I have same make and model, I've had it since 2010. It's super reliable. Upgraded the ram to 6gb and changed to SSD, Super fast now too. Yeah the battery life isn't strong since the original batteries died and have been replaced twice (doesn't last beyond 2hrs for movies) the system fan is very noisy especially wen gaming, sounds like a turbine lol, and the mouse pad is gone, but who cares, I prefer external mouse anyway, it's much faster. Press the power button, and it starts right up. With ram and SSD upgrades it performs seamlessly too. I've seen no real reason to replace it cuz it serves my needs which are pretty basic, movies and some games. The reliability of this system cannot be overstated, I've used it every single day for the past 11years and it keeps working. The only time I took it to the shop was to clean the dusty fan which was preventing the system from coming up (safety feature). Even that was not the system's fault. @@semp3161 Kind of a strange place to ask for tech support, but it's fine I guess. The first thing I'd like to ask is how hot is it running? Have you used a program to get the actual temps or are you just saying it's running hot because it warms up on your lap? The reason I ask is because computers only really have a thermal problem when they run at 80-90°C. However, if you do believe it gets abnormally hot you can try and fix the issue by replacing the thermal paste on the CPU. If it's running really hot the fan may be broken or failing, so you can replace that too if changing the paste doesn't work. Just remove the old fan from the heat pipe assembly and attach a new fan. You should also try cleaning the fins around the heat pipes if they're full of dust. About the screen problem, I'm not too sure if it's a screen or graphics problem from your description alone. Try connecting the laptop to an external monitor. If the picture is still messed up on the monitor then you have a graphics problem. If not you just need a new screen. The reason I keep saying graphics is because the dv6 can come with both an integrated graphics chip on the CPU (called an iGPU, or just integrated graphics) or it can come with a completely separate graphics chip (technically referred to as a discrete GPU). If you plan to replace the graphics chip you need to know what type it is. If it's an iGPU you can just replace the CPU, but if it's a discrete GPU then you'll need to replace the whole motherboard, as it's going to be soldered down. If you're not sure how to check with software, you can tell if you have a discrete GPU or iGPU depending on how many branches your heat pipes have. If your heat pipes split into two branches to cover not only the CPU, but also another chip beside it, then you have a discrete GPU and you'll need to replace the board. If not, buy a compatible CPU for the dv6 and replace the old one, just make sure it comes with an iGPU.
