There’s always other people to watch
Interviews of navy seals, ex-cia spies or SF operators promoting their book or master class gets exhausting. Blue collar guys like this, doing the daily grind to eek out a living are just as inspirational.
These types deserve and need more props for what they do. It’s why nobody wants to work regular necessary jobs anymore. The general public only sees pro athletes, actors, and stand up comics receiving accolades now days. We can all survive without those people. We can’t survive without trash men, janitors, nurses, plumbers, carpenters, electricians, hvac repair etc

My grandpa rode on the back of a trash truck for decades and loved to pick stuff. He had all kinds of little nicknacks, most of which he probably found in the trash, displayed around his house. As a little kid, every time we’d stop to see him, he’d show us new treasures he found and occasionally give me something cool. When I was probably 10, I was traveling with my uncle and we stopped at my grandpa’s house. My grandpa brought out a lock box, like an old cash box, that he’d found and said there’s something inside, and we heard something heavy shuffling around and knocking against the sides when he moved it, but the box was locked without a key. So, he handed it to my uncle to see if he could get it open. My uncle looked it over to come up with a plan to open it and I said that I could pick the lock open with a paper clip. My uncle, probably not realizing I was being serious and assuming he’d have to destroy the box to get it open anyway, handed it to me thinking it would keep me occupied for a while. Then my grandpa found me a paper clip and a little flathead screwdriver and I sat on the floor picking at the lock while they talked. It took me maybe five-ten minutes before I managed to pop the lock and locked inside was a loose old .22 revolver. No holster, no padding in the box, just a metal revolver in a metal box. I grew up with guns, so I knew not to put my finger on the trigger and to keep it pointed down/away, but when I pulled it out of the box, my uncle’s eyes got so wide and he snatched it from me so fast…

We waste A LOT in this country. I met a mover once who told me he had a warehouse filled with furniture, electronics, etc. from people who decided they just didn't want it anymore or didn't have the space for it so the movers took everything and resold it.

I had a job in 2009 during the mortgage crisis driving a roll off truck. This is when they were giving people cash for keys to leave their homes. The stuff I would take out of the dumpsters and bring home was amazing because the houses were just being thrown into the dumpsters. My wife would complain until she started seeing the money come in from the things I sold on Craigslist. One of the most enjoyable jobs I have ever had.
This man isn’t lying, I’ve work as a mechanic since 1990 on garbage trucks and have many stories. It really is amazing what some people throw away and what garbage men find out on their routes . One time a driver found an old area rug rolled up an thrown in the back of a roll-off box, he pulled it out and when he unrolled it out came the customer’s dead wife that he rolled up in the rug and threw into the debris box . What is really funny is most companies have rules about scavenging , yet you couldn’t stop these men from doing it , even the threat of termination doesn’t stop them.

I’ve sold garbage truck going on 21 years. It’s a Great Recession proof industry. One of my early demos in Minnesota in a really nice neighborhood we picked up homes of some of the American Indians who received royalty checks or whatever you call it from an Indian owned casino. One of these people would leave a nice upright vacuum by the curb about every 4 months. After dumping the first two in the trash over the last year the driver thought why does this guy go through so many new vacuums? After the third newer vacuum was set out one was set out he ended up
Just putting it in the cab (an automated truck) . When he got home he found the only reason the owner threw it away was the bag was full and he was too lazy to change it. Things you do when you get checks and never have to work for your money (casino welfare money) Have lots of other stories but this one is one of my favorites.

Being on the back of a trash truck for almost 10 years was one of the best experiences of my life. I worked for a local city government and the city was pretty small, so we only ran 5 trucks. The job isn't for everyone, you run into some real a-holes, and you see a lot of things that you don't forget. Running a truck through some of the nicer neighborhoods though you could find some really great stuff.
i appreciate theo bringing on people who do the world’s hardest jobs. very respectable and says a lot about him for someone in his position tbh
My dad was a trash man in Orange County ca. You wouldn’t believe some of the stuff these people threw away. My dad found an original gameboy with around 20 games. A Super Nintendo with about 30 games. Bikes, lounge chairs. It just goes to show you that the old saying is true.

My first scooter was a 1986 Honda elite 80 that I found on neighbors curb. Took it home and got it running. Ive been obsessed with old honda bikes ever since. Ive had a dozen or so and love doing wheelies on them 😅

My family runs a trash company and im always finding and pulling stuff out of the dumpsters. Alot of the drug stores like Walgreens and CVS throw away tons of seasonal stuff instead of paying to store it. I had a family of racoons coming by my house every night so I started bringing home donuts from a Dunkin that we dump, sure they might be pre-diabetic now but they will survive the winter with all that donut fat they've acquired
I worked for a trash company on a trash truck second day on the job found an empty pill bottle, laying in a shoebox with a vintage gold and pearl ring! I was hooked from that point on.
Cousin of mine worked for a trash company when I was a kid and he showed up at our house one day after work with a 2 huge box’s full of old hot wheels that hadn’t been opened!

My uncle ran a demolition service, and he could keep whatever they found in the homes. Lots of times it was people destroying a property with poor living habits, sometimes hoarders, sometimes it was just time for the building to go. He has gotten some really cool and valuable stuff from it. One old home had 1000 and 500 dollar bills in stacks hidden in the walls.

I was a garbage man for years. People throw out all kinds of things that are useful. I swear everything I needed...I ended up finding. I even found a QP of weed one time! Back then, all the sodas would have contests and you could spin and win a free soda...I checked all the bottles and always found free soda winning caps, winning scratch off lotto tickets. I would dig out all the vcr's and take them home...most of the time, they just needed a good cleaning...I sold a bunch of vcr's I dug out. One of my customers was George Foreman...the boxer...Best customer ever! Nicest family ever! My favorite job I have had in life was picking up trash.
One time driving down the street i seen a guy throwing away over 50 BRAND NEW IN BOX VHS recording tapes, and i saw the guy working and clearing out more garbage, and asked if it was alright to grab the tapes? He said go ahead! And i grabbed em, and listed and sold on ebay for 250$ overnight, lol. One time in 2012 bought a .50 cent brochure to Disneyland the first year it opened, came with 8 postcards, i sold for 10$ each, and the brochure sold for 425$, that .50 cents turned into $505 really quick.

My best find was on bulk metal day. A lady was coming to the curb with a 4.5hp outboard motor in a wheelbarrow. I asked if the motor ran and she just started to rant about her exhusband. I took it home and sold it for $200 during a yard sale.
My grandpa was a garbage man for over 50 years he never did residential he did industrial and I remember him coming home with so much stuff when I was a kid I mean hundreds of pairs of brand new Nikes test sample shoes before they would be released, tools, genuine luxury bags, clothes ect we would go to the fle market every Saturday and he used to be rolling in it lmao
I love that there's some millionaire garbage man out there because he decided to save some things from going into the landfill. It's a win-win-win story.
this is a great idea of podcast. interview people that are the "average human" but with unique jobs and shit. not every pod needs to be comics and influencers

I love Theo's interview style. He actively listens to his guests and engages with THEIR story, unlike a Joe Rogan who wants to talk over everyone all the time.
i cant stand the way he deals with his guests, he is a scatterbrain and he interrupts constantly with his stories... he does make me laugh with some of his comments.
i work in recycling. There was a brand new, tags still on it, propane barbecue at the curb to be tossed. Figured it was a mistake, wheeled it into the back yard. Next week, it was back at the curb, sign on it to toss it out. The owner found one he liked better and bought it, and was in a tax bracket where it was not worth his time to return the other for a refund.
The trick to finding good stuff is to go to affluent areas because items that are still good will be discarded when people upgrade to better stuff like larger flat screen tv’s.
I worked at a waste & recycling plant. I was a heavy machinery operator running a link belt or gigantic excavator picking up trash and shingles from roofing as well to grind into profit for road work ect. I used to have to sift through recycling as well separating plastics and would find jewelry and my favorite was musical equipment. A Marshall half stack was my best find lol. Needed the input Jack re soldered and it was mint.
Garbage men and mail carriers are great collectors. They find the goods without even having look

In the Netherlands, it's different. Coworker got fired for taking some recycling water bottles. Because it's then owned by the garbage company. And its then stealing.
I found an electric fireplace on the curb. An electric heater with lighted “flanes”. And a great rug. And a black rocking chair from about 1960. And another rocking chair that looks turn of the century, it has odd looking very strong all-steel (rusted) nails. I love my curb finds!!

I clean parking lots for a living. I find all kinds of stuff in dumpsters, or just laying on lots. Ive found jewelry, electronics, collectables, air conditioners, all kinds of stuff. I also resell some of it as a side hustle. Its honestly a great gig. Have around 300 grams of gold and over 2 pounds of silver, all found on parking oots and sidewalks

While I do firmly believe in road gold, there is another side of this coin. When I was a teenager working for my family’s small business, I’d do the weekly dump runs with the delivery van. As soon as I’d open the doors, I’d get people jumping in the back of my van, tearing open garbage bags. Business was upholstery, 99% of our trash was fabric scraps and cardboard. Fuckin sucked having to sweep it off the floor of the shop, and then again out of my van.

I remember when we were young we had a Budlight party ball. It’s a 5.5 gallon ball of budlight thwy comes with a tap. It’s like a mini keg. Anyway we cut it open (it was plastic) to finish the warm beer the next morning and I ended up 🤮 in it. I then threw it out with the trash. While shooting hoop the garbage came and we hear their guy saying “I’m gonna keep this. These things are worth $ if you take them back” 😂😂😂😂😂😂 wonder how far he got before they also puked 🤮 lol
I used to go to my town's transfer station back in my early teens. I'd take the decent computers, mix and match parts, and sell them. Started picking from the metal bin too... someone threw out a brand new, never been run small engine. Easy $200. Made enough money to not need a shitty first job. Those were the days. As shitty as throw out culture is, it does make opportunities for some folks.

I worked for county waste management as a bulk trash man. Let me tell you. The amount of shit that gets thrown away that is useful or damn near good as new is insane. Im talking about enough computers to start a 2nd hand business big . Lol

This was over ten years ago, my garbage guy, who owned his collection business, used to cut the power cords off of appliances and hang them on the truck. he claimed that when he cashed them in at the scrap yard he got a dollar apiece for them..
LOL My bi-weekly route through the "Better part "of town, is a regular thing. Most folks have no idea how valuable trash can be. I have been a dumpster diver for decades. Mainly to recycle the metals I can find. Between the Copper aluminum, brass, and stainless steel you can find some unusual stuff. Over the years, I have found a variety of collectables. Most of it is displayed throughout my house and the rest is awaiting the yearly Yard sale. I once found an Underwood Typewriter that was one of the first off the line. I tuned it up and looked around for pricing.. Within hours of a face book post, it was sitting in a private collection and I bought a used car with the proceeds from the sale.. I once found gold chain with a 1 oz Doubloon charm in a couch, I just wanted the back leather for my bike seat so, that was probably the most unusual find although not the most valuable by any means.

As an ex-garbage man myself, I knew many guys who did stuff like this, after they retired they had plenty of stuff, and money to keep making money for a long time.
When I lived in Palm Beach FL even the Middle class would drive around to the rich neighborhoods the day after Christmas. It would be a gold mine out there lol.

Yeah… When I was a trash man, we used to have a garage sale every year with all stuff from the trash. You could make a good $400 at least. You would be surprised the stuff people throw away. Some things brand new, even unopened; expensive things even.
When I go to the Landfill. The workers all collect everything. The head manager looks and he doesn’t want it the employees will sort through them. They don’t allow the public to take anything

Once anything is put out for collection, in NYC, it belongs to the Government, so you can loose your vehicle and liberty by picking through the trash. How ever people throw out good stuff all the time, like art work worth $100,000's. But if a sanitation worker gets caught just taking or selling things they loose their job! Sanitation Workers get injured some get killed on the job. The pay may sound great, but if you are a family man, paying a mortgage, putting kids through school to college, it not a liveable wage.
