You know how sometimes things come into your life that strike a chord. Well this video is one of those things. I’m 72 and retired and just going through the motions not high or low just pretty much a flat line. I say I love fly fishing ,tying flys and camping but it has been to much effort to do them. I haven’t appreciated what I have and where I live. I have a place in the woods and live in north Idaho beautiful country and great trout streams within 30 minutes if I want blue ribbon streams or rivers it’s an hour. This video has caused me to stop and think what am I doing. I have made a shift in how I’m going to do things from now on. Thank you so much for putting this on TH-cam.
Sir, I'm an up and coming documentary filmmaker, trying to work my way into making videos like this. I was a wildland firefighter for over a decade. My background is that I love everything wilderness. My youtube channel supports everything I just said. I've made a handful of videos through the years supporting that sort of stuff. I think I've figured out what I want to do with the rest of my life, finally. I want to make mini-documentaries on things like fly fishing. Things that are a hidden art. Would you be interested in collaborating with me on this? Is this maybe something I could work with you on and maybe work towards filming a 15-20 minute mini documentary? I'd love to know your story.
I live in Spokane and have been fishing those rivers a lot this summer. Let me know if you want to get out on the water. Everything I know I’ve learned from gentlemen like you and Mr. Mazzarella. Let’s get on the water sometime.
@@joshhardwick I lost my grandfather, my own father and father-in-law, all the patriarchs in my life my grandfather taught me how to fly fish on the Smith river in Montana that really connected with his little piece. We really do have to take time to appreciate the little things. Thank you so much for your work on this video. 😢😢
"I'm 73 and I think motion, activity, is the lubricant of life." I'm not sure I've ever heard more profound words in a single sentence. This is just a fantastic short documentary. I could watch this man for hours on end.
I'm 56. In my life I've had cancer, several strokes, a few heart attacks, and almost eight years ago, a heart transplant. Like yourself, I never stop. Like Burgess Meredith said in Grumpy Old Men, "Life's about the experiences." Or, like Tim McGraw wrote in that song dedicated to his dad, "Live like you're dying." Also, like yourself, I think of all the things worth knowing, discovering, and I for one, want leave this place with my cup overflowing. I'm an attorney, but if a person asked me what would be my epitaph, I should hope it should at least include something about salmon, trout, campfires and pointers.
I had to comeback and watch this video again. Struck such a cord with me . I think I've been wasting to much of my retirement life just sitting . I've got to do better. Life is short for sure . Love one another and enjoy what life you were given. Awesome inspirational video
As an educator and part time fly fishing guide in the summer, I couldn't agree more with Mr. Mazzarella's outlook on life. Great videography and catching what matters on film!
I couldn't wait to retire...no more boss, no more have to be at meetings, no more reports. 2 years into retirement I was bored, I was chairman of the bored so I got a job, A low pressure job as a photographer for construction lenders. I got a border collie puppy that's a blast to spend time with. Staying busy is the key to happy retirement.
Very inspiring! I am 44, fly fishing has helped encourage me to live a clean lifestyle so I can enjoy it for many years to come. Thank you for the wonderful video!
Dayle really summed it up when he said that when he is not on the water he feels he should be on the water and when he is on the water he wants to stay on the water…. This is a beautiful film!!
What a wonderful man, great wee film, and probably the the most important lesson you have ever given, I hope everyone listened to your class today. Take care 👍🏴
Great video/words,with 40 + years of fly fishing/tying under my belt, now retired & have taken to passing on some of my knowledge to the younger 1's,with the loss of my spouse, dad, mom, son & brother you need to find balance & something that keeps your soul alive,my greatest moment is teaching others & receiving a compliment about my tying style, patterns or knowledge passed on,tight lines 🤙🙏
Josh this is one of the best fly fishing films I’ve seen in a long time man. What a story, what a main character, incredible cinematography, great audio…absolute banger of a film man. Never wanted to fish with a guide so bad in my life!

Man Josh, great talent you have and an amazing story you captured and shared. Keep at it, you will go far with this caliber of work. Dayle, you are an inspiration yourself. Thanks to you both.
Lots of wisdom in Dayle's "Last Day" comment. He reminds me that everything we do is finite, there will be and must be a last time for everything. Appreciate it while you have it. We seldom know when the last time will be. Thanks for this video!
Thanks for the wisdom, i am 32 years old and these words are a beacon of light to guide the way to enjoying life till the last day. Live without regret my friend.
Fantastic film, we all get caught up with day to day drudgery when what we should be doing is enjoying life, this guy seems to have nailed it, wonderful
This is an amazing short film! I randomly stumbled upon this video and it was like I was seeing a ghost when I seen Dayle. Ive fished this same area and met Dayle once when I was walking back to my truck and had no idea he had such a fascinating life. He picked me and my friend up and dropped us off at my car. I remember thinking wow that was nice of him because we had a couple mile walk back. Unfortunately all we had time for was your every day banter about fishing. Thanks for giving more insight on his life. Maybe one of these days ill book a day of fishing with him.
Wow this video was powerful!! Thank you for sharing that wisdom. No better way to describe life and that’s why I Love Fly Fishing, because the self improvements, the learning curve, the challenges. Fly Fishing is Life!! Stunning video.
