Man this is exactly what I needed to see. Mad inspiring to see an artist doing incredible; not only independently, but also married with kids, not in his 20’s. Anything is possible with determination
As a girl who was tired of the Bs, in the “biz”. Tired of bad deals, tired of crap I don’t have time for. I also wasn’t considered “authentic “ because I was always interested in the new ways of surfing through music. I love it that much. I fled from NYC, LA & Nashville to an island. Set my studio up at first inside my car, 12 years later I own a house down here and play live, test my songs in person on real people, watch their faces, see what works. Caught a lot of “$#%!?” For it, but I’m happy and continuing to write from the middle of the ocean. Living a happy life with my boyfriend and our dogs. Hope to be a mom someday, recording vocals from the house and doing what I love without sacrificing my dignity and soul. While I do have a decent voice, I suck at caring too much about the things that don’t matter. Moving here has helped that, but hearing this interview changes the game…… This interview I’ve needed to hear for years. Thank you! ❤
This is inspiring. I’ve been making music for over 10 years and to see someone be able to make a living off music without all of the glitz and glame is amazing. Like Nic I prefer to live a peaceful quiet life with my family but also extremely passionate about making music. To see someone actually accomplish doing both in their 30’s definitely gave me some motivation I needed.
The part where Nic D says "where you put your energy is what's going to grow" really resonated with me. I've been posting music on Spotify for about a month but I'm also in college and I felt at peace when I was making music and posting it rather than doing college work.
As someone who doesnt make music or own a business or anything. Nic is so down to earth and I love how he uses quotes or stories of successful people and its not in a way of a speech, it'd real. Kyle also asking great questions, not overloading or invading anything, so much humble energy coming from this
Damn, I just realized all meaning, theme, sentiment, tone, symbolism, and everything in music just doesn't matter anymore. No more writing songs with the intent to go down in history, to resonate with the broken teen, to uplift and give confidence to the hopeless, etc. Now, I need to add a transcript with the beat as a bonus, even a bundle. Or, a subscription (thanks Nic)! D, just dropped a bomb on us all.
I wouldn’t say it doesn’t matter but I think it only matters to the same relative amount of fans that it’s always mattered to ie a small percentage of total listeners, so I think it’s still very much worth caring about as an artist but if we solely rely on that, our chances of establishing a sustainable career in a reasonable amount of time are much lower. To pop off as fast as possible and acquire that core fanbase that will care about the deeper meaning, symbolism, etc we need to adjust our approach to a strategy that goes with the flow of people’s consumption habits to give ourselves the platform that is effective enough for the super fans to find us. The two approaches are not mutually exclusive. Nobody is gonna be deterred from listening to the shorter, more easily made, less deep music/content because we also make longer, more meaningful pieces. Do both. This is coming from someone that places a lot of value on deeper meaning and connection. I have to make that switch myself to a strategy of quantity over quality and find a balance that works for me as I don’t think just making vapid art is the key, but the momentum is more valuable than grinding over details. It’s clear that it’s currently the most effective way to go about it. The best song ever written will rot in obscurity if nobody ever has a chance to hear it.
The guy lying in the sun at the back is actually a mood 😂🔥 Loved this video guys! Very inspiring for independent artists. I like Nick's 'buy-in' model against recoupables too! Keep up the good work Kyle! 😁👑
i like what was said about being a true artist and needing to value business. One could argue, once you release your music to the world, its no longer yours, its the worlds. So, its a blessing when you think about it, to make a living off of sharing how you see the world. You don't own anything but your expression. and expression is a passing moment, not something you own all the time. and thats the value that is provided to people. not some audio file. good talk for sure.
I think the fantasy that the music industry expect lavish lifestyle and cool personality that push to us growing up. And now shocked to see the best artist to be just simple person with practical advice on how he get there and now give us a book or a manual. I admire this guy, and so down to earth. 😊
This is all gold. I've been doing a music a long time and hope that people getting into it with the old, getting robbed way of thinking (i.e. get signed, get management, etc.) watch this and really hear what Nic is saying. Deeply. And an incredibly important thing to note is: What Nic D has, in addition to fearsome business acumen, is top level ability as a pop songwriter, producer, and artist. Don't forget -- you need that, too. And it's very rare.
Hands down my most favorite artist. I have so many other artists that I listen to but there has never been one that I just let play. Top listener here!
Kyle, Nic, You guys are inspiring me to keep my head down and never give up my dream of making music. I literally wanted to change the world to my music and I’m only 12 months and 12 songs into that process. I want to do it for something bigger than me, and bigger than us. I wanna give something back, but I also want to be able to support my family with my music, thank you for this video.
I love this interview! I played it in my sleep and have it on again during my morning walk (currently in Atlanta, flew in from London last week). This is one of the best podcasts online. I'll get it shared now 💪
Hi podcastters, To me, real talks about music like this are inspiring me to start up music again. So I am feeling a sense of excitement that music sounds more than a passion. The genre is in fact a business. Thanks for these words. Best, Gid.
Thanks Kyle great interviewing. Nic mentioned content he did for Icee Pop. Said he released the content months later. Can you pls send me the link of that content? Thanks Bob
Damd..you just crushed me.im so attached to these songs I forgot I can write more...and now I'm better at it.im not a business man and I know nothing about youtube..but I know how to be me on Camara and I'm making my very 1st video now and the research led me to you.THANKYOU
thanks for putting this out. such a great conversation. I can't wait til I can have conversations like this from the other side to those where I am now.
Absolutely loved this interview. Nic has great perspective and principles. I have no idea who he was before this interview but I def appreciate the gems and the rawness!! Kudos to both of you.
Kyle this is great content! I use SEO tools and noticed your score is only at a 10% so your not reaching your full potential. I would hate for so many people to miss the oportunites to hear the great advise and knowledge given here. Hmu if you need any help. Much love from KY
I care bro. I watch every damn second, you’re a inspiration to me. I’m a underground artist tryna make my way… I’ll kill any beat you have if I get the chance
I have a lot of respect for Nic. The sad part though is how into fast songs he is. The amount of hours that went into Bohemian Rhapsody was probably more than everything Nic has ever recorded combined. Same with a lot of the greatest songs ever written. So.. this fast food music might not be so good for our souls.
as a business owner everything nic d is talking about is stuff you learn building a biz from the ground up. wild to see it applies everywhere.
I use to be a business owner.
Back in middle school I walked dogs every week and made over 40 bucks a week.
100%. Enterprise lessons. Entrepreneurship
business is business@@kcchiefsproductions8687

Great podcast. This was really insightful. I dig all the advice.

I really enjoyed this conversation. He really spoke about the problems that signing to a label can bring.
I live in Carolina.. I bet ive walked by Nic and not noticed in the past... small world.
Shoutout VA!!!
Thank you very much!!!! Amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing :)
Maybe I live under a rock, but for the biggest independent artist on earth, I have never heard of this guy until this video.
Gold advice, right here ❤
Great interview!
Yes, okay Nic D! That’s right, talk your sh*t! @28:32
Thank you for sharing, was a really great talk!
I have a lot of respect for Nic. The sad part though is how into fast songs he is. The amount of hours that went into Bohemian Rhapsody was probably more than everything Nic has ever recorded combined. Same with a lot of the greatest songs ever written. So.. this fast food music might not be so good for our souls.
kinda wrong comparison though, it's not the speed that makes fast food unhealthy, it's the ingredients.
great video with some really good tips.
This is incredible
I love this, one day we meet bro, much love from independent artiste from this part of the world,
A new song every week?wow.
never heard of dude but respect!
