  • Line twists are a very common opening problem that is most often banal. Nevertheless, knowing how they happen and how to fix them is important to become a safer skydiver.
    Also note that even though they are often banal canopy malfunctions, they can still end up in a cutaway.
    So in this video, I'll cover how they happen, how to fix them and how to avoid them.

      Airborne training. Round parachute. Reach up. Grab risers. Pull apart risers by grabbing each riser under the line twist and pull apart (from center of neck pulling apart risers towards your shoulders while bicycle kicking. You will unfurl! It’s even more fun at 500 feet with no reserve when it happens. Especially in wind gust over 30 knots. That was my first line twist and it was followed up by me bouncing down the DZ like a damn ping-pong ball. You can’t release a round parachute when it’s under a load, so you get to get dragged down the landing zone until the parachute deflates enough that you can pull your release connections. O yes the good ole days, when we used to justify stupidity as esprit de corps! 😂

      Hi I was a welded skydiver girl, type of jump: static line, during my training I was taught a method that consists of "cycling in the air" while keeping the lines separated is very easy, in my third jump my parachute was twisted using the method and it worked, but I have noticed that free jumpers do not do it, do not you know? does not work for them? It's very easy but I don't see them using it, why?

    I had a line twist during my AFF level 1. I did everything I learning at groundschool. Alti-check and kicked it out. Before my first jump, I thought I would totally freak out when this happens, but I was calm and knew immediately what to do (maybe because of the adrenaline). Later on, when I was home I then freaked out XD. But I am still skydiving :D.
    By the way, I could improve my landing skills thx to this youtube channel. Thank you !!!!

      I had line twist on both first and second AFF levels. Also surprisingly I was really calm both times, kept checking the altimeter, and kicked out. And I was mentally prepared for cutout if I couldn't get out at a lower altitude. Hopefully no more line twists for the rest of my AFF jumps!

    I just had this happen Friday. I'm an AFF student and it was my 6th jump. I instantly remembered my emergency procedures. I was able to pull on my risers and kick out pretty quickly. I was surprised how calm and collected I was.

    • @SkydiveVibes
      @SkydiveVibes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Good job. Remember that this is a common problem that we see at deployment. We can work to avoid them through our body position and packing but if it happens, react calmly just like you did. ;) They are rarely a big deal, unless you are spinning.

      @tysonpotter3205 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Lol, I was getting ready for the spin. I put my eyes on my cutaway pillow as I started pulling/kicking. It wasnt a big deal, but glad I was ready. I felt like a boss afterwards. :)

So thankful for good training and keeping your cool under pressure. I learn from every one of them ,....I hope to make a lot more

    I'm on my AFF 7 and I already had 3 line twists :( I need to be more stable on deployments. Hadn't had much trouble with them, twice I kicked out of them, the other one I counter twisted them, where twist moved to risers which rotated me back to normal... I learned all that in this video! Thanks.

    Another way line twist have an easier opportunity to engage is by tightening your chest strap too tight. This brings the risers closer together and so the lines don't have a far gap between them. I would point out the pulling the risers apart is great to stop the lines from twisting more but it is easier to kick out if the risers are then pushed together. Pulling apart makes the lines tighter in the twist. I'm a big fan of twisting the risers to bring the twist down as you stated. Definitely the most productive method

    An AAD fire is not a given on spinning line twists because you need to be falling faster than the activation speed. The canopy might be out and you are spinning fast but not that fast. Like I had spinning line twists while wingsuiting, passed out and the AAD didn't fire. I woke up on the ambulance ride and later my alti showed I impacted at ~25mph which is way below AAD firing speed.
    I don't agree with everything but its nice for newer jumpers especially given the push by USPA to "Don't Delay, Cut Away"

    • @SkydiveVibes
      @SkydiveVibes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Kristina, great input and I totally agree with you. I did say that your AAD may fire "depending" on your speed. What were your injuries after that event?

    I got a severe line twist and spindle canopy (just like in your video at 2:00) due to a TENSION KNOT that I haven´t noticed on one steering line when I packed my Rig, that´s why it´s so important to check periodically untwisting steering lines from the canopy to the container, fortunately, I opened at 4000 feet so I had enough time for spindle my body til get untwisted my canopy and fix the problem, definitely was a scary experience.

    What about to twist the dbag before to put it on the pack tray? This is a very comon way to have a twist line malfunction on deployment. In the other hand if you dont know if your line stows are too loose or too tight, take a fish scale and measure the pull force on first locking stow, this has to be in the range of 8-12 lbs, the best way is doble stow all of them if the first two locking stows are to tight then single stow the 2-4 first ones and doble stow the rest, remember always use large rubber bands, not tandem rubber bands be aware of this just comon large rubber bands and always remember to make every bite with the same size usually 3 fingers width and in the same place one respect the other, if not the dbag will dance in the air. Also Its a good idea to use a F111 pilot chute since this material make a most controlled deployment.

    During static line jumping, can the lines get twisted as well or is this more of an event during free fall jumping?

    • @bilbo000
      @bilbo000 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      60% of static line jumps have at least 1 twist (crazy high stat, I know!) But most of them will just straighten themselves out. If you're reallyy twisted, then the bicycle kick+riser spread works just fine. Make sure you get a good exit to avoid more twists in the first place!

    You don't have another reserve canopy.

    • @SkydiveVibes
      @SkydiveVibes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you have a low speed malfunction and you have enough altitude you can always try to fix the situation but if the canopy is uncontrollable you will have to cutaway at some point. Also think that the reserve deployment system and pack job is different and has better chance to open without issues. BUT... Never stop fighting for your life!
