I think she focused on the development of her 'marimba shoulders' a little too much and her musical talents rather too little!! I note she was attending a medical school at the time - I sincerely hope she didn't fit in some extra 'percussion practise' on incoming patients.

I believe some people got saved from the orchestra and audience that day.

Anyone visiting years later may find it interesting that she spent only a few hundred dollars between this outfit, marimba lessons, and shoes/accessories. She also wore the same outfits every pageant unlike many other contestants. The mallets she used here were borrowed as was the swimsuit she wore for that part of the competition. Her evening gown was homemade. As a top ten finalist, she took home nearly $20k in scholarships between the state and national pageants. While the performance is iffy, she sold the hell out of it and anyone familiar with pageants knows the talent portion is more about empowerment and uniqueness than about giving the world’s greatest performance. It’s fun to meme, but she did do all this as a 4th year medical school student, going on to complete her MD and becoming a radiologist.

The banjo player, Jim Mills went home to be with the Lord about two weeks ago. He was so good and by all accounts a wonderful fella. Always up front about his love for the Lord. Maybe there's some pickin' in heaven after all.

I saw him live circa 1980 with Emmy Lou Harris as her main guitarist before Albert Lee took over and ricky went solo. Just incredible. did you know Ricky was the session guitarist on Dylan's Nashville Skyline. THis video is what America ought to be. Unity.

Grew up listening to my Mom and her brother play this song, all my life! Mom played guitar, uncle played banjo! It's 2024 and still love this song!

I love this video!!! I listen to it over and over. It's one of my very favorites, and It doesn't get much better than that.

Ricky at the end of the song is exactly how I feel: "Huh-HO!" This is a dream come true for me as a classically trained pianist and violinist who also has deep family history in Eastern Kentucky bluegrass. I love both and to put them together with good arranging is to create musical heaven. Kudos to Ricky for his music and his faithfulness; honored to have him as a distant cousin on Mom's side.
