Working with a Singer during a Vocal Recording Session - Live Recording Session
Recording Vocals and working with a singer in the recording studio!
So, Hello everyone! Working with a singer in the recording studio is as much exciting as it is nerve racking. Exciting because it usually means you are at the stage of a music project where you will capture the main element, the vocals, the story of the song. Nerve racking, because you are human and just want to get things done the best they can be, if not better. But its all a process so from experience you will can figure out yours and use it to perfect your recording sessions.
In this video, I wanted to show you some insights to working with an amazing singer/songwriter Ames who is a British Singer who came to me with her own track and ideas a few months back. I loved her demos and decided to help with the track thats in this video. I helped with producing the music, setting out the arrangement and as you can see in this video had her come in the studio to lay down the vocals for the song too.
I hope this video gives you some insights to working with a singer in the studio and also a few tips and advice along the way!
Happy recording to you! Martin

Thanks a lot for the video. This is my first time recording and I’m trying to record my upright piano with 2 SE8 mics, with a Scarlett audio interface and Ableton 12. Everything’s plugged in, cables are connected, but my DAW just isn’t picking up any audio. I’ve restarted, my audio input and output devices are the audio interface. The audio tracks are set to Ext in. It must be something wrong with my config settings but I can’t work out what!

Needs to be said more often. I spend a lot of time on music subs on Reddit and I see newer producers over and over saying "I've watched all the tutorials, read all the books, attended the seminars, why can't I make the music I want to make?" It's the MBA culture. The idea that you can tutorial your way to experience.

This really spoke to me - going through a GAS phase at the moment (which we all know is another word for expensive procrastination). Realising if ones music mightn't be understood without the vanishingly small difference between two preamps/mics/synths/eqs then your focus is completely in the wrong area - in the details and not in the story. I see GAS, at least in myself, as a sign of laziness. Time to get my arse in gear and compose! Thankyou for this video.

Hit the nail on the head - When I was 15/16 with a cheap Squier and a little amp that I plugged with a rudimentary cable into GarageBand on my iPad I used to write multiple songs a week consistently. 95% were useless, but that 5% yielded some very good material. Now, as a better musician, a better producer, with decent equipment, I find myself seeing that special 5% less and less... ...not because I'm worse, but because of all that outside noise, I'm too self critical to get past that first hurdle. The gear influencer thing is particularly bad in the guitar pedal community as I'm sure you know, and it's difficult to discern useful information from advertising. The only saving grace as a JC120 lover is that I'm not swayed by the 'authentic tube tone' bullshit - but show me a £500 Strymon reverb and it all starts to unravel 😅

Here's the main issue musicians are facing these days ,.... it's easier to make a video ABOUT MAKING MUSIC ... and have it viewed.... then it is to spend countless hours writing, recording and then producing a song which most likely will go nowhere.... admit it that's why you make this video. I was tempted to make a video on the same subject but it was in direction of stop making music and make videos about making music. That is of course if you want to make money from TH-cam in any realm of music

I wrestle with this all the time, but it's not just because of TH-cam. It's because I get ideas about more efficient setups, or things that can help with tracking or production. I try to put specific limits on "how much" specific gear I have. For example, a maximum of 4 basses, my outboard is limited to my rack space available (however I managed to find a way to fit more rack space last year). I also try to spend some effort considering what I don't need and can get rid of. For example, when I moved from UA Apollo to Presonus Studiolive, I decided to only work with stock Studio One plugins. Two years in and I've not added another plugin yet. I feel like I'm nearing the end of the gear buying phase. Just a couple more things on my list of nice to have extras, but I'm wrestling with specifics. On the bright side, I did manage to write a full album with my daughter since the start of 2022 and we're releasing singles now: open.spotify.com/artist/0PjA2f5kLHfelwZP3smWpF The full album is out May 3rd.

Thanks for this awesome video. Now here’s my question. I have a SoundCraft Signature 12MTK, and when I record just voice, I use a DBX 286S pre-processor. For my microphone to record only voice, I use a dynamic microphone Shure SM57. I invested in two other dynamic microphones, 2 Behringer XM8500. And then I have one audio Technica condenser microphone. My piano that I have is an upright Kawaii K500. With the microphones listed above, which one of those in your humble opinion would be the best to record my piano? I don’t have soundproofing, but my room does have carpet, and does have the removable ceiling tiles, so it makes it semi soundproof.

    • @meyerstreetrecords694
      @meyerstreetrecords694 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks for the comment! I would suggest and honestly speaking, try them all. And then listen back and use the one that you feel gives you the sound you are looking for. Its really the only way. If it was me and if the room is not too well treated, I would start with the SM57 as dynamics are great on piano and also do not eat too much of the room sound. I hope that helps and happy recording to you!

    • @meyerstreetrecords694

Yes I have in the past when trying different mics for a project. I personally like small diaphragm condensers on piano. Especially when the piano part is to sit in the mix rather than be a solo or have a bigger presence in a mix. The CC8's are very similar sounding to the Rode NT5's and Neumann KM184's. Keep in mind, the piano itself is just as important as the mic's too.

Nice comparison! I was never a fan of the NT1, and still ain't. It's an extremely bright microphone that I find doesn't take processing very well. It might fool one into thinking it's awesome in solo, but every time I tried it in the mix, it sounded thin. Just my two cents! In truth, my favorite of all these mics was the one mic you used, but didn't test - the SM7B. :D Now, there's a workhorse!

Enjoyed that - useful comparison. For your voiceover though I wander if you could do with generally using the heavier pop-shield on the SM7b (the A7WS - the other one that comes with it). Sounded a bit plosive (ironically when you were talking about pop shields!) to me. Could be my headphones of course. I tend to leave that one on all the time. Nothing wrong with good annuciation!

Are you using a matched pair on the C414?

I think the combination of both is really cool. It adds another layer of contrast. I've recently recorded a song where the intro is completely loose and when the rhythm hits I go to a click. I've also heard of people programing their metronome to increase in tempo as the song goes on. supposedly to mimic what tends to happen live. Very nice vocal by the way

And for those of you that don’t have gazillions to spend on mics. I highly recommend “Mic Mod” plugin. It’s really simple to use. You have an input side where you select from the list the mic you are using. For example if you have an SM57, you select that. Then on the output side you select from the dropdown menu any mic you wish and it adjusts to mimic it. There are a few controls to adjust proximity and tube saturation. But I’m well impressed with it. Turn an SM57 in to a Neuman u47 in one click. Haters will say you can’t beat the real thing. Paupers will say you definitely can 😂

I love this comment! I am all for plugins too. Drives me mad when I hear comments like you have to use the real thing. If that was the case the digital piano market would have failed, which it has not. The Car market would have failed and we would all be on horses still and we would all still be reading newspapers meaning the PC market would have failed. Joking aside. I simply say this, use whatever makes the sound you are looking for and do not buy anything that gets you in to pointless debt. Everything is always evolving. For me, recording with the mic collection I have is awesome and I enjoy it. Happy recording to you and thanks for the comment.

💯. BTW this video is perfect for me because by hearing the different results, it gives me some reference points to use said plugin with. So thank you for the great content. *new subscriber
