    Thanks for the review. I've just put one of these on the front of my Hornet 600S. One of the advantages I noticed is that the bike is better when cornering over patchy surfaces, which are common near me. A smooth road front feeds back all the little changes in surface, but the Rally STRs don't. This makes the ride smoother and gives confidence.

    Excellent review Sir - many thanks and you've just made my new tyre choice for me,
    I have a 1997 Honda ST1100 on which I'm running Bridgestone BT023's and in December I bought a 2008, 18,000 mile Honda Varadero 1000 after lusting after one for years.
    The Varadero came with a spare pair of Avon 3D XM's which are on now but it arrived fitted with Scorpion Rally STR's which were worn enough to pick up an MOT advisory so I swopped to the Avons. I had Avon 3D XM's fitted to the Pan a while ago and hated the damn things - it just never felt "right". I've only done a few miles on the Varadero with the Avons so I'll have to reserve judgement for now.
    Back to the Scorpions on the Varadero. It arrived by delivery courier on the 16th December and on the 18th December, me and the two hooligans I ride with did a days ride on damp, greasy, snotty roads and I'll admit to having been a little concerned - big, heavy bike, first time out on it, worn "trailie" tyres and less than ideal riding weather.
    The Scorpions shocked me - no slipping, sliding, squirming - nothing, even on the really filthy slimy roads. On the return journey there's a decent stretch of what was motorway but is now downgraded to A road - hardly used, nice and quiet and even at 70MPH (+VAT.......) dead stable.
    Unless the Avons piss me off like they did on the Pan, I'll wear 'em out and then go back to Scorpions.
    Thanks again for the review - I've seen a couple and they all mirror what you're saying.
    Ride safe.
    Neil.

      @SamVBikes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!
      I've heard very mixed reviews about the Avons too so I think your thoughts are pretty accurate there!
      The only other tyre similar that I'm quite impressed by is the Anakee Adventures. Review more recently on the channel. I have to say... I think I prefer the Scorpions though!
      Thanks for watching! And ride safe

  • @graham9416

    I'm on my third set and think they're great - one thing, when half of the tread depth is gone after barely 2000 miles and you are thinking that you're not going to make it home from your extended tour without finding a new rear tyre, don't worry because the rate of wear steadily reduces with tread depth (tbh this may well be true for all tyres but in my experience is particularly noticeable with the STRs)

    • @SamVBikes
      @SamVBikes  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes!! I noticed that too! The first few thousand miles seemed to go really quick, but the rest was fine. Maybe because you're not as eager to pin the throttle when you think you have bald tyres 😂

    Fully agree with every point you made about these tires, I run them on a 99 wr400 on ktm 390 wheels so sumo trim effectively. They work brilliantly on the road no matter how much I push my lean angles they never seem to squirm or feel like they'll wash out. I've done some pretty intense green laning and again fully agree with your comments they're awesome on the dry hard pack and gravel ( the lads on road legal knobblys couldn't believe I didn't get stuck anywhere especially on 17's) but they definitely show their weakness in the sloppy stuff. What I really love about these tires is if you want to make them let go and spin the rear and float the front end and act like a tool they'll let you do it no drama, but if you back the throttle off abit they find the grip again smoothly and predictably. I wanted more off road oriented tires initially, but as you said on 17's your limited by choice. Glad I was frankly because these tires suit my riding style and type of surfaces perfectly. I spin up the rear alot just for fun frankly and they just don't seem to wear (light bike bere in mind) would definitely recommend overall and will keep running them on the wr400 for the foreseeable future!
    Again great review mate

    I can't decide between Road 6's, Rally STR's or Anakee Adventure, I do a fair bit of gravel and poorly maintained single track roads,
    never had a problem with current Road 5's but they don't like loose gravel and chippings, I'd like to try an 80/20 tyre really. I heard the anakees aren't great in the wet and the STR's are slow to warm up?
    leaning towards the STR's though.

    • @SamVBikes
      @SamVBikes  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You will be fine with either STR or Anakee Adventures. They are both really similar, grip levels, performance etc. I loved my Anakees, had no issues in the wet. STRs do take a little time to warm up though yes and they are a little bit more vibey due to the pattern. I still go in gravel trails with my Road 6s currently too.

    The sidewalls on the STR ain't that hard, did mine with just 3 tire irons as usual. Thought the Mitas E10 Dakar was a little more difficult, so you should probably don't try those if you think the STR's were hard. Will be interesting to see how fast they will get teared up on my KTM 1290 SAR 😂

      @@SamVBikes I just came from a 5000km trip with anake adventures and can confirm I’m never putting them on again :) The front just doesn’t have large enough grooves for my style of riding. It bounces sideways on even the smaller rocks and doesn’t give me any condidence offroad especially when it gets wet.
      But I ride at least 50% offroad usually so I prefer to have a good offroad performance and descent tarmack performance is good enough for me.

    Shall I opt for
    Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR:
    I like Rally’s thread pattern. But more concerned about mileage, road noise, efficiency & on cornering.
    Or
    Pirelli Scorpion Trail2:
    Stock - as usual awesome, only thing is not adequate performance on slush.

      I was running them at 33psi front, 36 rear, as that was the recommended on the Tracer. I normally aired them down a bit to high 20's for any prolonged off-road sections. I've heard people running them at 36F, 42R with no issues. What are you running?

      @@SamVBikes thanks for your reply. I have these tyres on a varadero 1000cc. At first I tried with 40 r and 38 f. I had an issue in cornering. It was very hard to lower the bike and when it comes to a certain angle the bikes drops drastically Wich was very scary. Now I went on 36r and 34 front and made a huge difference, in fact the bike handles extraordinary now as if I am riding a racer cornering wise. I don't know if I can do better or not

      I'd definitely recommend the lower pressures myself too, which is obviously what you've found. They seemed to handle better but did make a bit more noise on the motorway. Glad you've got them to handle better though!

      Appreciate it! I've recently done one on the Anakee Adventures too. Need to see how long they last with my happy throttle hand!

      Yeah agreed, it seems to be a hit with everyone! I want to put them on my Super Adventure now but I dread to think what I'd get out the rear haha
