DIY WOODEN COASTERS | Beginner and Intermediate Designs |

- In this video, I make two different types of WOODEN COASTERS. The beginner coasters are made with Hickory which gives the coasters a nice rustic look. For the intermediate level coasters, I used scrap wood from my shop. I glued together the different pieces of scrap wood and then ran the glue up through a planer. From this new laminated board, I cut out the coasters.

Nice work. 👌
Thank you!
I love the warm tone of that finish
Me too! I really love working with hickory.
Thanks for watching!
Love the video. Keep up the great work, can't wait for other videos!
Thank you! More on the way
Just getting my first miter saw and looking into doing my first coasters, this is going to help a lot.
Good luck with your first coasters! Let me know if you have any questions.
Really cool, too bad I don’t have a planer, they look very clean!
You could make these without a planer. Just start with lumber the same thickness you want your final coaster to be. Thanks for watching!
Just sand them.
Great video
Great video - Thanks for posting!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching
Really quality video
Awesome hustle
Appreciate it
Thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge..
My pleasure!
Good job. I highly recommend a good microphone for a better quality sound
Thank you! I now have a mic and I think it has made a huge difference (but let me know what you think). I think this was the last video I made before I got a mic.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing, would hot glue work in place of double sided tape. Thanks
I have not tried this, but I would guess it would work! Thanks for watching!
How thick did you make ur coasters?
Usually about 3/4”
How do you make that coaster finish? Im thinking of getting into making coasters as a hobby, this was a great video full of great information thank you
Glad it was helpful! I will make a video soon on my coaster finish. Stay tuned…
Why didn’t you plane the wood first?
can you used a hand plane to do the edges of coasters? was looking at other type of scape wood you form factor board was that long one 1x4x8 foot?
Great video- what size (diameter) dowels were used?
I believe I used 1/2”
How do you price your coasters??
Couple of questions. What else could you use to seal the wood? i.e. a clear varnish or lacquer? Can you apply that AFTER the beeswax/oil mix?
Tyia!
Great questions! Any type of oil based finish will work great. Just don’t use a water based finish (like polycrylic) because water will eat at the finish. And of course since it is a coaster, it will be exposed to water.
I always apply wax last. The wax is less about sealing the project and more about giving it a great feel. Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes when you make your own coasters!
So have a miter saw and a few other tools but how do you make coasters without thousands of dollars in equipment
Well, you really only need a saw (table saw, miter saw, etc) and a sander. If you don’t have a planer, try to find some stock that is a thickness you would like for your coasters. I hope this helps!
What finish did you use?
A beeswax and mineral oil finish that I make in a crockpot. There is a video on my channel about how I make the finish. Hope this helps!
How long does the glue take to cure?
I think it takes 24 hours to completely cure, but you can usually start working with it after 4-6 hours. Hope this helps!
How much do you sell them for?
I usually sell them for $5 each. At craft shows, I sometimes throw in a set of two coasters if a customer buys a more expensive cutting board. Hope this helps!
How thick are they Thank you
I make mine roughly 0.75” thick. Thanks for watching
How thick? What size?
I believe these were 0.75" thick and 4" x 4". Hope this helps!
BEGINNERS have planers, drill presses, and table saws?????
Well, a planer and drill press is not necessary for this build.
@@Ben_Grimsley Even a table saw is not necessary. I have one, but I use my circular saw when I make coasters.
why not plane before cutting the boards up?
To be honest, because I was not thinking. When I was editing this video, I was like "why did I do that?" Just a silly mistake
How do you make the beeswax mineral paste?
I have a video on the channel where I show how I make it.
What are the de mentions of your coasters?
I think these were 4.25” x 4.25”
Thanks!
If It Wh'er Me I'd Use A Jack Plane
If I Cut Anything Small I Use A scroll Saw Or A Coping Saw.
What price range do you sell the basic set for?
Usually $20-$25 for a set of 4 coasters. I would up this to $30 if I include a holder. Hope this helps!
@@Ben_Grimsley Awesome, I have 4 very old oak 6' long true 4x4"s that I have been trying to figure out what to do with. I want to cut and seal them but try and preserve the natural patina. Thanks for the direction.
audio for this video was brutal
It was! Fortunately, I now have a mic. Thanks for watching!
Terrible music
