Are you able to use the camera fullt while charging? Can you leave the camera to shoot a timelapse with a battery pack attached for extended battery life?
External power via USB C only works when camera is turned off (including with the usb-C adapter from canon. For power during a timelaps you need Canon DR-E6 DC Coupler).

Well I now feel stupid. I tried charging with an Anker wall charger (w/ Power Delivery and the USB-C cable that I use to run/charge my laptop with), but I didn't turn the camera off when I did that ... so I thought it didn't work. I definitely didn't get any indicator showing it was charge; it's a real shame if I can't charge and run the camera the same time; it would make studio shooting (or astrophotography with a lithium ion battery back attached) a lot nicer. I know if feels significantly less bulky. I’ll have to test it when I get home and use the exact same lens. I’m using the same lenses with adapter so it feels somewhat but not drastically lighter.
Hey Teesa, I just bought this camera and did a review for my channel which I will be posting soon and can confirm that it is definitely lighter than the 5DMKIV and feels really good in the hand and when I say really good I mean freakin freakishly good!! I definitely highly recommend you grab the R not to mention it has some cool features that the 5D cant even do! Great video Amanda by the way!! I have been planning to do some self-charging test too with some powerbanks and things so its good to see that my theory of it being able to charge with other things other than the $190 freakin adapter which Canon should have just thrown in with the camera in the first place works.
Cool video Amanda - and you're correct recommending Power Delivery. I have the same Anker power bank as you and that works. I have an RP not an R - and I've tested with 12 different power supplies; wall adapters from Apple, Anker, RAVPower, Nintendo. Power Banks from Anker (USB, Q3 and PD), Fxlion and a Satechi power monitor. The power monitor is cool - since it actually shows the amount of charge that's passing through the wire, so you can see that it's doing something! For the RP, it will only charge when given a USB C PD power source - but it was compatible with everything - since it only drew a modest 5V at 1.1A. No USB A to C combination worked. Q2/Q3 does not work (even though these were fine for 5V at 1.1A, no PD = not accepted)
baubergô alas I’ve just checked on mine - answer is NO! It charges with the camera off, but doesn’t provide power when the camera is on. £190 for a mass produced charger costing a few dollars to make seems too expensive. Have Apple bought out Canon?:-)

Use the macbook USBC cable if you're not able to get it working. I've used multiple cables but that is the only one that worked for me (I couldn't find my Canon USBC cable)
Is that Anker 45w output? Can u run camera out of it also not just charging? I've noticed that my 45w output laptop charger with USB C, powers up my canon (battery indicator turns grey from white) I have power bank 18w that only charges battery. Don't want to spend £100 on new power bank that will not power up as well.
The camera doesn't charge when I plug it in all my USB wall-charger with normal USB cable, but when I plugged it into my phone via the supplied USB type-C cable (the cable came with the camera in the box), it started draining my phone's battery, I suspect any powerbank that support USB type-C charging can charge the camera.
I have a 6D and can tell you personally that if you can afford the new R then that is what you should get as it has allot more features than the 6D does. That being said if it is not in your budget then the 6D (just make sure it is the MKII or you will miss out on the flip screen and dual pixel autofocus) is def a very capable camera!! :-)
If you're okay with the 11 AF points, no dual pixel af and just want a solid full frame camera then it should be enough for you. I had it for a couple of years and I kind of regret buying it. I just need more features and it wasn't cutting it for me.
I am planning to buy bg e22 grip for canon eos r, but hvae a question. I have canon 7d with grip but thre is a space between the camera and grip which shows that its is not westger sealed as the moisture and dust can go through camera battery compartment, any one can guide me wether it is the case with canon eos r grip or not? It is all in the cable. Using a USB c cable that has full spec will charge the EOS R even with a normal power bank. My EOS R would not charge as well on a PD bank and by accident (or laziness) I grabbed my Samsung T3 SSD USB C cable, plugged it in and it worked - the EOS R started to charge. I then plugged it into my PC usb powered hub (non Power Delivery) and it worked as well..! I then took my oldest USB Powerbank (5v 1.0Amp) and it also worked. I then took the USB C cable that I normally used on my phone and nothing worked..... I then did some online searching and realized that usb C has many many standards when it comes to the cables alone. Choose your USB C cable wisely and your EOS R will charge with almost any USB power bank old or new - mine does. Always look for full spec USB C cables.... Now pack in the power bank and go and take some photos! PS.. If you tether to your PC with USB C and it seems slow, use 10Gbps USB C cables for much faster transfer speeds as most USB C cables at the lower price point only transfer at USB 2.0 speeds (0.480 Gbps) and not at USB 3.1 Gen 2 speeds (10 Gbps = more than 20 times faster).

I think you need a battery in the camera still. Would be nice tho, b/c you could use it while charging the battery faster outside the camera. I don’t have this camera anymore to test it. I have the R6 and some things are very different with it
@@AmandaWoolsey the r6 has the same charging system. As far as I understand, it cannot be directly powered from a powerbank, like say goupro 11. And you need to buy some kind of special charging-a power supply, and only power from a 220v outlet it's a shame
i don’t think it’s a good idea to charge it with the mac adapter, it is 9v and many amps, neither with the fast charging adapter, too many amps kill the battery faster

For anyone watching this only works with the native battery! I was going crazy because it wouldn't work... I bought two different power banks, and two different cables. I switched out the battery (from lp6 from my canon 6d mii) into the native one that came with the R and it worked!
I can confirm this happened to me also with non canon batteries. Ironically I'm using a RAVPower 45W Super-C Series 20100mAh Portable Charger and their RAVPower batteries RP-BC003 won't charge in the EOS-R. Charging the original Canon LP-E6N works fine with that portable charger.
How many times you can charge you camera from powerbank? 26800 / 1860 = 14 times? Probably less due to lost of power but still - about 10 times? It is possible? So it is better to get powerbank that extra baterries?
About 4 Times. In canon batteries are connected in series, but in powerbank in paralell. So you because of different voltage you have to addidtionally divide by 2.

Hi peps, any power source for R5 Usb-c should have PD & at least 45W power! Thats why Mac charger works. Not every power bank is capable of delivering 45W even if it has PD. It's not rocket science. Read the manuals.

1. U must use PD powerbank
2. Must use type-c PD cable

You can use a dc dummy battery instead that powers via USB. Works well with the battery grip, I tested the aukey 20k mah power bank. Works.

Only one big problem. If i turn the camera on it doesn't charge anymore. It has to be turned off to accept power from usb c.
