Just think of all the young people starting to cook. You saved them, girl. I'm 65 years old, and you taught this old dog new tricks, lol. Thank you so much Angela
The reason wet potholders burn is because it turns into steam immediately upon contact with the hot material in the oven! Steam burns are quick, fast, and need no direct contact to hurt. I’m so glad you included this tip, so many don’t know it!!! Also be careful to not use polyester/acrylic holders on hot items for too long, if at all. The material is plastic and can melt on contact with hot surfaces ❤
Yes, as a 72 year old and retired Dietary Manager, I know how the water on pot holders works. Things like this was taught by my Mom and should be taught by all Moms.
Thank you so very much for your explanation! I really do appreciate that and it definitely only takes one time to burn your hands like that. Ugh! Have a great rest of your week and thank you so very much for watching🙌🏼
Make sure to boil soaked beans for about 15 minutes. Toss out that water. Rinse well. And then cook them as you’d like. The first boiling will get rid of gas inducing compounds. Your beans will taste better too and the water won’t look so gross and muddy.
@@michellegriffin1994 Also, I think it’s worth noting that aside from gas inducing compounds in beans, many anti-nutrients like phytates, lectins, and glucosinolates are found in beans and can be removed or deactivated by soaking. There are things in beans that can be deadly if a bean is eaten raw, for example. I know no one is eating raw means lol, but, I figured I’d mention that to better paint a picture of the importance of boiling beans first and dumping that gross murky water. Also, for clarification, ANTI NUTRIENTS is anything that prevents your body from fully absorbing minerals and vitamins.
I will line a bowl with foil and drain my meat into that. Once it cools and solidifies I can toss the foil and fat in the trash. I also use the paper towel trick when it's a small amount of fat!
When I first started watching Julia I told her that she cooks like a woman well beyond her years and I meant that in a good way. She just gets right in there like us that have been cooking for our family longer than she’s been around lol. She’s a joy to watch 😊
@@JuliaPacheco you’re fun to watch and have great ideas and I’m so happy for your success with your TH-cam channel. You should be so proud and your girls are so adorable 🥰
My mom tought me that grease tip when i was younger too! Another hot oil tip for those that need to drain it somewhere; line a bowl or cup with tin foil, pour the hot oil in that. Once the oil cools and re solidifies, you can just toss the tinfoil in the trash! If it doesnt solidify, once it cools, put it in a ziplock and throw it away. My friend showed me that years ago and it was a game changer for me 😊
That’s awesome! And thank you so very much for that great tip about hot grease. I appreciate that too! Have a wonderful rest of your day and thanks for watching🙌🏼
I've been using an egg slicer go chop eggs by cutting the egg twice...once the long way and once across. Your way is so much quicker and less messy. My teenage grandson lives with me and cooks mac and cheese from a box sometimes. Your hack is a perfect way to get away from the powdered "cheese" on the boxed products. I'll be passing on this great idea today. This video is great for new cooks. They don't teach what we called HomeEc in school anymore, which is too bad.
I am so very happy to hear that you will be able to use the cooling rack trick. Thank you so very much for your positive comment about that and I hope your grandson enjoys this new version of mac & cheese. Thank you so very much for watching🙌🏼🙌🏼
I'm a line cook and these are fantastic tips! My parents never taught me to cook and I started working at restaurants in my 20s so that I could learn :) I'm so happy you made this video so inexperienced cooks can feel more confident.
Well thank you so very much for your positive comment. I’m so happy to hear that you figured out a way to teach yourself and I really do appreciate your kind words here🙌🏼
Hi Julia, all great tips. I've burnt my hands more than once from draining something from the microwave, getting my mitts wet and then taking something out of the oven. When I first got married, I use to drain my chopped meat in the colander lined with paper towels when I was making meat sauce. Then if finally dawned on me one day to just wipe the pot with the paper towels. Live and learn. That mac and cheese looks great, I'll have to try that. Thanks for sharing all these mistakes which we all make, one time or another. Stay well and safe.💜
Yes! That definitely happens to in the microwave with the steam. Ugh! It really only takes one time to get burned with a wet oven mitt. Ha ha!Thank you so very much for your positive feedback and I appreciate you💜💜
The first suggestion to use your cooling rack grids to easily chop boiled potatoes and eggs is genius! @ 9.26 Ick! I always rinse my fresh fruit in a collander but never captured the water to see how dirty they were. Oh dear! I use the green bags to keep my fruit and vegetables fresher longer, but I'll definitely add this tip. Many thanks.
Thank you so very much, Debbie! I appreciate your positive feedback about using the cooling racks. It’s definitely an easier way to go about it. Thanks so very much for your positive comment and I hope you have a great rest of your week💜🙌🏼
Yes, as a 72 year old and retired Dietary Manager, I know how the water on pot holders works. Things like this was taught by my Mom. I think my favorite hint to use is the papertowel soak up of grease after cooking ground meat! I've been doing that since you demo'd doing in a Dump and Go casserole recipe! I had been saving in jars and then disposing the jars. I think this is much better! Easy too!

1st of all I totally made the wet pot holder mistake too, lessons learned the hard way have a way of sticking lol. 2nd you saved me this morning. I was sipping my tea watching your video and when it came to the bean segment I realized I forgot to get the baked beans going in the crockpot. If I had forgotten again I don't think my kids would forgive me! I forgot to make them the last time we were supposed to have them at dinner. Thank you Julia 😊

I love all the cooking and kitchen ideas. Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks!? I'm 60 and you taught me some very good new tricks! I especially love the egg and the fresh fruit tricks! I found all of them very useful. Thanks Julia. Love from Texas ❤
I have been cutting my chicken breasts in half horizontally since I started watching you and it really does make it cook better! I also started absorbing the ground beef grease with a paper towel and that works amazingly too! I will definitely be trying some of the other hacks you mentioned!
I am so happy to hear that this has helped you so much! Thank you so much for sharing that and I really do appreciate you and your loyal support here, Carrie🙌🏼🙌🏼
As much as I love and use your cooking vids, I just as equally love these different vids, too. I've already decided to get several of the tools you mentioned in your last video and now I've just gotten into this one and that egg-slicing trick is worth the price of admission alone. Just loved the tip your Mom gave you about using the paper towel to mop up the grease from the chopped meat! My Mom taught me to pour it into an empty soup can or paper cup and freeze it until garbage day LOL One new hack I want to share that shocked me is to put whole avocados that are just slightly ripe into a covered container of water and keep them in the refrigerator! two weeks on they are still perfectly fresh! Some great tips, even for seasoned cooks. My favorite is the paper towel to absorb the grease. I usually keep my discarded grease in a coffee can in the freezer until it's full. But i like the paper towel idea much better. 👍 I really dont use a crockpot much, but doI want to start using it more. I do ALWAYS sear my meat before braising it on the stove or in the oven, though. It gives such wonderful flavor. I make a no peek oven roast very similar to your crockpot one. It is my oldest daughter and her husband's favorite. I sear my meat well on both sides (sometimes i cut slits and poke some garlic in too), i put it in a baking pan and pour a little Worcestershire sauce over the top, then a half pkg of italian dressing seasoning mix, and a pkg of low sodium beef gravy, then i flip the roast over and do the same on the other side. Then i add onions all around (as many as i can), then cover tightly first with 1 layer of foil, and then again with another layer. Put it in a 375/400 degree oven for 1 hour, then turn my oven down to 375 or 350 and go 2 more hours before peeking. Once the roast is done (nearly falling apart), i take it and the onions out to rest and make a gravy with the drippings. It is THE BEST roast, in our opinion. It's my version of a Mississippi Pot Roast, but i didn't like the ranch seasoning or the pepperoncini's. And it was also way too salty. So I edited it for my family. The Worcestershire sauce takes it up a whole other level. And if you like onions cooked with a roast, they're great. Soooooo good. I don’t add potatoes or carrots, though.I've done that once and personally think it detracts and changes the flavors too much for this particular roast. I usually make both mashed potatoes and egg noodles with it because we can never decide. And some mixed veggies or a salad. Try it this recipe sometime. I think you'll love it as much as we do. I also love the mac n cheese. It's so much better than the boxed stuff. And just as easy, really. 👍
Thank you so very much for sharing that wonderful recipe!! That sounds so good and I really appreciate your tips. Thank you so much for your positive feedback too and I am so happy to have you here is one of my supporters💜💜
Food science major here, cook with oil and finish with butter since oil has a higher smoke point and butter tends to burn (but can brown if added at the right time!). Love your videos and best wishes to everyone who cooks for themselves/their loved ones/just to feed others! ❤

I’ve been using my meat masher to chop up boiled eggs for egg salad as well as cutting cooked potatoes for potato salad. It works great, cuts everything into small bites.
The lemon/vinegar trick is great. Little things like that helped me help my mom to lose over 50lbs in less than 6 months. All of her numbers are in check and didn’t “diet”. Just little changes at all meals. Also, the meat mashed thing looks awesome. I hate touching ground turkey- even with gloves on😂- so this would be ideal for turkey meatballs. Thank you!
Well thank you so very much and congratulations to you and your mother! That is awesome news that you’ve been able to lose weight and not necessarily diet. Thank you so much for your positive feedback and I am so happy to have you here as one of my subscribers, Alice💜💜
I can’t find the fruit containers in your Amazon link 😭 but I’m definitely going to look for that and start doing the baking soda and vinegar thing with my berries. I’m so tired of tossing half eaten containers of strawberries.
I’m not sure why. You never know what is going on! I just looked right now and I went to my video 20 favorite Amazon kitchen cooking and organization items that I just did and scrolled down to the actual name of the item. So fruit veggie prep containers and clicked on that and it was available. I hope this helps and thank you so very much for watching🙌🏼💜
I want to thank you for your recipes! They save me so many nights, and your recipes are absolutely delicious! My kids have different tastes and they all love everything I’ve made so far.
Love your channel! Just started doing the soak for the berries and fruits - definitely a game changer! Also I would encourage your family to ditch the canola oil (and seed oils in general) - food tastes lighter and it’s better for you. ❤
So many great tips and hacks. Some of them I have already incorporated into my cooking routines from watching your previous videos. How great to have them all in one video!
Thank you so kuch for these tips. I especially like the Mac and cheese one. Anyone who comes up with an alternative to boxed or frozen already made full of salt, is a very good cook and interested in really helping us to be healthier. ❤
That hard boiled egg hack blew my mind. I always try to get them really small for egg and macaroni salad because it is better that way. This will save me some cutting time. Awesome!!! ❤😊
I miss your cute salt and pepper shakers. My grandmother collected them. Great idea on the cutting up eggs. When I was a young married and learning to cook. I did what you did BUT I ended up burning the inside of my hand. it took quite awhile for it to heal. your girls are getting so big. I liked seeing your "helpers" in your shorts.

Thanks for sharing . Also when soaking dried beans overnight you can can put a teaspoon of baking soda in . That will help with gas. Love watching you.
I have done the pot holder thing before, once. Learned that lesson myself. That’s a great idea for the eggs. I love salads with egg. But I don’t want to cut them up. And the Mac and cheese sounds great. I love it. And I’m sure my grandkids would too. I usually cook my chicken in just oil. I will add butter to my pan next time.

Thank you for sharing these great hacks with us! I also wrap my celery and carrots in paper towels to keep them fresh longer. I hope you have a blessed week Julia! 💕
Thanks for the tips, Julia! I absolutely love the paper towel grease trick...ever since I first saw it on your channel, I have used it quite a bit. Usually I drain my grease by placing a colander over a bowl, pouring the cooked meat in and giving it a rinse. Then I dump the grease outside (we live in the country). But, if the grease level of my meat is more moderate to minimal, I am so happy to use the paper towel trick! Also, I always rinse all my produce in vinegar water as soon as I get home from the grocery store. For apples and oranges and banans, I usually scrub them with soap and water also after they soak. Lots of dirt comes off of stuff, and I agree it makes stuff last longer. I notice this particularly with fresh broccoli...after soaking in vinegar water, I rinse, cut the florets off the stalk and store in a paper towel lined gallon ziploc in my crisper. It stays good for a really long time.
Wow! I am so happy to hear that you have enjoyed those tips. Thank you so much for sharing that and sure do appreciate the extra tips that you added here. Thank you so very much again and I hope you have a great week💜🙌🏼

Hi Julia!!! Thanks for all the good tips. It's very hopeful for everyone. My fav is the paper towel tip. I never did that all these years but now I do!!! Really good tips. Great video my friend!!!...🦋
I use an egg slicer to dice up eggs for egg or potato salad. Slice them one way in the slicer, pick up all the slices, give them a quarter turn and slice again. Now they are diced.
Love that egg hack never seen that before! Definitely going to try. I use fruit wash for my strawberries and grapes. I feel vinegar makes them sour. We had 11 pounds of strawberries and very few went bad. I read to rinse dry and put them loosely covered in a glass bowl with paper towels. It was perfect!

Yes, I also use the egg slicer two ways but I thought using the cooling rack with a grid was just nit for me. Much easier to clean my slicer! It not a big deal when cutting 4 eggs to use a slicer - but perhaps if making lots of egg salad using more than 4 eggs, the grid will work just fine.

Ha ha!Thank you so very much for your positive feedback and I appreciate you💜💜
@@JuliaPacheco I appreciate you too.
A lot of the younger Mothers taught the basics of the kitchen, because they were so busy to really get in there and teach the daughters like the Mothers of my day when they stayed home. Thanks for helping all the young people with your hacks and your channel.
I think my favorite hint to use is the papertowel soak up of grease after cooking ground meat! I've been doing that since you demo'd doing in a Dump and Go casserole recipe! I had been saving in jars and then disposing the jars. I think this is much better! Easy too!
That’s awesome! I am so very happy to hear that this trick has helped you so much. I will let my mom know! Thank you so much for your positive support, Gillian💜💜
Hi Julia! Thanks for the berry hack because I hate when my fruit goes bad before I get to eat them all. I’ll definitely be trying that one soon! Also, I love that paper towel trick. I use it all of the time now 🥰
I sure hope it works for you and thank you so very much for your positive comment about these hacks💜🙌🏼
The paper towel method of removing grease from the plan has been a game changer! Love the kitchen hacks!
I’m really so happy to hear that. Thank you so much for your positive comments and feedback🙌🏼
Im 53, my husband did all the cooking, but he is in recovery from cancer and julia you taught me how to cook, thank you! These are awesome tips! 💯
I am so very sorry to hear your husband is dealing with cancer. I am sure that is very difficult for both of you💜I am happy to hear that my videos have helped you in some way. That really does mean a lot to me to hear that. Thank you so very much and I sure hope that your husband continues to recover!🙏🙏
Wow, Julia, this video was so interesting and full of wonderful tips and tricks. I loved the homemade mac and cheese one. I always do the paper towel one that I learned from you long ago. Hi to Will and the girls. You all have a great new upcoming week and stay healthy, my dear one.
Thanks so very much, Cindy! I hope you enjoy that homemade macaroni and cheese and I’m glad you were able to use the paper towel trick too. I sure will say hello to my family for you and thank you so very much for your love and support💜💜

Yes! Once you do it, you will not do it again. And I am so happy to hear that you remembered to do the beans. I have done that so many times! Thank you so very much again for watching and I hope you have a great rest of your day🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

You taught me the paper towel hack and I use it all the time now. I'm 57 and never thought of it and I cook alot.
That’s wonderful! Thank you so very much for your positive feedback about that trick, Kay💜💜
I have been cutting my chicken breasts in half horizontally since I started watching you and it really does make it cook better! I also started absorbing the ground beef grease with a paper towel and that works amazingly too! I will definitely be trying some of the other hacks you mentioned!

Excellent tips!! Thanks Julia for all you do!!

As much as I love and use your cooking vids, I just as equally love these different vids, too. I've already decided to get several of the tools you mentioned in your last video and now I've just gotten into this one and that egg-slicing trick is worth the price of admission alone. I was going to make egg salad today so the hack couldn't have come at a better time. Love you, Kiddo!

I loved this video - I did not get a meat thermometer until well into my 40’s and wish I’d bought it ages ago! My other suggestion is a good kitchen scale - so handy!❤
That is a great tip. I appreciate that! And yes, a good meat thermometer is so important. Thank you so much for your positive feedback!🙌🏼

Well thank you so very much! I’m so happy to hear that you found that tip useful and I sure hope you enjoy that mac & cheese🙌🏼
I'm not throwing out avocados anymore, YAY!!!! Great tips, Julia, Thank you!
Do you mean the covered container has just a bit of water in it with the avocado or do you mean to cover the avocado with water in a covered container?
Thank you so very much, Liz! It is a pretty good hack. And thank you so very much for sharing that avocado trick. I really do appreciate that and have a great rest of your week🙌🏼
@@bethbrec I actually use a plastic container that originally had my collagen supplement in it. It will hold about 4 medium avacadoes, and had a screw on lid. I submerge them completely. It really is amazing how long they stay fresh! I was also told to buy avocados that still have

Some great tips, even for seasoned cooks. My favorite is the paper towel to absorb the grease. I usually keep my discarded grease in a coffee can in the freezer until it's full. But i like the paper towel idea much better. 👍
I really dont use a crockpot much, but doI want to start using it more.
This video (& many others) is the reason I highly recommend your channel to my kids.
Food science major here, cook with oil and finish with butter since oil has a higher smoke point and butter tends to burn (but can brown if added at the right time!). Love your videos and best wishes to everyone who cooks for themselves/their loved ones/just to feed others! ❤
Well thank you so very much, Megan for your great tip! I sure do appreciate that so much and I appreciate your positive comment too. Have a wonderful rest of your week and thank you for watching💜🙌🏼🙌🏼

I’ve been using my meat masher to chop up boiled eggs for egg salad as well as cutting cooked potatoes for potato salad. It works great, cuts everything into small bites.
That’s great! Thank you so much for that great tip too and have a great rest of your week🙌🏼
I did what you did BUT I ended up burning the inside of my hand. it took quite awhile for it to heal. your girls are getting so big. I liked seeing your "helpers" in your shorts.

For the grease tip, what about if you don’t have paper towels? Sometimes they aren’t always on hand for our household.
Great tips! Ill try that mac amd cheese trick for sure. We did something similar by using the box brand and adding more shredded cheese and the powdered cheese but then add canned evaporated milk. Im not sure why, but its so creamy and good!!

Thank you for sharing these great hacks with us! I also wrap my celery and carrots in paper towels to keep them fresh longer. I hope you have a blessed week Julia! 💕
Thank you so very much! I didn’t think about that with carrots and celery. That does help a lot!🙌🏼

I use an egg slicer to dice up eggs for egg or potato salad. Slice them one way in the slicer, pick up all the slices, give them a quarter turn and slice again. Now they are diced.
Yes! That is also a great way to do it. Thank you so very much for sharing that💜🙌🏼
Love that egg hack never seen that before! Definitely going to try. I use fruit wash for my strawberries and grapes. I feel vinegar makes them sour. We had 11 pounds of strawberries and very few went bad. I read to rinse dry and put them loosely covered in a glass bowl with paper towels. It was perfect!
I even use my meat chopper for sausage because I make a sausage dip and it’s perfect for any ground meat!

That is true! Thank you so very much, Sandy and I appreciate your positive comment🙌🏼
