I love the way you teach! Not goofy or obnoxious! Slow, but not too slow and detailed enough to encourage people to try; seems like this can be a family activity for all ages. Thank you!
Pete...you are the best!. I made a couple of your wine racks in my apartment..of course on the balcony. And gave them away as gifts. Keep up the good work...and keep the videos coming!...lol
Travertine Stones... Try this... in the little tiny holes, put a tiny bit of glue in them, then put gold leaf in that... it looks like a "Gold Strike" or you can put gold nail polish in the crevasse or holes too. The gold foil looks real... Thanks for the great video/tutorial
Thanks so much for sharing this video! I immediately subscribed to your channel after watching this! And I really appreciate you putting a detailed list of the supplies needed right in the description box!
+djAnakin That's awesome! Glad the project went well and thanks for letting me know. I'd love to see some project photos! Feel free to post them to the page at facebook.com/diyprojectswithpete -- or if you don't have Facebook shoot me a message using the contact page on diypete.com and I'll get back to you with a place to send in photos. Cheers!
+Vinnie C Hey Vinnie! Of course man, glad you are out and feeling better! If you are thinking about getting into vlogging / online business I have two recommendations to start learning. First, listen to the SmartPassiveIncome Podcast by Pat Flynn. It is free and awesome. I went from making my 1st dollar online in 2011 to making a full time income because of his help. Also, check out the video creators TH-cam channel with Tim Schmoyer. He is a great resource for learning about TH-cam. Lastly, I'll be coming out with an online course in Q1 of 2015 that I think you'll find helpful. I'll let you know when it's out. Have a great week!
Thanks for sharing this video! I made some coasters with decoupage technique. I sealed the surface with Mod Podge for 4-5 times. After one week, I used Dupli-Color Varnish and let the tiles to cure for a week. Then when I put a very hot mug on the tile, it didn't stick but there was a deep circle. Could you please tell me what the problem was?
Hey Bryce, I hope all is well in Sioux Falls! Great to hear from a SoDak! I grew up in Aberdeen, went to college in Lincoln, NE, and now live in MT. My roommates were from Sioux Falls and I have quite a few friend living there. Great place! Hope all your projects are going well!
Hi Pete. Great video! Can you please tell me if Krylon Crystal Clear (Acrylic Coating 1303), would work to seal travertine tiles? After sealing, do you need to bake in an oven, or can the coasters be used after sealing with the spray? Also, are these coasters ok to use with hot/cold beverages? I have been researching many diy coaster projects on TH-cam, Pinterest, Google, etc... And many people have problems with the coasters sticking, etc.... Thank you.
Hey Pete! Thanks for the awesome videos.. I came across your vids when i was searching for concrete planters.. :-) I have a question for you - what's an alternative for mod podge? I'm in India and don't think I'll get that here, though I'll go looking for it. Cheers!
Only question I have is that most coasters have a raised ridge on the perimeter to catch condensation from spilling out onto the table. Do these have that problem, or is the material extra absorbent that it's not an issue?
I have done this project and the outcome was perfect. The only thing is anything that I put on the coaster (cups, glasses, cans and bottles) they stick to the coaster but they aren't sticky or anything. Why does this happen? Thanks
Came here to ask the same thing. I made these over the weekend. Spray sealed them Saturday night and let them cure more than 24 hours. Monday morning, I tested one out with a mug of tea and the mug stuck and damaged the finished when I pulled it off. Are these actually useable?
Hi! I’ve been making these tiles for awhile now! Unfortunately the packs of travertine tiles I’ve brought from my local hardware store recently have a lot of holes in them... I know that’s part of giving the coaster some “character”- but the last 3 packs I’ve bought had so many holes that it messed up a lot of the pictures I put on them... Do you know how or what to use to fill in the holes on these type of tiles to where they will still be a durable coaster??
What kinda sealer if wanted to do this on tile for bathroom design? Am doing guys bathroom with old mustang car & throwing in some images of pin-up girls.
I know I'm late but can I brush them with polyurethane to seal. I don't want to have to buy mod podge if I don't have to. I already have the polyurethane.
Hi! I haven't ever tried. As long as the image goes on well, then I'd say give it a shot and experiment. Maybe do a test coaster so you don't wreck a good photo. Let me know how it goes.
+Marcos Lopez Hey Marcos, I do know that mod podge is surprising similar to white elmers glue, but a little more watered down. You might try slightly watering down some of that, I recall it dries clear as well.
Thanks, Elmers Glue I can get here in Mexico, with the explanation that you do, I think a brand of glue of regular use here in Mexico may serve me is thicker, thanks again, please sorry my english is poor, but your videos are fantastic, im your fan... Saludos hasta Montana...
+Marcos Lopez Gracias Marcos! Your English is very good! I wish I spoke more Spanish. Have a great weekend Amigo, and thanks for taking the time to watch the videos! - Pete
Hi! I used this one ( you can get it or something similar locally usually at home depot or one of the hardware stores ) www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-7701830-Stops-12-Ounce-Crystal/dp/B0010NY95S/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1449785022&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=rustoleum+enamel+saler&linkCode=sl1&tag=diypete2-20&linkId=6fdcc94e82902a5778ad696de3139c7e
+Shane Collier Hey Shane! I got them at Home Depot. If you don't have a Home Depot I'm sure you'll be able to find something similar at another home supply store. They are a "travertine style" tile.
Dear Pete: I made some of these coasters for some kids families I coach as gifts with our team label on them. Couple of questions:1) I love the type of tile you use because it has a great look to it. I tried filing the imperfections in the tile with Mod Podge but it seems like it doesn't really get in the cracks and it would take 5-6 coats to probably level them out. Is there something else I could use or should a I just go get flat tiles and call it a day?2) The bigger problem and I followed your steps exactly and used the exact materials you used is that the when I apply the spray sealer it dries like in video. Then I apply for tiny felt pads to the bottom side. So after letting them dry (now for days at a time after applying several sealer coats) I had them stacked and was about to give them as gifts. Well when I looked them over one last time the felt pads on bottom of coasters had left 4 permanent felt marks on each of the coasters. So I redid the sealer step again let it dry for a week and sadly 4 more felt spots ended up on the coasters when I stacked them. Is there something else I can use to stop this from happening? I looked at maybe getting epoxy resin but the spray stuff is so much easier to use if it actually hardened and I didn't get those felt marks. Spray resin out there I could use?Any feedback you could provide with links to materials would be greatly appreciated.
Hi J, great to hear from you! If you want to fill the voids you could fill them with grout. I used these because I like the look and the voids didn't cause any issues -- but you could either fill -- or simply buy tiles without them. I haven't had that issue with the marks - did you use the same sealer after the mod podge? Have a good day!
Yes I used the exact same sealer you used in your videos. Every single time I stack the coasters the same thing happens over and over. I've been just throwing another coat on them which gets rid of the 4 spots but I'm afraid to give these to folks if they're all going to have marks on them. Is there a better sealer out these (price isn't a concern) that hardens fairly solid I could get instead the Rustoleam? Thanks again for your response and if you can think of a good sealer that hardens pretty strong I'd appreciate it.
I love the way you teach! Not goofy or obnoxious! Slow, but not too slow and detailed enough to encourage people to try; seems like this can be a family activity for all ages. Thank you!
Thanks so much Jane! I appreciate you :) Cheers!

Greetings to a fellow South Dakotan! I am from Sioux Falls!

Where do you get these tiles from ? Lowe’s, Home Depot, special tile shop? Thanks so much!!!!
Any of those options you just stated will work! I ordered some from Home Depot myself if that helps
I like this easy method to making coasters
+denis dauber Thanks Denis!
Have you ever poured resin on top of the coasters? I have done it on tiles and it gives it a nice look.
+Gina Yarbrough (Craftstar15) Hi Gina! I have not, (just on bar tops) - but it sounds like a great idea! Thanks!
cant wait to do this!!
Go for it!
Here I am in Oakes North Dakota learning how to make some coasters :)
Small world! I grew up in Aberdeen, a little over an hour from Oakes, ND. Hope all is well in Nodak!

+Janak Samtani Hi Janak! I've heard people use normal white glue like Elmer's glue -- and watering it down a bit. Let me know if that helps!
love it

cool project pete...
+Tito Wambuch Thanks Tito! When are you going to start making videos too, friend? Cheers!
+DIY PETE I am honoured. As for the videos I will make them as soon as I get hold of a good camera or a high quality cell phone. cheers, friend!

Awesome! I would like to make them with wood, would it work in the same way as with the tile? Thanks Pete!
Hi! I haven't made them out of wood but I don't see why it would work!
where do you purchase your tiles
Where do you get your tiles?
Thanks for sharing
Cheers!
So that's three coats of mod podge and then sealer?
Can you youse this method with wood coasters as well
And using stickers rather than just paper
wow I'm going to try this!:)
Awesome!
Did them! :D

your spray that your using is it heat resitent?
Hi there, worked fine with a hot coffee mug on it.

Anyone know which is the equivalent of mod podge materials in Mexico, gracias
+Marcos Lopez Hey Marcos, I do know that mod podge is surprising similar to white elmers glue, but a little more watered down. You might try slightly watering down some of that, I recall it dries clear as well.

I've done these, and for some reason when i put a hot mug on the coasters, the mug sticks to the coasters.
Hi! Yeah, the sealer chosen will definitely make a big difference. Did you do a sealer over the mod podge?
Yes, I used a Krylon clear coat
Need to use a heatproof sealer if using hot mugs.
This looks great! Does this method work with polished tiles as well, or do the tiles need to be unpolished for this to work well?
Hi! I would think it would work fine, but I have not tried myself.
DIY PETE I just tried it and it does work! I made a ton of them 😂
did your cups stick to the coaster?
Haven't had that issue.
You can also use Rubber bumpers for feet on your coaster
Thanks!
Can you use paper too?
Yep!
hi whats best to use to make them waterproof
A couple coats of spray sealer at the end helps a lot!
DIY PETE. thank you what type of spray sealer
DIY PETE. thanks
How is it against heat? Like for coffee mugs or a hot pan?
can u use paper napkins for your video?
I would recommend experimenting
Can you use printed photos or is that material not appropriate?
Hi! I would do a test photo first as I'm not 100% sure. Best of luck!
where did you buy the tiles
+Shane Collier Hey Shane! I got them at Home Depot. If you don't have a Home Depot I'm sure you'll be able to find something similar at another home supply store. They are a "travertine style" tile.
You lived so in my state near me!

Awesome Ash! I was up in Missoula a few weeks ago. I love it up there! Hope all is well and cheers from Bozeman.
I am trying to set up my own personal business
Great to hear!
Liked these ideas. Just sayin' though, it's actually MOD PODGE (Not Modge Podge)
Thanks!
Have you tried this with baseball cards?
