My 10 favorite films from 1978: 1-Days of Heaven (1978) 2-Superman (1978) 3-Dawn of the Dead (1978) 4-Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) 5-The Deer Hunter (1978) 6-Watership Down (1978) 7-Autumn Sonata (1978) 8-Straight Time (1978) 9-Get Out Your Handkerchiefs (1978) 10-Halloween (1978)
My Top 10 1. The Deer Hunter 2. Straight Time 3. Blue Collar 4. Superman 5. The Last Waltz 6. Halloween 7. National Lampoon's Animal House 8. Grease 9. Coming Home 10. The Fury
This is a really interesting show where they talk about the biggest hits of 1978, their personal favourites of 1978 and their least favourites of 1978. Patrick Shields' says this is his favourite of the Siskel & Ebert special shows because Gene makes an interesting point at around the 10:51 mark about blockbuster hits like Star Wars, Saturday Night Fever and Grease that are more likely to out crowd smaller films like Straight Time, An Unmarried Woman and Autumn Sonata. It's a trend that's been going on for nearly half a century.
fun simpler movies will always have a wider appeal. Not everyone is in the mindset to watch serious films. Ebert says it best as 2:10 will say where things are, films arent really appreciated they used to. Films used to feel like the peak of entertainment in American society not as much anymore. it really depends all where streaming is going. its looking like we'll just round about back to just having a cable like system but its just on Demand
I'm honestly amazed at Siskel and Ebert's worst films picks. Medusa Touch is very grim in tone, but pretty effective - horror movies were a huge blind spot for both critics, while The Wild Geese is a perfectly decent action movie, even if the cast are somewhat elderly for their roles.
In no particular order: Capricorn One Animal House Lord of the Rings (Bakshi) Dawn of the Dead Heaven Can Wait Invasion of the Bodysnatchers Superman Midnight Express The Last Waltz Corvette Summer The Deer Hunter Starcrash (for its sheer cheesiness)
This foreshadows their frustrations with the 80s well. Although they loved Jaws, Star Wars, and Superman, these films marked a steady decline from the heady highs of the late 60s/early 70s that made their jobs such a delight.

Straight Time is amazing
10:51 - Holy God, he predicted the future and central problem of film today. They must be rolling in their graves.

What happened to the end of the show?
These Chicago critics love Chicago movies.
im watchin straight time, but did siskel review hooper 1978 cause thats a good movie, Hooper and straight time were great films
I I have never seen Grease. And I doubt I ever will. But I have made up for it by watching Animal House twenty times.
Love animal house & grease, they're both funny & classic
You really should cos it’s way more subversive than you would think
are these blockbusters gonna crowd us out?
Cue _Transformers_ franchise.

Yep enjoyed Jaws 2 immensely it doesn't surpass the original but it did have more attacks than the original kinda like Friday the 13th in the ocean
Perfect picture; very weak audio
When I saw on box office mojo Jaws 2 gross $77 million.
The real greatest movie of 1978 is Blue Collar starring yaphet kotto Richard Pryor and Harvey Keitel
Superman The Movie didn’t make the cut? Seriously?
It made Roger's best 10 list.
I enjoy Superman but mostly for the origin story.
not in any specific order
heaven can wait
grease
superman
the buddy holly story
capricorn one
