I think the original was a good laugh. For one thing I'm pretty sure the guy didn't expect people to actually fund it; it was just a joke. The copycats though... Yeah they saw how much money people gave that guy.

Why not do a segment called "youtube crap"? Where you feature videos that follow the potato salad theory. For example, one person makes a helping the homeless video and goes viral. Next thing you know everyone is making a"helping the Homeless" video. Not because it's the humane thing to do, but for their own selfish reasons of trying to go viral, getting views, or getting recognition.

The thing about the original is that it wasn't intended to succeed but the internet loves being in on an inside joke or be part of a community so it was over-funded. I doubt the creator themselves think it's something worth all that money.
Then there's those people who; just as Ian described, saw how easy Flappy Bird is to make and thought they can make money being lazy. Same with this, I doubt the creator felt comfortable to what people turned it to.
Potato salad is not an American classic though, it's a Central/East European dish eaten for centuries.
