Long story short Mario has been possessed by a lot of boo's when he was sleeping and then controlling his body and then commanding him to collect every Power stars of the Mushroom Kingdom, violently destroying everyone that gets in his way including his own brother and Princess Peach, and also a craft ton of Toad’s and Yoshi’s.
In other words Mario didn't become evil, he just was controlled by evil ghost that controls him to achieve their goals.
