    I’m a commercial HVAC technician.
    My surge is my best friend when up on rooftops lol
    When I’m out and about with my family, I carry the signal because it’s smaller and doesn’t hinder my fashionability as much lol
    But man I love my surge.
    Use it every single day

    Nice comparison. Thanks. One big point (no pun intended) for the Surge is that you can remove the diamond file and use it to sharpen the blade. Not so on the wave.

    After viewing both the surge and the wave in my local camping shop I was totally undecided which one to chose to accompany me on my impending road trip through the Aussie outback. I searched the internet for comparisons and was so confused until I came across your excellent video. By the end of it my mind was made up and I went and bought the surge. Boy, does it feel solid in your hand. The quality is outstanding and it just feels like it could tackle any job that comes it's way. I think this will be a tool that I will have for a long time and one I will use often once I hit the road. Great video. Still can't make up my mind. I'm going to be carrying with a pocket clip in my back pocket, so I know the Wave would be better for this due to it's smaller size and weight. But I just really like the tools on the Surge better and would get more use out of them. Decisions, decisions.
    Also you mentioned you wished they sold the eyeglass screwdriver bit without having to get the other bits. While they don't sell just 1, they do sell a 3pack of them on the leatherman website for 5 dollars. Just wanted to let you know.

    • @TheBigCanucker
      @TheBigCanucker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Steve M Thanks for the heads up on the bits buddy. As for your decision perhaps try the Surge first and if your finding it uncomfortable or too large for your back pocket put up for sale and buy the wave after you’ve sold it. I did that with the OTF. At least here it was pretty easy to sell a used Leatherman and I came pretty close to breaking even on the OTF and I had my curiosity satiated. The other thing is I don’t think you can go wrong with either tool buddy. Take care and stay safe buddy.

    Great review. This following paragraph is not directed at you reviewer, although it does respectfully apply. I figure this as good of a time as any to get this out of my system. P.S.A (that no one asked for) - OIL YOUR LEATHER GUYS. Nearly every review or "show and tell" that I see on youtube and forums you can guarantee almost without fail that their leather products will be dry, cracked and falling apart prematurely. Its a baffling trend to me that ive been seeing for years. You're busy, overwhelmed, have more important things to do, its replaceable, I get it. Just oil it ONCE when you take it out of the box. If nothing else just once. Youd be amazed how much longer it will last being oiled just that one time. You clean and lubricate your firearms and knives I suspect, and I'm sure you oiled your boots when you first bought them. Leather was part of an animal, once it's seperated it no longer being nourished, it needs maintained. Once it cracks its soon to be too late. Take.. Flowers for instance, cut from the plant and given no water, dead. Im not trying to point fingers or piss and moan, I just care about your leather.. And you should too dammit lol. Mink oil, Wal-Mart $4 a can, will last year's.

    • @TheBigCanucker
      @TheBigCanucker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dylan Michael When your right you’re right and you my friend are right. It’s such an easy way to maintain a huge part of my EDC and I’ve never considered it. Well consider my wave and Victorinox multitool sheaths now conditioned. Take care and thanks for pointing that out.

    • @saviom8166
      @saviom8166 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Suggest a conditioning oil for my Victorinox leather sheaths?

    • @dylanmichael3985
      @dylanmichael3985 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Mink Oil. $5-$10 depending on ounces per can. The can will last you years if you use a conservative amount (a little goes a long way) and arent conditioning an obscene amount of leather. Mink oil, the mostly natural stuff (Fiebings is great for the price) is non toxic. (I've used it as lip balm and crack cream for my hands out in the field when ive had nothing else and have never suffered any negative effects.) It also acts as a very good water proofing agent. It is mostly natural minus a safe stabilizer or two, because its derived from animal fat and will go bad without it. It's also cheap, highly effective and can be us for other purposes in a pinch like a balm or vasoline substitute etc (here are more if you're curious, Google it). Also in my opinion a paste is the best form of protectiant to use. Its the most stable compared to a liquid or spray. It requires you to be deliberate in aplication and allows you to be sparing with how much you're using. Recently I've been buying a 6oz tub of fiebings miko oil paste from a seller on eBay for $7.81 which is a great price. Search for it on ebay and keep scrolling and youll find it. Its in a white tub. Band new, Free shipping. For the best results, especially for the first application I would suggest heating the item youre applying the mink oil to immediately before either with a hairdryer, setting it by or on a heater or heat vent in your house during winter or even out in direct sun light. It will allow the oil to penetrate deeper and it will also dry faster. After youve applied it, work it into the leather a bit with your fingers firmly until there aren't any clumps or pools of oil on the leather. Let it dry for a few days, tho you can use it after 24 hours. Re-apply every few months or slightly more often if you start to see or feel it dry out if its getting alot of use or is subjected to the elements often. In a few months you'll be amazed how drastically different it looks and feels and it only gets better with time. It will begin to feel like a very premium item and it will last forever as long as your keeping it saturated. It will change the way you look at leather.
      Oh, I got the surge. It's indispensable for real work. Id argue if you can deal with the larger size and weight its the only edc piece youd ever need, second to a victorinox SAK.

      Your so welcome I’m glad I could help. I’ve just had my third surgery in 3 years on my foot so I’ve had to take it easy on the videos for a bit, but I will be back. I’m glad I have both the wave and surge and I’ve been using the rule of thumb if it’s on my belt it’s the wave unless I’m doing some heavy work that day. As for the surge it’s in my EDC bag I need to carry since I can’t walk with out a scooter. I just like the lighter weight of the 3ave on my belt, but the surge has its place. I was recently at a hotel and I always take out the water regulators in the shower and replace when I leave. My last visit the wave wasn’t big enough to take the shower head off, so I alway now make sure my surge is in my bag. Take care and have a great night.

    An important thing to note about the wave. I bought mine about two or so years ago and recently switched to the surge. I didn't realize it until after I had switched, the amount of times my skin got caught when using the pliers on the wave was infuriating. If you are really wrenching on something and the pliers slip with the wave, it'll nip you pretty good. Nothing major, just annoying. If the surge had the eyeglasses driver and spring loaded pliers it would be perfect.

    I have had my Wave for about 8 years or so. The one you have in the video has different features than mine. That is the Philips drive is a fixed shaft, -it has three standard drives of various sizes in the compartment with the scissors, the lanyard loop hole is smaller and it doesn't have the eye glass screwdriver feature. Also, the case sides seem smoother than yours. I just find it interesting there were at least two different ones.

    I have owned a surge for many years. It is an older model without the replaceable wire cutter. It stays in a drawer and is the first tool I reach for when there is some work to perform. I've been wanting to buy a multitool to compliment my Gerber Center Drive because it doesn't have a couple of things the Leatherman Wave and Surge offer. I'm not the snobbish type to insist one brand is best. There is no one best brand, nor is there one best model. Everyone is different and has different needs. That said, I have been teetering between the Wave and the Surge. I can see and understand your attachment to, and affection for, the Wave. However, after watching this video, I think I'm swayed toward the Surge. I don't mind big, beefy multitools. I think they stand up to rough usage over a longer period of time, and I don't "baby" my tools, although I do take good care of them. I have to say that I'm more fond of my Center Drive's main knife blade much better. It's the sharpest knife I own, and maintaining its edge is not problematic for me. It's the saw blade interchangeability that appeals to me most. And I have to add that the Gerber I have has THE best bit driver on the market, although the double-sided bits the Leatherman uses has appeal, too. But its biggest drawback to me is the proprietary nature of Leatherman's bits. Lastly, thank you so much for a great presentation. You make a good case for both tools you reviewed, and I want to thank you for helping me decide. It was the best of all the videos I watched in trying to make my decision.

    Hello, BC - excellent video - I have both and they are really good! I decided to upgrade from the New Wave to the Surge because of the awl, the replaceable cutters, stranded - wire cutters, crimpers and the blade - exchanger...the Wave+ has the cutters and the crimpers, not enough for me to upgrade...for a little more, I purchased the Surge...I agree with your observations, especially the one that each tool has its uses based on the need, use or project at hand...thanks and good job!

      @TheBigCanucker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sure it can be done, but it might be easier to use the bit adapter that uses the flat bits and get a regular 1/4 inch glasses bit. I took a regular bit holder and ground the end flat so it will fit in the 2D bit holder and I know they make really small 1/4 inch bits. Hope this helps buddy take care.

      @@TheBigCanuckerI do have kind of a video about it, it's currently my only TH-cam video, making it easy to find from my channel. It was meant to be shown for one friend only so i didn't make it high quality international thing. It's silent and texted in finnish. May be boring to you, so you can skip the process and see the final results in 4:07.
      I first saw Raoul Octav doing this, getting me inspired. He has better video but he doesn't do the awl installation there.
      I found my parts from Ebay, luckily from the same seller. Special torx bits required too to open the safety screws. The scissors are from Leatherman Wingman. I like the size, but they just don't cut that well. I will sharpen, actually re-shape them some day trying to improve. The awl is from Leatherman Rebar which pleasantly fits in almost as it is.

    This stuff about the premium knife steels being "better". Im no expert, but AFAIK, the longer they keep the edge, the longer it takes to sharpen them. So unless im missing something, you will end up spending a similar amount of time sharpening both hard and soft steels. Of course, if you only use it for light tasks, then they may never need to be sharpened, and it seems logical that harder steels will have a higher tolerance for what materials it can cut without ever needing to be sharpened... Another benefit will be that if sharpen your hard steel knives as often as softer steels needs to be sharpened, then the harder steel will never get dull... I think maybe i prefer softer steels, for the ease of sharpening it - but im a sucker for "premium" stuff... Yesterday i found an almost $400 pocket knife with a nice fat 4mm M390 drop point blade and titanium handle, on sale for $240. Needless to say; i no longer have those $240, lol! But at least now i have a really nice knife that will probably last my entire life 😁

    • @TheBigCanucker
      @TheBigCanucker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol yes when you get that kind of deal you need to jump 0n it…as for the premium steels most of us will never know or notice the difference between VG and M390 in the real world unless you are cutting a lot on a tough material. As for the super steels being harder to sharpen can be true if you are using the same Alumnium Oxide or Zirc stone it will take longer, but if you use ceramic, CBN or diamond stones to sharpen the premium steel the time will be negligible unless it’s a Maxamet or Rex 121 then your in for a time. The other reason the premium steels can be so beneficial is if you have a job to do and no access to an abrasive to sharpen usually the premium steel will finish the job and then some where as 8CR13MOV may need to be sharpened 2 or 3 times during the job. I hope this helps and take care.

    May I know why you didn't choose Charge TTi over Wave?
    I'm in the middle of making a decision, whether I should buy Charge TTi which only around 30 grams heavier than Wave but have the cutting hook and S30V blade,
    Or, should I buy Wave which half the price of Charge TTi if the cutting hook on the Charge TTi is not too important to have,
    Or, should I buy Surge which the same price as Charge TTi, got more features, but 50% heavier.

The S30 v blade wasn’t a super concern because I always carry a good edc blade in my rotation. I prefer the wave over the surge for edc because the weight is more then I want to carry unless I’m doing hard work. If price is no issue and the charge TTI has the features of the surge with the weight of the wave that’s what I would choose. Take care and stay safe.

    So I do tree work for a living and do a lot of hands on stuff in my free time, I can’t decide which one to get. I have an older leather man which I can’t think of what one but I carry it everyday. Any opinion on which one is the best edc for someone who would use it often

      I think the Surge is a more capable tool over all, but the Wave is way more comfortable to wear every day. I had the wave first and it did most of what I wanted, but when I thought I lost the wave I got a surge and it’s bigger size was more handy a few times. If the bigger weight doesn’t bother you go with the Surge, but if ease of carry is of more importance get the Wave. I hope that helps. Take care.

    I got a surge today and noticed that all the inner tools have play when locked open, is this normal? I thought they were supposed to lock solid

    • @TheBigCanucker
      @TheBigCanucker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just checked my Surge and did notice a small amount of up and down play. I’ve never noticed it when I was using any of the tools and the play hasn’t increased over the last couple of years I’ve owned it. I’ve also never had a tool fail on me, so I’m not sure where that leaves us. I think it’s a pretty well built tool that’s pretty solid. Take care and stay safe.

      The bit holder comes from the company I worked for before I got hurt called Wurth. There is a Wurth USA that I believe sells it. It’s still up in the air if I can recover enough to go back to work so if you can’t find one and I go back I can sell you one. I’ve got 6 or so on the list buddy. It’s just a regular bit holder that I ground down to fit the 2D bit Leatherman holder. Take care.

      As far as I know Leatherman doesn't sell S30V blades. You are better off either buying a Surge new with the upgraded steel or look for an aftermarket seller online, ebay, or Etsey. Sorry I couldnt be more help. Take care.
