  • Robert Il Duke of Normandy had a complicated relationship with his father, William the Conqueror, and his brothers. William the Conqueor was Duke of Normandy before he conquered England and became king. When he died he split his lands and titles giving the Dukedom to Robert and the throne of England to his second son William Rufus. William Rufus and Robert made a pact, after extensive squabbling and a rebellion, that if either of them died without and heir that they would unite Normandy and England again- it it would go to whoever had survived.
    So Robert thought he would become king when William Rufus died in a hunting accident, but his youngest brother Henry I took the throne while Robert was away on a Crusade. Henry not only took the throne of England but also took Normandy as well and imprisoned Robert for twenty years. Robert died when he was 83 and was buried Gloucester Cathedral.

    Great video! I've always felt sorry for Robert. Definitely one of history's losers. Henry I did some pretty awful things, so perhaps we'd have been better off with a King Robert I. But then Henry I's reign eventually, in a roundabout way, gave us Henry II's reign, who was one of the best medieval kings we ever had.

    Thanks Evelyn. It seems like Robert Curthose was either extremely healthy or took good care of himself for others took good care of him since he lived to be 83.

      Amazing that he lives in to his 80s right?! There were people who did have robust health! And maybe being out of the battlefield and less stress helped 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

    I wonder what Starkey would make of it. Will the Conk abolished the Witan power to declare who would be king, instigating the regular inheritance rules as per for “other ranks of nobility”. Only for Will to leave his second son as king. Did Will see the Dukedom of Normandy as being more important than being king of England?

    • @EvelynEdwards
      @EvelynEdwards  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      This is a great question! The Dukedom of Normandy was considered incredibly valuable!!! Absolutely! More important 🤔 hmmm… but at his death it has been said that he wanted to disinherit Robert completely and he was talked in to splitting up the crown of England and the Dukedom between his two sons.

    • @anttibjorklund1869
      @anttibjorklund1869 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I remember hearing that the Normans had a way of inheritance wherein the eldest male got whatever the father had himself inherited (in this case Normandy) and whatever the father had gained in his life (such as England and any other land areas) he could distribute in his will as he liked.

    • @EvelynEdwards
      @EvelynEdwards  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@anttibjorklund1869 that is mostly true. In William’s case he was in uncharted territory and really could do whatever he wanted because he conquered England and could set his own precedent. And he really had to be talked in to Robert inheriting anything because he was allied with William’s enemy at the battle he fought at right before he died.

    I'd love to hear more about William Rufus (William II.).
    And the brother Henry (I) was Empress Mathilda's father, wasn't he?
    Only one generation of kings between the conquest and the Anarchy?

    • @EvelynEdwards
      @EvelynEdwards  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, Henry I was Matilda’s father. After Henry I was Stephen of Blois then it was Matilda’s son, Henry II.
      Lots of videos coming up about Matilda.
