- I directed this spot with Tom, Patti Deutsch, Teri Garr and Penny Marshall. This was Tom's first and he was so terrific, I gave him the wardrobe. He told me many years later that it was his only suit and he wore it for every casting interview.
Patti, Teri and Penny had done very little work at this early point in their careers. It was a pleasure directing all of them. This commercial was written by Jackie End, a creative force at Wells, Rich, Greene in NY. She was a favorite client but sadly, she passed away in 2012. Too young, too soon. - บันเทิง
My mom had the biggest crush on Tom Selleck. She was always so excited when she found out he was on a new show or movie. Mom was about 75 when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. My sister and her husband lived in Idaho and they moved her in with them for the last 6 months of her life. Sometimes she wouldn’t know who my sister and her husband were, but she always remembered Tom Selleck. They bought the DVDs of all seasons of Magnum, P.I. to watch during the day, then switched over to Blue Bloods on TV at night. She was content doing that until the day she died.
I want to thank everyone for your thoughtful comments, which are truly appreciated. I had no idea so many would react to Mom’s story. I know many who have developed dementia or Alzheimer’s have had positive reactions to music, but I had no idea showing a favorite actor would produce such a wonderful result like it did with Mom. Again, thank you very much!

Oh my heavens... Tom was definitely out of this world, even in a commercial in the early 70s. I can't believe how young Penny, Patti and Teri were in this (long before they shot to fame themselves). What an ensemble cast that went on big things later on.

Before this commercial, Teri Garr guest starred on an episode of Star Trek called "Assignment: Earth" that was supposed to serve as the pilot for a new NBC series, but the network didn't pick it up. That was in 1968.
No doubt about it, Tom was the sexiest! I'm 70 and still watch the Magnum PI reruns! Hard to think how old we are now, but our minds are still young! Lol
I used to wait tables at the Hamburger Hamlet on Sunset Blvd in the 1970’s. Tom Selleck used to come to eat lunch after visiting his agent nearby. He was not yet famous but doing commercials and very impressive. I always looked at him and thought, “ Why isn’t this guy a HUGE star already?”
Tom wouldn't be caught dead in a Hamburger Hamlet. He always hung out at Jack in the Box

Y grandmother was so much in love with Tom sellick that when ever she heard the theme to Magnum P.I she would say “My Tommy is on” she would shuffle quickly to the living room just to watch the end of the song until he made his eyebrows go up and down and she would sigh with delight and sit down to watch the show and I agree he is still handsome now as he was back then my boyfriend reminds me of him and is as handsome and beautiful as he is

I was a teenager when I fell in with Tom, as soon as I saw this commercial! It was great to find out later that he is modest and has a good sense of humor about himself.
I actually worked as the editor on this spot. Boy, this brings back memories. Jackie was great and very creative.

I hate to disagree with any of you ladies about him looking better without his iconic mustache, but that mustache not only got him his own TV show Magnum PI, but other TV western movies. Old TV western shows with the men being completely clean shaven were not of the real men of the old west, just look at the old photos of real cowboys in the old west, as not just mustaches were common, but also beards.

Tom Selleck is the one reason why I watch Magnum P.I. and Blue Bloods and I never forgotten about him at all
My mom has always loved (and still drools over) Tom Selleck lol. I myself was never a fan of mustaches but Tommy always got a pass from me - he actually still looked pretty handsome imo, mustache or sans mustache.

I thought the way he grabbed women by the upper arms and pulled them close was so romantic. Now I have mixed feelings. He didn't have too many nice things to say about Stefanie Powers in his book and that's not fair; she was a great Mrs. Hart. She is still loyal to him and says he's a great guy. I have the feeling that deep down she suspects him of what happened to Natalie Wood.

I always thought Tom Selleck was handsome but that was the Magnum P.I. version until the present. This man was unbelieveablely gorgeous (even better looking without his mustache) earlier in his career but I was much too young to apprieciate it.

This is an amazing commercial. This was when commercials were like movies. Cinematic and mesmerizing. This would have had me really believe that an office Job like what Tom has here, was real and an ideal place to be in.

I love the slow pacing of the '70s, and even '80s, commercials. The narrator's voices are so great too.
In addition to commercials, there are two TV show intros that I love. I watch them every once in a while on TH-cam.
One is the intro and theme music to The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
The other is the intro to the "NBC Sunday Mystery Movie" show. I remember being a little tike, after my bath, in my pajamas with feet, sitting on the sofa with a bowl of popcorn with my little sister and mom watching it.
Such simple and dare I say better times. We've lost so many stars from when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s. Nice to look back and see these commercials now. Back then Id run to do anything but watch a commercial lol. Now I sit on TH-cam and watch them.. Funny how you never think about behind the scenes. Like that suit story. Who would have thought the actor in a commercial would need his wardrobe suit in real life back then.?? :)
Wow, I remember "Safeguard" soap commercials. We were strictly "Ivory" soap family. Handsoap do not last as long as they use too and they're more sudsy than I ever remember. Wow, remember when soap lasted a long time? Good commercial - several scenes that lead nicely into each other, rather than the fast past ones "now a days". Yup, I am now officially an "older person", "elderly", etc...😄😊💖
Yeah, but we don’t use hand soap basically anymore! I know we don’t! My husband and I are older, I’m 73 and he’s 63, and we use liquid soap in a bottle! I didn’t remember or even see perhaps the commercial of Tom Selleck advertising Safeguard!? Great commercial! I didn’t even notice it was Penny Marshall! And I don’t know those other women, though they look familiar. Great commercial! I always loved Tom Selleck, since Magnum PI! And I love him in Blue Bloods also! And I loved Tom in Quigley Down Under, etc.!!
Safeguards slogan used to be “it’s the smallest soap in the house.” I guess either because it was long lasting or because everybody used the same bar!
Maybe it isn't the soap. Perhaps you had hard water when you were younger, and soft water now.

I first took note of Tom Selleck in a Caress soap commercial, probably sometime after this because he had the mustache in it. I was particularly impressed by his movie star good looks and thought he should be making movies. The next time I saw him was in an episode of Taxi, and immediately recognized him from the soap commercial, thinking, "Good. He's on his way." Exceptional good looks and great acting talent, without any hint of the usual movie star vanity -- a most humble and gracious man.

Since you mentioned Jaclyn Smith and Farrah Fawcett, Tom Selleck played Kelly Garrett's (Jaclyn Smith) doctor boyfriend in an episode of "Charlie's Angels" during the first season. It was Season 1 Episode 5 called "Target: Angels".
Teri Garr was semi-known at the time. She had previously guest starred on Star Trek in 1968 in the episode called, "Assignment: Earth".

The awesome one I remember is this great dressed handsome guy, white cowboy Stetson hat on, get into this hot car, and drives away, It was a commercial for Stetson Cologne, featuring Tom Selleck, I almost fell off my chair when I first saw that commercial!!! I think it came before Magumn PI series started. Oooh La La! What a hunk. Been a fan ever since..

Magnum PI has been on reruns on the Hallmark Movies and Mysteries channel. They stopped it for their ~three month Christmas movie marathon, so I don’t know if he’ll return after the holidays.
