Ricky Skaggs is such a great Bluegrass legend. Him along with Kentucky Thunder sound absolutely fantastic. Even with the Boston Pops Orchestra this song is really great. Thanks for posting.
Brilliant, brilliant, Brilliant! Leave it to a visionary like Ricky Skaggs who's fought like crazy his whole life to put bluegrass music on the map, to meld it with the Boston Pops - and still make you say: "Wow". (And they may neither be God nor the Devil.. perhaps from another planet and a civiliztion light years ahead of our own.) Either way.. it's nice stuff.
Just a few among hundreds out there. Spend some time listening to a dozen other top shelf-ers and you can then spread your "amazing" to the folks who equally deserve such gushing!
I'll skip over this re-make of Red-Haired Boy which leans too heavily on the latter tune and needs more imagination to take me somewhere. But Leftwich's work is a knockout and worth the time to listen. I wish someone would take some air out of his ego and convince him to find a really good lead singer that he can provide tenor for. His voice makes me feel nothing. Same for his picking. Nice notes but he doesn't take me anywhere inside and when he does it's not a place I've never been before. Music should "transport" the listener - same for all the arts.
David thanks for your reply I have a PhD in musicc from Temple U and have majored in voice doing lots good wishes for lots and lots of work you have a fine taste and great arrangements
talent with a capital T. Whether it's Jimmy Mills, Cody Kilby, Andy Leftwhich.... it's amazing how Ricky always seems to fine the finest talent for his band
the banjo came from the sitar, when the travelers left India they had no assess to gourds so they made banjos. gypsies came from India a long time ago, went to Ireland and then America, and we still make the best music.
I love the old songs of bluegrass because they come from Scotland and Ireland. My dad was from Eastern Ky. and taught me the history of bluegrass. It is not country music which I do not like.
I'm amazed not that much by his playing as by his level of improvising. I think anyone in that orchestra could play his parts , but to improvise like that you really need different kind of practise and a lot of tallent
Think of how many times this particular song was played before this, same band the entire time, amazing musicians, they definitely had it down to T. Haha
Bluegrass is the historic blend of Celtic music and African American instruments like the banjo. The legacy of slavery in America stinks, but without that legacy, our music would be much poorer. Too bad that the banjo was despised by most blacks after it became associated with the minstrel shows, which basically mocked all black people.

You ought to know better than talk about great blue grass music and Ricky & The Thunder that way. You sound like a teenager that just discovered blue grass .. Bill Monroe is rolling over in his grave!!!!!
THIS is why I Love this Platform even if they censor. Music the true God.
Jim really kicks it into overdrive!! Plus one of the nicest guys you'll meet.
One of the coolest tunes I ever heard....
I feel fortunate to have landed here from somewhere.
Everyone keeps talking about the banjo solo... uh... did you guys miss the fiddle solo? WOW! He killed it!
WOW Andy Leftwich is AMAZING! All of the musicians are. So smooth!

This could be the greatest instrumental ever written!

No one can make that fiddle sing like Andy Leftwich!! Absolutely amazing!

Phenomenal. Superb musicianship transcends genres.
Oh yeah, 2 people transcend common sense....

@CRAWF0RDBURNS1 Damn right! Jim Mills is the freakin' man, and this break sure pulls out a lot of his drive.
Playing this tune is as easy as pie for those gentlemen. Mother....ers!
David Powell Thumbs Up to you. Excellent

Outlaw country is the only country worth checking out at all, more real than any other country, bluegrass tops it completely for me tho.
This is like the missing link between Celtic and Bluegrass.
There is no missing link, they are directly connected.
reminds me alot of the banjo in kentucky mandolin of bill monroe
The classical flautist looks like he's having a ball during the solos...
the dude on the flute looks like the dude in Jurassic Park

The name of the fiddle please ?

Put the pop's to shame Listen to that Driving Banjo
yeah cody is only 27 or28 and can play mandolin and fiddle. cody is like 27 or 28 and can play guitar, and mandolin.
