing the time, (9 months was the construction time, not the hours spent building this work or art), others complaining about other posts, everything from someone being stupid for thinking the bow has one value while someone else seems to think they can but a better bow off Amazon, or some strange reference to some guy's daughter.
    The value of an item is only what someone would be willing to pay for it. From the comments here, the value would only be a few dollars as most of the comments are from those that don't understand the value of craftsmanship, but for those that do, and there are a few, the value would be a whole lot higher.
    I have seen articles where "works of art" go for millions, I look at the item and I'm not impressed. But just because I'm not, it doesn't mean that it has no value, and I wouldn't comment. But others here are quick to criticize.
    So, to sum it up, if you don't have something nice to say,,,,,,,
    Just my thoughts,

      A handmade composite bow like this one, depending on workmanship could easily cost, I'd say, 800 - 1200 USD but I am guessing here.
      Edit: Did some looking, for ones made of actual materials, not fiberglass, it seems to range 300 - 600, but these are from companies who produce them, not individual Bowyers. Bows from a professional Bowyers can run a bit high.

      Perhaps it's just because I am older, and wiser, I'd like you to consider this. The video isn't any sort of a political statement, it is not expressing any controversial views,. There is no Geo-political message in the video, the video is not critical of others. The video does not advocate violence against others, even though it is about the creation of a "Weapon of Mass Destruction" is skilled hands. The video does not pit man against woman, white against black, East against West, humanoid earth life forms against some non binary life form from Mars. The video is not offensive!
      As a child, my "female parental unit", don't want to offend anyone by calling her my mother, said to me, like many other parents also said to their children, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything".
      Not every video requires you to comment on it, maybe TH-cam would improve if commenting was completely disabled and we had to keep our comments to ourselves.
      Of course this is just my opinion, I could be wrong. (DM)
      End of rant.

    The amount of patience is unparalleled to any average person, especially the people that make ignorant comments. I'm still a beginner boyer for fun. I make bows strictly from wood, and it takes time and patience, and for me it is hard to have both, and when you have no patience your make mistakes and break bows, I have over ten broken bows and only 3 working ones. I can't imagine how frustrated he must have felt making his first few horn bows and breaking them if he did. congrats on keeping functional tradition alive.

      And to think, it took generations of unknown geniuses passing down their knowledge to get to this point, in bits and pieces at a time, and they themselves probably spent most of THEIR own lives trying to figure out how to make most of the parts.
      Who was the guy, for instance, that took a look at the tendons of an animal leg and thought to themselves; "hey, I'm gonna try weaponizing this by cooking it, drying it out, and making it into a bendy string to tie to some wood and launch sharp sticks with!", ya know?
      What kind of thought process leads to such amazing things?
      I know that's a little over-dramatic, but it shows that some of the world's most amazing minds never even get the recognition they deserve.

    • @wea69420
      @wea69420 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@smashbrolink It didn't take geniuses, but it did take maybe thousands of generations of people who discovered little things as they figured out how to live. Who knows, maybe tendon cordage was discovered when trying to make suitable housing, and they just looked at them as long strips of material to tie stuff with.
      I'm not trying to put this down, it's just nice to put into perspective what a lot of average persons can accomplish when working together. Humanity is amazing.

      @@wea69420 yes, it is all incremental. Something like sinew as a string would have started as just using the raw sinew to bind a sharpened stone to a string by wrapping and tying it, or perhaps even making a sling with it. They would have noticed that it dries out, shrinks, and becomes more rigid but still slightly elastic. They would also notice what happens to the sinew when they cook it. When you life is a constant struggle for survival, it is amazing what uses you can find for what you eat and collect...when your life is a struggle you try not to waste anything.
      We marvel at modern advances and praise those advancements rightfully, but we would do well to spend more time marveling at just how brilliant our ancestors must have been to go from not knowing how to speak to developing the first true civilizations. The larger the cooperative group, the faster they can advance. This is why, despite being an IT Professional, I don't marvel at the new micro chips and screens that are developed; I marvel at the Internet and other communication platforms that serve to bring as many people into the same discussion as possible. Sharing ideas is how this whole thing works for mankind, because the smartest human working alone is doomed while thousands of below average intelligence humans working together would thrive.

And that is all the tools he needs, worse yet he looks barely 21. That he makes the thing look easy , makes his own glue,sinew,probably caught ,cleaned, and tanned the snake skin( let me guess- cobra skin), hunted down the wood -dried said - life is not fair.

Talk about hand made, I'll bet even that perfect compact Bowie didn't come out of any catalog. The careful filming, clear, focused, every step of every stage demonstrated, SO many pieces, the traditional tools, and processes I'd have never imagined... The filming clearly showed that this guy's created these so many times he certainly doesn't need direction. SO many things to comment on..I wrote an entire page, then deleted. So it's like tendons horns and wood making the composition of a bow. It's amazing seeing a part of an animal mixed with another. Both used for different reasons I presume. I can't imagine how harsh it must've been back in the era where those bows were the only possible way to fight an opponent from afar. the quantity of time required to make just one! being a warrior from that time and receiving (or making your own) a bow like this to go fight for you life is truly an exceptional thing to think about.

    • @jaspersuri1304
      @jaspersuri1304 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Sorry to burst your bubble, in war time bows weren't as beautiful as this one. They were made by highly trained wood workers and cheaply done. They mass produced short bows and long bows so no composite bows or recurve bows.

    • @erfpsdy
      @erfpsdy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      As far as I know tendons resist to tension and horn to compression, that's why the tendons are on the external side and the horn part is on the internal one. Also, like said before, in war time most people would use mass produced bows or slings

    • @cannonfodder4854
      @cannonfodder4854 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Worth the effort, a well made bow with good draw strength can punch through a sizable thickness of plate armour with the right arrow. An arrow with a weighted metal tip and narrow shaped, low impact surface area can punch through steel.

    • @DumitruUrsu
      @DumitruUrsu 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      This specific type of bow never was the only possible way to to fight from afar. Selfbows (from a single piece of wood) are way simpler to make, they go back to prehistory, and could be made of equal strength as the composite bows(like the one in the video). The issue with selfbows - the wood crumbles and splits if you make them so small - the famous english longbow, made of yew, the best material for selfbows, had to be abou 180cm in length to be usable. Or as tall as the person who uses it. Not usable for horse mounted warriors, who were the first to use composite bows. The composite bow uses the compression strength of the horns, the tension strenght of the tendons, and are bonded on a wooden core with hide or fish glue - the bow can be shortened down to about 100cm - way more practical.

    • @DumitruUrsu
      @DumitruUrsu 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@erfpsdy yeah, I think the slingshot is underestimated - the Romans used lead projectiles (sometimes with insults written on them) and they were able to pass through a regular shield from about 50m (we, Terra Dacica Aeterna did some experimental archaeology on this). Also, as opposed to an arrow - if you were hit in the helmet, you'd probably loose consciousness - and are definitely able to break bones. A good slingshot can be braided in a matter of hours, although using it requires a lot of skill.
