Thanks for all the great feedback guys, I know there were several moments where I did things completely wrong when belaying!! I would for example slide my break hand along the rope, which I would never ever do with an ATC. At one point I even released the break hand, which I wasn’t even aware of before watching the clip. I should -never- had done that, and it won’t happen again. Thank you so much for pointing it out!! I will practice a lot, and use a different technique when using grigri. I’ll maybe also use Ohm or weights so I won’t fly up in the air, and so I won’t drop Magnus❤️❤️
Heya. I would also recomend moving more, if you for example move more away from the first anker you give less rope. And you could also give more rope to just move closer to the first anker point so that you dont have to panik and pull lots of rope all of an sudden. I hope i explaind that correctly XD. Im used to use terms that aren't in english Lol.
Hey Marte, probably someone else said it already, but try using this th-cam.com/video/BAxY-BBSlGc/w-d-xo.html method next time when belaying lead with the GriGri. You will less likely lock it when feeding rope and its still safe in case of a fall while feeding rope. Also you could implement walking a few (1-3max)steps forward/backward to compensate for superfast rope request from the climber. but be aware of lift if the weight difference is big between you and partner, since standing to far away from the wall, the angle to the first draw would be not ideal. keep practicing, you have already come a long way! cheers Andy
I’ve read some comment’s of people pointing out, that you should use the other technique (holding the GriGri and break rope with your right hand while pulling the rope out with your left hand) when belaying with a GriGri. As an instructor myself my favourite way of doing it (and my students like it as well) is using this technique on the first five quickdraws to avoid unnecessary slack and after the sixth quickdraw using the technique used with tube-styled belay devices (the way you tried it in this video). Like this you can do soft catches when belaying lighter or equal weight climbers when done right... Might be worth a try.

Yes, please more lead videos! Not a lot of other channels do lead climbing and I find it super exciting to see you guys get to the crux. There's something super intense about it! I also think it's really cool to see people fight through the pump. It also seems like it would be a great learning experience for Marte to belay more :D. I belay with the grigri as well and find it easier to combine feeding rope with moving closer to the wall to avoid short ropeing. A step in and feed while clipping and a step back and take a little when there is slack after a clip 😊. Also you did great!
You could always do subtle voice overs talking about the lead climb as youre climbing. Then you don’t have to worry about it being silent and you wouldnt have to talk the whole time. Idk, would help us know better whats going on up there maybe. 🤷♂️
Yeah, that is so sweet and actually well thought out- when he reassured her there is a lower chance she is gonna be stressed and mess up. Although you can clearly see that he's lying in the part when he says that and that he fully trusts her with the belaying- he always looks people straight in the eye and when he made those statements, his eyes went down-right, when he was saying something else straight eye-to-eye contact and then back down again ;) Some more tries and she is gonna be a pro for sure!
15:07 was a wincing moment. Always important to keep the rope in front of your limbs. I think it's also important to communicate with new belayers. Very entertaining- looking forward to seeing the normal girl raise through the climbing ranks!

Hey! Definitely more lead climbing video's for me! I love these much more as the bouldering video's haha. Keep up the climbing and stay safe! Oh and a little tip for Marte: They teached me to take a step forward towards the wall when needed to give out slack fast. This way you can put a meter or so more on the rope. Ofcourse it only works when you have enough room to walk arround in the gym and not on a multi-pitch 😁 Deeply respect that you climbed a 6C on lead. You've got to put on that mindset for that!
From personal experience: spend 30 minutes teaching her how to properly feed slack with a GriGri, get short roped 99% less. With a little coaching, she'll be a great belayer and will be way less stressed.
Yeah it seemed that she didn't know how to feed properly and therefore when she tried to feed fast it auto-locked as it is supposed to. Magnus needs to teach her a bit more about the device and how to hold it properly so she can feed the rope more efficiently.
He has said n the past he's not a good teacher more a dooer esp on video. Maybe someone else can teach her as Magnus concentrated on climbing using the split screen.
I agree. I think just small things like if he communicated more with her when he's clipping would be really useful (I find for beginners, they find it really helpful if they hear the climber yelling "clipping" or whatever else). It also seemed like she fed through the Grigri more like a tube device but in my experience, I find handling it with your fingers under the lip + thumb over the cam to be a lot easier. Also just stepping into the wall to give slack. Either way, it sounds like she hasn't done much of it but I think with more practice she'll get there!
Should have gotten an atc style assisted breaking device like a black diamond pilot. Much easier for a beginner and far less stressful for starting out.
Regarding belaying, maybe Marte can slide her brake hand down earlier and get a full arm length of slack below the grigri in anticipation of needing to give slack, to avoid the amusing but frantic small movements when she rushes to give slack. Also as someone else mentions she can further give and adjust slack quickly if needed by moving back and forward, even sitting down.

From personal experience: spend 30 minutes teaching her how to properly feed slack with a GriGri, get short roped 99% less. With a little coaching, she'll be a great belayer and will be way less stressed.
Yeah it seemed that she didn't know how to feed properly and therefore when she tried to feed fast it auto-locked as it is supposed to. Magnus needs to teach her a bit more about the device and how to hold it properly so she can feed the rope more efficiently.
He has said n the past he's not a good teacher more a dooer esp on video.
Maybe someone else can teach her as Magnus concentrated on climbing using the split screen.
they can literally just google "how to belay with a grigri", their website explains it quite succinctly with a minute and a half long video lol
I agree. I think just small things like if he communicated more with her when he's clipping would be really useful (I find for beginners, they find it really helpful if they hear the climber yelling "clipping" or whatever else). It also seemed like she fed through the Grigri more like a tube device but in my experience, I find handling it with your fingers under the lip + thumb over the cam to be a lot easier. Also just stepping into the wall to give slack. Either way, it sounds like she hasn't done much of it but I think with more practice she'll get there!
Should have gotten an atc style assisted breaking device like a black diamond pilot. Much easier for a beginner and far less stressful for starting out.

Loved this kind of climbing, it's more impressive for me because of the heights and the endurance.
very cool video please make more, i can imagine how hard it is to belay someone like Magnus for a beginner belayer and even more so on camera
Regarding belaying, maybe Marte can slide her brake hand down earlier and get a full arm length of slack below the grigri in anticipation of needing to give slack, to avoid the amusing but frantic small movements when she rushes to give slack. Also as someone else mentions she can further give and adjust slack quickly if needed by moving back and forward, even sitting down.
