Is Johnny Depp Melungeon? Among his ancestors is Elizabeth Key Grinstead, a figure of historical significance known to be Depp's 8th great-grandmother. Elizabeth Key Grinstead was not only enslaved but also a pioneer in challenging her status in the 17th century, marking a pivotal case in the colonial American legal system. As we delve into Depp's lineage, we'll explore how this remarkable story of resilience and fight for freedom ties into the broader narrative of American identity and hidden history

Come join me on a new docu-series that explores identity, racial tensions in the South during the 20th century, and the unique experiences of those who historically called Louisiana home.
My name is Danielle Romero, and all my life, I have romanticized Louisiana.
Growing up in New York, it represented a place where I could step back the sepia-toned life of my great grandmother, Lola Perot, who died before I was born.
Now, it was time to go back to Louisiana--although I had no idea what the truth would be or what questions to ask---who was Lola really? Who were we?

That Ethnicelebs site says that he's predominantly European. Therefore his somewhat darkish complexion could just be French or English, which is what he is mostly.
He looks similar in coloring and features to Orlando Bloom, David Gandy, Aiden Turner and Henry Cavill who are all British/Irish. So that's probably where he gets it from. Just looks unusual, is all.

Also, the R&B girl group, '702' are her descendants. Elizabeth has both black and white descendants and her story played a pivotal role in the early history of slavery in America - they had to change the slave laws pertaining to mixed African slave children claiming their white fathers estate - her story is worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster! Your ancestor was a formidable woman. Respect! It's sad that to this day, there is a deep seeded stigma in having African ancestry no matter how minuscule - I am African and I love it - black peoples we are a vibe, hahaha! @@leclube2282 for sure, no one would think I have black ancestry just by looking at me. My mom told me about Elizabeth Key maybe 5 years ago but she just knew the name and some minor details about her life. Our family only remembered that she had been a slave and sued for freedom, and we had a detail wrong, we thought she married the plantation owner. One day a few years ago I decided to Google her and that's when I learned she had a larger historical profile.

@@idratherbeaphilthanajustin9533”English” doesn’t necessarily mean England native. My European ancestors (on both sides) lived in Ireland, Wales (before they came to the Americas (on that boat to Virginia) but their real identity is French, German, and than they colonized Norway-Norway and Iceland shows for me in my DNA. They colonized Britain w/William the Conqueror during the Conquest in the 1000s. His black Amerindian ancestry doesn’t just erase, no matter how far down the line. My French ancestors, according to a document I found, were not all the way white because they were mixing even then with black people in France. Dark features-his black hair, brown eyes, tanned skin are not native to Europeans. The early European progenitor was blond hair, blue eyes. That is his black ancestry recent and most likely before that. Dieppe’s ancestry if mostly French, most likely German, and Scandinavian, just like I’ve found my European ancestors to be-and than those people who came to France came from ROME & GREECE from my research on my family in Northeastern France.

From Wikipedia; "Melungeons (/məˈlʌndʒənz/ mə-LUN-jənz) (sometimes also spelled Malungeans, Melangeans, Melungeans, Melungins[3]) are a group of people from Appalachia who predominantly descend from northern or central Europeans and sub-Saharan Africans. Their ancestors were likely brought to Virginia as indentured servants in the mid-17th century.[1]
According to the 1890 Department of Interior Report of Indians Taxed and not Taxed within the "Tennessee" report, "The civilized (self supporting) Indians of Tennessee, counted in the general census numbered 146 (71 males and 75 females) and are distributed as follows: Hawkins county, 31; Monroe county, 12; Polk county, 10; other counties (8 or less in each), 93. The Melangeans or Melungeons in Hawkins County claim to be Cherokees of mixed blood (white, Indian, and negro), their blood being derived, as they assert, from English and Portuguese stock. "

Look at what USA did to both ends of the island, Papa Docs in more recent history, the wall built by Dominican Republic, the term "soap", the fact of family in common, and which are emphatic to denial any trace of African blood. This based on conversations from people who lived on the islands. When some fled Haiti, they went to Louisiana purchase area. When black code came on strong, some held onto being creole, white but definitely not African. They might been progeny educated in Europe. They might have claimed ownership of other people.

Johnny Depp does have Native American roots. His relative did their family tree:
“I descend from the same lines as him. Though he may not be informed properly of our heritage, he is certainly correct. I can prove that his second great grandmother was 1/4 Cherokee, his third great grandmother, who is my fifth great grandmother, was 1/2 Cherokee. I've been researching this family for 11 years now, as it is my own. I can prove all of this. The attached image is a picture of his second great grandmother his direct maternal line, the one he speaks of in interviews). Her name is Amanda Bradley, she married Wiley Slone. The other attached picture is of my own ancestor, Amanda's brother, Isaac "Ike" Bradley. He married Nancy Jane Slone, sister of Wiley Slone. Amanda and Isaac's mother, Elizabeth Pridemore Bradley, spoke Cherokee. I have a picture of her also, she has Cherokee symbols drawn on her dress in the photo. The census records says she couldn't read or write, and we know that she spoke broken English. Her brother John served on both sides during the Civil War and was listed as 'Colored' while serving for the Union. I have much more information on this family if anyone else cares enough to read it. My grandfather was researching before me, from the 1960s all the way to

Danielle, I am on 3 genealogy sites and had my DNA done in 2006 through National Geographic before it was the rage. One of the sites traces my DNA to Jane "The Elder" Gibson from the Pamunkey Reservation who would be my 10th GG. She was Native American from the Powhatan, Saponi, Nansemond or Mingo tribe. Supposedly the husband took on the tribe of his wife's family. She was enslaved on the Shirley Plantation in Virginia by the British and her children were bound out to work on the ships to transport tobacco. There is an interesting case in the Virginia court archives regarding her case to have her children freed. It is rather extensive but you might find it interesting. Not many people know that the Native Americans were enslaved. I receive notices r/t blood relatives from one of my sites claiming that Elvis and Johnny are distant cousins.

Later he spent time with an uncle in New Orleans where he began working as a street musician, mentored by a black man. Then he moved around a lot honing his skills--at least in New York, Paris and, I believe, Morocco--maybe more places. In NY he worked with a group of black guys playing on subways in a group called The Train Robbers; notice the irony of playing for change on a subway train while proclaiming yourselves "train robbers". He's now in Austin,TX to my understanding, and hangs out with the likes of Willy Nelson. You might remember him as the co-author and performer of the title song of the movie "Killers of the Flower Moon". He might be a descendent of Davy Crockett. I suspect he might be Melungeon.

Possibly the Italians who settled in the Kentucky area could be involved, but they might have come later (Kathy Matea is an example of Italian Kentucky area lineage?)
Black ancestry is also involved of course, and then there's always the question if we can figure out whether that was mostly African or Islanders.
Greetings from the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina 😊😢

Genestar the ancestry site claims Depp is mostly English with French Huguenot . Hence his French surname. It also does mention him being related to Elizabeth Key Grinstead.

When I was a young teenage girl, my family and I were watching Johnny Depp's movie, Benny & Joon, and my mother turned to me and said, "Jonny Depp looks like you!" I replied, "Thanks, Mom, just what every teenage girl wants to hear!" I never forgot that, and I did notice that she was right. It was especially apparent in that movie because he had shoulder length, wavy black hair. My hair is longer, but the same texture and color. We have the same eye color, maybe the same nose. There's definitely something about him that looks a lot like me, even if my face is a bit more feminine in places.

I realized that Johnny Depp had Melungeon heritage during the Amber Heard trial, and I realized...oh, that's probably why! Then I looked it up and discovered that he is my 8th cousin.
One other thing I wanted to mention...there's no proof that Melungeons were Sephardic Jews and Muslims. That's just one hypothesis. I think that the initial population probably consisted of survivors from Santa Elena and its outlying forts, that were left behind (we know that everyone in the 4 or 5 forts and many people from the town, which was located where modern Hilton Head is located, was left behind) when everyone they could put aboard took a ship to St. Augustine and burned Santa Elena (rather than let the English settlers have whatever they left behind). No ship ever came for the survivors who were left behind. Some of them were likely Sephardic Jews and Muslims, conversios who wanted to get as far from the Spanish Inquisition as they could. I believe that people from this population did often marry Native Americans and subsequently, whoever lived near them, for generations, resulting in a so-called tri-racial isolate population (I say 'so-called' because race is a social construct and the concept of multiple extant human races has no basis in biology).
Many Melungeons claimed that they were Portuguese, and I have that in my family tree as well. There was a court case in which my 6th great-grandmother's sister was claimed to be Portuguese, although we now have Y-DNA evidence that their father's ancestry was African on the male line...possibly as recently as his father, or possibly going back to the Muslim Consequent of Spain (we believe that his father was an African American man, based on the best candidate for who his father is, and based on the court cases of his probable sister and niece, whose marriages to white men were invalidated based on their African ancestry). Of course, this doesn't mean that he wasn't also Portuguese. The mtDNA shows that their mother was of Basque origin. Taken together, this definitely backs up the idea that Melungeons do have some Iberian ancestry, as this is the only branch of my family who I can definitely say was Melungeon, and not just someone who lived near Melungeons. (My 6th great-grandmother's sister was married to Ambrose Collins, who was the brother of Vardy Collins, the first person ever recorded in print as being Melungeon, and after whom Vardy Valley and the Vardy School were named. You can't get much more Melungeon that that!)
