I remember being so fascinated with skydiving and trying to learn so much about it when Bill came out with the first Skyhook. That man has given so much to the sport!
Thank you for helping to save my son's life today. From "oh H" to reserve was seamless - he sent me the video. I am so glad he had your system in his rig! Abrazos!
Jesus, i was about to suggest a video explaining exactly this! Thank you very much! Im recently graduated on my AFF but i still keep studying using your videos!
Hi Catherine Like your videos a lot! I am only a bloody rookie, starting AFF in April, but I like watching your videos and already try to learn as much as possible! Merci beaucoup!
I used my Sky hook MARD when I was first brave enough to start packing my own canopy. I packed a half step through and the canopy came out like a lollywrapper, then collapsed and turned into a streamer (like a loose shopping bag). Initiating emergency procedures; the reserve was out in a flash, a magical canopy transfer! It was a good learning experience, thankfully, I don't pack stepthroughs anymore.
I jumped for eleven years with an RSL on other systems (Javelin and Infinity). Had one cutaway with the RSL and hit line stretch under the reserve as I was removing the reserve ripcord from its pocket. I love the concept of the MARD, but am also aware that they have sometimes been packed incorrectly by a rigger. If hooked up "backwards" a MARD can lock down the reserve pilot chute in a total mal situation preventing reserve deployment. This is very rare, but has been found on some rigs at the next reserve repack. Human nature being what it is, this mistake will continue to happen - though rarely. What I like about the RSL is that the jumper can inspect the whole thing from one end to the other and be assured it's routed correctly. The time saved by a MARD over an RSL shouldn't matter if you're opening and cutting away at safe altitudes (minimums of 2500/1800 ft).
Another great video. I did level one AFF years ago but sadly wasn't able to carry it on for various reasons. I'm going to give it another go soon and these video's are inspiring me to get back to the sport as soon as possible. Great content clearly explained. Love it, Keep it coming!
Great video and very important as well! Everybody should be aware so they can decide for themselves. I can understand everybody who jumps a RSL, Skyhook or MARD. For me personally I'm jumping without it. "Keep it simple" is what I prefer. I want to be in charge of the behavior of my system, especially in emergency situations. It is great to have improvements, that's part of our sport. But we are not in BASE environment. We all know that there have to be combinations of events to get into a situation thaaaaat low, that this system will safe our lifes. In all other events the normal emergency procedure is fine as well. Of course, if you get there once, you have no second chance. But on the other hand I heard of issues for these kind of systems like RSL, Skyhook or MARD as well. It can be rigging / installation issues, user errors or whatever errors. I'm not saying these systems do not work or they are bad but every additional piece of Equipment is also a danger to do mistakes. This should be said as well. Someone told me about statistics that these systems are more reliable than causing issues for whatever reason. For me personally it's also a point of confidence in the sky and I dont want to have in mind that something could cause an issue. I want to rely on my behavior in the sky. If I fuck up, it's my fault... probably not very common point of view these days but I think its important to talk about both sides!
Love the video. Keep it up. I'm a student jumper with 23 jumps and about to get license so will be shopping for a rig in the near future. it's nice to get someone to demonstrate and explain these systems in laymens terms!
@@lobbyrobby I moved out of California so I haven't jumped recently. I had to get settled in at my new place. I'll be getting current again soon at a new Drop Zone but before I left I was on a 190 standing up all my landings. Had two canopy courses, initial to get my B and then one with Alter Ego which was awesome. I was about ready to go to a 170. I had lost some weight as well so the wingloading wouldn't have been much different. I got laid off after 16 years and decided to move out of California but before I did I did 40 jumps in 2 months and ended at 110. I'll get back to it. I'm in a much better financial spot now :D
Love your content, I am not a skydiver but the technology behind it is fascinating. All of your videos break it down very well making it easy to understand. I will skydive one day, in the meantime, I can learn all about the gear I might be using. Keep it up!
Thanks for yet another enjoyable and informative upload Catherine. It helps new comers like myself to be able to sit and watch these over to get the information to stick. Personally I would love to see a video on the types of situations where it would be beneficial or necessary to disconnect your MARD or RSL system, I watch all your uploads but I would really like to see one like that.....Blue Skies 🤙🏻😎
I had my first cutaway a couple of weekends ago at jump 117....I have a MARD system (Skyhook) on my rig and the opening was fast, fast, fast and im glad I have it...i understand it generally and your explanation was great, but I dont understand how it would work if you had a horseshoe malfunction. Ive been trying to figure it out and would appreciate your help....thanks....
MARD concept came from the BASE jump enviroment, Mark Hewitt design it after a building strike and Marta Empinotti with her Sorcerer main and reserve container (Vertigi BASE Outfitters) put it on a serial production way before the skydiving and the skyhhok appear, Just to mention jaja
Thanks for the video! Very good explanation!! Do you already have one, where you explain in what kind of scenarios a deactivation of the RSL would be necessary? Eg: water landing
The main is attached to the reserve deployment bag which is not attached to the reserve canopy. So once the reserve is out the main go away with the reserve d-bag.
Very well explained. Any innovation regarding safety is always well received and all solutions are still valid and reliable. Perhaps the strength of UPT's skyhook system is the presence of the collin's lanyard which in the case of a partial cutaway of the single riser to which the RSL is connected, allows the release of the other riser before activating the reserve, effectively preventing a possible main reserve entanglement. I don't know at the moment if other M.A.R.D system provides this function. On june 2019 in Italy (Reggio Emilia D.Z.) a partial cutaway on a M.A.R.D equipped gear fortunately ended well with only minor injuries . A collin's lanyard would have prevented this malfunction . Here the link to the video of that jump th-cam.com/video/q7q7JtR4wLs/w-d-xo.html
The device that can deploy your reserve automatically is the AAD which I did talk about in another video. ;) Steve did explain well that the MARD is a system that works after the activation of the reserve deployment how ever that might be.
Hey katherine! .. I have a quick question.. I dont use any social media (face book, Instagram ect) or i would have maybe asked you on there.. love the videos btw .. I have just got my B.P.A. A licence and working towards getting my FS1, I've been saving every last penny I can get my hands on to perhaps by my own rig, and although base jumping is something I am interested in but is a little down the road yet I am torn between buying a sky diving rig with aad ect and a base rig , as when I have enough for a skydiving rig will be about the amount of time and jumps reccomended for a base jumping course...so I know I can hire a rig at the dropzone.. but not necessarily hire a base rig. Should I invest in a base rig and keep hiring dropzone kit or go ahead and get myself a custom skydiving rig. ? Thanks mate 🤙blue skies🤘
At your level, I highly recommend focusing on a skydiving rig. There is a long way for base jumping my friend. It is a great goal to have but do not rush it. Enjoy being a skydiver, learn about your equipement, get better, get experience and you'll know when you'll be ready for base jumping. That base jumping rig is not a priority for you at the moment.
@@SkydiveVibes last question.. I am thinking of doing my fs1 at either Madrid which is 30 mins tunnel time, plus 2 , 2 way is jump a 3 way and a 4 way. Or at another which is 10 actual jumps. Would you use the tunnel and finish with the 4 qualifying jumps... or do the actual skydives as to get freefall time toward my b license? Thanks
Thanks a lot for all your work :) could you please maybe make a video about how to clean the Container? i was thinking to put the rig in the wash machine to clean it :D :D :D Thanks again for your videos

You might want to talk to your instructors and let them explain to you what canopy transfer in our sport means.

Yes, more time to react is always safer, so making sure your opening altitudes and cutting ones are respected is smart!

Nice demonstration there.
I've heard that RSL potentially could open reserve, before fully cutaway main, so it could cause entanglement of the reserve and main canopy.
An improved version of the Stevens Cutaway System I used almost 50 years ago.
What are the disadvantages of this? I can think of one. But I'm interested in your thoughts on this. Thanks
