  • I love both of these Microphones. The Rode NT1 is now a classic in all home and professional recording studios, which I have owned for over 20 years now and the Neumann U87ai is a 100% classic studio microphone and is expected to be housed in any pro studio.
Today I thought I would make a quick video and compare the microphones with a vocal recording and see if I could hear any huge differences between the two of them. Please note, these microphones are completely different in cost too. Could you tell which was more expensive and why?!?!
Lets be clear, this is a fun and quick video and not intended for in-depth microphone review. I hope the video gives you some entertainment and also inspiration too.
    Happy recording to you!

Thanks for this comparison, and yes, the mention that once we start adding effects and mixing, the appartent purity of any mic goes out the window. I appreciate your humility.

I have an NT1 from around 2007. They are fantastic mics. My son recorded three albums with a single NT1.
I also hit 1000 subscribers in the past couple months. Congrats.

Enjoyed that - useful comparison. For your voiceover though I wander if you could do with generally using the heavier pop-shield on the SM7b (the A7WS - the other one that comes with it). Sounded a bit plosive (ironically when you were talking about pop shields!) to me. Could be my headphones of course. I tend to leave that one on all the time. Nothing wrong with good annuciation!

Nice comparison! I was never a fan of the NT1, and still ain't. It's an extremely bright microphone that I find doesn't take processing very well. It might fool one into thinking it's awesome in solo, but every time I tried it in the mix, it sounded thin. Just my two cents!
In truth, my favorite of all these mics was the one mic you used, but didn't test - the SM7B. :D Now, there's a workhorse!

Great insights. The SM7b for me is a rock go to for sure. Happy recording to you!
