  • Not my best day out on the river. My casting was just off and was feeling lazy after a super long hike so didn’t adjust as much as I needed to. Still no bad days on the river and just enjoyed hiking along the river with my dog. Hope you all still enjoy the video!

What’s your rod, reel, and line? Looks good.

@@wilcosec thanks man just got this set up for the birthday. I’ve been loving it. The rod is a 6wt 9ft Orvis Recon. The reel is a Lamson Remix. And tbh couldn’t tell you what the line is exactly, but I always go with floating line. Unless you’re throwing streamers or something of that nature I don’t like my fly line to sink at all because it makes mending much harder. Some lines will float but then the end will sink and for what I do I don’t really use it much although it would help in some situations. I usually just use a sinking leader if I’m fishing a bigger river with streamers and want my flies to get down quicker. I feel like spending the most on your rod and fly line makes the biggest difference because it just makes casting and mending easier. The reel isn’t as important in my opinion unless you are catching pretty big fish and then having a good drag can help out a lot. Until I got this nicer orvis rod I’d use TFO rods and Echo rods which are perfectly fine, but I definitely feel a difference with being able to make better cast and more importantly better mends with this new Orvis rod. I hope that helps!:)

@@ElevatedFlyFishinghappy birthday! Thanks for the detailed reply. I’m rocking an Echo Carbon XL and Echo’s cheapest reel. 5 wt. I’m finally starting to get out fishing enough to notice some shortcomings of the rod. I get too much recoil and it makes my mends sloppy. Looking for a faster action this time. And I can’t decide what weight to get.
Anyway - thanks for the insights into your setup.

@@wilcosecthat is the exact same rod I had before this one. I like a six weight because can fish a smaller river like this and not feel too over powered but also take it down to the north Platte in Wyoming and catch 10 pound rainbow. In a perfect world I’d like to fish stuff like this with a 5 and bigger rivers with a 6-7 and have like a 3wt for small creeks

But I use my 6 weight for everything. Used to use a 5 weight for everything but had trouble with the big fish with it. I can use this 6 weight on a small brook trout creek and do it’s just not as fun and a little harder to have a soft presentation

@@ElevatedFlyFishing Oh yeah fs a cool spot on the river! I just went camping last week for a night and caught over 20 trout! that floatant you got me to buy actually helped out a lot! the biggest i caught last week was 18 - 19 inches?

@@cxbra2323 damn very nice. Using just a dry fly or dry dropper set up? Yeah I know it helps because I’ve been lazy and not shook it up/dried it off and couldn’t catch anything and then right when I dried it and shook it up they started taking again. I think if the fly doesn’t float and is like submerged just a little they can tell and usually don’t like it as much.

@@ElevatedFlyFishing Yeah definitely! Yup just a dry dropper set up! there still biting drys which is awesome because there awesome to catch when they strike on the surface!

@@viktorb8432 I’m up in Grand county in the town of Fraser and honestly don’t really go down to the front range to fish so don’t really know much. But I’ve heard the big Thomson is good and also cheesman canyon. But if you ever make the trek up here I can recommend more.

@@viktorb8432 well then if I were you I’d take them to the Colorado River. There are quite a bit of public sections from Granby all the way down to Kremmling. The best way to do it is go to the Winter park fly fisher shop in Fraser and they have a map of all the public sections you can access. I really like the access point right after Parshall as you’re traveling north on highway 40, but it’s all good. Also the tail water below shadow mountain reservoir is awesome. But I’d say this Colorado River sections in between more so hot sulfur springs and Kremmling is where you should check out and do a little research on!:) hope that helps
